The Bulls have been offering forward James Johnson in trades all offseason, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Looks like both of these guys are in unique situations. They are young, promising players who have had some limited success when they've been given playing time. But they play for teams who are not in rebuilding mode and who would like to shed some salary by getting rid of there contracts.
Rudy Fernandez reminds me a lot of Manu Ginobli in both negative and positive ways. He is a streaky player who can take over a game but when he's not shooting well the rest of his game noticeably declines. He would fit with us because he's a combo wing player who could play the 2 or the 3. The guy has some range but again his shot is streaky, and he's got an explosive first step to the rim. What I like about Rudy is that he seems to have a lot of important intanglibles. He can adjust to contact and finish around the rim regularly. He has shown great court vision, setting up team mates on the break and at times he shown defense can be a strength of his. But it's all about putting it together for him.
I haven't watched as much of James Johnson but from what I've seen of him during his time at Wake and during a few summer league games, I think he could be a star. He has all the tools; he's got a bruisers body at 6'8" 245. He's got range out to the 3, but does have an excellent mid range jumper. He can handle the rock (even though we shouldn't need him to) as a point forward. He's also a tough match up; he can take bigger forwards out to the perimeter with his range, but can also post up some smaller wing players and finish around the basket. The biggest issue with this guy is mental toughness. He visibly becomes frustrated when he messes up, and that usually leads to more screw ups. That and he must re-enforce some basic fundamentals that he may not have had to develop before because of his size and strength.
I know we have a few trade exceptions as well as young trade bait (Young, Thorton, Seraphin), but what do you guys think it would take to land one of the two. You think either team would be desperate enough to dump either one for cap space or draft picks?
