This does not seem like a very smart thing for Andray Blatche to be involved in.

Holy crap

Is this legit?

Can't he just have an odd alter-ego that lifts weights?

Dray is spending the summer in Miami, that should work out well.

I'm leaning towards Dray's gotta go

I’d always been a big supporter and I do like the guy….lord knows if I was in his shoes I’d be in Miami with half-naked women swarming all over me too.

But late nights drinking out at the club is not how reach the elite fitness level needed to be an all-star level nba player. Yeah it’s only May 4, but that kind of lifestyle doesnt have an on/off switch.

Not to be outdone

Javale was on Sportsnation yesterday and Beadle/Cowdung were giving him the business about his attempted foul line dunk at Sacramento (you know, the 20+ pt loss) at the end of the game. I kid you not, he says, “it got 500k hits on YouTube.” God help these young rich idiots.

Hmmmm, one was on TV shrugging off his idiotic play(s)

What exactly is JaVale supposed to say

When a couple of hosts on a light-hearted TV show waive an embarrassing play at him and say “Hey, what do you think?”

If you’re in his spot, and you have no idea that’s coming, what do you do?

by Mike Prada on May 4, 2011 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

If I have to pick between Blatche hosting a party at a night club (not a strip joint) with a rated R title and weight lifting Pierre McGee, I pick weight lifting Pierre 1 million times out of 1 million.

The point is

Neither of them seem ready to grow up. AB wants to make it rain & Javale is still in denial about his boneheaded play. Saying “it got 500k hits on YouTube” is ignorant and reeks of a player not taking his job all that seriously. Just my opinion.

Not the Tell-Tale Comment

But, I don’t think JaVale McGee’s comments do not warrant a bit of flack. I watched the whole segment. He seemed pretty nervous. He has not done that many interviews in his career. He got his own segment on ESPN. It’s a scary moment for anybody. That’s why I don’t think it’s that same thing as Blatche. Unless Blatche had a gun to his head and was told “host a lap dance party or die,” he wasn’t under any stress when he decided to do what he did.

AB’s prior arrests make this a bad decision. Even if he does nothing wrong, if a bad situation arises, he puts himself in a terrible position. This isn’t as stupid as Pacman Jones going to a club before meeting with Roger Goodell, but it’s obviously not a great move.

As for why I don’t think McGee should be completely left off the hook… Could you imagine John Wall ever making a joke about his youtube hits on a busted play? Kobe Bryant? Lebron James (Well, he’d probably hide the video so it never got to youtube.) . The knock on McGee is that he only cares about his highlights. Sometimes under stress, we let slip what we’re really thinking. I think a lot of people think that’s what happened with the comment. I’m not sure, but it does raise my eyebrows a bit. If he said “yeah, that was embarrassing,” or “coach really laid into me after that one.” nobody would have noticed. It sticks because it feeds into what we fear about McGee.

I think JaVale was just making a joke of himself, he knows that it was dumb and it was a show.

Not a big deal.

TNT should've treated Lebron's return to Cleveland game like 2k11 and cut the game off after the Cavs were down by 30. lol

Well, our policy says we can’t call players demeaning names. But I would if I could.

The point of such tirade would have been: this is one more piece of evidence that Blatche is irredeemable; although any pure-hearted fan would hold out hope. I mean, lap-dance M.C.? Any capable P.R. professional would run away from this guy in fear, if s/he were offered to try to represent him.

by Tbonebullets on May 4, 2011 11:20 AM EDT reply actions

THAT'S IT!

GET RID OF THIS GUY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I’M SICK AND TIRED OF HEARING BAD PUBLICITY ABOUT OUR PLAYERS! ON THE COURT, I CAN TAKE IT, BUT OFF THE COURT!? AGAIN AND AGAIN?!

AND FOR GOD’S SAKES! THIS IS IN MIAMI OF ALL PLACES! WHO WANTS TO SEE HIM THERE BESIDES FRIENDS AND MAYBE SOME OF THE DANCERS?!

It’s not Andray going to the club that makes me furious. It’s the offseason, and Dray is entitled to have a break to get some R&R. It’s the fact that he’s in the club, hosting a party with a risque title. I get that athletes do host these events, and so do entertainers, but when an athlete who is consistently harped on for inconsistent play as well as having a reputation for not being in the best of situations off the court, this is something you just SHOULD NOT do. Entertainers like the Kardashian ladies, Paris Hilton, and Jay Z can host these parties without damage to their reputations, because for the first two at least, they’re already viewed as pretty low class already. But athletes just walk a finer line in the same regard.

Makes me wonder...

if he is hosting lapdance night on a Tuesday, what is he doing on a Friday????

by HIBACHI GOLD on May 4, 2011 11:58 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Most should know I am not a Dray fan, but

let’s be clear and fair.

1. That is the name of a night at a club in Miami Beach. It does not appear to be a gentlemen’s club. I can’t find anything that mentions there were “lap dances” any more than “Make it Rain” Sundays at some random club in DC means everyone in the club is throwing up dollar bills all night.

2. He is hosting a party at a club on the night of a NBA playoff game. The club’s name is Cameo…not Lapdance. The promoter comes up with the marketing, not the person getting paid to host.

So I am willing to wait for the full story. If he is just hosting a party with a name used to grab attention, there are far worse offenses.

That being said, if I were Dray, I wouldn’t be hosting parties at clubs in Miami Beach. But that is just me.

by DavidDunn on May 4, 2011 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

yeah...if he really wants to go out, go...

but why give permission to put your name on the flyer….unless it is a close family friend….it isn’t like he is going to pull in people, so he couldn’t be paid enough for the downside of this pr hit…

I think there is just some common sense missing.

by DavidDunn on May 4, 2011 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

If he was going to host a party

Blatche could try to do it on a different day there. But the problem is that Cameo is only open on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. I doubt the guys at Cameo would want him to host on Friday or Saturday, even if he were close with one of the higher ups there, since those nights would be reserved for a much bigger celebrity or at least someone local…

Still, this isn’t any vindication for him..

by thewiz06 on May 4, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

True

he isn’t hosting this at a strip club.

Link below out of an abundance of caution is NSFW, showing a pole contest from the same night club
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov0pRtTkoeM

This isn’t too uncommon with pole dance contests, but still, doing this at an NBA playoff city isn’t the best thing for him to do. Not to mention he is on the worst team in the same division that Miami is in….

Young millionaire in South Beach

instantly exposed to gorgeous models/strippers/hookers and mountains of cocaine. That’s just how it is. Has Dray matured enough to spend his offseason down there AND do all the work he needs to do to be much better coming into camp next season? Guess we’ll find out.

and NO i am not saying Dray has a drug problem, just that that’s what goes on down there even moreso than here

by DCrez on May 4, 2011 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Except

it shows a tremendous lack of common sense.

Given the Washington Wizards recent past – what do you think the organization thought of his decision?

It’s obvious by looking at the posts here what the average Washington Wizard fan thinks of Blatche of hosting a party called “Lapdance Tuesday”….

Not that hosting a party is bad, in and of itself – I look back at Gilbert Arenas’ lavish birthday party, for instance…… but Blatche’s history of clubbing and late night chicanery is now approaching epic scale; and THIS episode just adds another (very heavy) straw to the camel’s back…..

I would much rather be reading about Andray Blatche’s off-season work schedule – like his hard work with Gene Banks and the other assistant Coaches on his post game – or about him going to Chicago to work with Tim Grover at ATTACK Athletics on his conditioning – or how he’s in the weight room every other day pumping iron, and getting stronger…..

But no… Instead, I get to read about him partying….. great.

He's "delightfully cranky"

I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.

Rule 7 of Ted's vision for a championship team is something Dray is just not following.
7. No jerks allowed. Implement a no jerk policy. Draft and develop and keep high character people. Team chemistry is vital to success. Make sure the best and highest paid players are coachable, show respect to the system, want to be in the city, love to welcome new, young players to the team, have respect for the fan base, show joy in their occupation, get the system, believe in the coaches, have fun in practice, and want to be gym rats. Dump [players who become distractions as soon as an opportunity presents itself]. Life is too short to drink bad wine.

He has been coachable and he’s respected the system more or less, but is he a high character guy or at least striving to get there? I think all of us agree that his going to a party or even hosting a party is not a bad thing. It is the publicity of hosting a party with that name which is not a good thing.

I just dont see

That just because of his past he shouldnt be allowed to do legal things. Because of his mistakes in the past he shouldnt be allowed to party ever? I cant get there, He’s a young rich man, let the man live, its unrealistic to think hes gonna workout like a mad-man all off-season. We’d all like that but thats not just not the real world we live in and i cant fault this.

In plenty of jobs there are restrictions people have from doing things that are otherwise legal

Military personnel have plenty of those, but then again they have their own court system for these kinds of offenses, like fraternization for example.

For NBA players though . . .

it’s usually understood that they’re in the family entertainment business (and all the benefits and trade-offs that that entails). The actions of each individual reflect back on the league as a whole. That may not be fair on some level, but that’s the way it is.

If Blatche still had an agent, I think he might have thought twice about this one.

Personally, I think this is funny as hell, but you still have to be smart about these kind of things. I don’t know what the language of his current contract is, but I could see something like this being leveraged by an owner to off-load a contract that he didn’t like. In the middle of a contract negotiation too, these are the kind of things that one side can use against the other side. There may not be any blow-back or fallout from this, but regardless of how you cut it this was not a smart move.

by Vegas010 on May 4, 2011 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha whatever. It's hard to care about what this guy does anymore.

Obviously stupid to put your name and face on an event like this, especially when your name is Andray Blatche. Dude isn’t going to change. But for a guy who is so sensitive to criticism, you would think a guy his age would know better than to do this. He is just not an smart guy I guess.

Jesus

None of us know what kind of conditioning program he’s involved in or what his summer plans are. If he sucked, I’d understand the hate. If he couldn’t coexist with his teammates, I’d understand the hate. I think maybe people think he brings shame upon the franchise by being low-class, but I don’t think anyone outside of DC cares even a little. The guy’s job is basketball player, not professional gentleman. THE ONLY ONES BOTHERED BY THIS ARE YOU!!!

by people who see what Wizards fans say about him. A story like the one we’re currently discussing can only a story when a site like this chooses to make it one, and if a bunch of Wizards fans choose to overreact to it. Fans of other teams have their own scapegoats to worry about.

It won’t take much time, all you have to do is show an uptick in March/April, a steep dropoff in May, followed by a flatline until the following Spring.

More bad judgment? Yes.

A travesty worthy of sending a potential 18/9 power forward with upside to Sacramento/Minnesota/Utah for pennies on the dollar? No.

Let’s keep this all in perspective folks. Dre comes back healthy, 20 lbs ligher, and plays up to his potential and he can hit as many clubs as he wants. Who cares?

by averagebro on May 4, 2011 3:32 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I wouldn't even go as far as to say bad judgement

Personally I think the only people that care are fans like us. The types that blog in the offseason about a lottery team… Bet you dollars to donuts that Flip, EG, and Leonsis (and other players, and most NBA insiders or reporters) could care less as long as he makes it out without any stab wounds or arrests, and as long as he makes it to his next scheduled workout, practice or film session.

This is not even newsworthy on BF, IMO. Neither is the Pierre thing. Lighten up people. We were all young adults once before.

…any GM would. Here’s the picture: the player you would most like to see improve his body moves to Miami for the Summer. That’s like moving to Ibeza, or Cancun, or whatever party place you would care to name, when you should be working out. To NOT recognize it as bad judgment is to ignore the reality of human nature…and even more so the human in question, given his record.

If he moves to Miami

and prepares himself for next season then I’m fine with it.

The party he hosted and the non-PC name are things that continue to make us a punchline and as a joke to other NBA teams.

by thewiz06 on May 5, 2011 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Players are also public figures . . .

and role models. It’s the double-edged sword of celebrity.

In order to be part of the family entertainment industry, you have to abide by certain rules. Those who respect the rules can make a lot of money in a very short amount of time. Public image is important.

The main saving grace here is that Andray isn’t much of a celebrity, so this news probably won’t travel far. I’m sure though that if Leonsis sees this, he is not going to be happy. For a team in the family entertainment business where is the upside in having an employee sponsoring Lapdance Tuesdays?

by Vegas010 on May 4, 2011 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Sadly, we're stuck with him

…and we as fans will probably always lament that he didn’t have the ambition to reach his ceiling during his prime. But he could still be very effective, and much less of a public embarrassment, coming off the bench as a 4/5. We just need to have a player who takes his profession seriously starting at the power forward spot. Heck, maybe he’ll wake up when he’s 30, realize all the time he’s lost, and put a few very good seasons together.

by Tbonebullets on May 4, 2011 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Miley Cyrus is in the familt entertainment business.

I don’t buy that argument one bit.

If it was that important to the league (or detrimental to the league’s image), it would be off limits. The league is mum on the issue, at least publicly, so apparently the league doesn’t buy that argument either. Of course image matters. That’s why players get reprimanded 9or worse) when the do something wrong.

by jones-y on May 4, 2011 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Billy Hunter will fight tooth and nail to make sure players are still allowed to host parties at night clubs

if the owners and David Stern try to make an issue of it, along with some of the other ridiculously absurd statements he made in response to owners’ demands.

I have nothing against him, because this is his job, but if the players are the ones primarily responsible for making him say these things for them, I do feel sorry for him being the whipping boy for these things.

by thewiz06 on May 5, 2011 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes . . .

and her photo shoot with Vanity Fair a few years back created problems between her and Disney. At the end of the day it is a business where public image matters. The NBA may have fewer restrictions, but public image still matters.

As far as the league reaction goes, if Blatche was a more high profile figure and this had somehow become national news, it would be a problem. The league does not care what players do in private, but the league does care about its image.

As far as whether this is “wrong” in a moral sense — personally it doesn’t bother me. There’s another question about whether its “wrong” as a business decision. I think there are much worse things that a player could do, but this is still one of those moves that I don’t really see the upside too (as far as public image goes) — I can see some negative potential.

by Vegas010 on May 5, 2011 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions

and her photo shoot with Vanity Fair a few years back created problems between her and Disney.

Can’t say the same about Blatche hosting this party. And that’s the real bottom line. Its not wrong as a business decision because it has no impact on the conduct of business. None.

if Blatche was a more high profile figure and this had somehow become national news, it would be a problem.
Perhaps. Given that he isn’t, I don’t see why this is a discussion point.

The NBA needs to have a much stronger conduct policy

which would allow immediate contract termination in certain circumstances. Gilbert unfortunately or fortunately (depending on how you view the issue) is the poster child for this.

Blatche shouldn’t be fired for this, but I would say that this wouldn’t fall under the policy unless he did something stupid in the club which we aren’t aware of, for now.

Unless he's risking a broken foot or a torn ACL, i really don't see what the big deal is

Athletes go to strip clubs, and normal clubs, and even if this is “bad publicity” who cares if he plays well next season. Andray is getting paid money to play basketball, not to be a moral compass. As long as it isn’t illegal, or affects his game, i could care less about what he does in the off season.

Blatche got killed for this by ESPN's Ryen Russillo and SI's Zach Low

on the NBA today podcast they stopped analysing the 2-0 Mavs lead over the Lakers to talk about “Andray Blatche Fool!” and his lapdance party….. i seriously felt embarished listening to it. They then went on making fun of McGee saying Scot van Pelt and Rusillo wondered what the hell hé of all people was doing there.

We’re a joke to them.

Do not give up on Andray!

Mark my words. He will be great one day.

I admit he doesn’t think before he speaks sometiems, sometimes hangs w/the wrong crowed. But really he’s just a kid, and he has certainly grown up a lot in many ways since we first drafted him. He’s a very likeable guy to tell you the truth. From all accounts coaches and players like him, he does a lot more for the community than most people think, and on the court he’s had a lot of injuries…keep in mind the guy was SHOT his first year. I mean, that’ll set u back

I think some people are overreacting. What player in the offseason doesn’t goto clubs? I used to see jordan at 1223 all the time when he was in DC. Lebron too. ANd that babe ruth fella supposedly he went out nightly. The point is… andray’s young and single, earned a big contract…and its his offseason. It’s not like he’s doing drugs and getting in trouble.

Will he be a star? No. but he can definately be an all star in this league when he’s healthy…remmeber the last week of the season he dominated al ahortford, and the hawks had a lot to play for.

He doesn’t need to be traded…he just needs a girlfriend thats all. Don’t give up on him yet!
