Jan Vesely will be introduced as a Wizard today at 10 a.m.  I'm not sure if it's streaming anywhere, but I'll be there asking questions and such.  If anyone finds it, let me know.

I dunno, but when you schedule something for 10am…. I’d hope the stream would be ready at 10am… It’s 10:03 and I’m getting the error “The Selected item is not currently available”

Maybe I’m just picky like that – but I don’t want to miss anything…

I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.

Working now

Maybe I just needed to watch 27 Washington Nationals commercials first……

and he's right, in a way...

He said that as far as aggressiveness and competitiveness, he reminded him of KG…..

And I agree- as far as the intangibles go – aggressiveness, toughness, competitiveness, motor, energy, work ethic, Basketball IQ, intensity, passion, and even athletically – he compares very well to KG…

Skill wise (shooting, dribbling, rebounding) – not so much.

But you have to think that with those intangibles – he has a much better chance of improving and becoming a very, very good player – than say a guy that loafs getting back on defense, can’t learn the plays, and is passive and disinterested….

I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.

Dubbed “Da Kid” as a rookie, Garnett was raw. His low-post game needed improvement and he needed to work on his shooting. Most importantly at 6’11" he only weighed 220 pounds, leaving him severely undersized to compete against the larger forwards in the league.

http://espn.go.com/nba/player/bio/_/id/261/kevin-garnett

Vesely’s scouting report isn’t miles away from that assessment. You just cross your fingers and hope you get something approaching this:

With Laettner gone Garnett was assured a starting spot at forward, and he started the final 42 games. As a starter he put up totals of 14.0 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 2.26 BPG while shooting 53.3% from the field. Garnett was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and ranked 15th in the NBA in blocks per game with 1.6.

KG was dubbed

“the kid who changed the game” as a rookie. He was a better prospect than Vesely by far. I’ll withhold judgment for now, but I hate comparisons like this.

by Jim America on Jun 27, 2011 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

"the kid who changed the game"

That was probably because he was the first HS player to be drafted in 20 years and the youngest player ever to play in the NBA (at the time). Doubt it was due to his play that year.

He averaged about 10 and 6 and was 2nd team all-rookie. The team went 26-56. Understandable, respectable, but not game changing that year.

by MR on Jun 27, 2011 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Just saying

there are few, if any, scouts that would say these two were basically equivalent prospects. This is a rose-colored glasses comparison.

by Jim America on Jun 27, 2011 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

To be fair, Flip wasn't comparing their whole games

Full quote: “When Milt Newton went and saw him two years ago, he told me, ’You’re going to love him.’ He reminds me a lot of Garnett, from the standpoint of his energy and his motor.”

Also said he could see Jan at the top of his zone like Garnett. Definitely not saying he’ll be a Hall of Famer necessarily.

by Mike Prada on Jun 27, 2011 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I know...not mad at Coach

I love KG type motors on the squad. Just trying to temper the expectations of some desperate Bullets fans that hear nothing more than the 2 in the same sentence. Vesely needs to severely improve his skillset before any such comparison is warranted in my view.

by Jim America on Jun 27, 2011 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear ya

I don’t think anyone is looking at this guy and projecting him to be the next KG, though.

by MR on Jun 27, 2011 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably true

although I got in a back and forth on this site recently with someone comparing Blatche and KG. I am apparently a staunch defender of KG…and sanity.

by Jim America on Jun 27, 2011 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

All I really see in common is that they are skinny, lanky, high energy guys that are coached by Flip their first year.

But it gives some perspective about what a successful JV could look like down the road. If he is successful.

Obviously your mileage may vary.

by MR on Jun 27, 2011 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Well that accolade came after he earned it.

Lawrence Taylor changed the game too. That just means he was the first of his kind. The NFL adjusted to his type of linebacker the same way the NBA adjusted to the KG type.

I get your concern, but really, it’s mostly talk. Why not aim high?

by jones-y on Jun 27, 2011 1:04 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Why not aim high?

because if he doesn’t pan out, I have to listen to half of you talking about how he’s going to be the next KG next year (for 7 years or so). Unrealistic expectations can also severely hamper a players development.

by Jim America on Jun 27, 2011 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

to be fair though, I thought that was an unearned nickname at the time. Hype is hype. It rarely comes to fruition.

No.

When you said ’can’t learn the plays,’ that threw me a little ;-)

by jones-y on Jun 27, 2011 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

So combining Vesely (aggressiveness) and Blatche (skillset) equals KG?

TNT should've treated Lebron's return to Cleveland game like 2k11 and cut the game off after the Cavs were down by 30. lol

by Krobify on Jun 27, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Ha! that's a bargain!

Blatche + Vesely= $10 million. KG in his prime for is a max contract, so Ernie just saved Ted a lot of money ;-)

jeebus 10am?

I wanted to start an unofficial questions thread…

Given Ernie and company felt Singleton and Mack would go before our picks, who were their contingencies?

Beyond JW (we’ve heard all about him) how do these players fit with last year’s crop?

by Jheiser3 on Jun 27, 2011 10:18 AM EDT reply actions

This is awesome

From Grantland (ideas for Vesely’s dunk contest):

“2. THE SKODA DUNK: According to Wikipedia, Skoda is a car manufacturer based in the Czech Republic. They specialize in fuel-efficient cars for young people. Their coolest looking car is something called the Praktik.

Here is the description of the car on Skoda’s website:
This two-seater utility vehicle offers you comfort and easy manoeuvrability (sp) as well as the look of a passenger car. At the same time it is big enough for the needs of tradesmen with small or medium-sized businesses.

Anyway, this is what happens…. Vesely’s girlfriend drives the fuel-efficient hybrid Skoda Praktik onto the court. Just for the contest, Skoda has created a convertible version. Vesely dunks over the Praktik, hangs on the rim, dismounts, slaps the backboard with both hands, lands in the driver’s seat and peels the fuck out. Then, as Blake Griffin watches, he pulls donuts around the court and when he finally drives down the tunnel, the words, "YOUR MOVE, AMERICAN JAN VESELY" have been written out in burned rubber."

by Wieters Wieners on Jun 27, 2011 10:22 AM EDT reply actions   2 recs

Yeah

He doesn’t need to drive off. Dismount into the car, kiss the girlfriend, and then the choir in the background sings “your move, American Jan Vesley.” Boom. Done.

…Meanwhile, Javale will dunk four balls into two 12-foot hoops, and still come in third.

by sierradave on Jun 27, 2011 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Another awkward question about the kiss...

Flip with good insight. Hopes Jan’s relentless aggression attacking the basket will be contagious.

Jan's gotta be thinking

“Why are Americans so shocked that they make SUCH a big deal out of a guy kissing his girlfriend?”

Yeah Europe is much less prudish than America.

We’re also much more violent than them. Perhaps there’s a connection? lol

Or, Jan's gotta be thinking

“Why are Americans so impressed that a basketball player has a high motor, hustles, and plays hard every night?”

Honestly

I was wondering myself too. It’s a simple kiss, he’s got his girlfriend there and this is probably the biggest moment of his life. why shouldn’t he kiss her?

toughness is what i know i wanted from our picks

desire, want, chip on your shoulder, tenacity, etc, etc. when its so hard to come by on a team you really start appreciating when guys have these characteristics.

Yep.

I can get behind a mentally tough, scrappy team. I hope they’re a reflection of Wall’s intensity and focus.

by jones-y on Jun 27, 2011 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Like I said in my Draft Prospect Profile....

I think he has great hands…. I don’t know where this whole “weak hands” thing came from unless it was from David Locke’s evaluation.

If you notice in Locke’s video, every clip is from the same game…. in the same half of play… The Partizan vs Effes Pilsen game… one of the few full EuroLeague games left on Youtube that has not been pulled due to copyright infringement…

I watched that SAME game… It’s a game where Vesely had one of his worst outings of the year, scoring 9 points but had a couple turn overs (BOTH of which were shown in that video) and 4 fouls…

In the 15 games or so that I’ve watched so far last week and this week – I see a guy with very good hands…. as I stated in my Draft Prospect Profile in March.

I’ll have a more detailed scouting report on him later – but his hands are a non-issue.

I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.

by Rook6980 on Jun 27, 2011 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

thanks...I hope you are right

I think that was what I saw, but I also saw some issues with holding onto the ball in the NBA Playbook write up. Not sure if that was the same game. Also, he has stated he needs to improve his ball handling. It sounds like you think that isn’t a hand related issue more than a consistency and fundamentals issue.

You watched 15 Partizan games over the weekend??

Kudos to you for your dedication. I watched some of the games posted yesterday and got bored.

Right

I’m excited to just see that we are getting players that will compete every night and not back down. Hopefully it will rub off on the team as a whole. And as David Aldridge said, “If Blatche isn’t on board, he can get out of town.” LOL

It feels great to have a GOOD owner

I think many of us are probably also fans of the O’s and Skins too, and it just feels good (and a bit alien) to be excited about the management and direction of the team (I don’t really follow hockey, so I can’t comment on that)

Seriously, Angelos is terrible.

And Daniel Snyder is……..I’ll just stop there

by HIBACHI GOLD on Jun 27, 2011 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

s, Angelos was a penny pincher

and threw away a team in the late 90’s that had a real shot to go all the way.

As for Snyder, he doesn’t have to worry about losing money because of the TV money, and he won’t worry about really making steps to improve the Skins until there are blackouts. He’s gotten us a lot closer to that point, but there’s still a long way to go before the Redskins truly fall out of favor in DC.

by thewiz06 on Jun 27, 2011 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

By defense, do you mean by a team that is among the league leaders is opposition FG%age, or among the fewest points per game?

I would like to see us average at least 106 ppg on offense, so on defense I’d like to see us give up less than 100. Hopefully a FG% differential of 3% in our favor. That would make us one of the top teams in the league.

by thewiz06 on Jun 27, 2011 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Completely agree

we still need a spot up shooter in addition to Young, but the defensive tenacity, mentality, and toughness acquired over the last 2 years is encouraging. I just hope Flip can teach team defense better than I’ve seen in the past.

I also liked Flip's comments about playing time...

He views Vesely as a “rotation player” right away….

Does Flip see him playing the 3 or 4?

He said position doesn't matter....

blurring the “lines” so to speak between 4 and 5…. He did say they would probably at some point show a front line of Vesely, Blatche and McGee….

I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.

by Rook6980 on Jun 27, 2011 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

That could Indicate that we'll be playing a lot more zone next year.

In Flip’s zone, the 4 and 5 are interchangeable. Each is responsible for the low block on one side of the rim. The 3 is positioned near the FT line and helps out both inside and out. Vesely has the ideal physical profile for the role. The guards fly around the perimeter, one on each side of the floor, mostly to run guys off the 3 pt line, especially in the corners.

by yop32 on Jun 27, 2011 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Bingo!

I think Vesely could crack the starting lineup a lot sooner than some people are expecting. And be pretty darn good.

by yop32 on Jun 27, 2011 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

but Singleton fits this role too, and he’s proven himself to be an elite defender in college.

by Jim America on Jun 27, 2011 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Just Vesely

I think they introduce Singleton and Shelvin Mack tomorrow.

I think

our best bet with Vesely is for him to become a player like Trevor Ariza. Honestly, that might be a reach but with his athleticism and some time with NBA coaches it’s very possible.
