Trade for J. Crawford?
According to ESPN, Jamal Crawford is going to request a trade from the Atlanta Hawks because they refuse to sign him to a contract extension. I believe this would be a great opportunity for us to trade for an expiring contract, get flexible with our cap space and pick up assets for the future
Wiz give up: Nick Young 1 year remaining 2.6 million in 2010 , Kirk Hinrich 2 years remaining 9 million in 2010
Atlanta gives up: Jamal Crawford 1 year remaining 10.8 in 2010.
IMO this works out well for both teams. Crawford has been a valuable pick up for the Hawks, but as he's shown before he can be a headache when he's not happy in a situation (just ask Chicago, New York and Golden State). This trade would Atlanta the backup point guard they've been looking for, as well as a young SG prospect who may have some value off the bench.
Washington gets a premier shooting guard who can run both gaurd spots without jeopardizing size on defense like Hinrich would. Wall would have two vet guards to learn from (as scary as that sounds considering who those vets are) with enough talent to have a significant chance at success this season. Though Crawford wouldn't necessarily be a long term solution, he could prove a valuable crutch for our young PG in that Crawford is a lights out shooter. Height doesn't always translate to success, but it sure can't hurt. Crawford is an inch or two taller, and has a longer wingspan so we'd have more of a physical and athletic advantage.
The two reasons this trade is unlikely include Grunfield's admiration for Hinrich, and a reluctance that would come with giving up such a high character guy for someone who is forcing his way out. Also, Atlanta may be strongly against losing the cap flexibility they hope to attain after this year. It should be considered though that Hinrichs salary wouldn't seem that bad if he ended up starting for them down the road. Bibby only has a few years left if that, and Hinrich would give Johnson, Williams and Horford a leader at the position who could maybe get them over the Eastern Semi hump. Who knows about Nick Young, he could emerge as a solid role player and help ease the scoring lag they'll experience without Crawford in ATL.
And even though Grunfield likes Hinrich a lot, he would have to be heavily tempted to get 10 million off the books next year while also acquiring a pick. Atlanta only gets minor salary relief this year and get money added for 2011 so I'd assume they wouldn't want to pay a first rounder who wouldn't necessarily contribute this year. We could package that pick with our pick to move up in the draft.

I actually don't mind it
At first, I thought it was horrible, but it makes perfect sense. We save a lot of money and clear up some minutes in the backcourt (a three guard rotation is perfectly fine, especially if all of them can play either spot), while Atlanta finally gets a decent defensive point guard, adds a shooter, and gets value for Crawford.
By the way, you’d have to be crazy to give Crawford more than three years on an extension, regardless of which team you are. Guy’s 30 and yes, I know he’s big and can shoot, but what makes him borderline unguardable at times is that he’s quick enough that he can free himself up for a jumper any time he wants one.

when you put it that way...
it makes sense to me but I’m still scared of what Nick Young might POTENTIALLY do to us if we trade him.
I say scratch J-Crawford(but I like the idea) and get Xavier Henry. J-Crawford is better but Xavier would be in support of us going young with our players.
I like Jamal Crawford...dude is a baller...clutch shooter, MAD handles, good size
but i’d honestly think Kirk Hinirch fits in better…better on D, good shot selection. There’s only so many shots to go around.
Plus I’d rather keep Nick another year…we’ve had him this long might as well keep him around.
Arenas, Blatche, and Wall should be able to handle the scoring load…not only by making shots themselves but by creating shots for others.
If we we were a team like the Spurs—great defensively but not much firepower on offense, then I’d love to get the best bench scorer in the league…
Can't stand him
Think last year was a major fluke year for him shooting wise (check out the disparity on some of his percentages, especially from 10-15 feet and from three). I also think Mike Woodson always gets the most out of guys like Crawford (note how Flip Murray had by far his best year in 2008/09). In other words, I think he’s overrated.
Though I actually like your trade suggestion because he has an expiring contract.
Too bad Mike Woodson couldn't get more out of Marvin WIlliams....
but i guess his iso offense makes guys feel like they’re the man?
honestly his offense is one reason i never liked people bashing Joe Johnson…
Makes no sense
Why would we go after Kirk just to trade him away for an expiring contract? Why would we want yet another one dimensional gunner?
The Melo angle is really the only way it makes any sense.
I guess because Crawford is more tradeable
But I agree – it’s kind of pointless to acquire a player only because they have trade value.
We did get a decent pick for him, though.
If we trade for Crawford, we pay 10 million dollars this year (although we could still trade him to a team like Boston or Denver at some point) and give up a low efficiency guard who we might not even re-sign for a year of Crawford and a first rounder. It’s really not that bad, especially if we can then flip Crawford for someone who won’t play (Peja? KMart? Someone on Boston? TJ Ford?) and another first rounder.

If we got Crawfor AND a first rounder...
then I’d definitely have to think hard about that one. I’m not gonna lie though, I like Nick. I want to see him succeed HERE, not somewhere else.
I'm the same way
So torn about NY, he’s my favorite player to watch and he seems like such a good dude, but when I think about him objectively, he just doesn’t seem to be working here. Even if he got it together, he’s not going to be able to get minutes here as long as Gil’s around, even though he probably complements Wall better than Arenas does.

No no no no no no
Jamal Crawford is a cancer. Yes I’m going purely off feelings but bad things just happen around him. He isn’t the type that makes others better around him. I really like Kirk Hinrich and would never give him up for Jamal. Kirk, from what I’ve seen, is a team player. He won’t piss and moan if his minutes get reduced, he won’t drop out of the game if he can’t make a shot, he takes shots in the flow of the team etc. etc. The best way I can describe it right now is Jamal is the type to make a 3 then come back down and take another 3 with 2 defenders on him just because he made one. Kirk is the type that can make a 3, then have the self control not to jack up another one as a “heat check”. I don’t like Jamals type of player at all, only so many people on a team can shine and we have Gilbert, Wall, Blatche among others that need to have the space to do their thing. Kirk will fall in the background for the better of the team, Jamal won’t.
Think, why do all the teams he ends up on seem to suck?
Every team this kid goes on is trash. He’s doomed to be in limbo between superstar and role-player. Think how does a guy who can score 20ppg still coming off the bench? cough Antwan Jamison cough Caron Butler These guys just suck on teams, that’s why they always go out in the first round if they’re getting 20 minutes. Atlanta has the most retarded roster in the NBA. I knew they would collapse in the playoffs because their team is composed of 3 Jamal Crawfords. On the nba.com playoff brackets I had Atlanta beating Milwaukee in 6 (would’ve gave Milwaukee upset if Bogut was healthy) and losing to the Magic in 4. After I called that Magic upset I went into a tie for 3rd on the website finished in like a tie for 20 damn Boston. I also called Boston upsetting Cleveland that put me in a tie for first :-( and Spurs upsetting Mavericks. While I am saying this to brag a bit, it’s the only type of credentials I can come up with, and the point is these players just don’t mesh with other people and always end up stupidly overrated. It’s a miracle Gilbert actually went anywhere with them in the playoffs.

They don't regular season suck
But they playoff suck consistently.
Well now you're moving the goalposts
Hard to disregard that Jamal had his best year playing for a good team.
And Atlanta was decent the two years before this one
Milwaukee was really scrappy and their defense is great against iso-heavy offenses, while Orlando had the one guy in the league who they had literally no one to guard.

You mean the LeBron Squad
That beat the Hawks 4-0 in the semifinals last year?
by Ball with Wall on Sep 4, 2010 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Boston would have been their ideal match up
Maybe Chicago, too, since they don’t have a great lowpost scorer. A team with really solid team defense – as opposed to just random stoppers – would be the best for them, or a team that can be overwhelmed with their athleticism. I think they’d look a lot better if they were playing in the West, those teams match up a lot better with them.

I agree
They probably would’ve looked better against Boston. However, they should already be above Chicago’s level seeing as they barely got the 8th seed.

To be fair to that result
Atlanta had a ton of injuries – Horford was banged up and Marvin Williams was too.
Ah
Though I still can’t give Atlanta a pass for that since they still had their main core guys. LeBron was actually trying last year too and Cleveland won every game by double digits.

No to Crawford
I would rather have Young for one more year. As someone said above, if we are going to trade him, trade him for Xavier, maybe even throw in Booker for him.
I would do that trade
Jamal Crawford wants a contract extension. He does not deserve one. If the Hawks are smart, they won’t cave. Hopefully the Wizards are equally smart.
So, we trade for Crawford, allow him to jack up shots, score 21 a game on 38% shooting for 45 games, then trade him to a contender for a 1st round pick. Hopefully he shoots us into the high lottery, and we have more cap space heading into the 2011 lockout.

this is more of what I was thinking
Let him fill a role. Plus watching him and Wall I believe would be fun to watch.
Personally, though, I’d still rather trade for Xavier Henry. Adding Henry this year would allow us to move on from hoping for another prospect next draft and allow us to get this rebuild under way. Just my opinion but I think it makes sense.
wouldnt it be great
if we got henry and barely missed the playoffs, had an exciting season, and then pull of chicago and win another 1st pick? lol, it would also be great to sneak into 8th seed and upset miami but those are just my dreams

seriously, how amazing would that series be, Wiz-Miami?
I’m not delusional, I know we would not win. But, wouldn’t the crowd be unbelievable for game 3? Don’t you think we could at least stretch it to 6? I can’t wait to chant “De-Lon-Te! De-Lon-Te!”
