#6 + BOYD
I'm not sure if this is possible with our cap situation or with the lockout looming but there's a lot of talk about packaging #6 with guys like Blatche to move up in the draft. I think most of us would like to get in the top 3 like we were hoping for tonight. Is a more reasonable way to achieve this with the BOYD strategy?
Looking at the rosters of the 3 teams holding the top 4 picks, I've come up with the following targets.
Utah - Mehmet Okur 1 year remaining at 9.9 million
Cleveland - Daniel Gibson 2 years remaining at 4 million, Ramon Sessions 2 years remaining at 4 million. Sessions is clearly the better player but I think Cleveland would be willing to move either if they decide to draft Kyrie Irving. Baron Davis isn't going anywhere any time soon.
Minnesota - Martell Webster 2 years remaining at 4.8 million. The team I think is the most likely trade partner has the least to offer from a BOYD stand point. The reason I think Minny is likely to deal because neither Williams or Kanter will fit in seamlessly with Love at the 4. I think they'd prefer to get Irving or move down for some value.
My personal choice would definitely be Okur for a number of reasons. He's the only expiring deal, he could be a big capable of spreading the floor for Wall, and he could provide a Turkish teammate for a possible Turkish rookie taken with the new pick.
Any thoughts?

Brilliant
Let’s make it happen. Either Mehmet helps out or pulls a Bibby.
Logistics problems
A BOYD is an extremely unlikely prospect with the CBA as yet uncertain and our therefore having no idea as to how much absorption space we have. Keep in mind that Nick Young’s cap hold after we extend the QO is just under $8 million. We might not even have ANY cap space if some of those hardball propositions from the owners are to be taken seriously (Rashard, Blatche, Wall and Nick’s hold alone are over $40 million).
Bottom line, I don’t think it’s kosher until after the CBA is worked out. BOYD’ing upwards in particular looks dicey as Cleveland’s a bad contract buyer more than a seller, ‘Sota traded a pick for Webster last year and Okur is more money than even our best case scenarios would afford us (unless a Super-Houston rule allows us to sweep Shard away completely, but that wouldn’t be in the bag until the other side of the CBA anyway).
I don't see any of that happening.
Utah will most likely draft Kanter. Unless the Wiz and Toronto are going after the same player, I see no reason why the wiz take on the contract of a player they may not want and Minnesota wants a ready to start player. I think Toronto will draft Walker or Knight. Maybe if the wiz can talk Minny into McGee to be their starting 5 and then give them the 6 so Grunfeld can take Williams if he is that high on him or to draft Kanter ahead of Utah. But as I have posted, Valanciunas is not a bad boobie prize in all of this.He can eventually be that go to big man for Wall.
Top 3 is the wrong place to look
BOYD deals may be possible but not that high. Teams want players up there.
maybe Milwaukee? Absorb Drew Gooden or Corey Maguette?

One of us doesn't understand BOYD.
As I understand it you take a low value, high salaried player off someone’s hands and get compensated by also getting a prospect or a draft pick.
In your scenario you have teams trading away decent players (even part time starters) who have middling salaries (Okur is highish) that approximate their actual value. If any of those players you mention are traded I think the Jazz, Cavs, and Tpups are going to expect value back. I don’t think they are going to pay anyone to take those guys off their hands. The possible exception is Okur, who has an expiring contract anyway.
In addition if you are looking to include Blatche you’re talking about a team ADDING long term salary.
But he's only got one year left
Some (a lot?) of which they probably won’t have to pay due to the strike. Why would they give up anything of value to unload him?

Real BOYD possibilities
Now if we offer to take Baron Davis’s contract, then Cleveland may be ready to talk. And I’ll bet Orlando would be all ears if we offered to buy back Gilbert’s contract!
yeah, Gilbert would be great to backup and mentor Wall
and since Orlando traded their pick to the suns, lets just settle for a young prospect like Earl Clark instead.
On a serious note: Earl Clark could have been a lottery pick in this draft……
