So, who's excited? I know from mostly lurking around here that a few of you guys are footie fans.
Growing up in Brazil, my two favorite things to watch were soccer and the rare NBA game that would maybe get broadcast there. Hey, it was the 1980s/early 1990s, satellite tv didn't really exist, and the NBA was distinctly less global than it is today. The games weren't broadcast live, and we'd have to stay up till 1 am to even catch a glimpse of them.
When my parents moved to DC in the early 1990s, it was the opposite - I now legitimately had a team to root for in the Bullets (whereas before I didn't have any reason to be loyal to any franchise before, other than whichever team I played with on my buddy's Sega Genesis) and I could watch all the NBA action I wanted, but in those pre-Internet days, where soccer/footie got no coverage in the States, I had no news of the Brazilian men's team other than newspapers that people in Rio mailed - MAILED! - to me. So, all in all, I'm incredibly excited for the world cup, because I think it's the greatest sports competition on the planet, but I'm doubly excited that I no longer have to live in a zero-sum world where I can only see coverage of one of the two sports.
Sorry if this is too off-topic for the BF community, but I thought I'd throw it out there...
