Report: Knicks meeting with Mike Miller tonight (UPDATE: Miami later)

So, you're the Knicks.  You have all this cap room.  Who do you meet with first?

If you said Mike Miller, you win, at least if Marc Berman of the New York Post is to be believed.

At 9 p.m. Pacific time, they were planning to meet with Washington's 6-8 small forward Mike Miller before sitting down with Atlanta's Joe Johnson, according to a source.

If the Knicks have no luck with the elite five free agents, including LeBron James, Miller is a very serious option because his perimeter shooting is perfect for Mike D'Antoni's offense.

Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld wants to keep Miller but the Knicks could be in the position to overpay if desperate. Miller averaged 10.9 points but shot 50 percent from the field and 48 percent on 3-pointers.

He's all yours, Knicks, especially if you overpay.

(Also, as expected, the Wizards won't pick up Josh Howard's option, making him an unrestricted free agent).

UPDATE: Miller is also meeting with the Heat eventually, according to Michael Lee.

UPDATE: Via Adrian Wojnarowski.

Mike Miller is turning into hot property, league executives say. He can expect offers starting north of mid-level exception in 1st year.

If true, I think we can safely kiss him goodbye and not feel bad about it.

Some real surprises at the last minute....

Richard Jefferson opting out of $15.2 Million…
Grizzlies not picking up the option on Ronnie Brewer
Joe Johnson to get the Max from Atlanta…
Mike Miller the first Free Agent to talk to New York and Miami (are you kidding me?)

nothing of interest...

Could care less for any of those guys, well the Joe Johnson situation is intriguing, but other than that, they mean nothin to the Wizkids

No - no interest for the Wizards

but as a Fan of the NBA, there are certainly some very interesting stories going on…

Besides, I think the Wizards could use a guy like Ronnie Brewer……. (but like Mike Prada, I like Dorrell Wright better)- and Brewer could be too expensive.

I didn't really understand the Joe Johnson contract either...

Although he is currently in his prime, he will never play up to that contract. I guarantee the Hawks will be trying to unload him after a year or two and wont because nobody will want to pay that $20mil/yr salary. It also cripples them with any future moves they will need to make in the future. Josh Smith is going to be a free agent soon as well. He IS the franchise in my opinion and they are not going to be able to pay him when the time comes. They basically put themselves over a barrell on that one.

Man, if the Spurs get a 2nd tier big guy on the roster, they could try to win it all…again.

The scary part

They could trade Tony Parker to a team with cap space. If they do that – suddenly, they have max cap room (or close to it) with a Duncan/Ginobili/Blair/Hill core. Imagine adding Bosh to that, for example. Hmm…

Without Parker?

Seems like a step back. That’s 3 PFs you have there.

?

Is it that hard to find time for them, given that some will play reserve center, some will defend the 3 etc? I keep seeing snarky comments about it without any further thought.

Not to mention overseas or the DLeague

With the Spurs you’re talking about going after a guy that plays Duncan’s position.

I wont be mad, but

I loved watching Mike play…if all 5 players on the court played like him there would be a shot clock violation every other possession, but boy would they swing the ball around the perimeter beautifully.

But seirously, I enjoy watching Mike and maybe he passed up too many shots but he is a smart player and would be a top notch 3rd or 4th fiddle and he would really help a guy like LeBron or Wade. He would get so many wide open 3pt shots that even HE couldn’t pass up.

I'll miss Mike

Though I won’t miss his passing up all those open shots. But he was never planning on coming back anyway. Plus you knew he was expendable the moment Hinrich was traded for because of what the Wiz front office was saying to the press about Hinrich: that he was a “glue guy”.

No NBA team has to carry more than one token “glue guy” at a time.

I guess in NBA lingo, "glue guy" = "white guy"...lol

J/k, but Miller just to drive me crazy with his non-shooting self. The guy can shoot at a rediculously high percentage, but wouldn’t shoot. Made no sense!

I dont think he would really fit in with all of the new players we are bringing on at this point, unless he was willing to come off the bench and play the role of a “designated shooter”, which he didn’t seem to care for this past year. So it would only make sense for him to go elsewhere.

Still think we should have traded him at the deadline.

Good luck to him wherever he goes. Except if he ends up playing with LeBron. Then I’m hoping for a tandem bicycling accident.

josh howard

any chance we sign him for a reasonable amount if no other team jumps the gun (although some team probably will…)?

by Dreezy on Jul 1, 2010 12:13 AM EDT reply actions

I think JHo may actually stay with the Wiz by default...

Unless there is a seiously desperate team out there who is willing to pay a guy who wont even be on the court until at least December and still wont be 100% at that.

I’m hoping we can keep him on the roster with possibly a 2-3 year deal for no more than 10-12mil. If he can be the JHo he was before his injury, then it’s all good!

by TheRealBigMike on Jul 2, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I can also envision this...

I think the guy wants to play here… and his four-game Wiz stinit last year was pretty good although that is hardly a fair sample. a 2-year deal… or three years with partial guarantees… might work out for all concerned.

by khrabb on Jul 3, 2010 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope Mike Miller actually plays his role for his next team.

We wanted him to be an outside shooter who could spread the floor, instead he wanted to be a playmaker and drive and kick. He’s a good player but I hope he does what he does best on his next team. I think some team is gonna be a little disappointed in a couple years.

Yeah, I think people on here are way too harsh on him. He's going to go to a good team and fill the role he was meant to fill his entire career

e’s going to go to a good team and fill the role he was meant to fill his entire career and play a HUGE part on a contending team

by Matt Lilly on Jul 1, 2010 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Mike

But if he gets the full MLE or north of there, we’re better off without him. Of course, we’re paying way more than that for Hinrich. They’re similar in that they’re both very smart-playing glue guys who can really help if they’re put in the right roles. I’m eager to see how an excellent perimeter defender will help the Wiz. I’m sure the nights his shot is clanking will give me more gray hairs though.

I’m really perplexed by Jefferson’s move. I can’t see him getting more than half of the $15 million he turned down. Wonder what that’s all about.
