In any organization there is a chain of command. I have 13 Employees under me. I have several layers above me. We rely on the chain of command to function as one. When that chain is broken there are serious consequences from the bottom to the top. My job is to make sure that all 13 Employees below me who are seperated by 2 seperate layers of supervision go through the chain of command for all needs. An employee can break the chain and go over the Supervisor, BUT they will have to suffer the consequences.
The Owners have the Commissioner. Love him or Hate him there is no doubt that David Stern is in charge of the Owners side. When the Owners were at 47% and he said he could take the 50/50 split to the Owners for approval, I believe him. You have not heard one word from any Owner. They have not broken rank. They are in it together. If one of them does not like what's going on, you will not hear about it. When Ted Leonsis stepped out of line last year, the Commissioner fined him. That was it for Mr. Leonsis. Everyone else got the message.
When the Players Executive Committee were working on the 50/50 split and word was coming out that a breakthrough in the negotiations were happening, to the point that the Owners were being brought in to hammer out and complete the largest hurdle, Billy Hunter brought in his Superstar players to the table. Not one of them was part of the 40 meetings or so that the players were having with the Owners group. The Star Players then proceeded to destroy every good work that had happened. Dwayne Wade had a shouting match with the Commissioner. Kevin Garnett said the players are not giving in to any changes. The Superstar Agents came up and said that the Players should not give up anything as well. JaVale McGee made the mistake of tweeting what's on his mind that he thought that several players were ready to cave in and play ball. Derrick Fisher and others then called him out and JaVale is on the end of a whole lot of criticism in the Cyber World. Question: So not one player is ready to cave in? So not one player is ready to take the Owners 47% (if not 50%) so that they can start earning their money right now? That is dillusional. Do you mean to tell me that these players who have 1 year guaranteed contracts do not want to play right now? If the season is cancelled their basketball careers may very well be over. Guess what? There is a whole new group of players coming in next year, and the year after that, and the year after that. Unlike the Owners, it appears that the Players do not have a leader. Billy Hunter is suppose to be that guy.
When the NFL was on the verge of missing regular season games Demaurice Smith was adamant at not letting anyone new enter into the negotiations with the Owners. If you were not in it in the beginning then you will not be in it at the end. It was brilliant. Not only were no regular season games missed but only one single pre-season game was missed, the Hall of Fame game. There was no doubt on WHOSE THE BOSS.
Whose calling the shot on the Players side? I think Billy Hunter has been more of a detriment than a help throughout the entire process. The only Superstar that is on the Executive Committee is Chris Paul. Why is that? Derrick Rose said it's not the players fault that part of the season has been cancelled and more games are in jeopardy. When he was asked why he has not participated in the negotiations he had a classic answer: " I had scheduling conflicts." (I could not help out the negotiations either because of my scheduling conflilcts). JaVale's comments were at least real. There are real players hurting because of the missed games. They will never make it up. Poor Jeffers. Poor Owens. Poor Hamady. This could be their last chance to stick. They could do so well that they get extended. Every day missed is a day closer to the end for them. New models will be in next year.
If I'm the Owners I do not have another negotiating session with the Players unless I know for sure who is charge. I would not sit in another hotel conference room for the whole day knowing that no matter what is said or agreed upon it will not hold up. Too many people in the process on the Players side. There is no Chain of Command. There is only Chaos.
Do you have Demaurice Smith's phone number?
