nice

thanks for the vid. Despite having relatively little experience playing the game, he seems pretty natural on the low block.

by sweet_as on Aug 20, 2010 5:04 AM EDT reply actions

yeah he really seems like he has a soft touch

i hope he becomes a stronger al jefferson
and i like his blocks, he doesnt really leave his feet until the shot is right about to go up, seems like he can be a pretty good defender

Wow

I mean, I know it’s a highlight reel, and I know NOTHING about this guy, but….I’d say McGee is lucky Seraphin won’t be competing for a spot on USA basketball as well.

And interesting the Bulls fans at the Garden boo’d his selection. I’ve heard of players getting boo’d at the draft – famously McNabb of course, but I thought McNabb’s was notable because it was relatively uncommon for players to get boo’d at the draft. It’s not like it was the 2nd pick – it was 17! Sort of awkward with the guy right there, probably expecting cheers, instead hears boos. Weird.

by mogoman on Aug 20, 2010 7:10 AM EDT reply actions

It happens some but it was wierd

Something tells me the Bulls fans will be upset about the pick in years to come. Not upset that they picked him, but that the Bulls traded him away.

by Danyon Rome on Aug 20, 2010 7:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah you could be right...

Fly in from Chi-town to see the draft only to have your friends txt you that they traded the pick moments before the selection. I’d probably boo too. Hopefully someone told him that in America booing is a sign of great respect.

by mogoman on Aug 20, 2010 7:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, almost no international guys are cheered

I remember knick fans booing gallo, and now he’s a favorite. I think seraphin will become similarly loved among wiz fans

I wonder

if they weren’t booing “France” and not Seraphin. there was also a USA chant in there. I don’t think it was specifically Bulls fans at the Garden that we heard.

by Jheiser3 on Aug 20, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I like Seraphin because he has actual post moves – though he’ll need to continue to develop those if he’s to be effective in the NBA. His post moves put JaVale McGee to shame – though maybe that’s not saying much.

That 15-foot jumper is nice, but something tells me it’s an illusion of the highlight reel.

by satchmore on Aug 20, 2010 9:04 AM EDT reply actions

Wait, let me try that again:

“That 15-foot jumper is nice, but something tells me it’s as ephemeral as seraphim.”

by satchmore on Aug 20, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

That’s a little highbrow for BulletsForever, Satch. You can only class up this joint so much.

by disgrunted on Aug 20, 2010 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

i disagree

please, keep it coming.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Aug 20, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Actually, I think that should’ve read, “ethereal as seraphim”, rather than “ephemeral”.. the word ethereal carrying the dual connotation of something that is heavenly yet lacks material substance, much like the ether. That is what Serphin’s 15-foot jumper looks like.

Speaking of genius wordplay, I’m coining a new term for the upcoming season: “Wallright”. As in, “Ooh, did you see that shot? That’s Wallright.”

by satchmore on Aug 20, 2010 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Too highbrow for BulletsForever?!? Nay, I say!

Highlight reals can be deceiving in some ways, but there’s no question this guy has the body and athleticism to excel in the NBA. Some of his blocks in particular are just ridiculous.

I can’t wait to see him match up against Dwight Howard (game 1!!!). I’m not going to say it’ll be pretty but fascinating nonetheless.

by Johnnie Futbol on Aug 20, 2010 9:53 AM EDT reply actions

He's better than the scouting report..

…but still needs to put on 20 pounds in the weight room.

by Izman on Aug 20, 2010 10:37 AM EDT reply actions

he's 6'9 260

you want him playing at 280? he looks perfect to me.

by Jheiser3 on Aug 20, 2010 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

6'9" without shoes works for me

and….260 is plenty. He automatically is our heaviest player.

by gilsix on Aug 20, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought it was up around 278?

Anyway, he could stand to turn some of that weight into muscle…

Oh, and McGee should be right around 260 with his reported offseason weight gain. I believe Blatche is too…

by jones-y on Aug 20, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Disagree, hes already very ripped for a young big
Anyway, he could stand to turn some of that weight into muscle…

“He stands around 6-9 without shoes, has a huge wingspan, and sports a chiseled 268-pound frame.”

There are conflicting things on the net, but he’s measured at 6’9" WITH shoes, but whatever… the guy clearly plays bigger than his size. Strong, long arms, and with some hops.

by Johnnie Futbol on Aug 20, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

His arms look really long, too

I guess Seraphin is our enforcer in the paint. Let’s see what he can do. Atheletic freaks from France have turned out ok in this league.

by gilsix on Aug 20, 2010 10:38 AM EDT reply actions

i like what i see!

Three things I noticed:
1. Very huge hands—to grip the ball and use on a beautiful looking hook shot
2. Soft touch around the rim—finishes very fluidly. Looks pretty skilled
3. High release pt on the j—looks very difficult to block.

Looks like we have ourselves a nice prospect here folks :)

Another KS interview to French leading sport radio ...

http://www.rmc.fr/editorial/121886/seraphin-avoir-du-temps-de-jeu/

Drafted by Chicago then traded to Washington, Kevin Seraphin is getting ready for its debut in the NBA. The Guyanese was the guest of RMC Sports summer. He talks about his goals for his debut in the big league: "I would like to get minutes playing. In order to get stats (one) should remain on the ground. Once I will get playing time thanks to my defense, my rebounding, we will see for the stats. The priority is to have playtime. Why not the rookie game but it is far … "conceded Seraphin.

The dude isn’t exactly planning to play in the D league; plus he was supposed to be a starter in the French world cup squad … ok I’m French but … :)

by kyleMaroc on Aug 20, 2010 10:48 AM EDT reply actions

From this interview and others it seems he likes to speak about defense.

I like the get minutes through defense and rebounding and the stats will come next way of looking at it.

by Johnnie Futbol on Aug 20, 2010 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

he knows his game

As he said in his draft interview (first pound) BANG. And then the rest will come.

by Jheiser3 on Aug 20, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

The fist pound is pretty sweet.

Maybe he’ll do it after blocks – Mutombo style (also 260 lbs, btw).

by mogoman on Aug 20, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm waiting for the first time he punishes Lebron on a screen

Him and Booker. Let’s get a little “enforcer” mentality going on this squad.

by sierradave on Aug 21, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

great

I think he means in order to get stats you have to stay on the “floor”.

love that he’s been drilled on a fundamental of the game: play defense and rebound you’ll get playing time. then worry about the rest.

by Jheiser3 on Aug 20, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

My observations

Very good athleticism for a guy who is a self described banger!

Good footwork. He has the beginnings of a good post offensive game, with solid fundamentals, but he’s going to need to adjust to the NBA’s bigger stronger faster and more athletic bigs. In addition he looks good converting offensive rebounds into points, understanding how to maneuver himself to create space and get off a shot.

Soft touch around the basket, on both finishing post moves and putting back offensive rebounds.

Looks to have the beginnings of a solid 12-15 foot jumper. High release point, lots of lift on the shot, solid mechanics. We will see. Highlight reels can be deceptive…

Helpside shot blocking looks very good! He seems to have a knack for it (excellent timing and anticipation).

There’s not much to rate him on defensively, aside from the helpside shot blocking, so its good to hear him talk about his desire to play defense. Its hard not to be high on the guy watching these highlights, but I’m sure one could assemble an equally impressive set of ‘low-lights’ lol…

by jones-y on Aug 20, 2010 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

Nice summary...

Just watched it again and would add:
- Says 2009-2010 at the beginning. Assuming that’s a single season, it means the dude has an 8 and a half minute highlight reel from a single season. Long enough for Javale to down two protein shakes as he watches his new competition.
- Goes around Roger Federer like he’s standing still at 5:17
- I actually like the music choice…

by mogoman on Aug 20, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

yes!

I thought I was the only one really diggin’ the music track! Reminiscent of a Pete Rock or Nicolay type of instrumental (for all my hip hop fans at BF!).

Regarding the actual topic, Seraphin looks very intriguing indeed. He seems like a legit banger but with very soft hands which is that rare combination you’d want in a big. But does he seem more like a below-the-rim type of player or is it just me? I mean, offensively, he seems to have that (dare I say?) Jamison/Zach Randolph kind of touch around the basket BUT with the occasional nasty throwdown.

If he develops that jumper a little bit more, our frontcourt looks very promising for years to come.

by geechy_suede on Aug 20, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm really starting to like this pick..

the success of foreign picks is always hard to project, but he seems like he’s got a very good head on his shoulders. I like his talk of playing defense and rebounding, leading to him playing more minutes. His jump hook seems like pure money, he might have a hard time getting that shot off against freak atheletes like Dwight Howard but against other PF’s, he should be able to put it up every now and then. He’s also more athletic than he might appear on first glance. He’s definitely a banger, and definitely a tough inside presence; him and Booker indefinitely boost our tenacity on the frontline

by Tdav on Aug 20, 2010 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

I am so glad people are warming up to Seraphim and Booker...

and I hope it works out… Management really seems to have taken the draft opportunities seriously.

by khrabb on Aug 20, 2010 3:40 PM EDT reply actions

Obviously these are just highlights but I'm pretty impressed

with some of his post moves. Good footwork, already has better low post moves than JaVale. I also like his high release point of his jump shot. That will help him out a bit, reminds me of KG’s high release jumper.

by PhenomenalSwag on Aug 21, 2010 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

I was definitely impressed with the fluidity of his post moves

I thought I had read somewhere that he has a raw post game. If that’s raw, I don’t know what to call JaVale’s play under the basket.

"I'm George. George McFly. I'm your density... I mean, your destiny."

by mr. 91 on Aug 21, 2010 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

Dope ass background music off J. Dilla’s cd.

Did we sign this guy? If so im uber-excited. We def need big men as we already have a backcourt offensive push.

by Unxpekted on Aug 21, 2010 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

He does no weights apparently

If that is true I cannot wait to see what he will develop into the next couple years with conditioning. I think there is a credible chance that he can dethrone McGee for the starting center spot if McGee has shown zero defensive improvement and takes too many ill advised shots. I feel kinda old fashioned I want my centers to be enforcers on both ends of the floor.

by Kend3zy on Aug 21, 2010 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

I was thinking the same thing, but I think the only time he’d be a starter is as a PF. He’s definitely got the bulk and athleticism to matchup with C’s in this league but not the length. In the situation you said (McGee not improving as expected), if Andray picks up the intensity on the defensive end, I think Seraphin could start alongside of him with them switching between C/PF duties depending on the matchup

by Tdav on Aug 22, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I was also thinking that.

But in terms of size Seraphin should be 6’10"/6’10.5" with shoes and 268 pounds which is good enough size for the center position. Also from looking at the tape he would be a good compliment to Blatche on offense and defense. There are plenty of minutes at the center spot up for the taking with Seraphin’s only competition being McGee and Armstrong (which it remains to be seen if he is remotely useful).

by Kend3zy on Aug 23, 2010 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not so sure exactly how tall he is though. If he’s 6’10 or any taller, then he should be able to play C no problem. But by reading his various reported measurements online on different credible websites leading up to the draft, I’m lead to believe he’s a little closer to 6’9 than 6’10, with shoes on.
