2011 NBA Draft Combine Athletic Testing Results For Key Wizards Draft Hopefuls
The athletic testing results for everyone who attended the 2011 NBA Draft Combine in Chicago are now public. These numbers don't mean very much and certainly mean less than the measurements, because people have bad days testing. You probably remember how Kevin Durant couldn't bench 185 pounds one time, and he turned out pretty well. He also supposedly only had a 33-inch vertical, and Brendan Haywood can certainly testify that Durant can jump higher than that.
Nevertheless, here are the figures for key Wizards' draft potentials. Here's a database to compare them to past prospects.
No-step vertical
- Marshon Brooks: 34 inches
- Kenneth Faried: 30.5 inches

So Tyler Honeycut
must be the next Kevin Durant then. Hard to believe a soon-to-be professional athlete can’t bench his weight at least once though.
we knew he needed strength
he won’t be asked to bench anything in an NBA game. Bench is also much harder on a guy with long arms.
just for the record,
It’s not that Honeycutt couldn’t bench, it’s that he chose not to bench. He declined this part of the testing, along with McCamey. Not saying he would bench, but I guess he knew this wouldn’t be a strength. Now to find out what happened to K.Leonard…
im more concerned leonard did not shoot.

I forgot about Durant testing so crappy
And only a 33" vert??? That was maybe the highest I have ever seen anybody get on an in-game contested dunk. His elbow was above the box.
This stuff really is pointless…. I know, not really.
Screw rational basketball analysis. I <3 Jordan Crawford.

No, it's fairly close to pointless

to me its about watching to see how the numbers meet up with how a guy looks
if anything is a big surprise (good or bad) then you have to go look into why that is.
His vert probably is around 33". The most popular video of that dunk is from the ground and makes him look a lot higher than he really is. His forearm was at best at the rim.don’t forget he has a massive wingspan.

Also, JWill's combine numbers are U-G-L-Y
In the bottom 5 of every category except Bench Press (where you’d expect a widebody like him to excel, but he didn’t crack the top 5 there either), despite his intense training in Vegas.
Don't sleep on Jeremy Tyler!
For whatever these measurements are worth, he tested out terrific and that was sporting 13% bodyfat and heavier than either Kanter or Vucevik
hand length is comparable to Kanter and Vucevik, but hand width is much smaller
What does that mean? He has a huge “eff you” finger and small thumbs/pinkies? Big palms and small fingers? Small palms and big fingers??
not sure
but we’ve seen what small hands can do to an otherwise imposing physical specimen like Kwame Brown. Watching Tyler fumble passes during the combine didn’t ease those concerns. He’s more likely to be the next Felton Spencer, which is fine as long as you draft him to be that.
Can you really make that determination can be made by a hand measurement?
Didnt Barkley have small hands? There is video of everybody fumbling passes….i’m not sure what to make of it.
its not one data point, or video
Its what your eyes see that then gets backed up by the measurements. If they are seeing more evidence of issues with his hands that will limit his true upside.
didn't like his interview
he talked about jumping 40 inches and was 8 inches shy of that. talked about being in good shape and he’s at 14% body fat. just warning signs that his perception of how he’s doing is pretty far off from the reality of things. that’s something that ends up turning into a problem a lot of times. on a team that has Blatche I’d stay away. if we trade Blatche then Tyler can be brought in with #34 if he’s still there. wouldn’t take him with #18.
at what point in the draft are you looking at potential mainly?
Get that kid at 10% bodyfat and he would have crushed every big at the combine for these tests. On the other hand, why isnt he at 10% right now?
Intriguing prospect….but it does seem like Dray is the last guy you’d want next to him
depends on the team
a stacked team drafting at the end of the first round like the Spurs seem to be always thinking what a guy can do two or three years down the road. seems like their 2nd round picks are the ones they are thinking what a guy can do now instead.
for the Wiz…i gotta think its somewhere in the middle. want your 1st rounder to be able to play soon since there are so many holes. but at the same time you know this team won’t be contending for a title until at least few years down the road. although with the right pick at #6 or a surprise contribution from #18 they could be in the fight for the #8 spot next year in the East. any team in the East has a chance at that spot going into any given year.
I personally think he can play PF.
TNT should've treated Lebron's return to Cleveland game like 2k11 and cut the game off after the Cavs were down by 30. lol
see a lot of chris singleton...
…in there also. really hope he is around at 18. could be a great defensive presence.
Can you post the modified lane agility numbers?
I think I like that drill better than the traditional one. The traditional one puts too much emphasis on a player’s ability to run backwards, which isn’t so relevent.
Modified Lane Agility top 10
Norris Cole 5.05
Jimmer Fredette 5.11
Andrew Goudelock 5.13
Brandon Knight 5.27
Cory Joseph 5.27
Jon Leuer 5.34
Scotty Hopson 5.34
David Lighty 5.35
Marshon Brooks 5.37

The guys we're interested in
1. Marshon Brooks: 5.37
2. Tristan Thompson: 5.4
3. Tyler Honeycutt: 5.49
4. Derrick Williams: 5.49
5. Klay Thompson: 5.55
6. Chris Singleton: 5.59
7. Kenneth Faried: 5.64
8. Jordan Hamilton: 5.65
9. Enes Kanter: 5.66
10. Kawhi Leonard: 5.71
So it looks more or less the same as the regular lane agility test except for Kanter and Honeycutt. Kanter was 5th on our list in the regular test, 9th in the modified test. Honeycutt was 10th in the regular test, tied for 3rd/4th in the modified.
Regular, you go around the painted area twice, first clockwise, then reverse direction and do it counterclockwise. You have to keep your shoulders facing in one direction the entire time, so sometimes you’re running straight ahead, sometimes you’re shuffling left, sometimes shuffling right, sometimes running backwards.
Modified, you stand in the middle, and one of two lights turns on. You move in that direction until your foot crosses a line, then move back to cross a line on the other side of your starting point, then return to the middle. Also tests your reaction time, because you don’t know which light will turn on.
Video from last year, check out the first two drills that get run. First (with Wall, #26) is the standard, second (with Turner, #24) is the modified.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnYCEyBDMR0
I think Kanter’s placement on the regular vs modified lane agility lists gives us a clue as to how much he prepared for the combine. Instead of focusing solely on basketball, if you add a couple of cornerback drills to your routine, you can probably make a big improvement in the running backwards part of the regular lane agility test.
having to keep your shoulders forward in the modified version is test i would like to see.
looks like 260 pounds fatty Jeremy Tyler tested very well yet again, if he goes to the Spurs or somewhere like that where there’s no nonsense allowed they could be getting a real steal.
yeah would be a great spot for him...
actually we could send Blatche to the Spurs and all of the sudden he’d probably become a professional too. helps having a good organization and a demanding coach.
Last year
We picked Wall and Booker to help immediately. They were the 2 fastest players tested at 3.14 and 3.10 respectively.
This year Singleton, Honeycutt, Brooks, Knight and Mlacolm Lee all bested them, both. Wow.
JaJuan Johnson continues to put up good numbers, both in these stats and the shooting stats. 6’10, 7’2 wingspan, best max vert reach at 12’1.5, same as the best last year: Derrick Favors.
i like Lee as the #34 pick.
could be a nice back up to both PG and SG.
Shaq
He had a 36" max vert; higher than Derrick Williams and 3.5" higher than JaVale. That’s insane…
Now throw in the fact that he was 300 lbs, then
And THAT is how you destroy backboards.
Screw rational basketball analysis. I <3 Jordan Crawford.

Some results depend on position
When I see Vucevic’s numbers (max vert, bp, and agility ), I see a big stiff begging to get dunked on . So, I am officially off that wagon ! Other results , however, have shed some real light. Harper from Richmond, Tyler from intl., and LaJuan Johnson have showed their ability in shooting, agility ,and max vert reach. [ Pause : Did you see Harris’ shooting ?…DAAYYUM! ] Personally, if a guy with a 7’6 reach can’t bp 180lbs., I have no problem if he’s a wing and 6’9 in shoes. Other than that, I shiver to think my 16 y/o son could kick his can. I can’t predict what will happen with the sixth pick , but I know EG can really " get his man" at #18 and #34 .
OOOOOPS
I was referring to Harper’s shooting……and, who thinks he could play sf?
by Kevin Biscoe on May 26, 2011 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions
he might be smart enough to get outside the dotted line
and take a charge. i don’t see his number as being horrible considering he’s just below 7 foot and 260 lbs with a serious wingspan.
a guy like Jordan Williams though. Yeah he’s now undersized and slow and can’t jump.
or shoot…he should have stayed in school for sure. good rebounder though

Just to reiterate what I stated in my fanpost
Kanter’s numbers are a little bit better than Deandre Jordan’s and Greg Monroe’s. FWIW.
by DavidDunn on May 26, 2011 1:13 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
i dont know what to make of Kanter's stats
on one hand they are passable-to-good coupled with a terrific treadmill.
On the other, this is the absolute very most athletic he will be in his entire life. Been training and dieting for months, with Grover no less, this is his peak, peak self in terms of vert, speed, etc etc…..and it’s not as good as some guys like Tyler who clearly can get into far better shape than he is now, and barely better than a guy like Monroe who often showed up fat.
So what are you really looking at with Kanter? A PF with good enough athleticism that it’s never an issue? Or a guy that is immediately going to be 10pounds heavier and suddenly be a below-the-rim tree trunk that cant defend any long, explosive players?
will Tyler always be a guy who's out of shape though?
that’s the thing going forward for the Wiz. part of changing the culture is bringing in guys who don’t have the motivation question hanging over their head.
good question! he will prob drop off from his peak. but he has good fundamentals seems to know how to use his body. high IQ and fundamentals matter a lot. kevin love is not the fastest, strongest, or biggest, but he knows how to get them.
by les boulez bomber on May 26, 2011 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Fair questions
I have not been as worried about Kanter’s mobility as you have over the last few months, but I think he has performed well enough, as to erase SOME concerns about his athleticism.
I get your points about this is the prime condition of his entire life and whatnot, trust me. And as many have pointed out, he may not be able to handle Amare’s speed in the post, but Amare can’t handle his strength on the other end either.
Screw rational basketball analysis. I <3 Jordan Crawford.
by returnofswagger on May 26, 2011 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I also expected Kanter to have slightly better combine stats. I mean, he’s certainly athletic enough to be a high pick, but most years he would not be a top-3 pick, imo, but rather mid-lotto. But who knows this year…my impression of the numbers is that there are a lot of guys who would traditionally be mid-first round quality and that’s it.
by Tbonebullets on May 26, 2011 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions
not sure about that
1) he still might not be a top 3 pick.
2) even if all the guys who stayed in college came out this year its possible he’s still be top 5. only Barnes would be guaranteed to go above him. Sullinger probably wouldn’t. And I’d put money that Jones wouldn’t go ahead of him either.
I dont know, Terrence Jones is enormous.
is there a chance GMs are actually looking at Kanter as the safest pick but without the ceiling of Valunciunas and some others? There must be some valid reason DX sees him to us at 6th…maybe we can hope….
Great pick at 6th. A big, strong player who will score and rebound but struggle defensively is still a very good player. If that’s what he realistically is as a player…he could be a nice piece to our rotation and always keep Dray working hard. And if he is in there banging for boards while Javale is contesting all over the place….it could work defensively too
i agree with everything you said. and i think he is viewed as a safer pick. he should be a double double guy, but prob not an all star. more visability- lower ceiling. and he will keep our current bigs honest. i think for us the draft starts when the #6 draft clock starts ticking. all this other stuff is just fun speculation to pass the time

That Draft Express database is awesome
I don’t even care about this combine stuff and I could still spend all day looking at it.
3/4 Sprint time for Singleton.
It’s pretty impressive on its own. But then you factor in that he’s 230 lbs and the others at the top are under 200 or just above it then it really becomes impressive to me. That’s a big guy really moving.
Tristan Thompson’s lane agility is especially impressive for the same reason. A big kid like that having that type of agility is special.
Pretty impressive numbers for Singleton all around

Amazing numbers.
He’s a steal at 18 at this point, wouldn’t be suprised if his stock has him jumping into the top ten.
Terrific Length, Terrific Strength, Impressive Speed/Verts. Most likely the best defender in the draft.
Geting it done.
interesting tibits here
I think Kanter’s a beast with his testing. Incredibly athletic for a player his size it compares very well for him to be effective despite a lack of long arms to be effective at the NBA level.
I disagree that this is the peak for him athletically I think pro’s the good commited ones train themselves and get stronger and smarter about training. They have to maintain their standing yearly and push themselves harder as they go to get big paydays etc etc.
I’m not on the kanter bandwagon but his testing wet terrifc, I’m not sold on Kanter’s skill level or playing ability but these numbers help him.
To me Singleton is making more and more sense at 6 he or Biyombo. I wouldn’t mind Alex Burks either but Singleton has the length athleticism and toughness that we could plug in from day 1.
Can't help but notice I keep seeing Marshon Brooks in the top 10 for most of the categories
Something very intriguing about this guy, seems like he should be a top 10 pick, even if he did play on a bad team. He seems to have as high a skill set as anyone in the draft. Is his attitude really that bad? Or is he possibly just getting a bad rep??
Hopefully he gets a workout invite with the Wiz and possibly a look with the 18th pick. If he can play D (looks like he has the ability to) , and be able to pass the ball every now and thenhe may be an complete steal! We can always look for a defenive stopper with the 34th pick if not another fringe big man.

A four year guy...
as I remember… but you are right those numbers are fairly eye-popping. He may be the kind of player that a playoff team grabs in the 20s and gets immediate results with.
Another thing is that he seems to be a guy that is always looking to improve his game
on every level he has increased his production drastically, HS and college

chad ford and tim grover say he has the kobe attitude
and that is a winning attitude…where you want to destroy your opponent…I like that competitive fire…also in the workout taht ford watched, he noted that he was getting to the rim and converting against singletons impressive D
DraftExpress has him going to the Bulls late 1st round...
Cheaper than offering to Nick Young, yes?
brooks will be better than nick young
he put up some ridiculous scoring games this season which nick young never even did in college….he has a much better rounded game…issue is, he seems like a high usage player and not sure he’d thrive with wall and crawford
I highly doub he'll be better than Young
He’s not by far a better rebounder than Nick Young, when both played on the wing Young averaged 4 rpg in his Fr. and Jr. seasons, and even had 6 rpg as a Sophomore. Brooks played PF alot for Providence, and even though Young played some PF for USC, he had Taj Gibson getting rebounds with him as a Jr. and he didn’t play down there as much as Brooks did. When Greedy Peterson was at Providence, Brooks’ rebound numbers were much more realistic.
Young is a good deal better than Brooks was at USC too when he declared. Young has a better handle, 1st step, jump shot and he’s been bigger and a good bit more athletic. On top of having more moves and ways to score. Young was a much better overall talent than Brooks was coming out of college, phsyically, athletically and in terms of his skills. I think people are looking at Brooks’ numbers and hyping him too much. He’ll carve out a role for a team, but his stats are inflated and I have questions about his overall game and how efficient he’ll be. And he play plays NO defense.
by iNFaMOUS SwaGG on May 26, 2011 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions
he is
He is by far a better rebounder than NY was in college. NY does one thing: score. Brooks scores, rebounds and even passes once and awhile despite playing with far less help than Nick did.
All that said, its whats between the ears where Young can’t compete.
Actually...they are very identical if you look at their final averages
Nick at USC averaged 15.5pts / 5.1rebs / 1.4asts in 31.1mins
Marshon at Providence averaged 14.4pts / 4.3rebs / 1.5asts in 31.6 mins
The comparisons are eerily similar. You can counter that Nick only played 3 years compared to Marshon’s 4, but at the same time Marshon did not play much during his freshman year.
One other thing of note is that Nick’s game pretty much stayed consistent throughout his 3-year stint while Marshon seemed to take on an increased role with each year he played.

That's my concern also, the fact that he was such a ball hog
Not sure if that is him, or just the type of system he was playing in. I definitely would be interested in seeing a 3 guard rotation of Wall, Crawford, and Brooks.
by TheRealBigMike on May 26, 2011 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Very tough decision to make
Nick’s qualifying offer is not very high to begin with (about $3.7mil) , so if we did look to Brooks with the 18th pick as a possible replacement, savings wouldn be that significant (maybe a mil-mil and a half). Of course Nick would make an excellent bench scorer for a playoff bound team who may have money to burn so very hard to decide what direction to go in.
by TheRealBigMike on May 26, 2011 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions
def tender Nick
drafting Marshon or Klay Thompson etc gives the team insurance should Nick choose to cash in on his free agent status. “Momma said don’t leave nothin on the table”. Its not really the difference in rookie salary over the tender. Its the difference between rookie scale a 5-6M per year over 4-5 years.
Definitely right about that
And then there’s also the question of do we really want to start over with a new guy? Or just pay whatever is necessary to keep Nick in a Wiz jersey and try to reap the benefits of all of that time and effort spent on his development the past 3 years?

this entire franchise
is all about starting over with a new guy. Thats even more true if the new guy doesn’t need 3-4 years to learn how to accept coaching, get beyond his own numbers, learn how to draw fouls (NY still has not a clue in that regard) and play defense. I’m sold on adding a team player who can shoot/score if the opportunity arises.
problem with drafting nicks replacement...
it gives teams more incentive to make an offer to nick, because we have less incentive to tie up money in one position….if someone were to offer 1 mil more than what we would like, we would be more likely to match if there wasnt a replacement…
That's kind of a moot point
I only say that becuase if a team was going to make an offer, they are going to make an offer they dont think the Wiz will want to match. you dont play to get over, you play to win.

agreed
they have to make an offer we won’t match, not an offer thats a little more than we would care to pay. Ernie has sent all the right signals so far: we’ll match, we want him back, he’s part of our future. Just me, but I don’t see teams lining up to pay Nick 30-40M over 5yrs once the CBA is settled.
Agree
No way it’s 5 yrs/30-40M for NY, but I could see Chicago inquiring…

@NickSwagyPYoung
This should provide more than enough material to kill time til the draft.
Smells like a fake to me

Well, it seems that Williams is just a freak athletically.
Who knew? He plays like it; he just looks like a tank on defense.
Skins rule
I think there needs to be a Bulls-Thunder run off series
to see which team is better at squandering a lead at the end of a crucial game.

Durant and Rose won't forget being blocked in the last sec on that late 3.
both will be so motivated to offseason work. Scary.

No one will be more motivated than Boozer
I am sure he is going to get a lot of grief in Chicago.
