John Wall's Jump Shot

I don't have much to say except that it seems that to a true point guard this is something that can be learned.  I stated last night, I would much rather Wall need to learn how to shoot than learn how to lead.  I think of the top 11 point guards in the league right now:

Deron Williams - learned to shoot in NBA (was a liability when he entered league)

Chris Paul - learned to shoot in NBA (was a liability when he entered league)

Rajon Rondo - Still cant shoot

Derrick Rose -learning to shoot

Steve Nash -shooter

Chauncey Billups -shooter

Russel Westbrook -Developing shot (range was a liability when he entered league)

Jason Kidd - still cant shoot

Brandon Jennings -Shooter

Tony Parker - developed into a rhythm shooter (could not shoot when he entered the league\

Out of the top 11 point guards in the league only three are true shooters.  The rest have either worked on their shot or are resourceful despite not having a shot.  the most important thing to me is John Wall has the 'it' factor.  Jump shot will come.

This represents the view of the user who wrote the FanPost, and not the entire Bullets Forever community. We're a place of many opinions, not just one.

We don’t need Wall to be a great shooter, just a serviceable one.

Dead-on (unlike Wall's jumper)

Shooting is developed through time and effort in the gym. As long as Wall works at his game as hard as he can, the shot will come. He has the height and althleticism to shoot over people, so it is difficult to imagine that this will not develop as an integral part of his game.

it was in a high school game

and chris paul was not a good shooter in college. he had no 3 point shot whatsoever.

Thats not what the stats say
Chris Paul Stat Summary:

Season GP MPG PPG FG% 3FG% FT% APG RPG BPG SPG
2004-05 32 33.4 15.3 45.1 47.4 83.4 6.6 4.5 0.0 2.4
2003-04 31 33.6 14.8 49.6 46.5 84.3 5.9 3.3 0.4 2.7
    Career 63 33.5 15.0 47.1 46.9 83.8 6.3 3.9 0.2 2.5

Shot over 46% from three in both seasons. Thats good.

Exceptional actually. Better than Billups and Nash, for example.

And Stephen Curry, J.J. Redick, Ray Allen, Kyle Korver, Jason Kapono, Mike Miller…
And every other active notable 3pt shooter I could think of.
Saying he had no 3 point shot whatsoever is pretty ridiculous.

look at chris paul scouting reports from that year's draft.

He too had to develop a shot. Now, you know any baller can catch fire and rack up points. I wouldn’t be shocked if Wall lights it up for 40 before the all star break. However, he is similar to Paul when Paul entered the league

Not sure where you're getting this

Paul could definitely shoot in college. Very well (47% on threes in college). The scouting reports also said he was a great shooter. You’re pretty much making this up.

You’ve only got 10 guys here, and Davis and Arenas are conspicuously missing (both shooters). You do have a valid point, though. PGs can be very good even without being good shooters, and most can learn to shoot at least set shots effectively even after they enter the NBA (see Jason Kidd with 1,662 career 3PM and over 40% each of the last 3 seasons).

Not making it up...googled it

However you seem to have more info so I believe you. I can show you the link I used.

I can’t say I honestly followed Paul before the NBA so I will take your word for it. Nevertheless you get the point of my post. Success for a PG does not go hand in hand with good shooting. I had someone else I wanted to add and I must of forgotten hence 10 guards. Lastly, I would not consider Arenas or Davis at this point in their careers top 10 point guards. Not hating, just see Arenas as more of a SG and Davis more of a role player

Once he can shoot

He will be unguardable. Don’t need him to be a dead on shooter right now. He needs to get to his spots where he knows he can shoot at a high percentage.

I'm a short white guy...

…and even I learned to shoot! I learned the proper technique and worked like a dog to perfect it! Not perfect yet but it keeps me playing pickup ball…..

I think the best comparison for him would be Dwyane Wade

They get their points in similar ways (or at least they seem like they will at the NBA level). Wade’s still not a shooter, but he’s serviceable from midrange and hit the occasional three. Wall will be fine if he can just get like that, 35% on threes and league-average numbers on mid-range jumpers and he’ll be fully capable of putting up 25 or 30 a night if wants (probably 20-25 since he’s more pass-first).

The scary alternative to this is him not learning to shoot, maybe because he tends to not jump straight up. That would be Steve Francis, who basically fell off the face of the earth once he hit 29.

Stevie Franchise...

What a scary thought!
I just hope J.Wall keeps his maturity and doesn’t start to refer to himself in the third person(Crab Dribbler), the greats one stay just humble enough to work relentlessly on their game!
