Bill Walker- another possible bad trade for Grunny?
So if Bill Walker puts up a few more good games, isn't that another trade that looks bad for Ernie Grunsfeld? When Ernie sold the rights to Bill Walker, when he was taken with the 47th pick in the 2008 nba draft? Mike what do you think? I know Bill Walker wasn't really a blimp in anyone's radar, but still, I don't think it bodes well that we passed on him. Then the following year we passed on Dejaun Blair. Arg!

I thought Pollin directed that sale
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
really?
I can easily put the Gil and AJ extensions on Abe because he was very personally involved with both players. But he was to the point of telling Ernie which picks to sell?
In the end though, we can’t know if Ernie would have picked Walker anyway. He picked Walker for Boston.
I mean I'm not sure
I’m just trying to remember it. I don’t know any basketball reason to sell a pick.
Walker certainly wouldn’t have been bad to have, though I don’t think he’s very good.

He’s damn good for a late 2nd rounder, as evidenced by his early play in NY…..and if he’s on the Wiz today, he’s obviously fairly high in their rotation. Does that make him good? Well no, but most ppl on Wiz currently aren’t

He's not better than Thornton or Singleton

An under-sized forward
That can’t shoot a jumper. There are like 50 of these guys playing in Europe and the D-League right now. He is just as blah as he was when we drafted him.
Actually he can shoot.
He’s been a good shooter in the D-League.
Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.
The D-League is just that
the D-League. He is shooting under 30% from three in the NBA. As a 6-6 Guard-Foward with average at best ball handling skills his skill type is everywhere. I could pick 5 right now coming out of college this year that won’t even get drafted. I look at it like this we signed Mike Harris for next to nothing and made money selling another soon to be career D-Leaguer/ Euro Ball player. That looks like good business for me.
I dunno
Part of the reason he’s impressing now is that Boston sent him to the D-League the last few seasons where he got playing time and could work on his game. The Wizards likely wouldn’t have done the same, and we’d probably be talking about him the same way we used to talk about Oleksiy Pecherov.
Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.
That sale could've been the difference for a championship team
I know, I know.
But at the time, the money we got in return could’ve turned into Abe’s willingness to go over the luxury tax. That could’ve turned into a solid free agent signing to team with the big 3.
I understood the move then, and I don’t think Bill Walker will ever do enough to make it a bad move on our part.
