With Rubio a Wolve Utah licking their chops at Irving. Cavs lose hope of getting Kanter

Clevelands plan to get Kanter with the 4th pick if they cannot move up to the #2 pick is looking more gloomy. With the agreement in place for Ricky Rubio to be the next Minnesota Timberwolve Point Guard, it removes almost any  possibility that Enes Kanter will be available at the 4th pick. I believe Clevelands status quo plan all along is Irving at 1 and Kanter at 4. They are trying desperately to move up to get both Irving and Derrick Williams. Minnesota will now take Williams or Kanter with the 2nd pick. I do not see them trading out of their spot now. With the possibility that Williams will go #1 and Kanter at #2 this will make it even harder for any team to move into the #3 spot. Utah needs a point guard after stupidly trading Deron Willilams. Now lady luck could be on their side and if they get Irving at #3 their franchise will be looking very bright once again.

My feeling is that Derrick Williams is a superior talent to Kyrie Irving. I believe Cleveland will also believe that and end up taking him at #1.

#1 Derrick Williams- Cleveland

#2 Enes Kanter- Minnesota

#3. Kyrie Irving- Utah

Irving not going to be at 3

Minnesota doesn’t need any more young guys (I’d rather have Irving that Rubio at this point). Irving is too coveted to fall quietly to #3 Utah.

So of course, teams will try to trade up if that scenario holds that Irving doesn’t go 1. Other lottery teams are in need of a PG like Golden State, Sacramento, Detroit…..I expect the trade rumors to heat up for top 3 picks.

I'm glad I'm not a TWolves fans.

Barcelona is probably looking to upgrade over Rubio at this point, he just cant shoot the ball and therefore isnt enough of a threat to be the playmaker so many envisioned. Now after shooting 22% 3PT this season and never shooting even 40% 2PT in europe he is going to come to the nba and save a crappy franchise? Good luck with that Kahn

I see what you are saying but..

I don’t think this really changes anything. I don’t see the Wolves taking Kanter because a front court of Kanter/ Love is slightly undersized and pretty unimpressive from an athletic standpoint. Their best compliment to Love would be a player like McGee. I think maybe now even more than before they might be looking to trade for a veteran with the addition of another youngster like Rubio. Although if I were the T Wolves I would just draft D Williams and then trade Beasley. Rubio, Williams, and Love would make up a pretty nice trio with guys still developing like Wes Johnson. But I don’t see this Rubio situation changing much of anything.

I agree.

All along Minnesotta has said that it wants veterans, but who can they get ? There were no veterans for Minnesotta involved in that Cleveland trade that went side ways. As for the draft , they need to either reshuffle, or build complements. Kanter is more like Love, than a center. As for Williams, he’s too similar to Beasley. They need a new coach and bench that could get the most from their unique roster.

I agree as well

Minnesota really has a huge need at C. It doesn’t make sense for them to draft another SF. If they can trade out and get a veteran C than they will probably be happy. Getting Williams or Kanter would not make any sense since they have two players that play just like them already.

I guess they cant make a big play for MGasol due to lockout?

surely they would love to move their #2 pick to acquire him or at least i would think so

Suppose Ernie can convince Kahn that Blatche is a "veteran" Center?

Don't get the Overrating of Kanter

He’s a fine prospect and all, but now people are trying to convince themselves he’s going to go ahead of Irving/Williams? Let it go people. He’s not that good and outside Kanter’s household and this message board, I don’t see anyone else putting him on the same tier as Williams/Irving. In fact, many experts have several other players rated ahead of Kanter (i.e. Knight or Valanciunas).

Kanter may very well still go to Cleveland at #4, but it’s not nearly set in stone.

I’m losing hope of trading with the Wolves.

I think the obvious immediate thought here is "McGee and the 6 for the 2!" But that might be far too costly. If McGee was in this draft, and we had the number 2 pick, we’d probably be considering him. So to trade him AND the #6 is probably too much. That said, I don’t think they’d go for a straight #2-for-McGee swap.

Maybe they’d take Blatche and the 6, but I doubt it. Who knows with Kahn? We should at least be on the phone.

I have no good signature ideas.

Oh, and

If I haven’t been making this clear enough since February, I’d want Derrick Williams there.

I have no good signature ideas.

If JaVale was in this draft he most likely would go #1 overall

The only other two possible would be Williams and Irving going ahead of JaVale..
ZERO CHANCE. ZERO CHANCE. ZERO CHANCE JaVale gets traded for any of these draft picks.

I don't get it

I don’t get why this makes Kanter a lock for MN.

I don't get it

I don’t get why people assume Utah will take Kanter

by Rooper on Jun 2, 2011 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

You may think that

But I do not see an experts calling Kanter a sure thing. In fact, he’s pretty far from it. Still may be a great NBA player, but there’s virtually nothing on him outside on all-star Summit game.

by Rooper on Jun 3, 2011 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess the question is:

Is Kyrie Irving really that much more of a lock to be a franchise player than Derrick Williams? Because if not, the Cavs could very well take Derrick Williams + Brandon Knight in this draft. Or else it would be Kyrie Irving + ____(insert name of player not as highly prized as Williams/Kanter/Knight).
In Williams and Knight, the Cavs get two of the top5 players in the draft. With Irving, they’ll get a top2 player but won’t be picking up another PG at #4, and thus will have to go lower down the talent chart for their pick.
If Williams and Knight are of approximate equal value, wouldn’t it make more sense that the Cavs take Williams with #1, pray that Minnesota passes on a PG at #2, and draft Knight at #4?

by zimz on Jun 2, 2011 12:48 PM EDT reply actions

My thinking as well

And would the Cavs really be disappointed if they ended up with Williams and Kanter or Williams and Walker? They need help everywhere, and they’ll be in the lottery again next year regardless.

by steadyhand on Jun 2, 2011 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Why not?

Irving, Williams and Kanter have been hailed as the “can’t miss” prospects of this draft since Day 1. Minnesota just got their PG so they won’t be taking another one. If anything, they’d deal their pick to someone who would draft one of those three with the second pick. Thus if Cavs take Williams with #1, Minnesota takes Kanter at #2, Utah takes Irving at #3, and Knight would fall to them at #4.

Which leads me to this question: Do we have any chance at all of swapping picks with Minnesota now that they would most likely be targeting a C? If we do this, they won’t have to reach to draft Valanciunas/Tristan Thompson/Biyombo, and we can get Williams or Kanter, whoever falls to #2.

by zimz on Jun 2, 2011 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

But do those indications include Irving not going #1? If not, doesn't matter.

If they take Williams that leaves 2 picks before 4. MN, Utah. Unless BOTH of them take PGs the Cavs will get either Irving or Knight at 4. Even if both take PGs Kemba Walker is still there.

by Jheiser3 on Jun 2, 2011 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah if i was cleveland I draft williams

it doesn’t really seem like irving has a huge edge over williams right now
and he didnt even take part in all of the drills and stuff which only makes me question
whether he’s really the stud everyone thinks he is
cleveland basically needs help in every position and theres lots of good point guards in this draft, and in fact i think the safest picks in this draft are walker and knight
and it’s not like you need a stud point guard to win championships
just look at the last decade, sure the league is “pg driven” today but whens the last time a pg superstar won anyway?

by Young Wook Lee on Jun 4, 2011 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

Sounds like

Utah is open to moving 3 with Kanter as the likely target because otherwise the Cavs will take him at 4. We have our target.
