Javale playing SF
I dont see any skill he has that Mcgee doesnt, they are kind of clones in a way. He’ll be throwing down crazy, uncontested, dunks….but he’ll also be getting knocked on his ass a lot being so skinny. His length will bother some players, but he’ll also get exposed on the perimeter being 7’ tall. He’ll do a lot of good things but also be insufficient in many areas and we’ll be asking ourselves just what position should he be playing…in other words, classic EG pick!

This is why I'm afraid that, in three yrs, we'll find out that Ernie used a # 6 overall on a future sparkplug off the bench...

This kinda comment always gets me....
Look at other 6-10 picks, especially in years acknowledged by all to be weak. If Vesely is just a good bench player in 3 years (and he’s helping the team win games), it will still be a decent pick. So many of these picks in this range don’t pan out. Vesely could be very good, is unlikely to be horrible (given that he’s already contributed to pro teams at a young age), and was the right pick at the time - even if that means he’s a sparkplug forward off the bench in 3 years. In that case, he might be like Dennis Rodman in Detroit. I also think that Booker and Seraphin will always be bench players -- and that they’ll still turn out to be good picks. There are only a few LeBron’s (top picks that meet/exceed expectations) and only a few Ginobli’s (late picks that turn out very good), and all GM’s always wiff on some picks always. I truly believe that if Veseley turns out to make some team’s 7 man roster, and that team wins 50 games, it’s a good pick. I think people’s expectations about draft picks are way outside of reality.

Isnt he the 2nd highest pick on the roster after Wall?
It seems strange to me we would need to make excuses for him when theoretically he should be the 2nd or 3rd most talented player on the team. EG drooled over this kid for at least 2yrs, he should be better than “energy guy.” Lots of seem to involve keeping his role so small and defined that he can do a few niche things to fill in the gaps while other players score the points and grab the rebounds. It would seem to me we should have the reverse opinion, Jan is the high pick and has played pro for 3 years, he should be better than Mcgee, Dray, Booker, Seraphin (not as a rookie necessarily). Hell, we vilify players like Blatche, Mcgee, and Young who were picked much later in the draft….don’t see why the bar should be set so low for the player Ernie was globe-hopping to scout for 2-3 years
well I'm with you there...
I don’t think we should vilify any of them. I think the expectations are out of control. (Also, I did not mean to cross out half my post – not sure how that happened.)
Also, Ernie always says he’s “been interested in player X for years.” His job is to scout everyone. It seems like people always take those comments super-literally, and assume that Ernie’s been obsessing about the guy. It just means Ernie has scouted the guy and liked him enough to trade X for him, or draft him at the #X pick. People assume Ernie has been stalking the guy for years. And for each guy like this - Veseley, Kirk, Seraphin, Armstrong, Yi — people ramp up their expectations because they believe Ernie’s been obsessing.
Ernie’s just being polite when he says he’s been “following” player X for years. I don’t know why people read so much into such comments.

Skinny =/= Weak
I’m sure he will need to put on some muscle, but this guy has been playing in the more physical Euroleague, so I’m sure he knows how to use his strength. Coming into a more athletic league, he will need to work on his lateral movement more than anything imo.
But don’t forget, there are some great defending skinny guys out there. Tayshaun Prince was never big, but he was able to give guys trouble. Jared Jeffries as well.
And from what I’ve heard about him, he is a much smarter player than Javale, who’s biggest problems seem to be mental, so I wouldn’t think of Javale too much when thinking of Jan.
Looks like he understands the game better than Javale
He seems to be a good cutter and move smart without the ball. And that really helps a PG like Wall make plays. Also bails out a PG who is a little turnover happy and occasionally goes to the rim recklessly.
Anyway, he is better than Javale in that he seems smarter already. You won’t really see Javale working himself open in the halfcourt offens, or even rolling off of a screen to get open.
I am still apprehensive of the pick too, but I don’t think Javale would be nearly as competent if you dropped him at SF in the NBA.
I'm a Wizards fan. We've been trying to tell you about Lebron for years. Hated the man before it was cool.

I think it's just a different game as opposes to smarts
there is so much less iso in europe, the offenses are predicated on all that movement. Flip’s offense is predicated on hitting 17ft Js, if Jan wants to be more than garbage man under Flip he’ll have to work on that J
That's the key here
You can live with someone being all energy and athleticism without a jumper if they can move without the ball. Shawn Marion and Ronnie Brewer aren’t shooters or great ball handlers, but they’ve managed to be extremely efficient and effective scorers when paired with good passers and playmakers. Vesely seems like he’d be perfect with Wall, Dray (still a great passer) and a center who can defend, rebound, and pick and pop a la Kurt Thomas or Okur.

We haven't heard much from Jan this Summer...
He was supposed to come over in late September to work out , but the ongoing lockout may have changed those plans..
Anyone have any current info on him?
Oh and KurisuDevil, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you see Jan play. Like Booker, he brings a ton of energy and effort every game. Like Booker, he’s a smart player with a high basketball IQ. Like Booker, he’s an incredibly gifted athlete. Unlike Booker (6’ 7.5"), he can use his size and length (6’11", huge wingspan and a 9’1" standing reach) to his advantage. Neither player is a very good jump shooter – and both rely on their activity level to score and affect the game; but Jan will be less at a disadvantage on defense against tall, athletic Power Forwards – and could provide some extremely good mis-matches playing SF for the Wizards.
Here’s a question for the BF community:
Who do you think will have the most number of impressive dunks during the season (whenever it starts):? Now I’m not talking about run-of-the-mill dunks here – I’m talking about monster, bring the house down, cancel the rent check to buy a jersey dunks…..
JaVale McGee (got robbed in the Dunk contest last year)
Jan Vesely (unquestionably the best dunker in Europe)
Trevor Booker (had some absolute monster dunks last year)
John Wall (seems to have regained his unparalleled athleticism)
Nick Young (A long shot – but perhaps the most creative Wizard when he’s “in the air” )
What do you guys think? Remember, I’m not talking about the most dunks… obviously McGee should run away with that distinction if he plays all year – I mean the kind of dunks you are still talking about the next day around the water cooler.
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
I can hardly wait to see him work with Wall...
The Wizards will be an exciting team to watch, hope the season happens in due course.
I don't know...
this was arguably one of the most electrifying things to watch last year…we’re finally getting down to REAL basketball! To be honest, until Jan shows he can make the switch to dealing with defenders who can play above the rim a la Yi Jianlian

Wow
I totally forgot to finish that thought ‘…it’s got to be Trevor Booker’
by Bullet Nation in Exile on Oct 19, 2011 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Booker or McGee
Vesely may be the best dunker in Europe, but that is a low bar. And I actually doubt it, but I don’t see any European games.
I watched that video, and the others around the draft. Here is what I see.
He can’t jump.
He is tall and can get his hand over the rim, but his vertical is below average. He pulls his feet up alot by grabbing the rim.
He is going to be in for a rude awakening in the NBA.
Look at 1:47, 2:00 and 2:15 for prime examples.

Good question
Booker’s going to have some ferocious slams, but I think Nick Young will notch the most impressive dunk of the season. No matter who comes out on top, the Wizards have to have one of the best dunking rosters in the league.

Good news/Bad news...
The good news: this guy seems freakin awesome!
The bad news: we probably won’t see him play this year.

All i can say is
Prove me wrong Jan…prove me wrong
Cuz all i see when i look at your highlights and etc is a tall lanky guy thats easily excitable with a couple highlights of a jumper and some VERY overrated hops
the fans
how come nobody comment on the crowd. since I am born in neighbouring country of Vesely I know what it is to have this crowd support you ( most of them in Europe are crazy soccer fans) , its like a extra person on the squad that can win you games( believe it) . I’ve watch the wizards past 7 years and I am always mad about how fans are not involved in the game : empty Verizon center in bad seasons, nobody yell or support, no choreography or fan clubs organizing the fans, this is not a Movie theather.I really hope this will change and believe , we will see better basketball on this court, if we can at least get close to the golden state fans in the playoffs, do you remember them :)

Apparently the intro says: “from the land of hockey, he flew into the land of basketball, and then he flew over everybody else. Easy. Elegant. Attractive. Fast. etc…”
Also-dominating on euro mix tapes isn’t a good judge of NBA talent. E.G.-James Gist
I’m hopeful the guy can pull it off in the NBA though.
I have had the worst day of my life
And this has made me laugh for about 5 minutes.
I have no good signature ideas.

Two things about Jan:
1. Physically, I just wonder how his athleticism, which he clearly relies on to score the ball, will hold up against the athletes of the NBA. There are bigger stronger and more athletic guys all bundled into one package that he is going to see a lot of in the NBA that he isn’t used to.
2. If he learns to shoot, I think he will be as good as Harrison Barnes will turn out to be(but obviously in different ways). He looks like a great mover without the ball and the matchup advantages that he could create are awesome.

47%FT….for every other player we measure their shooting potential by their FT% right?

I've never heard that suggestion before.
Bad free throws usually means big hands (Rondo, CWebb, Shaq, Duncan) – which usually means the player can do a whole lot of other things well (pass, dribble, pickup loose balls).

Recommendation
Mute this video, and play the sound from this while you watch the Vesely mix. It syncs up really well.

Nice sound.
The movie, “Drive,” better do well, because for a European band to break into the American market, a name like “College” is not going to stand out too well. Like it, though.

You'd be suprised
College has been around for a while, way before Drive came out. They’ve been on indie labels for a while, so i doubt breaking into the market is something they’re going for.

Is there anything in this vid
That shows me that Jan Vesely can do something that JaVale McGee can’t? (Aside from doing gigantically moronic stuff like dunking from the free throw line and making a fool of yourself?)
Honestly the coolest thing about this mix was the 300 Violin Orchestra rock remix.
