Did I hear wrong lat night?
Or did Valanciunas say he was similar to Chris Bosh because they were both weak in the upper body? I didn’t stop to rewind when I heard it but was laughing really hard.
You heard correctly.
Bosh can’t catch a break.

Loved to see that Sheldon Mack story
Glad to have him, a guy who wants to win first on the team. That’s the type of players you need.
Jan seems like he will fit into the personalities on this team well. Him McGee and Young should have fun together. Hey and we have our own Eva to sit in the stands now lol.
And Singleton sounds very determined. Him and Booker should get along fine, they will probably get the most out of each other.
So we got a mix of determined (Wall, Mack, Singleton, Booker), fun loving yet hardworking (Young, McGee, Vesely, H), and cold blooded (Crawford, Seraphin) players. Nice Mix.
Blatche is none of the above

I just hope Booker doesn't come into camp disliking Singleton because they have similar qualities
I hope they team up and change the culture of this team

Ted states, "He and Trevor Booker will team at times to be dynamos on the boards and playing tough shut down defense"
I think they can find minutes for both, and I love the idea of those two on the floor at the same time. They’re the kind of competitors who can feed off each other’s energy.

Random question:
If there is an amnesty clause in the next CBA, do we for sure use it on Rashard?

I imagine that many of us are tired after all the thinking, posting, analyzing and arguing we did in preparation/anticipation of the draft. I know I am.
Too bad none of us actually have a job or any responsibilities related to the draft!

Leonsis said a team wanted our 6th, 18th and 1st next year to move up. Do you guys think that was for Williams or Kanter? If it was for Kanter, I am glad we did not do it. If it was for Williams, not sure…..I might have pulled the trigger there.
Flacco's first 3 years vs. Brady's, Manning's and Brees' first 3 years
Flacco threw for just 21 fewer passing yards than Brady and tossed four fewer interceptions. Flacco threw for 1,655 more yards than Brees, two more touchdowns and four fewer picks. Manning, who averaged 88 more passes per season, threw for way more yards and touchdowns than Flacco, but also tossed 24 more interceptions.
Williams is all offense and nothing else
I absolutely do not understand why wiz fans, of all the people in the world, would want to draft no-defense, no-rebounding players to add to their struggles-with-defense, struggles-with-rebounding team. And not only that, they’re willing to bet the farm (give up multiple extremely valuable assets) to do it.
I wouldn’t have wanted him if he had fallen to us. Well that’s not entirely true. I’d take him if he had fallen, but I wouldn’t give up one single asset besides the draft pick used to select him.
In fact I think the NBA has its priorities screwed up. Offense sells tickets. Defense wins championships. In my mind (and I’ll concede that that’s probably the only place on earth), a guy like Singleton should be more highly valued than a guy like Williams. If for nothing more than the fact that scoring two points is intrinsically no more valuable than stopping your opponent from doing so…
I’d have done 6+18 for Kanter (because he’s a two-way player – offense AND defense). I’d still do it right now today. But adding next year’s #1 is exorbitant.

I am as happy with the draft as you are it seems. I really could not have asked for a better 3 players given where we drafted.
Your description could apply to Vesely as much as Williams
You write that it is foolish to “draft no-defense, no-rebounding players to add to their struggles-with-defense, struggles-with-rebounding team.” This would appear to apply more to Vesely than Williams. Williams was a tough defender and rebounder. Vesely may turn out to be a tough defender and rebounder too but he’s not shown that yet.
Perhaps you should watch some video of Vesely on defense before you make that comment...
He’s actually a pretty good perimeter defender… very poor in the post…
Mike’s second link above about Vesely’s strengths and weaknesses should give you a pretty good idea of his perimeter defensive abilities…
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
To add a bit
Would I rather have Vesely, Singleton, and next year’s 1st or Derrick Williams? Door #1, please.

There's more to defense than rebounding

Only if the 1st next year was top-20 protected
Otherwise that’s way beyond fair value. The smart money says we’re a lottery team next year, probably with plenty of ping pong balls. Derrick Williams isn’t better than Kanter+Singleton+a high pick in a stacked 2012 draft…
i wouldn't have given up next year's first
but i might have given up mcgee and those two picks. i think williams has a chance to be special. 6’7" doesn’t scare me off. barkley was 6’4" and he was a decent power forward. williams looks much more athletic than jamison, so those comparisons don’t mean much to me either. i’m thinking somewhere between barkley and carmelo anthony. we’ll see which of williams, mcgee, and vesely pans out…
by DarrellWalkerFan on Jun 25, 2011 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions
All I am hearing from every link above is how well we did in the draft last night
And how good of a pick Vesely is. How come 80% of the people here don’t feel the same? I see A and A+ grades all over the place, yet people here giving C’s?
Flacco's first 3 years vs. Brady's, Manning's and Brees' first 3 years
Flacco threw for just 21 fewer passing yards than Brady and tossed four fewer interceptions. Flacco threw for 1,655 more yards than Brees, two more touchdowns and four fewer picks. Manning, who averaged 88 more passes per season, threw for way more yards and touchdowns than Flacco, but also tossed 24 more interceptions.
Nature of the beast...
Vesely is a relative unknown. People are unique. And Derrick Williams and Enes Kanter were off the board.
The C’s are from the Biyombo lovers.
The C’s are from the Biyombo lovers.
A guy who would have gotten 2 blocks a game, but averaged 1.2 points a game. Vessely has a chance to be a similar block specialist as Biyombo with the ability to drop 20 points at any given time.
I think the disappointment here with Vesely
I don’t think many here would discount his offensive skills and toughness, recognizing that his offensive game has some serious holes (as is the case with most of the other lottery draft picks). But those of us who have spent time watching the Wizards know that one of the team’s core weaknesses over a long number of seasons has been rebounding and interior toughness. While all three of our draft picks appear to be tough, high motor players, they don’t add much to help our interior defense. And without a tough interior defense and rebounding domination, it’s hard to fully utilize the obvious strengths that Wall and Vesely bring to the team at the offensive end. Hopefully, Ernie will begin to correct that weakness in next year’s draft or through smart trades. I’d love to see us draft a Sullinger-type player who specializes in rebounding next year. Hopefully, Ernie sees the need too.
Well said....
However, the Wizards may not be able to address the “interior defense” or rebounding issue next year…
Sullinger is the only player projected to be in the Lottery that even comes close to being an upgrade on the front line… and the odds are that he won’t be available….
So, unless Blatche and McGee get a whole lot tougher, and better at rebounding, Ernie may have to plug that hole through Free Agency (How does Dwight Howard sound to plug that hole?)
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
Are you sure about next year?
I know nothing about them as players (except Sullinger and Perry Jones), but Chad Ford’s projected 2012 top 10 is littered with PF’s.
From what I can tell
he counts a lot of players such as Perry Jones or Terrence Jones as 4s, when they aren’t really interior guys, and are listed as 3s most places
Who do you like in next year's draft?
Supposing we pick in the 6-10 range
by Emmet O'Neal on Jun 26, 2011 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t really follow High School basketball, so it’s tough because a lot of the guys in next year’s Lottery are going to be one-and-done Freshmen. But from what I’ve read:
Michael Gilchrist – Yeah I know he’s a Small Forward, but if the Wizards are picking 6-10 next year, they have to take the Best Player Available in that tier… and that’s Gilchrist. A superb defender and an emerging offensive talent. High Basketball IQ and high energy level will follow the Wizards theme over the last two drafts….
James McAdoo may not get enough time at North Carolina (behind players like Tyler Zeller and John Henson) to make a case for being a Lottery pick… I can’t see him getting more than 15 minutes a night… but if he does get more minutes, he could be a real good player at the Power Forward spot.
Obviously Jared Sullinger would have to be my #1 target, but you said 6-10 , and he’ll be a top 3 pick…
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
Michael Gilchrist
Has a game almost similar to Chris Singleton, most of his points in high school came off of posting up.
TNT should've treated Lebron's return to Cleveland game like 2k11 and cut the game off after the Cavs were down by 30. lol
We also did draft two tough interior players last year
I’m counting on Booker playing the 4 — don’t see how he can make the transition to the wing, or why we’d want him to do so. With the way he came on near the end of the year, before his injury, I expect him to get a lot of playing time. Seraphin too, ideally, will be back in better shape and will be more comfortable and adjusted in America/playing in the NBA, enough so that he’ll make a greater contribution.
I’d also expect us to add a hardened veteran on a short term contract, just to add some toughness and wily vet experience to the frontcourt. Blatche is currently the alpha-dog and no one wants that

Really like what your team is doing right now, just wanted to come by and give some big ups. The Wizards are going to be real good and hopefully real soon. You guys had an almost impeccable draft, luck was definitely on your side getting Vesely, Singleton, and Mack. Those 3 were absolute steals, I can’t believe they were still available for your picks.
Also LOVE your new logos and uniforms. Classic and classy. I really wish the Wizards would do away with the actual wizard logo though (http://www.sportslogos.net/logo.php?id=b3619brnphtx65s2th4p9eggf)….it’s just too creepy, especially with those bad ass DC logos. Those should be the main logo(s).

You've still got Howard listed
He’s a FA and after this draft, I seriously doubt they’ll try to bring him back, though I really liked what he did in those brief healthy stints as a Wizard. Yeah, I’m still a big JHo fan, however I just can’t see any room for him anymore. And I’ve also grown to like Othyus Jeffers who plays the same position (for a player’s minimum) and doesn’t mind playing that high energy backup role as long as he’s part of the gang. So, seems like we’re pretty stacked at SF and don’t really need Josh around no more. Same goes for Mo Evans in a way.

After watching a lot more video on Jan Veseley, I'm very excited.
I’m still going into the season (if we have one) with very realistic expectations, but there are a few things I’ve noticed that I never saw before, and they’ve got my attention.
- A nice little fadeaway: These weeks leading up to the draft, I’ve known that Jan would ultimately score by cutting to the basket, rolling off of picks for lobs, getting oops and fast break dunks, offensive put-backs, etc. The one thing I’ve mentioned several times, that could help him tremendously on the offensive side of the ball, was a short range fadeaway jumper around the block and free throw line. This was something I thought he hadn’t developed yet, but SHOULD.
Now after being drafted, I’m seeing clips I hadn’t previously seen, and in a few of them it shows Jan getting great position down low by using his body surprisingly well, and fading away.
And it looks really nice. I’m not sure why, but the touch on his fall-away looks softer and smoother with better rotation than his set shot…..? Strange, but what I’m getting at is him having a nice little fade-away jumper at 6-11 has me far more excited than I initially was, and I was pretty excited to begin with.
- Defense
Since draft night ended, the clips and reels of Jan I’ve been focusing most on are his defensive reels, and they are FAR more impressive than I thought they would be. I know some here shared (and still share) concerns about his defensive ability, but after watching multiple clips, he looks like he could be a great, great defender in his career. From day one, he looks like he can be a very very solid, if not good defender right away. His footspeed is good for his size, and he uses his length brilliantly to cut off passing lanes and prevent his man from getting around him. He doesn’t bite on pump fakes and uses his wingspan to just put his arms straight up, almost always forcing a missed shot in those situations. He looks to be a much better shot blocker than I previously thought, and he works his butt off through screens.
He’s quick, long, and smart on the defensive end. My concerns for him there have changed to optimism and excitement. He’s no Singleton on defense, but he’s intriguing and looks like he could one day be great.
by DCeee on Jun 25, 2011 9:33 AM EDT reply actions 5 recs
And the biggest thing I have noticed about his defense...
is that he’s a really good PERIMETER defender… Like you said, he uses his quickness and spacing (playing slightly off his man) to prevent the drive, then quickly contests with his length when he forces a jumper.
The few times I did see him get beat, it was almost always by a guard, but he was sometimes able to recover and block the shot from behind anyway…
Partizan used Vesely as their point man on defense…. He played at the foul line, or on the wings… very rarely in the post…
When he did play post defense, he looked much more pedestrian – He used his body well to prevent the opponent from backing down, but opponents usually scored on him anyway…
So –
Perimeter defense = good
Interior defense = not so good
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
Which - in my mind - makes him a Small Forward

I'm not going to think of something extra witty or clever to say, I don't want to convince you to see things my way, I just have 2 words for you: JEREMY LAMB
And how many SF in this league are 6’11 with the potential to be 7’ or 7’1"?
Flacco's first 3 years vs. Brady's, Manning's and Brees' first 3 years
Flacco threw for just 21 fewer passing yards than Brady and tossed four fewer interceptions. Flacco threw for 1,655 more yards than Brees, two more touchdowns and four fewer picks. Definitely
And I should note, now that you mention it, that all of the clips I saw of Jan were of him guarding out on the perimeter.
I think he could be fantastic in Flip’s zone defense.
Trade Josh Smith for Blatche/Booker
Does anyone think this is a trade that might work?
Smith and Blatche are both headcases that drop similar numbers. Smith is a far better defender (although Blatche actually has better offensive skills) which is why I suggest throwing in Booker as well.
A frontline of Vesely/Singleton, Josh Smith, and Javale McGee is awfully intimidating defensively..
Why do we need another SF?
Smith is great, but he’s truly a small forward. We’ve got an army of small forwards (see Exile’s post above). We can out-small-forward any team in this league right now.
Josh Smith is FAR more productive as a PF.
TNT should've treated Lebron's return to Cleveland game like 2k11 and cut the game off after the Cavs were down by 30. lol
I would love to get Josh Smith.

Sorry but
Javale Mcgee is an idiot. His reaction to the team drafting a strong perimeter defender??? Good, that will help me get dunked on less.
Really Javale? Because its not about the actual defense of it, its about the posters. We pick a defender and you think good, now I will be on the wrong end of fewer posters? Grow up and realize you have a job to do. And the sooner you figure out that being a pro athlete should.be about winning, as much as anything, is the day I will become comfortable calling myself a fan of yours.

From nba street. I think he needs to learn or realize that posters don’t matter if he wants to be on a winning team.. dwyane got posterized , chris got dunked on and same with lebron, but they don’t put those things at the top of their list. Twitter can be confusing
because there is no established way to quote a tweet you are replying to.
Here is the tweet in question.
Javale is not quoting Chris Singleton here. He is basically saying, “I’m glad we have Chris Singleton, he will help our defense.” You can look at Chris Singleton’s own feed to see that he never said that he would prevent McGee would get dunked on. When Javale does quote or retweet somebody, he uses quotation marks. And more conclusively, NO ONE refers to Javale as “P” or “Pierre” except Javale.
For the record, I don’t have a problem with what Javale is saying. He’s getting excited about a new player from his own perspective. But let’s read tweets in context, indeed.
I am in no way letting this slide
No regret for inferring that I was an idiot for misreading a tweet, leading to wasted time and energy typing about it? I will reference some BF gold I read a while back:
Ok, so you just wasted a bunch of text complaining about an imaginary offense, and you have no regrets

So, given that McGee wrote this: what exactly is "idiotic" about him saying that Singleton will get blocks?
If you want to criticize players, there’s a whole historical smorgasbord of idiocy to choose from. There was Lapdance Tuesday with Dray. More famously, there was the case of Arenas defecating in Blatche’s shoe. But saying that Singleton will get blocks? Singleton instantly became the best defender on this team, and he hasn’t played a minute yet. Seems like a simple statement of fact.
Woah, woah, woah.
Slow down a second. Dray or Gil have nothing to do with how idiotic Javale’s mindset appears to be.
And more importantly, the post I replied to was you highlighting the fact that I misread a tweet, and I shouldn’t call people idiots and should look at myself as the idiot for reading the tweet wrong. You were saying I was an idiot for misreading it.
But in reality, you misread the tweet(and still are). I was only stooping slightly to your level, by highlighting that you were completely hypocritical in calling me out for not understanding the damn tweet. Because I understand its meaning. You don’t. Can you really defend this?
This is what happens when you call out, even indirectly, a bored member of an internet community, and the thing that you called them out for is exactly the thing that you are guilty of.
Ohhh my God.
Where is my FACE? I CANT FEEL MY FACE!!!

Again, I admit that I read it wrong. But I didn’t go extrapolating all sorts of silly s#it from it. Again, if you want to criticize the guy, you can pull up all kinds of examples. The man has changed his name to Pierre, for crying out loud – the jokes write themselves. But that twitter message was as good as true.
I already said
There is way more into my thinking he is an idiot and that I don’t like his mentality, than one tweet.
I don’t know if it makes sense to you that you made a dumb, unintelligent, unnecessary comment calling me an idiot.
If you agree that he is an idiot, and you did not understand the tweet, then why did you comment to begin with? I don’t see why you had to go and get me all riled up.
Quit “wasting text” with this stupidness. And next time you want to say something dumb and unnecessary, don’t say it to me.

I really hope the Wiz coaching staff spend some time on Jan's Free throws
The kid has good mechanics on his shot, and he gets to the line often. The concern about him not looking at the rim until the last second during free throws (from Mike’s link) seems easily correctable.
I feel like Jan will be a good shooter one day if his mechanics and confidence level are any indication.
I really just want to see him play already…hope there’s a season.
Mechanics
I’ve read a number of times how Vesely’s shooting form and mechanics are excellent and that all he needs is more experience and practice. When you’re shooting 45% from the free throw line, it’s doubtful that your form and mechanics are excellent. This is epic horrible Ben Wallace territory. I would say that he needs a LOT more experience and practice and probably a thorough reexamination of his form and mechanics. Particularly for a slashing/cutting guy who likes to take it to the basket and will presumably get a lot of FT opportunities, this is an area that should be his #1 priority. If he can’t correct this deficiency, his ultimate value to the team will be seriously diminished.
You have to watch video of his release
Preferably of shots that he actually took during games. The release doesn’t look bad. I think his failure to look at the rim is the primary cause of that horrible FT%. He may not be the next Reggie Miller, but this guy isn’t Shaq at the line, either.
true, Shaq was a 55%FT shooter at age 21
Unless the stats are lying, Jan misses most of his Js in games and has a correspondingly terrible FT%. IMHO, they need to see if he can work inside in the nba, that’s where his talent appears to be.
The NBA Playbook analysis says that he doesn't put enough backspin on the ball.
So there’s something wrong with his mechanics there. But apparently he’s close to having perfect form, so there’s reason for hope.
This kid will be an instant fan favorite, so EG got that part right.
But if he cant shoot or rebound or penetrate, Singleton needs to play rather than just blame JVM/Dray for the poor results as is our custom.
Not sure if Singleton is really that much of an upgrade as a shooter
Just last year, Singleton also shot under 50% from the FT line.
Singleton’s 3FG% looks better, but the college three is significantly shorter than the FIBA three.
Right, even Shaq could hit 55%
So, what is really the likelihood that this guy’s FT troubles can’t be corrected? This is one of those unusual situations where the worse the statistic, the more likely it can be fixed. No one shoots 40% from the line – but then, most people look at the hoop before they shoot. Anyway, I wouldn’t despair just yet.
Yeah – I think that Sebastian Pruiti may have found the problem…
I just cannot see how you can shoot a decent percentage from the Free Throw line when you only look at the basket a split second before you release the shot… How can the brain do the necessary (unconscious) calculations for distance, arc and trajectory? You might as well shoot the ball blindfolded or with your eyes closed…..
Boy…….. It sure would be nice to have a Shooting Coach on staff (cough Dave Hopla cough) ………….. just saying…
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
I like that analogy
Think of it this way: Vesely’s been shooting blindfolded – but has still still managed to hit 40%+ from the line.
I don’t think Hopla would come back. He was pretty mad when they let him go.
The Wizards draft report card grades have been staggeringly good...
But this was not exactly the MIT of drafts.
Still in all, you have to like the type of team the Wizards are becoming. Hope the lockout does not last too long.
