What issues can Wizards fans all agree on?
Forgive me for being in an abstract mood today, but with little going on in the dead part of the NBA schedule, I figure I'd pose this question to everyone as a discussion-starter.
I've been thinking a lot about how fans of any sports team disagree with so many things involving the team. Everyone is a fan of the team, and everyone wants the team to succeed. Beyond that, though? It's hard to find things that pretty much everyone is unanimous about, whether it's something as detailed as a coach's offensive scheme or as supplementary as the concessions at the team's arena. We could get into a long disagreement about pretty much every issue surrounding the team if we wanted to do so.
That said, there have to be some things that we are unanimous about, right? If there weren't, it'd be tough to bring fans together. Sure, we all want the team to succeed, but that doesn't seem like enough to create the kind of community we're trying to create here and elsewhere. There have to be some more specific areas where we can find common ground.
My question to all of you is this: what are those areas? What can we all agree on as Wizards fans?
A couple that immediately come to my mind:
- John Wall should be a very good NBA player.
- LeBron James is a jerk.
- Ted Leonsis is a breath of fresh air.
- We can't imagine a local broadcast without Steve Buckhantz and Phil Chenier.

The D-League
The Wizards should make better use of it.
I think he means
move the D-League team to B-More.
And I agree – I think Wizards fans could better support a D-League team if it were closer to Washington….
Baltimore would be Ok…
Fairfax (Patriot Center) would be better.

Wizards D-League Team at Patriot Center would rock.
Mason’s Intramural teams would have ‘next’ every night.
Earl Boykins should put out an instructional video on ball control
If nothing else, he’s had enough practice…

This Transition Period
is an exciting time. Wall and McGee look ready to accept big roles in the upcoming season, Blatche is looking to build on his breakout and we have a score of talented guys trying to prove something this year – Thornton, Howard, Yi and Young.

At least make the "W" look like the old double "L"s with the hands reaching for a ball
The franchise should have kept that as a trademark of sorts…

Bullets Forever
Yeah, there is a problem with the “Baby Blue” Color and the horrible sounding of “Wizards”.
We can also agree that we are the best hoop fans worldwide.
Here are some. Anyone please chime in if they disagree.
• Team defense needs to improve drastically.
• The Wiz are in rebuilding mode but not full blow-it-up-start-from-scratch mode.
• The team is counting on drastic improvement from our young front line.
• The team should improve the medical staff.
• We are thin/young at center.
• Wall needs to work on his jumper
• Young is nearing the end of his chances
• Javale needs to get stronger
• Arenas needs to play better defense
• We are in the league’s toughest division
• The Wizards have a promising 5+ year outlook
• The Wizards will win more games than the Redskins

With reference to the front line
Yes, we need improvement, but we have a fair amount of depth and a ridiculous amount of potential up front.
And after all, they can’t all be Kwame.
Redskins...heh.

I agree with it all except...
Imagining a broadcast without Steve Buckhantz. I dream of him not being there. I’ve been watching games my whole life 30+ years and every time I hear “And just like that…” (you fill in how we just blew a lead) I want to break something. I’m as big of a homer as everyone else here, but Buck ain’t my man, and Phil isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed either… allow my to paraphrase “We can allow them to score points, as long as we score more”
Come on now. This is the nations capital, an intellectual city, we should have a higher bar than the tea party nation out there. Mike we need a new announcer, that’s your foot in the door, then it’s just a matter of time before you can move into the play by play and give your insights during the game. Come on man work with me here. I can’t hear “And just like that the Bullets have lost there 10 point lead and are down by 20.”
But everything else I agree with completely… oh and Gil is gonna tear it up this year oooohhhh
John Skywalker (cause he is going to save us all from the evil empire of the Pollin era trading our youth for big old vets. I think he was loosing at poker to the Pistons)
Agent 9 (new number same old amazing game)
Howard (prove yourself son)
Bulletproof (I’m a MAN)
Big Wookie (growing and gaining wait everyday, asthma ain’t holding me down no mo’)
Peace you’ll enjoy the weather.
Le Bullet - where being a fan isn't easy, but at least we have lots of cool scars to show for it.
I love Buckhantz
but my entry for everyone to agree on…
JaVale McGee having the most potential of any center in the league.
You don't like Buck and Phil?
Phil’s pretty measured and never prone to hyperbole, and Buck is Buck. Local announcers are homers – just how it is.
Compared to many crews around the league, I think we’re lucky.

We are very lucky, I had the NBA package for DirecTV
so I watched all the games on the team’s local channels. There are some really horrible announcers and color guys out there. We are very fortunate. Buck and Phil are very smart guys, always keep it real and entertaining. Knicks, Hawks, Warriors, Kings are some of the ones I remember being terrible.

Warriors?
Golden State’s crew is outstanding – pretty much everyone I’ve talked to agrees.
Give me a few minutes and I’ll come up with a personal ranking for all 30.
Ok
Here’s my list:
Golden State – Jim Barnett’s the best color guy in the business, even if their PbP guy is annoying
New Jersey – Marv Albert is involved
Oklahoma City – Definite homers, but I love their attention to the nuances of the game
LA Clippers – By far the funniest crew out there
Milwaukee – Jim Pashke is great, and their color guy always teaches me something new
Orlando – Matt Goukas has really gotten better over the years
Dallas – Nothing flashy, just nuts and bolts
Washington – As noted above
Minnesota – They use advanced stats a lot – very similar to the Bucks crew
LA Lakers – Stu Lantz is great. Joel Meyers annoys me, but works for many others
Indiana – Quinn Buckner and Clark Kellogg are both great
Philadelphia – Meh
Boston – I get how Heinsohn gets on people’s nerves, but Gorman’s great, and having lived in New England for school, they definitely reflect the fanbase
Utah – Pretty boring crew – their color guy can barely speak
New York – Clyde’s a lot like Tommy, but less amusing.
Charlotte – Dell Curry’s solid, but their play by play guy annoys me
Houston – Their play-by-play guy is great, but Clyde Drexler is awful
Phoenix – Depends who’s there – Eddie Johnson is good, Scott Williams is brutal
Atlanta – Dominique is a great player, but a really bad color commentator.
Detroit – Their announcer’s voice annoys me
Miami – See above
Memphis – Such blatant homers
Toronto – Matt Devlin’s voice annoys me, and Leo Rautins is a major homer
San Antonio – Sean Elliot is so nauseating – always blaming the other team for everything
New Orleans – Probably a little low, but their color guy annoys me
Sacramento – Grant Napear’s the worst
Portland – Mike Rice is the worst
Chicago – Stacey King is the worst
Denver – Scott Hastings is the worse
Cleveland – Thankfully, I’ll never have to hear Austin Carr go “LEBRONNNNN, THE KINGGGG, GET THAT WEAK STUFF OUTTA HERE! IN THE QQQQQQ”
I like Walt Frazier’s humorously bizarre references in the Knicks games. Players are always “percolating”, their shots are “beguiling”. etc. I think he reads a thesaurus before every game, thinking of words he could use at opportune moments.
by satchmore on Aug 24, 2010 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
yeah i get why people are annoyed by him
but i actually think he’s pretty funny, and does it all with a little wink and nod that he knows he’s being absurd, kind of like walton used to do.

by little stevie colter on Aug 24, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions
I think both of you must not listen to him much.
He doesn’t read a thesaurus before every game…he read a thesaurus ONCE IN HIS LIFE and keeps repeating the same inane, overly wordy, and frankly embarrassing phrases. The pause and emphasis he places on these words indicates to me that they aren’t part of his normal vocabulary, but rather words he learned so he could sound intelligent. To me the effect is the opposite of what he intends.
In addition he has essentially nothing of substance to add, with little or no insight or useful analysis.
by MR on Aug 24, 2010 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah I think he doesn't take himself too seriously
Which is why he can be amusing if you also don’t take him too seriously.
Again
It’s fine for 2 games a year.
Try it for 40-60.
You won’t find it that amusing.
by MR on Aug 24, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions
And really he doesn't add any insight or basketball analysis
so what is the point of some clown tossing out random words from a thesaurus? It doesn’t add to the viewer’s understanding of the sport, the play, the players, or the in game situation. Once you (quickly) tire of the flowery language there is really nothing of value that he adds to the broadcast.
Humor is value
But yeah, I will agree that he’s not Walton – Walton manages to be insightful while also being ridiculous. I did see several Knicks games (not 40-60, but not 2) this year due to SBNation.com duties, and I guess I couldn’t work up the same anger as you. Maybe it’s because he worked with Mike Breen, and Breen is good. I dunno.
annoying
I find his tone to be highly annoying, especially when we are loosing, and we loose a lot. With all the new era air in town I’d like a new play-by-play announcer to complete the hat trick. It’s all subjective, and for me his voice is linked to our failure of the past.
Le Bullet - where being a fan isn't easy, but at least we have lots of cool scars to show for it.

+1
Mel and Phil on HTS were great — some of my earliest enduring memories of being a sports fan. Buck can grate on one’s nerves a bit, especially when he starts getting into that resigned, cynical tone when the team is about to pull defeat from the jaws of victory (as they are wont to do).
That said, him screaming “DAGGER!” when Gil would launch a walkaway bomb at the buzzer from what seemed like the half court line? That’s gonna stay with me for life, just like Frank Herzog saying “Touchdown, Washington Redskins” in the late 80’s/early 90’s (I seriously just got chills as I recalled that)
I don't like comparing
Just because everyone else sucks isn’t a good argument for our guys sucking less. I work in production and keep an eye out for talented beings all the time… so as I can say this is the best blog in the nba, I can say Buck is the most annoying play-by-play announcer.
When he speaks sometimes it’s like our failure is inevitable, and why would we ever think different. I believe this comes from watching us loose for sooo many years and I would like to listen to a fresh voice while watching us WIN!!!
Le Bullet - where being a fan isn't easy, but at least we have lots of cool scars to show for it.
Wait, huh?
I get that it’s not like we’re grading on a curve here, but if you don’t want to compare Buck to other PbP guys, I’m not sure how you can say he’s the most annoying.
he is the most annoying announcer that I have to listen to every game
I don’t care about all the other guys, that’s another world with another team. I’m talking about Le Bullets. I got so much love for this club that it hurts like a Dagger :)
Le Bullet - where being a fan isn't easy, but at least we have lots of cool scars to show for it.
I like our guys.
Especially better than a lot of the National media. I guess they don’t suit your taste, but I think they are a good duo.
I will take Buck in a heartbeat...
…over Sonny, Sam & Frank and over fracking Rob Dibble or Ray Knight.
Gilbert Arenas is the most important player on the Wizards by far...
How well he plays will greatly impact the team’s competitiveness and record.
He is the straw that stirs the drink.
Is
Over the remaining life of Gil’s contract, we will either win because of his performance or fall because of it. John Wall is not good enough to consistently lead us to victory in spite of Gilbert.
Not yet anyway.
Reports coming out Erik Dampier to be released
I really wish we hadn’t made that trade for YI Jianlin now. If we had just kept Quinton Ross we would have at least a guy who plays a little perimeter D and he’s 3 MILLION dollars cheaper. Can we release Hilton Armstrong?? I know we signed him for a 1 yr minimum so I am assuming that means we can’t cut him without cap ramifications. Dampier is the perfect veteran center that we were all clamoring for earlier in the off season. He’s a guy who will bang with McGee in practice to toughen him up and someone who can step in and play close to 15 minutes a night and still keep McGee’s minutes at 30+ a night. He’s a banger that will also compliment McGee. It would have been awesome to get him at a 1 yr deal at something like 3 mil. However, at this point in his 14 yr career he would probably be looking to sign with a contender. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him sign with Miami at a 1 yr 2 mil deal. Would have loved to have McGee, Dampier, and N’daye as our centers.. Dampier probably could have helped N’daye as well.
The Wizards should re-locate to Connecticut
