Spurs-Wolves-Wizards trade
I read on ESPN that the Spurs were looking to move Tony Parker for a top lottery selection. Obviously, we don't have any need for Tony Parker, but as a package for the 2nd pick, he could be useful.
Here's the basic framework.
Wizards get:
2nd pick
N. Pekovic
29th pick
Twolves get:
Tony Parker
18th pick
3 million $ from us
Spurs get
6th pick from Wizards
34 pick from the Wizards
The Twolves gets a veteran point guard to teach Rubio the ropes. They also land the 18th pick and clear some cap space. Kahn gets a more "marque" player (at least in fame). We get Derrick Williams. (and don't have to give up McGee). The Spurs get our cap valuable 2nd round pick, but we still add another first to get a roleplayer. The Spurs begin building their new core.
Any thoughts?

They would trade Tony
Sources are saying the Spurs are ready to move on with George Hill as their starting point guard. I just don’t think the Wolves would want him given that they just landed Rubio and have that position pretty full already.

I was watching PTI yesterday
And they talked about all the pressure that Kahn was putting on Rubio, and how Wilbon thought it was a mistake. He felt the best thing that could happen for Rubio’s development would be to put him in a position where he could transition to the pro-game without having to be the starting point guard.
I don’t disagree that there’s some duplication. Also, if I’m Minnesota, I wish Parker was a better 3-point shooter so I could play them together like Dallas does with Barea and Kidd.
I think a lot of it comes down to how quickly you think Rubio will adjust and if it developing him slower will ultimately get you the player you thought he’d be. From what I read, Rubio really regressed this last year and would benefit from a slower transition. Let Parker-Love carry the team next year.
Finally, I think Kahn has to show so improvement. He doesn’t have to make the playoffs but he needs to show Love and the owner that he can win. If the Wolves are picking this high next year, I think somebody else is making the pick. If you’re Kahn, would you bet your job on Rubio being a top tier PG? I won’t.
I think it's hilarious that Tony Parker could mentor Rubio on the floor...
I mean, sure, as an international transplant, fine, as long as he doesn’t sleep with Kevin Love’s wife, but someone explain to me how his game is like Rubio’s? Steve Nash otoh…but that will NEVER happen

I think it's the opposite
Why would you trade a potential all-star forward who scores absurdly efficiently for a 29 year old point guard who’s extremely reliant on being the fastest guy on the court? Parker’s due for a huge decline very soon and I actually think he’ll be out of the league within four years. He’s great and extremely underrated, but guys like him just don’t last long.

which is why he's perfect for Minnesota
He plays for a year or two with Rubio coming off the bench behind him so Rubs can develop properly without suffering from Patrick Ramset syndrome, then once that “huge decline” comes, Rubio is ready to replace him.

True
But, they’re not looking to add another prospect according to most of the reporters out there. Looking at some of the trades that have been made where a veteran has been moved for a pick:
1. Ray Allen was 31 when he was traded for the 5th pick in the NBA draft.
2. We got Jameson for our 5th pick in the NBA draft.
3. We got Mike Miller and Randy Foye for the 5th pick and some cap relief.
If I was Minnesota, I’d must rather add Parker than some of the other offers such as Gortat + 15th pick.
but why do they need Parker with Rubio finally arriving?
Parker is under30, very good, and with several years left on his deal. He’s not the old man out there showing Rubio what to do, he is the better player out there keeping Rubio on the bench. I just cant see how that makes sense for Minny

It doesn’t.

some schadenfreude for me that they were trying to get Nash.
always makes me happy when other organizations bungle around worse than we do.
tho i’m probably speaking too soon with EG and Kahn discussing lord knows what right now
I think you have to understand the dillemma Kahn is in
He’s running out of scapegoats for his teams failures. He needs to show some improvement in the team’s performance.
If Williams and Rubio struggle, he could be fired. If they add Tony Parker, they probably won’t make the 8th spot, but they won’t finish dead last again. At least, that’s the gamble. I assume that’s the same reason he’s targeted other veterans such as Nash, as well as younger players such as Ellis, Bynum, and McGee.
If you’re playing the long-game, I think you take your chances with Derrick Williams. If you’re playing to win-now, I think the idea of adding Parker is pretty intriguing.

If you trade the #2 pick for Parker
because the savior PG you have been selling for 2yrs is in reality a dud….avoiding dead last isnt going to save your job imho
in fact, i would hope ownership would not allow him to make that trade. #2 for yet ANOTHER pg? crazy!

The exchange might go like this
Kahn: I’m thinking we should acquire another PG
Taylor (owner): Why?
Kahn: Winter is coming.

Why would the Wolves want another PG?

The Wolves would probably need to make a second trade
There’s been reports they’ve been in discussion to move Flynn. Also, they were trying to acquire Nash. Nash, however, didn’t want to play there and only had one year left. Parker has 3 or 4 years left on his contract.
Kahn knows Rubio is going to struggle mightily
and after promoting him as the franchise’s savior for the past 2 years, now time to backpedal and get a “veteran mentor” in there
With Ricky in Minny,
the deal won’t make sense unless Minny uses him as an asset toward another deal. Even then, they won’t get much value for Parker because there’s no mistake that they’re building around Rubio and Love.
this almost seems too good to be true
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
i doubt it but
their are rumors swirling around about minny and sacramento lookin at tony parker… question is will kahn give up d-will for an aging tony parker and ostensibly a role player (18th pick)
bring back darvin ham
Trying to predict Kahn's mind is a recipe for madness
However, I think a few assumptions can be made:
1. He doesn’t want another a rookie
2. He’s look for a player to excite the fanbase
I think the trade fits those demands. I’d also point out that Kahn gets rid of a terrible contract and gets 3 million.
agree
its an interesting proposition… i wouldnt be surprised to see him make some type of move in the next 48 hours
bring back darvin ham
If this happened...
My roommates would be picking up pieces of my exploded brain matter tomorrow evening.
At first I looked at this trade and thought; there’s no way this happens. Then I did some snooping around and it does actually make a lot of sense for all parties involved. The benefits for us are obvious. The Wolves get to cut a terrible contract, get $3M cash, a mid 1st round and Parker, who is, at least the last time I checked, a lot better than Luke Ridnour. I’m banking on Kahn moving Flynn moving now that Rubio has signed. The Spurs, after getting Randolph’d out of the playoffs, are looking to rebuild from the Duncan/Ginobili/Parker years and moving up to #6 helps them. They could draft and stash one of the “high potential” Euros there or take other longer term projects while Duncan plays out his contract.

If the Wolves wanted Tony Parker
Why would they involve the Wizards at all?
Send the 2nd pick and Peckovic to the Spurs for Tony Parker….and the 29th pick…
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
Not entirely unfair
From the Spurs prospective
I’m not sure the Spurs would want to waste their cap space on Peckovic. His contract isn’t an albatross, but I could see the Spurs wanting to use their new cap flexibility to add another piece or just to get their overall number lower.
From the Wolves viewpoint:
I also think the Wolves benefit from getting the 18th instead of the 29th pick. I think its the difference from a borderline starter and a borderline back-up. (though with this draft the difference is less pronounced). The Wolves could also package the 18th and the 20th to move back in the lottery to add a player like Klay Thompson.
Although if the Wolves are just going to sell the pick, I’d agree, the Wizards don’t add that much.
Wolves don't need, nor WANT picks....
They want veterans – they believe they’re too young already – and by adding picks, it just makes them younger.
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
so the 18th pick is valueless to them....
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
I wouldn't say valueless
Like I said in the last line, at the very least, adding another 1st round pick would let them sell it. So it’s an additional 3 million…. nothing to sneeze about. It’s just they’ll be able to get the $3 mil for either the 18th pick or the 29th pick so it’s not an area the Wizards can really improve on.
I don’t disagree that Kahn wants veterans. I’m adding a borderline all-star in decline to his team in this trade. The problem is the labor dispute makes teams nervous to trade,. Even if the lockout is avoided, a new CBA with a the possibility of an amnesty clause has discouraged some teams from engaging in trades. Compounding this problem is a weak draft, which means picks for players trades are going to be slanted against the team trading for the players. It’s a buyer’s market for draft picks. From what I’ve read, I think Kahn is finding it really difficult to acquire a veteran from trades. Given that, I think the rational decision would be to acquire what value you could form the draft.
Finally, if they are trying to trade away any additional pick acquired for another veteran player, they’ll get a better player for 18th than they will for 29th. So it’s hard to say it’s valueless.
Come on
Kahn is not the best GM in the league, and he may even be the worst. But he’s not mentally challenged. I’m a little weary of everyone suggesting trade proposals that make no sense for the TWolves.
Even if his sole motivation is, as you say, to save his job not to make his team better, committing a #5, #6, and #2 draft pick in three years to the point guard position is not going to happen.
He also committed a pick for Ty Lawson too (Just saying)
I actually don’t think it’s madness, since Flynn has been a bust, and Rubio looks like a prospect. I’m amazed that Tony Parker has such little value. He’s a 29 year 3-time all-star. I think he’ll probably play close to his contract for two of the next four years, and then I think he’ll decline, but still be servicable as back-up in the final year.
The trade was based upon an article that said that the Suns and T-Wolves had a discussion about Nash. If they’d be willing to part with the 2nd in a deal for Nash, why not Parker if additional assets are thrown in? Parker is under contract longer, is younger, and would fit with an uptempo style of play. Absent that article, I probably wouldn’t have thought of making this trade. I didn’t just randomly pick a player. Kahn wants to add a veteran PG to mentor Rubio, run the team, and show Love he’s committed to winning. This trade actually does all of it.
Parker has value, but not to MN.
I don’t believe the Nash for #2 either. Unless Gortat was involved.
And he traded Lawson.
