Wizards: Inside the Numbers of Game #1

The Wizards take the court tonight against the Atlanta Hawks, as they try to bounce back from a 90-84 defeat vs the Nets. Lets take a look at the numbers of the first game:

Field Goal Percentage: 41.9%(31-74)

Three Point Field Goal Percentage: 12.5%(1-8)

Free Throw Percentage: 61.8%(21-34)

Offensive Rebounds: 8

Assists: 13

Turnovers: 12

Fastbreak Points: 12

The Bad

Looking at these numbers, its clear the Wizards have a ton of work to do at the offensive end. They shot poorly which is bad, but whats worse is the fact that they shot poorly and did not clean up their mess. The Wizards missed 43 shots and only rebounded 19%(8) of those misses. They also shot poorly from the line. 13 misses in a game that was decided by 6 points. In addition, the Wizards were ineffective in their ball movement with only 13 assists on 31 made baskets. A team with a competent offense should have at least 20 assists a game.

The Good

The Wizards did not chuck up a lot of three point shots. That's good considering they only have one true three point shooter, in Roger Mason who is not even a regular rotation player. The Wizards did a good job of attacking in the paint in the first quarter. They got to the line 34 times, which is excellent. They need to be aggressive like that every night. Although they had some turnovers late, overall they were pretty solid with the ball. They also were solid on the break, which is expected.

Field Goal Percentage: 39.5%(34-86)

Three Point Field Goal Percentage: 23.1%(6-26)

Offensive Rebounds Allowed: 18

Turnovers Forced: 16

Blocks: 7

Fastbreak Points Allowed: 2

The Bad

The Wizards gave up 53 points in the second half and did not get the crucial stops. They also allowed the Nets to smoke them on the offensive glass.

The Good

The Wizards did a great job defending the three point line and forced the Nets into a lot of tough long range shots. They forced a lot of turnovers and use their length to block some shots. They only gave up 37 points in the 1st half and really did a good job of denying the Nets any type of cohesion. A solid effort overall.

Lets hope the Wiz Kids can improve offensively and give the same defensive effort they gave in the 1st half tonight.
