Javale McGee's Contract
Hey everybody, Clippers fan here. This week, the Clips matched a 4 yr / 43 million offer sheet from Golden State to retain DeAndre Jordan. Now, throughout their short careers, DJ and Javale McGee have been similar players, both statistically and in play style, with McGee always having a slight edge over DJ. So here's my question to you: If DeAndre Jordan, a former 2nd round draft pick, who averaged 7 points and 7 rebounds last year, was able to grab an 8-figure salary, then what could Javale McGee get (10/8 last year)?

Jordan is better than McGee right now
3 things became clear to me:
1. The market is set at $10mill per with the Deandre Jordan signing
2. People are not not convinced McGee will ever ‘get it’
3. The C market is thin and any real alternative on the open market will command more than Jordan, especially since we need to convince him to come to D.C.
Conclusion: Based on the above observations I think Ernie would be doing good business if we can lock him up early for 35/3yr deal. Even better if its a frontloaded deal.
McGee might never realize his full potential, but he’s already a very serviceble center and better alternatives aren’t really out there for us to realistically obtain. With John still being on his rookie deal, we have the capspace and by making it a 3 deal, it’s a very tradable contract, although we might get nothing in a trade if he really doesn’t improve

wouldn't Javale be a RFA
so the contract that he is offered by another team would likely be the maximum 4 years.. Also, Javale is bigger than Jordan, and verages more points, rebounds, and blocks in the same time, i believe.
Yeah - but
You’re forgetting the far to many goaltends… penchant for making really, really stupid plays, like dribbling the length of the court…. and the fact that he still cannot seem to hold his ground in the defensive post…
DeAndre Jordan, while not having some of the offensive skills that JaVale possesses, seems to have settled into his role as a defensive stopper and rebounder. He seems to do the things he does well, and doesn’t do the things he can’t do…
JaVale has not learned that yet… He still thinks he can dribble the basketball, shoot jumpers from 18 feet and dunk from the foul line….
JaVale has a bigger “upside” than DeAndre – but only if he “gets it”….
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
this is exactly why
I came over here. Watching Javale twice year when he plays the Clips doesn’t tell me those things.
Also the Clippers last year were a better team than we were, but perhaps Blake was "stealing" potential rebounds and points DeAndre would otherwise have.
I suppose
as long as we get 20 rebounds between them. I would like to see DJ get to be a 10ppg/12rpg/2.5bpg player, and I think that Javale cold reach 15/15/4 in his prime. He is a freakish athlete.
Kevin Love averaged 15 last year, but that kind of number is really really hard to keep up over a long period of time
and the way NBA rules are with the 3 second lane and depending on the team’s “board crashing” philosophy, It’s really hard for anyone to get past 11-12 boards. I don’t think JaVale will be averaging 15 boards a game any season in his career, though he probably will go past 10 in at least a couple seasons. He does have better shooting ability than advertised as well, so I actually don’t mind him taking some shots at 16-18 feet, and same with Blatche, contrary to what many here want. If JaVale was a great three point shooter, yes, I want him to take a two or three shots a game, esp. if we a have a large lineup for example, but that’s beyond the point now.
Of course they can make shots from 25 feet
But that just leads to less efficient shots than they could be taking. Not to mention, Dray was extremely ineffecient from that range last year. And Javale would be too if he were allowed to take them.
I'm a Wizards fan. We've been trying to tell you about Lebron for years. Hated the man before it was cool.

I meant signing him before january 25th (extention deadline)
We have his bird rights so we can offer 5 yrs but we don’t know if he is that long term C for Wall yet. There is a legitimate chance he isn’t (see Rook’s comment) so it wouldn’t be wise to hamstring our capspace longterm.
If he want’s to see what he’s worth in FA, fine, but Ernie (our GM) shouldn’t match a huge contract unless he shows us he’s worth it. We are going to have to pay $10+ mill for our franchise C at some point, but we have to know for sure the guy that gets it, is actually worth it. I don’t want to the Wiz become another Cleveland or Orlando with all the capspace tied up in the wrong players and see a disgruntled Wall pull a Melo on us.

JaVale will get a max or near max deal
regardless of what team he’s on, even he dribbles up court all the time and goaltends three times a game.
If the Wizards sign McGee to a max or near max deal:
1. They will be fine if McGee lives up to that contract by becoming and consistently performing at an all-star level, and is recognized as one of the top 5 or 6 centers in the game; or
2. They will be screwed for the length of McGee’s contract otherwise, and will be stuck in the lottery during that time.
I don't think he'll get a max deal or anything near that.
If Tyson Chandler and Nene just got 4 years around $60 million, no way you could justify paying JaVale the same amount at this point in his career. Those guys are getting contracts in their primes, JaVale would be getting one before he reaches his prime. I’d say 4 years for $45 million should do it.

I would say that 4 years $45 million would be a "near max" deal
If I have my numbers right, the most McGee’s salary could be at the end of his rookie deal is about $14.5 million in the first year (25% of the team’s salary cap).
The Wiz should..
…extend him and get an imposing and inspiring big man’s coach.
DJ is better than JaVale
He is an essential part of your team. While he may have only put up 7 and 7, he played a little less than JaVale. If you adjust per minute
JaVale per36:
13.1 pts, 56.6 TS%, 10.4 reb, 3.2 blk, 0.6 ast, 0.7 stl, 1.7 tov, 3.8 fls
DeAndre per36:
10.0 pts, 64.8 TS%, 10.1 reb, 2.5 blk, 0.7 ast, 0.7 stl, 1.8 tov, 4.5 fls
As you can see, they’re very similar players. What separates Jordan from JaVale is his hyper-efficient scoring and smarter defense. DeAndre’s only problem is his foul rate. 65% true shooting is absolutely ridiculous, and that’s why Jordan is such a valuable player IMO. Definitely worth that contract as is, and if he can improve on the weak aspects of his game then even better.
JaVale is more skilled
But DeAndre knows his role better. But both are overrated defenders.
