Why is Nick Young not getting the same love as other Shooting Guards? It's all in the STATS.

Nick Young, 17 points a game for 31.8 minutes a night is pretty good. 19.7 points per 36 minutes. Not exceptionally good but decent.

Eric Gordon scored 22 points a game in 37.7 minutes of work. 21.3 points per 36 minutes. To me that's alot better. I love Eric Gordon.

Marcus Thornton, 27 games after his trade for Carl Landry, 21.3 points per game in 38.1 minutes of work per game. 20.1 points per 36 minutes. Nice.

Rodney Stuckey, 15.5 points per game in 31.2 minutes a night. 17.8 points per 36 minutes. Not exceptionally good but still decent.

After the scoring is when it goes all downhill for Nick Young. His Assists per game/36 minutes is absolutely attrocious. We can make up whatever excuse we want but averaging 1 assist a game for a starting guard is a nightmare. His rebounding is Ok compared to the other 3. Nick does not even average 1 steal a game. We can talk about his improved on the ball defense but stats do not lie.

Nick wants big time money. It doesn't look like anyone at the moment is going to give it to him and for good reason. If you are a GM and looking for a Starting Shooting Guard that 1 Assist and less than 1 Steal a game would be hard to shake off in your head.

I love Nick Young, but for my team, he would be my 3rd guard in a 3 guard rotation only if the other 2 guards are great passers. Fortunately for the Wizards Jordan Crawford averaged 4.2 Assists in a 36 minute average.

Nick Young's Stats say do not break the bank for him. Simple numbers say that Marcus Thornton and Rodney Stuckey should demand alot more money than Nick Young. They are definitely more productive. They are simply better all around players. The Stats definitely back it up.

Assists per 36 minutes:

Nick Young: 1.3

Eric Gordon: 4.2

Marcus Thornton: 3.2

Rodney Stuckey: 6.0

Rebounds per 36 minutes:

Nick Young: 3.1

Eric Gordon: 2.8

Marcus Thornton: 4.4

Rodney Stuckey: 3.1

Steals per 36 minutes:

Nick Young: 0.8

Eric Gordon: 1.2

Marcus Thornton: 1.6

Rodney Stuckey: 1.3

Well I'm not too sure but

I hear often that he is one of the most efficient scorers in the NBA, and if he did that in the WIZARDS than he can provide some spark needed for a lot of teams in the NBA (BULLS for an instance). I know some of his numbers are atrocious but scorers are always in need, which is actually why I’m surprised no one is offering him a decent contract yet.

I think a lot of GM’s must be blinded by his sad assist numbers, that’s my guess. I would rather have NY than Marcus Thorton and Rodney Stuckey all day.

We would all love nicks numbers to be up

But on our team and flips offense you need a player like him that can score efficiently and be able to come off screens and shoot. I think he should just make the right play/pass more often when needed but we don’t necessarily need to look at how many assists he averages. Also steals are not a good way to measure a players defense

True . . .

although if reports are accurate that he is looking for $7 to $8 million a year, that’s just crazy. 4 and $20 to $25 is probably closer to the range.

I think it's pretty obvious that Nick's got a bad rep around the league

Which is why no one’s really reached out to him (that we know of!) Maybe its the stats maybe its maturity or maybe its his asking price but whatever it is it has resulted in him being one of the last productive non-amnestied FA guards remaining without an offer (besides the QO). I hope the brain trust uses it to our advantage, getting him back here for a lower price that expected and keeping him hungry. From out standpoint it’s GOOD that Nick Young isn’t a hot commodity. It makes the difficult “how much am I willing to pay” decision unapplicable.

I don't know why he has such a bad rep around the league

The guy improved so much last year. I could see if people were saying he’s a ‘ballhog’ or ‘dumbass’, but it;s not 2007 anymore. He’s can absolutely be a starting SG for a contender (if they have players that cover up his weaknesses.

But this can be a blessing in disguise for us, because we’ll probably get him cheap.

Drew League

Still looked like a bit of an idiot. I mean, the guy is in his mid-twenties. It’s not that hard to be an idiot then.

Yea but in the NBA now

There are a bunch of guys in their low 20s who aren’t idiots and are leading their teams to great things. I mean Young is the same age as LeBron.

by Ron Carlos Jeines on Dec 16, 2011 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

I dispute that Lebron is not an idiot

But he does have leadership potential and talent that Nick does not. I really think Nick doesn’t get love because of the assists combined with the fact that he came into the league as a black hole. I don’t think Nick has done enough in the eyes of those outside this community to escape his initial reputation.

Pierre is the smooth operator. @JaValeMcGee34 is the monster you've grown to know on the court.

Or maybe

everyone’s waiting for the market to set his price before they move in

The mothership has NY rated as the 8th best FA available

Behind legitimate talents like rodney stuckey and aaron afflalo (#1 and #2) and illegitimate talents like Alexis Ajinca (#6) and the corpse of Peja Stojakovic (#7) yet ahead of the great Joey Dorsey. REALLY?!?! People actually like Alexis “3.1 ppg” Ajinca more than NY? People really don’t like Nick.

One thing often not discussed when speaking of NicK Young

Is how he never turns over the ball. Yeah, Nick does not get assists, at all. But he doesn’t turn the ball over either. He affects the team with his outstanding shooting, scores rather efficiently, plays great defense, scores within the flow of the offense instead of needing the ball to score, and does not turn the ball over. He does not pass or rebound well. He could be better at playing team defense. He has a little bit of growth yet. When you look at turnovers and assume small growth, then Young looks like a fourth or fifth starter on a championship team.
