I'm actually encouraged by the opener
Everyone on this blog seems extremely down on the zards. They got blown out of their first preseason game and then blew a 21 point lead to the nets, who promptly lost their next game by like 30. This has encouraged me to post for my first time and say that, personally, I found the nets game encouraging. They only lost by a few points to a team with a superstar point guard despite wall playing terribly, nick young only playing 18 minutes, and the team getting demolished on the glass. I'm not ruling out the wizards yet and think there's a possibility they make the playoffs.
In the first quarter and a half they showed what this current roster is capable of. They were playing scrappy, intense defense and getting out on the break. All five players were passing the ball on offense, and while their execution wasn't crisp, they were getting some good looks. Why can't they do this on a nightly basis? Their players are just as talented as some other eastern playoff teams, and while it's true that they are generally incredibly stupid, there is no reason they can't compensate for that with effort.
They are going to hit more threes and make more free throws than on monday and wall is going to play better. From there it's up to flip and the players if they want to fight every night or if they just want to play. If they decide to fight they will surprise people--and by people i mean everyone. John Wall is an incredible player and has already succeeded Kwame Brown (despite what some people have said). Remember this is the same player who had a triple double in his 6th game and proved himself to be incredibly competitive and fiery. If he lets the team be irrelevant again I will be surprised. Also he has to pass the ball more because he's currently a much better creator than he is scorer.
Basically what I'm trying to say is: we're the diehard fans of this team, we're the ones who are supposed to irrationally support them each season, at least until they get out of the playoff hunt. This league is so unpredictable that flip and wall can't sit back and wait for draft picks, they have to try and be good now.

This team will NOT make the playoffs this season
Not enough talent, shooting, or hustle on a nightly basis.
I was discouraged by the opener, but from different reasons than others. I know the team lacks talent and my expectations were low, so it’s not how many losses this team will get that will make me disappointed. It’s the lack of effort. In the 1st half of the opener, they played with a lot of effort. Played good D, did a good job on the boards, and were sharp on rotations. But in the 2nd half, they completely fell off. The team (mainly Blatche) did a terrible job on defense. Blatche didn’t even bother moving his feet in the 2nd half, and let Humphries own him. If they played with the same effort they played with in the 1st half, we would’ve easily won the game.
And the team lacks the talent to make the playoffs. Wall has potential, but he’s not fully ready yet, and needs to develop his pacing, decision-making, and his jumpshot. Young can score, but he’s not a guy that’s going to make his teammates better. Shart is done. Blatche is talented, but out of shape. JaVale is getting better, but still needs to stop making silly mistakes on D and start boxing out. Our rookies have been solid so far, but we can’t expect them to turn this team around from the gate.

i also agree with this
except for the implication that the only thing holding blatche back is his conditioning.
