John Wall doesn't give that extra effort on defense to get in front of the man he is guarding.

TNT should've treated Lebron's return to Cleveland game like 2k11 and cut the game off after the Cavs were down by 30. lol

This was a good game for John

He must have learned a ton about what it takes to become elite like CP3, on both sides of the court.

I don't think it was a good game for him playing...but more of a good learning experience.

Wiz are just way too soft in the paint

I cannot stand to watch anymore of Blatche’s fadeway 17 footers.

by gilsix on Jan 1, 2011 9:45 PM EST reply actions

Blatche frustrates me so much

I’ve been defending Dray all season, but I can’t after this game. Blatche is our only true low-post scorer, but he refuses to stay in the post and instead camps on the perimeter, sometimes even all the way out to the 3-point line. Because of this, we get no easy shots because we’re forced to shoot jumpshot’s all the time. Blatche’s post game has regressed this season, but I truly believe that he can be the low-post scorer we need because of what he showed me last season, but I don’t think he wants to be.

He has no confidence in his game right now. When he does get the ball in the post, he’s not looking to score but is instead looking to pass. He has no confidence in his J either, because it hasn’t been doing down recently. He’s one of the main reasons why we lost the game tonight.

Flip needs to tell him to stay down low in the post. He also needs to lose the extra pounds. There really slowing him down.

by iNFaMOUS SwaGG on Jan 1, 2011 9:50 PM EST reply actions

Weight Room

John needs to put on 10 pounds of muscle in is legs alone. It only will it improve his durability, defense, and ability to finish around the rim. I have no doubt he will do that coming back from this summer.

Nick Young mentioned that word around the league is you just have to play him physical and you can take him out of his game. Guess what Nick, they are right. He needs to pack on another 10, but mostly in his upper body and his arms. Moderate chance he does this.

Mcgee keeps saying he doesn’t want to put on any more weight. He is just holding himself back. He is afraid to take contact in the chest at this point. Thats part of the reason Ariza posterized him so badly. No chance he commits to a big weight gain.

I still like the teams chances of gelling after all-star break.

Start the rebuilding process, FIRE GRUNFELD!

I hate when people throw around numbers in terms of weight. As any fitness guru would tell you, numbers don't mean shit.

Take Chris Johnson—i know its another sport but its a good point—for example…he runs through arm tackles all the time. I know he’s damn fast, but he still breaks a lot arm tackles.

by tw10 on Jan 1, 2011 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

I think he was just saying that Wall, Young, and Mcgee

Might be more durable if they put on more muscle. I too worry about Wall’s durability. A lot of athletes worry about losing their explosiveness if they gain weight, which is probably why Mcgee is hesitant to gain weight. Plus, it takes time and a lot of hard work, regimented eating and weight training; it takes time. I think Wall will grow into his body he is only 20……

by bassguy4 on Jan 2, 2011 1:10 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah Wall is going to put on more weight aka muscle as he gets older.

He’s still got his “young man” body, he is going to get bigger. It wouldn’t even hurt Wall’s game to get bigger. He has explosion and quickness to spare, and it wouldn’t hurt in the injury prevention category.

McGee is an idiot if he actually said that he doesn’t want to put on more muscle. Does he know that most of the good big men in this league play under the rim anyway. Dwight Howard and Blake Griffin are the two that come to mind, that successfully play with Javale’s style. And they know you have to be big enough to move people out of your way, and to prevent people from doing the same to you.

I am going to keep cheering Gil, like it is 2005. Lets see some of that swag return, because that is why we loved you to begin with.

And do us a favor Gilbert, beat Lebron in the postseason... and RUB IT IN!

I was @ the game tonight!!!! Club seeeeeeeets section 218 HOLLA! Mike do you sit in the media section?

And Rook you made me feel like a f**kin nerd man…Watching the Wizards in person, I realized pretty much 90% of what you say about the guys is SPOT ON.

This game was a perfect example of Style vs Substance(minus the Ariza dunk)…

Chris Paul put on a show. He reminded me why box scores don’t tell you shit.

I’ll follow up with a bit more later. Overall I feel I got my money’s worth…except from my man Dray :(…….Im still a fan of his though!!!

by tw10 on Jan 1, 2011 10:19 PM EST reply actions

How does Chris Paul remind you that box scores don't tell you shit?

He puts up the best box scores of any player in the league other than Kevin Love

by zl on Jan 2, 2011 1:08 AM EST up reply actions

I dont think so...Rondo's #'s have looked crazy this year with all his 15+ assist games

and his rebounds…

Chris doesn’t put up monster numbers but does all the little(and big) things to help his team win…Just watch them without him on the court…they are a mess

by tw10 on Jan 2, 2011 1:28 AM EST up reply actions

He doesn't put up the overrated stats

He’s not a ridiculous scorer or anything, but he does put up great numbers in the most underrated statistical categories. He scores remarkably efficiently, doesn’t turn the ball over, rebounds well, and gets a ton of steals (not to mention 10 apg). Best point guard of the past 10 years, sorry Jason Kidd.

by zl on Jan 2, 2011 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

But there are some positives to be taken from tonight's game

Wall is getting back up to speed and is looking really good out there. His 3-pointer is greatly improved. I want him shoot the ball more. There were times he passed up open looks, but given the choice between Wall shooting a mid-range jumper and Blatche engaging his man in some kind of ill-conceived isolation, dribble-behind-the-back, chuck a falling contested fadeaway at the last second from the wing-type of shot, the choice is clear.

McGee had an awesome game. Lots of energy, good positioning. I want to see more pick & rolls with Wall tossing lobs to the basket. Bring back that summer league game.

by satchmore on Jan 1, 2011 10:31 PM EST reply actions

Lobs to the basket are fun

But they’re not something you build your offense around. Any disciplined defensive team can sniff those out and stop them. Easily. They work in a helter skelter setting like summer league, but if the defense is well coordinated, they just don’t work, even when the defense is at a huge disadvantage athletically. Ever watched Team USA go against a weak sister international team? Even with CP3 lofting the ball to LeBron or Dwight over a Division III NCAA quality opponent, alley oops work less than half the time. Lobs will work occasionally in an NBA regular season game, but almost never in the playoffs.

Where was Booker?

Paid money to see our young rebuilding team.
But had to suffer thru another night of
Blatche and Big Al Thornton.

Like everyone else from DC...

… I watched the Caps beat the Penguins in the outdoor winter classic.

Im not really a hockey fan, but that game was riveting. These teams hate each other.

Maybe someday the Wizards wil play big games like this one.

by CVC on Jan 1, 2011 11:38 PM EST reply actions

Our defensive focus is terrible

There are so many bad habits out there defensively. Particularly with Wall and Blatche. Both play pretty well when their man has the ball, but as soon their man gives it up, they lose all focus. Hopefully flip can help break these habits as the year goes on.

by Alpha_Snail on Jan 1, 2011 11:59 PM EST reply actions

Regarding the Bad Habits

Does Flip take the blame b/c he’s only a “OFFENSIVE-MINDED” coach?

Is “D” harder to teach than “O”, perhaps the Wiz needs to change up the approach/, b/c obviously they’re shooting themselves for the “D” focus (or lack thereof)

by Big Spoon on Jan 2, 2011 3:25 AM EST up reply actions

Don't feel like typing up all my thoughts...but there is one play that i remember...

Just a subtle, smart play that i’ve never really seen before, and further illustrates how smart Paul is…and how much he values each possession(something the Wizards really, really dont do.)

Here’s my breakdown of the play(again, most of you will probably think im stupid for bringing this up.

1.It was either late in the 3rd Q or early in the 4th, Washington has the ball in a halfcourt set.
2.The ball is swung to John at the top.
3. John pump fakes, and Paul bites, jumping almost straight at him.
4.John makes a quick move to get by Paul, and Chris grabs him.
5. Foul called, and instead of John making(or getting the chance to) a play towards the rim, Paul uses only his second foul to allow the Hornets to reset their D and attempt to stop the Wizards…he comes out for Jack, and the Wiz end up getting one point from Armstrong.

Maybe im being a little over-analytical, but its just one example of, again, how the guy makes the most of each play…and it’s why he’s my MVP pick…he is the engine, wheels, steering wheel, clutch, and gear shifter of that team.

P.S.—-His only turnover—-wasnt one. He didn’t travel.

by tw10 on Jan 1, 2011 11:59 PM EST reply actions

Yeah CP3 is a beast

He should win MVP this year and it’s an absolute travesty that he didn’t win in ’08

by zl on Jan 2, 2011 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

Yup...on offense he makes helps his team as much as Nash does...and he actually tries on defense

Nash doesn’t, or simply can’t. I love watching Stevie…but I think he might be the only 2 time MVP that has never been considered the best player in the league…and he’s never been clearly head and shoulders better than everyone else at his position.

by tw10 on Jan 2, 2011 1:38 AM EST up reply actions

Whoah!

Of course Nash tries. He plays hard all the time. I am not a Nash defender but I will never say Nash does not try. He just is not big.

Mayo, Thabeet for Young and Blatche

Yea I know Thabeet sucks, but I could deal with that bum to get OJ Mayo. Its the smartest trade for both teams. If you don’t belive me check the salaries and team needs. It Works..

by Dagger!!! on Jan 2, 2011 12:16 AM EST reply actions

I'd rather keep Nick around the way he's playing. Give the homegrown kids a chance.

It’s dissapointing to me when guys want players who’ve been here to be shipped off.

by tw10 on Jan 2, 2011 12:56 AM EST up reply actions

I can see where you're coming from

Nick Young and O.J. Mayo are remarkably similar players. O.J. is just a little better at rebounding, but he’s also younger. I would definitely rather have O.J.

by zl on Jan 2, 2011 1:16 AM EST up reply actions

I don't want a good team

I want a championship team. I don’t care if this team loses 60 games this season as long as they get the gold in the end..

by hystericalmaniac on Jan 2, 2011 1:28 AM EST up reply actions

I don't play with ESPN casino

I do know I would not trade 2 good players for 1 player who is average

by hystericalmaniac on Jan 2, 2011 1:52 AM EST up reply actions

OJ mayo may have the cool name

But he isn’t that good a player. Where this comes from is beyond me. I have watched him play and believe me I know hype where I see it. I will claim he is more hype than real. Nick Young is just as good if not even a better defender than Mayo. I would even claim that Young is the better defender.I will claim that Young is the better shooter. I will claim that the Wiz do not need Mayo because the team has Wall. I will continue to claim that Wall is the far better point guard. So what is it exactly that Mayo brings to the team? He might be better than Hinrich in the long run, other than that I simply do not see what Mayo actually does for the team..

by hystericalmaniac on Jan 2, 2011 2:15 AM EST reply actions

In times of desparation

Something has to be done, the ‘whole culture’ has been entrenched for so long in DC it’s like the Wiz would need to so something very ‘drastic’ in order to win and make a name for itself!

by Big Spoon on Jan 2, 2011 3:28 AM EST reply actions

Actually trade away the bad apple(s) and start with fresh faces, granted NY is doing it up, HOWEVER when it comes to contract resigning years EVERYONE tends to become beast-mode, b/c they’re trying to get paid along the way!

I’m all for getting rid of Blatche (and was joyful and glee was GA rolled out of here as well), however some fans feels as if he’s progressed along the way, I just don’t see it!

by Big Spoon on Jan 2, 2011 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

" Nick Young is just as good if not even a better than" Mayo. HUH????????

You’ve got to be kidding me. First off Mayo is a 2 not a 1. And secondly the fact you said the dude is all hype shows you know nothing about basketball. A player who is all hype dosn’t give 17.8ppg 3.2 apg 3.8 rpg 1.0spg while starting all 82 games the last 2 years in the league, which were his first I might add. And was the second bestplayer on a team that had a better record then the wiz both years in the Western Confrence which is far more competitive then the east. Not To Mention 1 of those years winning 40 games. There is not one statistic in Nick Youngs 4 year Career averages in which he out performed Mayo In any single season. Listen Crack baby leave the basketball talk to us grown-ups.. OK sugar boots

by Dagger!!! on Jan 2, 2011 5:44 AM EST reply actions

if u had checked his stats

u would have seen his ppg has dropped every year hes been in the league…. which means he hasnt improved at all and might actually have regressed since his rookie year

by buklaushomey on Jan 2, 2011 7:35 AM EST up reply actions

Mayo does not and never has impressed mre

by hystericalmaniac on Jan 2, 2011 9:55 AM EST up reply actions

Calling out another person on the forum and using insulting names is kind of a dick move

 What are you 12?

Also, if you compare averages instead of game totals, the players two are fairly comparable. Nick’s a slightly better scorer, but Mayo has an edge in assists and rebounds, though Nick has been doing much better with rebounds lately. So if you’re going to be a dick, at least learn something about basketball.

Nick Young is not a better scorer then Mayo.

He just isn’,t and my point was made buy averages. And his so call regression is more the product to his game being simular to Rudy Gay’s. And the fact my man Rudy didn’t like the fact the grizzles were well on they’re way to becoming Mayo’s team and openly complained about it. I dont hate Nick Young and i love what he’s done this year. but Mayo is better. in every way.
And My Bad everybody .
