Around SBN: Tottenham May Have Found Their Goalkeeper Of The Future

The Hawks scored the first 11 points of the game and led 19-4 before John Wall decided to send a charge into his team by scoring eight consecutive points for the team. But his frustration was apparent early on, as he looked at Coach Flip Saunders and shouted about one the Wizards’ starters, "Get him out of the game!"

Crawford, Blatche or McGee

It’s not good when you can look at three starters and make a good case for each one being yanked. If you add Lewis, you’re looking at another guy who probably can’t start for a good team at this stage of his career.

by Bassanova on Dec 29, 2011 9:20 AM EST reply actions

I'd say Crawford

Blatche was attempting to get in the post, but Crawford was invisible all night until he started launching 30ft bricks about 2 seconds into the shot clock.

totally agree

its his job to affirmatively state who’s going to be the number 1 option…it just seems like he’s letting the team go its own way, but we’re far too young and immature of a team to do that…he needs to instill some discipline and make it clear what roles everybody has

As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.

It was McGee

in the first half when mcgee got the ball near the 3 point line and started trying to take it to the hoop. He almost turned it over and it went out of bounds but we retained possession and wall turned around to Flip and yelled at him to take McGee out for dribbling, which flip did not do.

by jeffco01 on Dec 29, 2011 9:50 AM EST reply actions

what's disheartening to me is that, so far, Wall is not making his teamates any better

part of the assumption of our future success is based on the notion that players, mcgee specifically, will appear much better when on the floor with a top shelf PG….right now it’s 5 guys playing randomly

How can you make your teammates better when they can't shoot?

Wall is getting too much blame for his teammates failures.

More drama

I wonder if all the bad vibes on two losses is good because it shows passion or bad because it means a further meltdown is coming?

Also, isn’t it weird that Nick Young is the only guy who seems happy and effective? Maybe that training camp was a real bad scene.

It just amazes me

how dysfunctional this team is. I think this is honestly one of the most dysfunctional teams that I’ve ever seen. This is just awful how they are handling things. The wheels are definitely coming off. You have some guys that are tired of losing and now we’re getting to the point that fingers are starting to be pointed. Flip needs to get control of this team otherwise we could be in for a dreadful season.

by ThePGPhenomenon on Dec 29, 2011 9:55 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

i'm not sure Wall needs to be telling Flip to take players from the game.

Who is the Coach? Flip is half doormat, half disciplinarian, and likely total sham in many players eyes. He’s got to turn it around now or he has to go

i was thinking that last night as well

turiaff seems like a better fit for the 4 spot with us (hustle and low post presence that we lack), and singleton needs to be starting because of his defense and energy…i think between young, wall and mcgee we have enough offense on the court, but we need those hard nose players like singleton and turiaff to complement them

As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*

by atark001 on Dec 29, 2011 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

I still think we will be lacking offense with that crew

Because Wall hasn’t shown me anything in a half court set and im still cautious about McGee getting becoming a legit option on O. Young is our best offensive weapon. Ideally we would have a 4 that could score instead of an overweight, lazy, Blatche. Unfortunately this lineup is the best we can do right now.

by jeffco01 on Dec 29, 2011 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

It's the best lineup we've got and could be pretty effective defensively

Dray is dunzo, no need to care anymore if he’s going to eventually be something else….so might as well get Mcgee more looks and see exactly what he’s got

by DCrez on Dec 29, 2011 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

P&R Wall with Turiaf while Nick moves off the ball, McGee creates space by lingering along the baseline and Singlton tries to get open behind the arc

Wall can use the pick and pop or role with turiaf.

To mix it up, feed both McGee and Singleton in the post and give Nick a pick and roll after he gets open off a curl.

For the rest: defense, defense, defense and rebound, rebound, rebound to try to get Wall out in the open floor.

Keep it simple for these guys and let them get some confidence

Worst bench in the league!

But I agree.

We’re basically stuck with this comparably-talentless team for the season, so at this point, we should just be aiming to reward effort, toughness, teamwork, defense, smart play for our guys, positive reinforcement that will hopefully nurture and encourage these traits.

by Max Zamphirescu on Dec 29, 2011 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

agree

i think with our current starting five we have too many people who think they’re the number one option, which hurts us offensively, because we get no ball movement and never work the offensive sets….we need to pair down the egos on the court, start a unit that works well together, instead of a unit that can all score individually….if we simplify it and define the roles of each starter i think the team will play better, more cohesive ball

As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.

by atark001 on Dec 29, 2011 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed!

And BTW, the sky is not falling. With a rebuilding team, the lockout absolutely hindered our chemistry and development. The first 10-15 games are basically practice/extended training camp. A normal training camp and preseason is a necessity for a young team. Unfortunately, we have to see these bad habits and “feeling out” each other during this modified regular season. Anyone having aspirations of winning basketball this early is kooky. We will not win a game until the 10-15th game of the season. From there, we will begin to see our future and later on, a top 5 pick.

by WizKid27 on Dec 29, 2011 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

the thing about that line up is the scoring pecking order would be pretty set....

and then you hope Crawford or Blanche are sparks off the bench on off nights for ny and McGee….

the problem is blatches ego is so fragile that I think you lose him…..not ready to do that yet this year (only because we need him to have value for a deadline trade, I called his need to go early last year…I maintain that view)

Burger Boy Blatche

If Ernie Grunfeld feels like working in the NBA ever again, he better do something with this roster and fast!

I propose a new starting 5 which consists of: Wall, Young, Singleton, Lewis and McGee. Blatche is the worst player to ever play for any DC team ever. It is such a shame that our franchise is being represented by him. He is the absolute worst.

I feel Lewis is still a serviceable player for us

He created some easy shots for himself in the post last night and drained couple open threes when Wall kicked it out to him.
In the first game he was also the only one visible player in the third quarter getting to the free throw line often. Certainly not the player he once was like McGrady but still able to contribute

Don’t think it’s Crawford because Wall and Crawford are close off the court. Seems to me

that we are seeing a clash in not just playing styles between the younger/older guys on the team, but a clash of will. Guys like Wall and Singleton don’t like to lose, while Blatche McGee and Young have learned to take it in stride.

Problem is

when you’re on a bad team you can’t let losses linger. You’re going to be in for a long season of losing, so in a sense you have to shake those off and focus on the next game. Blatche and Young seem to lose focus in the middle of games, though.

it's way early yet, but he looks overmatched by nba athletes

He’s missing 5ft FGAs all over the place because he’s not getting above the rim. He does have a great motor though, and any big with a motor will have some success i think

by DCrez on Dec 29, 2011 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

What you saw - what I saw

What you saw was Kanter missing 5 or 6 shots right at the rim…

What I saw was Kanter getting DEEP position in the post… catching tough passes….to GET shots right at the rim – against supposedly pretty good post defenders.

What you saw was Kanter not running fast up and down the court.

What I saw was Kanter muscling Gasol completely out of the paint on defensive rebounds.

Right now, if I were Utah, I wouldn’t be too concerned about Kanter missing shots inside – he’ll make the adjustments necessary – and it won’t take long because he’s got a great basketball IQ…. What I’d be very happy about is the fact that when he comes in, things start to happen. I’d also be feeling a bit better about his defensive capabilities. Although Gasol schooled the Rookie on a couple plays, he did pretty well defensively against McRoberts and in limited minutes against Denver’s Chris Andersen.

I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.

by Rook6980 on Dec 30, 2011 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

I didn't see much of Kanter aside from some analysis,

but from what i saw, he knows his place on the floor, he’s gonna stay there, and he’s gonna compete. I agree that the rest will come… We have to remember that none of these rookies got a real training camp or offseason, and Kanter hasn’t played meaningful basketball in a few years.

Now here’s the million dollar question. Would you trade Vesely, Singleton, Mack, and next year’s first for him right now? I’m still leaning towards no, but on the flip side, its all but impossible to get a big man like that. they don’t come here in FA, nobody trades them, and they don’t make it past the top 3 of the draft…

by jones-y on Dec 30, 2011 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

the troubling thing is he doesnt look like the guy at the combine

he looks like the guy whose athleticism was a big question before the combine…..you know, before he trained and dieted 6 straight weeks with Grover on doing combine drills specifically and then looked great. Now he looks like he has trouble getting above the rim. He has a great motor and if it comes with a nose for the ball at the very least he’ll be a rebound machine….but visions of this kid as “the next great Big” were premature imho.

but so is judging him after 2 games, so there you have it!

by DCrez on Dec 30, 2011 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Well that's a direct result of people putting too much emphasis on the combine.

I’m not worried one bit about that stuff. And just like there’s room in the NBA for athletic pogo stick bigs, there’s room for mack truck bigs too.

They called him a throwback. I love it… He’s the guy who’s not gonna give up position on post-ups. He’s the guy who’s gonna push the entire opposing frontcourt out of the way and allow his teammate to get the rebound. He’s the guy who’s gonna be able to set up shop three feet from the rim and be immovable until the entry pass makes its way in. He’s the guy who’s gonna get opposing frontcourts in foul trouble single-handedly. He’s the guy who’s gonna knock someone on their ass with a monster pick three times a game. And when he adds his jumper to the mix, geez…

Not saying he’s the next coming, but he’s the kind of guy any team would welcome into their frontcourt, no matter how they play or who they already have.

by jones-y on Dec 30, 2011 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

so i guess you havent seen him at all yet huh?

he doesnt look like a big bruiser, was not pushing Pau around. He looks like a rookie who doesnt have his bearings and is searching for a part of his game to rely on. Look on the bright side

Now that our hopes of “building around Wall & McGee” are getting thoroughly squashed, we can turn our fantasies to landing Howard and D Williams.

The Wiz are make a great case for assemblying the next version of Superfriends. Miami and New York were able to land their stars, but ended up with too little beyond their few stars. The Wiz, however, have a ton of cheap rotation players locked into rookie contracts. And Wall & McGee might have just enough name recognition to be useful in prying away Howard and D Will (that or we recognize the Wall & McGee can be the most explosive 2nd unit in the NBA)

Too much drama

And this isn’t good for Wall, at all. I’m actually glad all of this is happening so soon into the season, because Ernie has to see all of this, and we have to assume the man isn’t STUPID, I mean….he isn’t…..right?

I think he’ll make the right moves (any that he can), and do what NEEDS to be done, as hard as it may seem: Look at the players who can be part of a championship, keep them, and move everyone else….

Also, looking forward to Jan’s debut, whenever that may be. Liked what I saw from the preseason game he played in. Kid looks comfortable out there. Would anyone else be against a starting 5 of:

John Wall
Nick Young
Jan Veseley
Chris Singleton
JaVale McGee

?….I think it would work pretty well. Especially on defense, with chris and Jan really boosting the problems we’ve been having on the perimeter.

That team would be SERIOUSLY outrebounded

Not that the current starters are doing much better of course. But you point to the main criticism I have had with Ernie Grunfeld for years. The man is seemingly allergic to drafting inside bangers. The reason we might even consider starting a lineup like this is because Ernie has failed for years to draft, trade or acquire quality rebounders. This team has plenty of needs – obviously – before it can become competitive but the #1 need is interior defense. As long as Ernie is the GM, I don’t have much confidence that this need will be addressed.

No surprise here.

This group lost the first 20+ games on the road last year. Same people same results. Why should we expect anything different?
FYI——-This team wasn’t very good last year.
Same players and guess what --they ain’t good this year.
Go figger.

this is the solution for this team

With all the cap space that we have, I think it would be in our best interest to package, Blatche, Crawford, Booker and Ndyae to Memphis for a second round pick and rudy gay.

(right now Gay is coming off the bench and is being paid handsomely)

In the off-season we should court the likes of Bynum, and Eric Gordon

(if young decided to bolt because his friends wont be here anymore)

Most likely we will have a top 5 pick and I would perhaps go with Jared Sullinger and reshape the entire team

Wall,Gordon,Singleton,Sullinger,Bynum…now that team can make OKC like leaps and go from 15 wins to 50 wins.

But hey im not the GM and my job definitely isnt on the line

Seems extremely unlikely

I’d be shocked if we picked up either Bynum or Eric Gordon, much less both. The Lakers and Hornets will work out trades before letting these players go for nothing. And even if they didn’t, why would Bynum and Gordon want to come to a perennial losing team? Bynum especially has experienced big-time success. He’s not going to want to play for one of the NBA’s doormats.

Play with Wall

He’s viewed as the next Rose – just need a few very good players to put around him and the team can contend.

Getting buckets since 2003.

How the hell does Jordan Crawford get the starting nod over Nick Young?

Nick must be getting penalized for something. I know JC was anxious to stick the old team, but he needs to have a conscience. They don’t even have to guard him when he’s taking shots like that.

I disagree with one part of the post above: they play with plenty of heart. If it was the Wizard(s) of Oz, this team would be the scarecrow.

Those moves are nice, but EG will never do it

I think this is our core that we have to keep:

Wall, McGee, Singleton, Vesely, Booker

Get rid of Blatche. Keep a few vets. We definitely need people that can score to compliment Wall (Harrison Barnes, Austin Rivers anyone?). Cannot run the point without scorers. Even Magic Johnson would fail running the point on this team.

i know about irving, but he did complete another semester in college to wait out the lockout, and

Bulls swingman luol deng was also a one and done in college. but most of the early entries have still managed to graduate, within six years which keeps duke’s APR rating sky high for a perennial top 10 team. North Carolina is also similar in this regard.

by thewiz06 on Dec 29, 2011 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

Well here's the thing about Duke,

They’re competitive with respect to landing the top prospects, but where they really make their money is with the Nolan Smiths, Chris Duhons, Dahntay Joneses of the world. The borderline NBA talent, four-year guys from whom Coach K coaxes 150% of their potential. In addition, they land the top tier recruits who actually wanna graduate college. The Jay Williams and Grant Hill types. So they’re not like a Calipari team where the roster flips every season or two.

If this is true (and theres no reason not to believe it)

Then i actually feel bad for Flip…what a tough position. You CANT give into what even Wall says immediately, you will lose the respect of your team if u give in to your star player like that. But at the same time, you cant let the guy busting his tail, play with lazy-bums like that. It’ll be interesting to see the lineup on Friday. Thats where u can make the adjustment

Wall nees to calm down and Flip needs to get a clue about what to do

the starters have been terrible together. Lewis ever since he’s been a member of the Wizards has never played in the flow with the guys. Its not rocket science what needs to happen.

They need to pull Lewis for Singleton. And NY for Crawford. That the 1st change of starters that needs to happen.

The Mcgee/Blatche frontline is horrid quite simply because Blatche won’t defend. Mcgee always feels like he has to be in the middle always regardless of where his man is to contest shots because Blatche will just not cover his back will not take a charge or attempt to block a shot or rotate back.

Unless he gives more effort Blatche needs to get benched. I don’t even see a valauble role for him off the bench unless he commits to defending.

Wall has gotta relax and show more patience on the floor and with the team. His body language is becoming very troubling. He needs to ramp up his defensive effort things not related to scoring to get guys to follow him. He seems frustarted by the guys not following him. 1st he has to show them that he’s willing to do whatever it takes by playing defense, diving for a loose ball.

His response to his frustration can’t be pouting, screaming for the coach to replace guys or driving wreckless to the hoop .

Wall is still very immature. He needs a very strong coach to teach him about leadership. You can’t just claim the mantle of leadership by deflecting things. You gotta do it accepting things taking blame when its not his fault say its up to me to do a better job getting the guys shots take the hit.

He’ll learn in time.

What do you mean

by Lewis has never played in the flow with the guys?
You want him to become another chucker on the floor?

by isum on Dec 29, 2011 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

we absolutely need to start young and singleton. unfortunately though i think we still need to start blatche. hes acted stupidly before and had terrible games before but he still provides offense from the four and will have some trade value at the deadline if we sweep this under the rug and give him minutes.
although if we’re gonna lose anyway we might as well start vesley and let wall rack up stats, golden state style
