Around SBN: The Animated GIFs Of January

Can you guess who made the list? There are a few that will take you down memory lane. Remember how bad the Brian Grant contract was in Miami? Or how Minnesota's voided contract with Joe Smith cost the team $3.5 million and fines and 5 first round draft picks?

Which of these contracts do you believe is the worst?

Gotta go with the Koncak signing

If only because practically everyone knew it was it was a terrible idea when it happened. The modern equivalent would be if someone gave Gortat a $90 million deal after his solid playoff performance filling in for Howard the year before last. Except Gortat is probably better…

Mcilvaine maybe?

Where is Eddie Curry?

Yeah, where is Eddy Curry?

His contract has been one of the NBA’s most toxic for years…

Arenas

“a market research poll found Arenas to be one of the most disliked people in sports” Wow! because Gil made fun of himself by pretending to shoot his teammates with his fingers he’s one of the most disliked people in sports. Wow!

I think it was the guns he brought into the locker room.

It was known for a month that Gil brought guns into the locker room. People lost their minds about the issue once Peter Vecey’s story hit and Gil decided to have some fun with incident.

I don't understand what you are saying.

The poll was taken well after the whole thing started, escalated, and finished.

Are you implying that people might dislike Arenas for making fun of the incident but don’t dislike him for bringing guns into the locker room? I think you are confusing a poll of the public with a poll of David Stern, who reacted following the photo showing Arenas with his finger guns.

by MR on Sep 2, 2010 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

You have it correct. I’m saying that people developed a dislike for Gil based on his reaction to the attention this incident received. Arenas waving his fingers like a gun (which I thought was funny) sybolized to people that he didn’t care about almost having a supposedly gun battle in the locker room.

People didn’t care when it was just the act of bringing guns into the locker room. People started hammering Gil after Vecey’s story broke and Gil didn’t show the right amount of remorse and that is sybolized by that picture.

by Kryp on Sep 2, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

That's absurd.

Nobody (outside of an inner circle) knew that Gil brought in his guns. The Vecey story told everyone about it. The story wasn’t “Athlete makes light of situation” the story was “Athlete/Guns/Locker room”.

Come on MR

MR, I just checked and Gil having guns in the locker room story broke Dec. 24, 2009. The S*** hits the fan on Jan 1, 2010 when the Vecey story breaks. The only point I’m trying to make is that media coverage really turned people against Gil. People saw the pic with the caption this is bad instead of this is funny and Gil (include air quotes) “is one of the most disliked people in sports” now.

I felt compelled to write something about that. I think the survey that was cited has its limitations. I’ll stop short of calling it flawed.

I just saw it. From what I read it does sound a bit flawed.

Five draft picks for that back room deal. That was amazing.

Can you imagine the punishment

once Miami is caught for it’s two year long tampering and collusion with Bosh and James?

by MR on Sep 2, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Sadly, I don’t think the NBA is seriously interested in looking into that. However, they should quietly ask some questions because it appears that this was destined to happen for quite some time.

They certainly aren't going to look into it. In fact I think they'd work pretty hard to cover anything up.

But I’m counting on the Cleveland Plain Dealer, NY Times, SI or a blogger to uncover something.

That could be Prada’s Pulitzer.

Even if the Heat's management is exposed for tampering

What would Stern do? Certainly not break up the revenue-generating monster that is the SuperFriends, and MIA already is out three first-rounders from the Bosh and LBJ deals (not that they’ll really need them for a while anyway).

But even if the Heat wasn’t actually punished if found to have tampered, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to sit back and watch LeBron’s reputation take another drag through the mud?

I don't know.

Stern was masterful at burying the “crooked ref” story, which I foolishly thought would dog the league all year. But he controlled most of the information flow on that one.

I have to think that if there was a huge expose with copies of emails showing tampering that he’d have to do something.
