I'm begging you please, no Jan Vesely

Guys, I am so bummed by these reports that JV has been promised he will be selected #6 by the Wizards. The saddest part is that these reports have stiffled discussion on this blog. It's our suffering as Wizards fans (and Skins fans, and Terp fans, and Caps fans, etc etc) to have our hopes and dreams dashed.

Can we start a e-mail deluge of Ted begging him not to take Vesely?? Kawhi Leonard doesn't excite me, but Vesely would just totally piss me off. The dude is 6'11''. I don't understand what else he has to offer? Oh, that's right, motor. It sucks really bad that for another year we spent two months agonizing over the draft and proposing trades only to have Ernie stand pat and pick some Euro beanpole who can't make free-throws or play defense.

I know very little about this guy, but my gut tells me HUGE BUST. Stay away, Ernie. Make a trade and get Kanter or Williams. Otherwise, go with a proven American player who can rebound and defend. Shit, I'd be happy with Kemba Walker at this point.

The funny thing is that mock drafts going back to the beginning predicted this. They know Ernie just as well as we do.

This represents the view of the user who wrote the FanPost, and not the entire Bullets Forever community. We're a place of many opinions, not just one.

“Ernie, I know that after countless hours of scouting, you and your staff have decided to draft Jan Vesely. But I’m getting lots of e-mails from people at that BulletsForever blog who think you are making a mistake. One guy said that he knows very little about Vesely, but his gut tells him Vesely will be a huge bust. So I’m going to have to overrule you.”

If it makes you feel any better, Unselds, most on this board (including me) went nuts when Ernie selected JaVale. Now, most don’t want to trade him for the #2 pick.

Damn right!

Ernie must listen to me. Seriously, we all know that drafting prospects is a crap shoot. The list is so long of busts. Vesely is going to be one.

by Unselds on Jun 23, 2011 10:20 AM EDT reply actions

Maybe...most of us 'have a foreboding'

but Vesely’s off ball movement could do a LOT in the halfcourt to open things up for John Wall…if he learns to shoot :p

by Bullet Nation in Exile on Jun 23, 2011 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

He can't shoot so that messes up the spacing, not opening things up for Wall at all.

I used a caveat!

But even off-ball slashing should open things up in the paint

by Bullet Nation in Exile on Jun 23, 2011 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't know what to think...

Apparently, they would have selected Vesely last year if he stayed in the draft. Now there are reports we are selecting another soft European player at #18.

Well, we will have the tallest team on the floor at times.

Yeah, Jan's pretty tough

Issue is he’s not really skilled, but playing for Partizan is no joke.

by Mike Prada on Jun 23, 2011 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed

the David Locke breakdown video had him guarding Flip Murray on multiple occasions

Where can I sign the pettition that we're mailing to Ted and Ernie?

Really?

These rumors are exactly that rumors. I’m guess about 95% of them are not true. Reporters are looking for stories and are trying their hardest to make it interesting. To be honest, I don’t think we should put a lot into most of these, but if it were true, yes, I would agree that we can do better than this guy.

i'm with unselds

i would love to be proven wrong tonight (and i very well might be), but i think the brass is showing their hand.

i think people are high on vesely’s athleticism because he’s white and european, so he stands out as highly athletic among that group, but he will not stand out in the nba. how come no other front office has claimed to be high on vesely? not one!

also, this is a serious question to the community, can anyone remember a successful euro who is not known as a shooter or good defender?

by insidethelines15 on Jun 23, 2011 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

lots of GMs, scouts, etc. rate Vesely highly

They find him to be athletic not because he’s white, but because he’s 7’0" (by NBA standards).

It’s not hard to see from just looking at youtube videos that for a guy that tall he’s athletic.

It’s not unreasonable to assume that if he bulks up some and learns to shoot he could be a very good player in the NBA.

I’d rather have Kanter, but I’m not even sure the Wizards can get him without giving up a lot.

Vesely to me is an excellent option.

by Johnnie Futbol on Jun 23, 2011 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually

From the Youtube videos I saw, he didn’t strike me as particularly athletic. He stills seems a little awkward, to be honest. Sure, he gets up and his length lets him cover ground fairly quickly, but I don’t see this athleticism that everybody is talking about. Granted, I’ve seen what probably amounts to about 5 minutes worth of tape on the kid, so I’m not arguing with the scouts, I’m just confused as to what we’re calling “athletic” these days.

by imperialme on Jun 23, 2011 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

“can anyone remember a successful euro who is not known as a shooter or good defender?”

Um, that’s like 50% of basketball right there. It’s like asking, “has anybody been a good qb who can’t read defenses?”

Also, Vessely is good at blocking shot. He just struggles a bit staying in front of quicker wing problems.

I’m not sold on him, but I think your critique on him is a bit simplified and a bit unreasonable.

by GJennings on Jun 23, 2011 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

going back a bit...

but vlade divacs, another player developed by partizan. Sure he was a good defender, but that’s not what I think of first when I think of him.

Round 2 Pick 3 Peter John Ramos Puerto Rico (foreign)

Puerto Rico is not a foreign country, it’s a US territory, populated by 100% US citizens. Obama was just there (1st US President since JFK to visit Le Isla Del Encanto). Calling it foreign is like calling the victims of Katrina ‘refugees.’

It seems half those picks

were really made by other teams, including:

Round 2 Pick 17 Bill Walker Kansas State
Round 1 Pick 5 Devin Harris Wisconsin

Ha Jan Vesely

Guy has no tangible skills. He’s good at moving without the ball and creating space/getting out of the way, which is great, but I can move without the ball pretty damn well myself. If I was 6-11 maybe Ern would draft me.

by Ron Carlos Jeines on Jun 23, 2011 10:51 AM EDT reply actions

I think the Vesely hate is getting out of hand

The collective wisdom of the board hated the McGee pick. He turned out to be one of the steals of the draft.

The collective wisdom of the board hated the Booker pick. He may well be one of the steals of his draft. He has the 4th highest PER of his draft class and he defends.

The collective wisdom of the board hates the Vesely idea. Hmmm.

I agee

the Vesely pick wouldn’t have the flash of Kanter, but come on…the guy is talented.

Why are all these highlight videos set to awful music??

Anyway, he looks decent in that video. I like that when he got hammered on one foul, he didn’t act hurt or stare down the guy who hacked him. He didn’t even flinch— just walked away. That’s toughness!

Also, he had one move where he went between his legs and back with the ball along the baseline, totally juked his defender and slammed it home. Why do they say he has no handle? He sure did on that play.

I don't remember either pick that way

We had no clue who McGee was. I think everybody was ok with the Booker pick.

by Unselds on Jun 23, 2011 11:52 AM EDT reply actions

Nah

Booker was one of the few people Rook hadn’t even profiled in his exhaustive draft prospectus (Seraphin was another). We got comfortable with Booker pretty quick, but that night was a tall glass of WTF.

And we were pretty unhappy with drafting a string bean project big in Javale at the time.

by sierradave on Jun 23, 2011 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I know this

I freaked out when we picked Jarvis Hayes and Jared Jeffries.

by Unselds on Jun 23, 2011 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

lol

I was happy with both those guys b/c they were college guys that I knew a little about.

by DaGribb on Jun 23, 2011 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Forgive me Unselds

But I don’t understand how you can properly feel so strongly for a guy that “you know very little about.” Just seems to me like you’re jumping to conclusions based on “your gut.”

by Marine4Life51 on Jun 23, 2011 12:02 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

You are correct, Marine

I would submit that the professionals are also going on “gut.”

by Unselds on Jun 23, 2011 12:03 PM EDT reply actions

Fair enough

But everything I’ve heard about guys like Kanter and Vesely from the media and scouts has been pretty positive, and they’re both being touted as “atypical Euros” (i.e., the anti-Andrea Bargnanis, if you know what I mean). I’ve been reading/hearing mixed things about Valanciunas though

by Marine4Life51 on Jun 23, 2011 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

the professionals . . .

have watched hours of tape, watched him live, worked him out, interviewed him. You, on the other hand, “know very little about this guy.” (Not to mention that they make a living evaluating basketball players.)
Your “gut” is meaningless. Theirs—if that is what it is—has something behind it.

JaVale McGee's mix tape at Neveda

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSh4w-UPUk4 This is the only video we had to go on from a bloggers perspective before we drafted JaVale McGee and I see some similarities to Jan Vesely.

by DaGribb on Jun 23, 2011 1:00 PM EDT reply actions

That's what this community is for, I guess

Tell you what, we’ll revisit in two years, and you can call me an idiot if this guy is great. In my great level of knowledge, expertise and clairvoyance , I say pass on Vesely. Ernie had the all that tape and stuff on Pecherov, Navarro and others, and how’d that work out for him?

by Unselds on Jun 23, 2011 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

I feel for the most part

the Wizards have been above average on draft day with EG. I realize that’s definitely up for debate, but Pecherov was the only big strikeout that comes to mind….IF you don’t consider trading away the 5th pick.

by DaGribb on Jun 23, 2011 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

My problem with Vesely

Age 21, 4 yrs in the Pro’s and he shoots 54% from the free throw line—- he’s not 18 or 19. THis should tell you the guy just doesn’t have TOUCH. By 21 you should be making your free throws.

I’ve watched a lot of film on him and he’s nervous when he gets the ball on the wing. He doesn’t have confidence in his Jump Shot.

by NotGivinUpOnDray on Jun 23, 2011 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

I am wavering back and forth on the extreme

I hate the thought of getting Vesely then I don’t mind it (size, upside, position). I would really prefer a Chris Singleton or Kawhi Leonard (and more obviously Enes Kanter) but I think I’ll just roll with the punches from here on out. Time to start trusting the Wizards staff.

Even if you don’t love the Vesely pick, the Wiz still have a chance to get someone good at 18

I'm not going to think of something extra witty or clever to say, I don't want to convince you to see things my way, I just have 2 words for you: JEREMY LAMB

by qthaballa on Jun 23, 2011 5:04 PM EDT reply actions

Dear Jan,

I have been clear in my opinion you will be a bust, but now you are a member of the Washington Wizards. I hope you will prove me wrong, and hit the gym hard. Elbow anybody in the face who messes with John Wall. Practice your free throws. I would highly recommend the services of Dave Hopla. Look him up. Call Brenden Haywood if you need his digits. Keep the hottie. Go to Nats games with Ovechkin. If you’re going to hit the strip clubs, show Andray some of the classier ones. Good luck buddy.

by Unselds on Jun 23, 2011 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

Running the floor!

Vesely runs the floor like a deer and can finish with the best of them….reminds me of Blake Griffin. His help defense looks okay…I saw him spot up for a three and knock it
down…it’s his energy and enthusiasm, his hustle that is his main attribute…something the
Wizzie’s can always use, and the aforementioned ability to finish on the break….
