Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Last night there was a pick-up game played at Verizon Center on our practice court. There were many NBA players in attendance and a few NBA All-Stars played as well. I stumbled into watching purely by accident.

Gilbert Arenas played last night. It was a very good evening of basketball. Gil - our All-Star - matched up against another NBA All-Star. It was quite a show and quite a display of talent.

I won’t comment yet on Gilbert or who was in the gym last night but suffice to say Gilbert looked trim, fit and explosive. His shot was sweet and he did one left handed dunk that was something to see. It had everyone talking. I was impressed and am happy.

Ted Leonsis. This sounds exciting.

UPDATE: Looks like Chris Paul was there, along with several former Hornets.

Doubt that Ted would say anything bad about a guy he might be trying to trade at some point...

But still good to hear that Gilbert may be back to his old self. Can’t wait for the season to start!!

yeah probably a fair amount of hot air i this -

can’t imagine ted saying ‘saw gil play last night, man, he was fat and limping and still had those stupid guns with him’
but even my cynical side can’t force me to totally dismiss this. nothing would make me happier than for 2010-2011 to be a gilbert arenas redemption year. or at least a kwame brown redemption year.

Remember how Gil was durnking on people at Barry Farms' last year

did anyone ever see him dunk on someone in the regular season?

That was at Barry Farms

Where there’s literally no defense played

He doesn't need to dunk on anybody

during the regular season. He can shoot, get to the rim and finish. That’s enough.

this has me giddy...

if Wall and Arenas kill it together I might even want to keep Gil for the remainder of his terrible contract. You think maybe he would take a paycut at some point? not much, but enough for us to sign a big piece if needed.

by jeffco01 on Aug 25, 2010 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

Gil would absolutely take a pay cut if he thought the team could make noise in the postseason.

a) Now that Lebron, D-Wade, and Bosh have each done it to improve their chances, who wants to be the poster child for the max contract deal that guarantees you kill your team and don’t win a title?

b) Gil’s got plenty to prove and if the team and new regime stands behind him now, they can legitimately say he owes them some flexibility in return for the second chance he’s been given

c) He’s getting older and is smart enough to know he can’t dominate by himself the way he once thought he could / did, ever so briefly.

Little thing called a "union".

Unions where the players have guaranteed contracts do not take kindly to their players volunteering to restructure.

Football players do it all the time but their contracts are not guaranteed.

by malharden on Aug 25, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

If they are that good together (Wall and Arenas)

We will still have enough room to offer a max contract to someone in the next year or two, and we’d have our new and improved Big Three.

by DT711 on Aug 25, 2010 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

We need the cap space for future paydays

In the coming years McGee, Blatche and Wall are gonna need to get paid, if we dont want to go into luxury we need to save some money.

Actually i don´t think we need a max player (like melo) next year, we need to draft another stud next year (maybe have to move up through a trade if we get to the post season or high lottery) to grow with Wall, AB and Javale. No matter how good Arenas will be this season, his contract is hurting our future as he gets older.

by Dutch Hoopfan on Aug 26, 2010 4:56 AM EDT up reply actions

This is good.

I hope we don’t trade him before the season….I love a player with a chip on his shoulder.

by Krobify on Aug 25, 2010 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

It was me.

I was there.

I kept getting JaVale to double team me from the weakside and leave his guy open for dunks.

Sometimes just for kicks I would body up on Yi and watch him dribble it off his foot.

Just let us know that the mystery opponent may have been Chris Paul, who twittered about being at the Verizon Center.

We may find out which stars played in that game if they’re in attendance at tonight’s Mystics playoff game. That being said, it’s great to hear from Ted that Arenas has been working hard this offseason and has seen some of his play, even if by accident.

by thewiz06 on Aug 25, 2010 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Great to hear

Question – does Wiz still try and trade Arenas at the deadline if he and Wall are tearing it up???

by gilsix on Aug 25, 2010 2:11 PM EDT reply actions

Nope.

Ted is a good businessman.

A winning Arenas on a winning Wizards team puts fannies in the seats and puts the team on ESPN.

That would be “good for business” as they say.

The last thing I need is excitement about this season.

God do I want to get my hopes up, but it’s scary. But this does nothing but hype me up.

I wonder who organized the event? Were all Wizards invited?

Extremely excited for this season.

Yeah John Wall awesome! But deep down in my heart, I guess my basketball fantasy, consists of a sem-successful season, with a healthy focused Arenas. Shutting haters up with more amazing game play, surrounded with a new youthful-talented cast, and new management.

Well this seems an all pretty good base-setting for that bball fantasy of mine.

I agree. It's great to have Wall and I think he'll be great,

but Gil is still my favorite player and I’d love to see him prove everybody wrong and get back to an all-star level.

Come on now...

this is like baseball players in the offseason claiming they have a new pitch or are “in the best shape of my life!” I’ll wait for the regular season, thanks.

I tend to agree with Charles Barkley on this

“I think they need to trade Gilbert for the simple fact of all the baggage that will be around the team. You know, Wall’s a young kid, it’s his team to go forward, but there’ll be so much negative publicity around Gilbert, I think they need to make a clean break and let it become the John Wall Era.
(…)
“I mean, I like Gilbert Arenas, I think he’s a really good player, but I think that’s the first thing that people are gonna think about. And John Wall is the future of the Wizards. They don’t need to be involved in any of that negative karma. I think they should trade Gilbert, if they asked me my personal opinion.”

Listen, if you can play, they can always find something for you," Barkley responded. “Everybody in the NBA’s making a lot of money nowadays. Like I said, they need to just make a clean break. Somebody will trade for Gilbert Arenas — he’s a hell of a player — but I just think from an organizational standpoint, they need to turn that page.”
