Wizards beat the Charlotte Bobcats 97-91
Just a quick post-game thread to get something up so everyone can talk about the game. Two in a row folks.... Young Wiz are starting to come together.
I only saw the second half, but here are my impressions:
Jordan Crawford was very, very good. I was most impressed that he shot 50% from the field (40% from 3).
Andray Blatche follows up his 35 point 19 rebound effort with 25 points and 17 rebounds. Where has THIS Andray been all year?
John Wall turned the ball over too much (6) - but he was an absolute pest on defense getting 3 steals and he got his hands on many more balls.
JaVale McGee had 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks and only one goofy play. Has he turned the corner?
There should be some Keys awarded this week.

What were you thinking?

Now…can we all get along in this thread and accept the fact that we have a great potential backcourt. We have a glass 2/3 full. Let’s stop talking about the 1/3 empty.
Enjoy the winning streak folks!!!

I love it!!!
Starting with the trade of our #5 pick for Miller & Foye, we have been getting HOSED in these transactions!!! Thank you Atlanta!!!!
*we are building for the FUTURE*
Leave me alone. The game is on...
Starting with?
What bad trades came after that one?
it was a good move for atlanta
Kirk was an upgrade over Mike and they thought that if things play right, the Hawks would get their third straight trip to the 2nd round and perhaps sneak to the conference finals.
They didn’t wanna lose Crawford, but it wasn’t like he was gonna find much pt there.

I like what I've been seeing the last two games
but we’ve played the Cavs and a depleted Bobcats team. Hopefully Andray can show it’s him and not just the level of competition.
Javale played great but he did have ONE goofy play… where he went like a 7 foot PG and almost gave a nice dime on the break. He’s really been great recently though.

Was that in the first half?

Yeah. Nitpicking, but just to be accurate he did have one bonehead play.
Plus a couple of really bad shots. But a very good game overall.

JaVale McGee had..... ZERO goofy plays.
lol I’ll give you a pass because you missed the 1st half. But, to his credit, he only had 1.

I missed the game
Why does he have to go cost to cost in nearly every game? (to his “credit” he did draw a foul in the previous one, but still).
It’s hilarious.

Hawks lost tonight
now tied with Mem and NO, with Portland one up and Houston 1 down.
Here is their schedule:

There is an outside chance all 4 could pass Atl…and we would wind up with the 15th pick…
wow…
18th
Houston is three games back of the Hawks. If all 8 Western Conference seeds finish with records better than the Hawks, then the Hawks (5th in the East) will pick 13th of the 16th playoff teams which would be the 18th pick in the draft.
When we play ATL what's the best scenario, draft-wise..
losing to help our 1st pick lottery chances… or winning and lowering our pick we get from them
It is going to depend on Toronto
I say win regardless…I would love ending the season on a run…
You could argue the higher pick is more important, but I don’t believe in the tank strategy, especially with the lottery…
agree
i Think that we should try to win, think about it, if we wouldn’t have won the last game of the season last year than we wouldn’t have gotten john! I say try to win and good things will happen

"Where has THIS Andray been all year?"
There’s no question Dray is playing like a man whose job is on the line. But I don’t think the past two games are a good barometer of his performance until we go up against a team with an actual front line.
I agree...I wouldn't be surprised if he had a monster game against the Pistons.
TNT should've treated Lebron's return to Cleveland game like 2k11 and cut the game off after the Cavs were down by 30. lol

I guess he could guard players like Durant and Anthony
He could be a very tall scoring play maker. I mean, if he can get in to the paint and score points, he could be a very nice player at the 3.

Perry Jones wouldn’t be bad, if he plays next to Booker (one has speed/strength, the other hoots/scores). That said, I really wouldn’t mind drafting and stashing one or two of the Euros, either. Next season looks to be kind of a throwaway season, anyway.
by Tbonebullets on Apr 3, 2011 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Valanciunas is the one they would stash although I doubt it
I some how think this team doesn’t really stash players if they can develop them. Even though a player like Valanciunas has said he would put 2 more years in to Europe, I think they like their in house way to develop players. I don’t think they will use their 1st pick to stash a player. Maybe their 2nd round pick.

Doesn't seem to have the requisite mental attributes to ever fulfill his potential
Maybe Wall can bring it out from him, and it is essentially unfair for me to judge Jones’ character without even having ever met the guy. But that being said, considering that he has all the tools to consistently dominate at the collegiate level, he has been so listless at times and has generally underwhelmed. I don’t see how or why he’ll just suddenly “turn it on” in the NBA.

Dray is the real deal
His problem is he missed the whole offseason with a broken foot so he came back rusty & out of shape. Then because of him being rusty & out of shape, he kept getting injuries all year. He was playing hurt and crappy. Before the last time he got hurt, he had 3 straight 20pt games for the first time all year because he was finally getting healthy & in shape. Then in the next game he had 3reb’s & 2ast very early in the 1st until he sprained his shoulder. He missed like 2 weeks, came back against the Heat and had 14 & 8 in that game and then these last 2 games where he next 2.
He’s just finally healthy but he’s still nowhere near basketball shape.I predicted that he would be a beast this year and McGee next year. Because of the injuries he wasnt but you can see how good he is and if he’s healthy next year then he will be very good while McGee is finally getting it towards the end of this year. He looks much better on Offense now and he will look alot better next year. They will be a dangerous frontcourt and they have a good young 3 headed backcourt with Wall, NY, and Crawford. I could see this team jumping to the playoffs next year

With all due respect, I'm sick and tired of the apologies for Blatche's lack of conditioning
He’s a professional athlete. He’s getting paid millions of dollars to work on his body and play basketball to the best of his capacities. Being out of shape significantly limits that ability.
So he had a broken foot, couldn’t run. Sounds to me like the perfect opportunity to hit the weight room and concentrate on toning his upper body. All that time not practicing should have allowed him ample opportunity to learn how to condition himself properly (after all, we do have the league’s best strength and conditioning coach, apparently). Surely he could have spent that time learning how to eat right. That he didn’t is all the more inexcusable considering that he had the option of accepting the services of a personal cook.
I hope that Blatche has turned the corner, and I hope that he maintains the same effort over our last 6 games. Ultimately, the greatest barometer to gauge Blatche’s commitment will be in seeing what type of shape he shows up in heading into camp next season.
by Max Zamphirescu on Apr 3, 2011 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
I think he should have been in better shape too
but I don’t think that he was allowed to work on his upper body. I’m no doctor, but I heard that when you have a serious leg injury, that you’re not supposed to lift weights because that’ll just put more weight and stress on the foot, which will make it worse.
by iNFaMOUS SwaGG on Apr 3, 2011 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I can't imagine that any time a player gets injured
he’s not allowed to workout. Frankly, I can’t fathom any excuse that would limit a player’s time doing the bench press because of a broken foot. And if it’s really that much of a concern, put him in a freakin wheelchair
Unrelated, but Stephen Strasburg is in the best shape of his life coming off Tommy John surgery. Now there’s an athlete who’s committed to being the best possible player, working when he’s not even necessarily required to do so
by Max Zamphirescu on Apr 3, 2011 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions
you're not supposed to
bulk up. The big thing is, he couldnt do cardio and therefore he couldn’t play properly. A broken foot on a big man is pretty much a death sentence for that season
by Meraj Chowdhury on Apr 3, 2011 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions
If he had ever exhibited a commitment to conditioning, I would be more tempted to agree
But he hasn’t, plain and simple. If this year was an anomaly, I could understand the rationalization for his build and lack of stamina. But it’s not.
And I can’t imagine any team doctor prohibiting Blatche from toning his arms, for example, because of a broken foot. Or not permitting him to eat more healthfully.
And to add to all of this, he had more than 40 games to get into tip-top shape, and he didn’t do it.
by Max Zamphirescu on Apr 3, 2011 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions
well he got more injured too
remember he hurt his leg once or twice more and then his shoulder…etc etc
Also, last off season didnt he get injured because he was putting in extra work. He did earn the moniker 7daydray from putting in mad work 2 years ago & earning time…
by Meraj Chowdhury on Apr 3, 2011 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions
earn? lol he self annointed himself that nickname
by les boulez bomber on Apr 4, 2011 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions
Greg Oden is the perfect example for this.
He worked out a ton after a serious leg injury, got too bulky, and his leg (which had gotten weaker because it was in a cast) couldn’t support the increased mass. Andray hasn’t been a starter long enough to say if this season was an anomaly, but it’s pretty obvious that he was hurt most of the season. He rushed back way too soon, and Flip played him way more minutes than he should have, but that doesnt mean that he can’t be a productive player going forward.
You’re saying it’s “obvious that he was hurt most of the season”. Why is it obvious? Because he stunk all season? Isn’t that a circular argument?
I’m not a member of the “trade Blatche” crowd, but I"m tired of hearing about his “injuries” that sabotaged his season. He broke his foot NINE MONTHS ago. Jennings missed 19 games with a broken foot. Obviously there are a thousand things that ‘broken foot’ can indicate, but nine months?
When you are not one of the apologists, the long list of excuses that people make are really obvious.
by MR on Apr 4, 2011 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions
MR bringing the HEAT! A few thing
A) You, not me, said that he stunk all season. Which is not what I am arguing. His numbers were down and he was visibly less mobile than he has been his entire career.
B) Neither of those arguments is circular. However, if I were to say “Blatche sucks at basketball because he’s a terrible basketball player.” That would be a circular argument
C)I’d appreciate it if you’d use this forum to discuss basketball, and not attack my (and other members reasoning) You have no more reason to believe that Andray is a bad basketball than I do to believe that he’s hurt. Saying that I’m wrong because I’m an apologist is as invalid an argument as saying that Blatche is bad, because he’s bad.
D) Jennings has been playing pretty poorly since the injury.
A) He has stunk all season. Saying he’s “less mobile” is just a nice way of saying he isn’t working hard.
B) I don’t know how injured Blatche has been all season. They haven’t been holding him out of games (until the shoulder injury) so I have no reason to think the foot has been a problem. However if you are saying that he has been injured and the proof is his poor play then I would call that argument circular. (“Blatche is playing poorly because he’s injured”….“How do you know he’s injured”…“Because he’s playing poorly”)
C) I’m discussing basketball. If I believe you are making a poor judgment then I will argue against it. Nothing personal.
I was referring actually to all apologists, not just Blatche apologists. The NY apologists, Arenas apologists etc. are just as guilty of wearing rose colored glasses. When you don’t have those glasses on the arguments do seem sort of silly.
I don’t think Blatche is bad at basketball. In fact just today I was fantasizing about how great he could be. I believe he could have been a hall of fame caliber player with the right attitude. I just think he’s playing lazy this year. It took the spark of guys like Jeffers and Crawford to get him going again, at least for a game or two. I agree he can be a productive player moving forward, however I’d say the odds of that seem longer now than they did a year ago. He has a low internal motor. He requires external motivation. Hopefully he’ll get enough of that if the Wizards maintain their current “high energy” style.
D) I don’t watch Jennings regularly, but his numbers say he’s playing well.
by MR on Apr 4, 2011 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
We all are kind of Wall apologists
given the fact that he’s not shooting all that well, and that we’re rationalizing the reasons for him tangoing with Zydrunas. But he has the competitive fire that I don’t see as much of in many of of our other rotation players, and for rookies, the competitive fire is essential to a future great career.
You guys better be careful...
I got a popup warning on this board for calling someone an apologist. In reality, an apologist is just a defender, which demonstrates that whoever plays “bad cop” around here has a shaky grasp of the language.
Blatche has actually been better since about the beginning of February
His minutes were cut down, so it wasn’t that noticeable, but he’s been significantly better since the beginning of February, and seems even better now. That’s some reasonable evidence to support the recovery from injury argument (or the out of shape argument). When you hurt your leg or foot it takes time to get confidence in it again, and it’s very possible he’s lost strength and flexibility in that foot. He certainly looks like he’s lost some lift — he can barely get off the floor now, which I didn’t think was the case in the past. We don’t know exactly why Blatche struggled so much for the first 3 months of the season, but he has gotten better, which suggests we can hope for him to be better next year.
Comparing one broken foot to another is too silly to mention. The potential for different types and degrees of breaks in the foot is nearly infinite. A broken foot could be a career ending injury, something you could play through, and everything in between.

As a personal trainer
I have to say, “toning your arms” sounds like a huge waste of time for someone like dray. Biceps are next to useless in basketball.
There’s this huge misconception that biceps are important in sports lol. They are in a few, most notably wrestling and football.
But the most important in basketball? Your core, first and foremost, so the transfer of power when you jump, change direction, stop and go, can be fast and abrupt but controlled. Legs, shoulders and chest for power downlow in the post.
Dray might as well play videogames if he’s going to “tone his arms”. This isn’t a beauty contest, why would he spend time on his arms?
And also, I wouldn’t reccomend bench pressing with an injured foot. Ever.
Ever.

I think it would be much better to bench press every other day
than to sit on the couch, eating potato chips and watching soap operas…..
And although I completely agree that bicep and arm work in general probably wouldn’t help much for a basketball player – I see absolutely NO correlation between upper body weight training (Lat pull, bench press, shoulder work) and having a broken foot…. Taking off fat, and increasing muscle should have ZERO effect on one’s foot.
The trick is to maintain proper weight – eat right so that fat is burned and muscle is built in it’s place -
I could see a definite negative effect on a broken foot if someone were to GAIN weight… but proper weight training is not always about weight gain, but building and toning muscle. That can be accomplished WITHOUT gaining weight.
He's "delightfully cranky"
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
You'd be surprised how much you use your feet during upper body training.
The next time you’re laying flat on your back doing a bench press, just make a mental note of what your feet are doing.
I was a weight lifter for
10 years….. Doing a bench press (the RIGHT way) involves your feet not at all…
If you are using your feet, you’re definitely doing something wrong…
He's "delightfully cranky"
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
Doing a bench press the right way doesn’t mean your feet are completely immobilized and isolated from the application or reduction of pressure; nor does it obviate the risk of aggravation or re-injury.
Doing a bench press the right way also shouldn’t involve your hips or things. Until you’re trying to get that last rep up…
I agree with lat pull and shoulder work
That’s totally ok.
But the bench press targets a major muscle group, and the rule of thumb when someone is injured is, plain and simple, absolutely no major lifts.
i.e. Bench Press, Squat, Deadlift, Cleans, etc. Doesn’t matter what’s hurt, they’re off limits.
To clarify about benching with an injured foot, you just can’t rely on a person to not strain any part of the body when doing a major lift like that. It’s a safety precaution that all trainers take. Doctors enforce it as well.
He could do extremely light wieght, but toning is sort of a waste of time, because you aren’t actually building any muscle, just definition.
So yea, some flab would go away, but dray wouldn’t be any stronger or better conditioned.
He’d just look….uh….not out of shape. Dray needs to do tons of conditioning this off season.

He's only the real deal
against teams like Golden State, Charlotte, Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota, and Phoenix. His ‘big games versus good teams’ are few and far between.
Really, really great to see. I have to say, I didn’t see the team coming together in the way it seems they have, near the end of the season. I guess a lot of it has to do with being patient with young players; also, Crawford…wow. Is anyone calling for EG and Flip to go now? I think they are proving themselves, too!
Yes, being patient with the young players is important
….which implies that they get to play. But if it were up to Flip, he’d have all veterans out there, even if they were mediocre. The injuries and trades and lack of any quality didn’t leave him with much choice.
On EG, he’s been here a long time and hasn’t produced much of anything other than excuses. The team is 20 and out this year and made the world’s worst sports franchise last year.
As of yesterday, Rook was predicting 30 wins next year. This is not stellar performance.
Sure, put me down for a fresh start with management as well as the players.
but they did the exact same thing last season. maybe they r just smart n play hard to close out the year hoping no competition for their spot is acquired. i mean…u really have to realize that if u dont win 20 games all year, u better play hard those last few games…am hopeful though =)

On Blatche
“I came out with a lot of effort,” Blatche said. “I wanted my teammates to follow off my energy.”
I think this has been one of the foremost issues with our team this year, that Blatche has been the alpha-dog in our ridiculously young lineup. Kirk Hinrich hadn’t been around long enough to be the true leader, and he’s Kirk freakin Hinrich. Who’s gonna listen to Hilton Armstrong? Gilbert Arenas was being pushed out the door, Howard hasn’t seen court time, Lewis hasn’t been around much at all. Wall has already said that being a rookie has been a detriment in sanctioning the lockerroom leadership that we will ultimately need from him.
And up until this point in the season, Blatche’s heart and effort has been grossly inconsistent. If the team has been following Blatche’s lead in influencing energy levels and commitment to such an extent, then we may have been even more leadership-deprived than previously recognized.
It seems like his recent time off the court has been the best possible thing for this franchise. It has allowed McGee to come into his own from underneath the shadow of Blatche; it has allowed Wall and someone like Mo Evans to step up in the much-needed leadership role; it has allowed a player like Crawford to be “the guy” and take more shots and gain confidence that will carry him through the offseason. And though it’s a ridiculously small sample size, it seems to have re-energized Blatche himself, who suddenly doesn’t have his playing time guaranteed, who isn’t necessarily the first or second or even third scoring option, who now has to prove himself just to ensure that he has a starting position NEXT year.
And it seems like the infectious energy of the team (helped by a player like Othyus) has even rubbed off on him, instead of having the diametrically opposite effect on the team as he had earlier in the year.
If Blatche can maintain this energy level, hustle, effort and commitment for the last 6 games, and he retains this same dedication via an offseason workout plan that gets his ass into the best shape of his career, then I would say that he very well may be a long-term piece afterall. Because it’s not his talent levels that are holding him back, just his own drive to be the best player that he can be

I like the fact that "he came out with a lot of energy"
but I don’t agree that the teammates should follow off his energy. It should be “I am following the energy level and hustle plays of my teammates, especially the young ones”.
well…ive been pretty hard on him so have to cheer when he at least says the right things! i think he needs more than a strong close and offseason though. he has to do it game in game out every year for us to be true contenders. next year is a good time to start

A little competition is good for anyone and especially Blatche. Having 3 good bigs with legitimate size is a good thing. Worst case scenario: we’ll have a piece to trade.

We need to keep at least three good bigs with size
Bigs can’t play as many minutes as smaller guys, so the backups get extra minutes and are extra important.
Bigs also tend to get injured more often because it’s more crowded in the middle. More feet to step on, so more twisted ankles. More bodies flying around, so more banged knees, etc. We need backups that can step into a starting role, matchup with other teams’ starters, and keep the ship afloat while the starters recuperate.
I am wondering if the team will pick up Yis option
5.4 mil is a lot for him, on the other hand they may have that 5.4 mil to spend on Yi for next season. If Yi walks and Blatche is injured, that leaves McGee and Hamady as the only 7’0 type players. So the team will be forced to use Hamady on the tall shooters. I see a case for keeping Yi another season.

Unless Enes gets drafted and outplays Yi in summer league
picking up Jianlian’s qualifying offer isn’t as bad as having Eddy Curry.
Speaking about Curry, he may actually be in Miami of all places…. What the hell!?
I think losing to Cleveland
whose motto should be “A team even the Wizards can’t lose to” shook Miami up and now they are desperate. I wonder which designated player will push Currys wheel chair around the court.
