Flip Saunders On Nick Young's Free Agency: 'A Lot Of The Money Right Now Is Drying Up'

Flip Saunders was on "The Sports Junkies" on 106.7 The Fan this morning for a brief appearance, and in it, he discussed the status of restricted free agent Nick Young. As each day passes, more questions arise about his future with the team. In light of that, I was surprised to hear Saunders so talkative about Young's status.

Saunders did say that Ernie Grunfeld is "still talking" to Young's representatives about a long-term deal, but he followed that up by saying that, "as in most negotiations," the two sides are apart as far as the terms of a new deal. Then, Saunders said this:

"With Nick's situation, what's happened is a lot of the money right now is drying up in some places. I think he's kind of waiting to see if something does happen. There's always trades and seeing if anything pans out with some of those other trades and see where everything falls into place."

I'm guessing there was a reason Saunders put it that way.

I think he's pressuring Nick to just come back to DC.

the longer Nick holds out, the further his value drops to every team at this point, considering the short preseason.

nope...he wants him gone and he is just covering bases

He will feel unwanted and will likely look to go to a contender. He may have asked for too much, maybe not, but clearly I noticed early this summer that things had soured…oh well…

With Eric Gordon gone, LA probably seems pretty attractive right now…and we are going to wind up feeling like we let another one get away….

I guess Ted’s home grown theory is out the door…

I hope we make the push sign him already

A young team like the Clippers or Minny could decide to swoop in and just drive up the cost to resign him

Not the Cllippers

They just put 14 million or so in the last week.

Pacers are the only dangerous team.

pacers have both brandon rush and paul george

if anything they have a logjam at the 2

They just tried to trade for OJ Mayo

So obviously, they think they have some needs at guard.

Pacers have cap room.

This is not a hostage situation

thats the way I see it Ernie and crew want Nick back at a small number because they want him to fit into the puzzle not assume a larger part of it like he maybe thinking.

I think they are in full we’d like you back but if not thats fine to and thats where they should be, Nick is not a make or break talent.

Talking about Eric Gordon

This quote FLOORED me:

Sources divulge agent Rob Pelinka’s $18 million, four-year demand begrudgingly convinced the Clippers to include him in the pristine package.

So because the Clippers didn’t want to commit to a 4-year extension with Eric Gordon, they included him in a trade for Chris Paul? 4-years, $18 Million is a paltry sum for a player like Gordon…

Don’t get me wrong, there are holes in Gordon’s game: he doesn’t rebound much, he’s a poor passer, and tends to get blinders on when he has the ball (by the way, does this remind anyone of someone else?)… but Gordon is one of the best young Shooting Guards in the League. He shoots a high percentage. Gets to the Free Throw line a LOT. Hits a decent percentage of 3-point shots.. And he’s an OK defender (read: average)…

And he’s not worth $18 Million over 4 years?

Reeks of cheap Don Sterling

EG is a top flight guard in this leguet. He not only shoots at a high clip anywhere, he shiwed a penchant for slashing in effectively last season. Turrible move by the clippers

by jsuh0 on Dec 15, 2011 1:45 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

It also leaves a huge hole in the Clippers roster....

I assume they’ll play Chris Paul and Chauncy Billups together – with Chauncy playing SG. And I assume they’ll try to move Mo Williams… They have a very, very good team, with tremendous depth and All-Stars, former All-Stars and future All-Stars at every position, but they have one major flaw…

PG – Chris Paul, Mo Williams, Eric Bledsoe
SG – Chauncy Billups, Randy Foye
SF – Caron Butler, Ryan Gomes
PF – Blake Griffin, Trey Thompkins
C – DeAndre Jordan

They absolutely need a knock-down 3-point shooter…..

by Rook6980 on Dec 15, 2011 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Not to mention a backup big man.

If Trey Thompkins is going to single-handedly have to backup both Jordan and Griffin… phew. Hopefully they trade Mo Williams, Randy Foye or Bledsoe for a big man. Josh McRoberts would’ve been a solid pickup if they could have gotten him before their rivals across the street did.

by ukfantdav on Dec 15, 2011 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

yeah they have no depth at the 4 or 5

enough to be a 6th or 7th seed at best. There is only so much the blake show can do… they need some quality veterans in the frontcourt before contention is within the realm of possibility

It's not that bad

You can play Ryan Gomes at the 4 in a small ball line-up. I think adding two scrub centers would fix it. Add Hilton Amstrong and Kris Humphries and it’s a solid team.

by GJennings on Dec 15, 2011 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

Humphries a scrub?? He was one of the best rebounders last year!

by Dutch Hoopfan on Dec 15, 2011 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

Wasn't calling him a scrub

Though I see how. The wording wasn’t well chosen. The point was getting a little bit of front court depth would solve that problem. I picked two guys who were free agents.

But, no, Humphries is not a scrub. He just play one on Tv.

by GJennings on Dec 15, 2011 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

Um...they're also AWFUL at SF, potentially weak at SG, and shorthanded up front

No offense to Butler fans (of which I am one), but you do remember how much of a negative he was here 2 years ago, right? He’s 2 years older now and hasn’t played in an NBA game in almost a year. We remember Foye too — not terrible, but he’s not a major player on a contender. Gomes is terrible. Jordan is on his way to becoming good, but you can’t call him a strong starter yet. /And who’s his backup? And can Billups play SG? At his age? I thought he was showing his age last year, so I expect more decline this year.

I love me some Chris Paul, and Griffin is obviously a beast, but I don’t see tremendous depth, or even a well-rounded team here. I’m guessing 52 wins and a 2nd round loss — any better than that probably requires an MVP performance from one of the big dogs (which is quite possible).

Nah....

Nick is not at the stage in his career that he takes less money to go to a contender….

He’ll sign the biggest contract available..

EIGHTEEN MILLION FOR FOUR YEARS FOR ERIC FREAKING GORDON!

I screamed so loud in my brain that I was amazed my coworkers didn’t notice…what utter NONSENSE

by Bullet Nation in Exile on Dec 15, 2011 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

You guys crack me up

Isn’t it obvious that the information Rook cites is wrong? After giving DeAndre Jordan $10 million a year and Caron $8 million a year, the Clippers are going to balk at giving Gordon $4 million a year? I highly doubt it.

Yeah -

I didn’t realize where that came from …..

Now it might make sense….. Vecsey is the same guy that “broke” the Arenas Gun-gate story with his sensationalized account of an “OK Corral showdown” with players “brandishing” loaded guns, and “chambering rounds” in the Wizard’s locker room..

I'm really confused as to how he still has a job...

Although I guess he is writing for they NY Post which is little more than a glorified tabloid…

please

Sign him. And let’s he him in practice so we can have some depth at the 2

by Shawn-Paul Muth on Dec 15, 2011 1:56 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

I think Nick will be back here

with a 4 year deal for $20 million or so. If Ernie and Flip truly don’t want him, I’d prefer signing him and then trading him at some point over the next year and a half rather than letting him walk and getting nothing in return.

by hotplate on Dec 15, 2011 1:59 PM EST reply actions

Nick doesnt want to come back.

and the Wiz dont want him that badly. He better do something soon or he’s going to be scrambling to find a spot somewhere.

by DCrez on Dec 15, 2011 2:39 PM EST reply actions

yeah that's my guess as well

if he truly wanted a roster spot on this team, then we would have heard at least something from him. Just because he’s an RFA doesn’t mean that he automatically comes back. I think the organization has gotten the vibe from him that he wants to go somewhere else, and for me that’s fine. We have a talented backcourt with John, Shelvin and JCraw (along with Roger) as it is- I wouldn’t cry if Nick left. Thanks for all the memories dude

Talented backcourt?

Wall’s talented and could be a break out star this year. As far as I’m concerned, the jury’s still out on Crawford. Get that shooting percentage over 40 and 3 point percentage over 30 and then we can start using the word “talented”. Mack and Mason will make for a below average second unit backcourt for the upcoming season. Mack will need some time to adjust to the NBA and Mason’s on the downside of his career.
Put Nick into the mix and the dynamic changes greatly for the better.

devil's advocate

reading Flip’s quote can we strike up an absurd trade idea that just might make some sense in some circles (hey, people can dream, right?):

Young + Blatche + McGee + 1st rounder pick + whatever else is needed for D Howard!

Then next year amnesty Lewis and sign a 3rd big name to counter Miami, NYK and anyone else.

what an amazing pipe dream…

by bigity b on Dec 15, 2011 5:01 PM EST reply actions

We will NOT amnesty Lewis next year

he represents a massive trade chip…holding on to him this year (which we’ve said we are) and amnestying him next year makes little sense unless Ted is planning to channel his inner Dan Snyder

by Bullet Nation in Exile on Dec 16, 2011 7:48 AM EST up reply actions

plus the Wizards have a $10 million buyout option

I think they would use the buyout and take a $10 million cap hit over amnestying him and taking a $12 million wallet hit (paying him $22 million not to play for us).
