Should The Washington Wizards Re-sign J-Ho a.k.a Josh Howard This Off-Season???
In my opinion, yes they should. The reason why is because even though he is injured when he plays hard and he plays smart. This team needs more players like that. Guys like him and James Singleton (energy guys). Even if he will probably miss the first week or month of the season the wizards will have someone like Al Thornton to fill the void. The wizards can also draft an impact small-forward like maybe Wesley Johnson???
I would take a chance on this guy because of the way he plays. Maybe at the beginning of the year Gilbert Arenas could have to do more. Or Al Thornton is the guy for the year and Josh Howard could spot him some time off the bench while still recovering. That may not be a bad idea.

How much are we paying him?
That’s the big question. I’m not trying to answer for anyone else, but I think that just about everyone here would be on board for that if the price isn’t anything astronomical.
And I agree with your points regarding his hustle on the floor.

For Oberto Bucks, maybe
Otherwise, is an injury-prone 30 year old with character issues a good fit for a rebuilding team after a scandal involving the franchise player? No thanks

Are the Wizards rebuilding, or going for a quick fix?
If Howard resigns for one year, he’s going to want to put up good stats, and thus will want a lot of minutes. That’s fine if the team is striving first and foremost to push for a playoff spot. If they are rebuilding, however, as I believe they should do, then signing Howard will cause problems. He’s been a bit of a problem child throughout his career, so quietly letting youngsters play in front of him or instead of him at times during a contract year doesn’t seem likely.
I guess I don’t understand some Wizards fans’ interest in Howard, and I’m guessing it’s because he is on the Wizards right now and is forefront on our minds. But that shouldn’t matter. The way I look at it is that the Wizards have cap room, and they should sign whoever fits their plan going forward. If Howard was still on the Mavs, still hurt his knee, and the Mavs were going to decline the team option this summer, would Wizards fans scanning the list of free agents be saying, “Oh, we need to get Josh Howard!!” I don’t think so. It shouldn’t be different because he’s here in D.C.
Well said
I really like Howard’s game, but I just don’t think nursing a 30-year-old (who was already declining before the injury) back from a bad knee injury is the right move for a team that is rebuilding.
i agree with this
but one difference is that josh howard might actually want to be here. that’s been a problem for this franchise over the years. seems we frequently have to overpay to get guys to come here. if we can get him for reasonable value, i wouldn’t be upset to have him – depending on who we draft…

So is it tank or rebuild?
Should we plan to be terrible? If so, then don’t sign anyone. Get Gilbert back, add some pieces and cross your fingers. I prefer to try to put a quality product on the floor and take our chances because I don’t think we have to tank to make progress. I say that because the team culture needs a turnaround and you can’t do that with the status quo in the locker room.
that said, I only offer him a one year deal. Most any FA we talk to should hear the same thing. Love to have you, here is 3M, with the chance to earn 3 more if you play certain minutes.
Josh Howard fits the mold of guys i want during the transition.
1. One Year Deal. Sorry, that’s all we got. take it or leave it.
2. Hungry: contract years do wonders for motivation. No one will be more motivated to succeed than your 30-year-old forward coming off an injury. We have the minutes if you have the work ethic to earn them.
3. Defense: we have a solid offensive system and a core of scorers. bring in defense, rebounding, and unselfish play.
He isn’t a building block but there is plenty of room for someone with his skills if he agrees to play the right way. This team needs some vets in key spots to hold our ground while in transition. Howard showed he was willing to do the work once he got a fresh start. Its worth something to me.
Aside from Singleton and Livingston..
I don’t really want to keep anybody we have a choice on. It would have been nice to keep Gee, as well, but it is what it is.
Singleton, livingston etc.
We should have a roster full of draft picks, b.o.y.d., undrafted guys with flash of potential ie wes matthews, and d-league. We shouldn’t throw anything more than pebbles at players older than 25. Bring in cheap has-been veterans if we need leadership.
We should have as low a payroll as we can. Makes more sense to have pay nothing for 20 wins, than to pay a lot for 35.

I think Josh Howard would continue to be a good player on our roster
But only for maybe a two year deal. He did show me something in his 4-game stint in a Wiz jersey. He showed what he could do and gave the team a confidence boost when he was in. I hadn’t seen the team hustle as much on the court the entire year before his injury. They never really looked the same after the fact. Don’t forget this guy is coming from a team that was a mainstay in the playoffs and can at least help us to get to that level.
I do think that we should focus on Shawn Livingston first.

Are we rebuilding or reloading?
If we are rebuilding, then we have sacrificed the next two/three years in favor of long-term success. That would mean that a player who will not be with us for more than the next two/three years should be valued entirely based upon the impact he has on the young players basketball development and character development. Is Josh Howard mentor material?

ENOUGH OF GEE, do you think teams would give up players like howard, ross, singleton, thorton if they were all that, they were traded, they didn’t leave on there own,[give me a break].
straight talk

There’s no way they pick up his $11.8m team option for next season – that goes without saying. With a torn ACL, he’s also not likely to be 100% next season. Plus, he’s 30 years old, and has a history of issues. I like Howard, but if I were the GM, even I wouldn’t pursue him unless it was for a bargain basement price. It’s likely they’ll let him go and use the salary space for someone more promising.
it depends on the price
Assuming Mike Miller is not kept the Wizards basically have just Al Thornton at SF. Thornton is ok, but it would good to have a better player starting. If the Wizards get a guy in the draft it makes the argument to re-sign Howard weaker.
However if other positions are addressed in the draft, a cheap deal for Howard may be a good way to address the need at SF.
