I Hate JaVale McGee
There, I said it. This guy pisses me off more than any other player on this team, even more than Earl Boykins. He is so incredibly stupid, I can only describe him in Charles Barkley/Bill Walton-style hyperbole. JaVale McGee is the dumbest player in the history of civilization.
I have more faith in my dead dog solving a complex calculus equation than JaVale McGee actually being in the correct spot on the floor at any given moment. Remember when Shaun Livingston got slammed to the floor on a hard pick at the end of the first half? I saw him get up and run over to JaVale screaming. Sam Cassell joined him. On replay, I could clearly see JaVale's man step up to set the pick. It was JaVale's responsibility to alert Livingston. What did JaVale do? Stand all by himself at the top of the key with his head stuck firmly up his ass. He never bothers to pull his head out. Then he gets all defensive when Sam Cassell got in his face. "Look, Sam, I needed to be standing all by myself at the top of the key with my head up my ass on that play! Why are you yelling at me?!"
Remember how the Bobcats kept getting dozens of wide open dunks on fast breaks? Take a wild guess who was responsible for the open guy. Good ol' Lemonhead, trotting up the court like a retarded kid trying to find his short bus. Also, on several occasions he gave up an offensive rebound and a put-back (mostly dunks), because he would rather stand to the side of the basket and try to jump high rather than actually box anyone out.
I've had it with this clown. I don't care how much potential he has on offense, he makes Antawn Jamison look like the defensive player of the decade. I have zero confidence that he will ever get it. Maybe after 10 seasons of NBA play, he might work his way up to being merely a below-average defender, but we should never expect anything more. Trade him, cut him, I don't care. The longer we try to make this joke of a defender work as our center of the future, the longer we waste time.
It's time to cut our losses. Maybe some other GM will offer us a late 1st round pick or something because of all the "potential" JaVale has. Maybe I'll rue the day I wrote this FanPost. Whatever. Just one man's opinion, based on a lot of observation and a very clear gut instinct. I simply do not believe that JaVale will ever play well enough on offense to make up for his terrible defense. Never. He is completely clueless.
This represents the view of the user who wrote the FanPost, and not the entire Bullets Forever community. We're a place of many opinions, not just one.

Feel better?
That was such an effective rant that even I feel better.
We have to be patient for a while longer with this kid. Let him go out there and make an arse of himself, and then chew him out and show him the tape. If he still doesn’t show signs of improvement by the start of next season, then I’ll be on board with getting rid of him.
You're Being Way Too Rational and Level Headed
But for the record, yes, I do feel better. I hope you’re right. But if he is learning anything at all, he sure isn’t showing any signs of it.

This is the moment where I wish I could have a Bullets Forever only sig again like back in the good old days. This would be it cuppet. Well done.

Why couldn't you have hated JaVale McGee in 2007!

I Don't Know Him in 2007
In 2008 he was drafted, and I hated the pick. Then I saw him do some crazy, amazing things on the court and I started/wanted to believe he could be great. Now I’m back to hating him.

ridiculous
you are waaaaay out of line for that rant. You do realize you’re talking about a 2nd year center right? A position that is the slowest to develop? He’s a second year forward on a team that’s in the midst of a 12 game losing streak. Frankly, I’m disgusted by your comments. I COMPLETELY disagree. Give him time to learn the NBA game, put on weight, learn when to try and and not to try and block shots. You say you’ve lost all patience, than you really don’t know what patience is. He’s a 2nd year player, he might as well be a rookie with how much PT he got last year. The fact that you can’t understand that Javale is a young player that you can develop and surround with other talent is disappointing.
Do you actually watch the games, or are you so obsessed with his bad qualities that you don’t recognize his good. He shot 50% from the field and grabbed 12 boards! is that really “short bus” or do you just have an agenda?
No Agenda
I just want some sign that he’s learning. Small corrective steps. He doesn’t have to hold Dwight Howard scoreless for a game. He just needs to cover his man once in a while. Box out once in a while. Actually be in the correct spot once in a while. Not jump at every single pump fake. Go one game without throwing up a shot so ill-conceived that all fans can do is shake their heads and say, “what was he thinking?!”
Of course young players need time to develop. And yes, center is the slowest position to develop, I give you that. But you never saw Dwight Howard play this completely clueless on defense. He may have given up a lot of points when he was a rookie, but he at least showed good fundamentals. He gave fans reasons to expect much greater things. Ditto for Duncan, Shaq, Perkins, Nene, hell, even Erik Dampier never looked this bad on defense. That’s saying a lot.
Do you actually watch the games, or are you so obsessed with his bad qualities that you don’t recognize his good. He shot 50% from the field and grabbed 12 boards!
Actually, I do watch the games. Most of my observations from my post above came from the game you are talking about. And I don’t get excited about box score stats when the team is hemorrhaging points every time he takes the floor because of his really dumb mistakes. For everything JaVale did good last night, I saw at least 2 things that he did that was just totally stupid and hurt the team. Missed assignments on defense accounted for most of those stupid things, which don’t show up in the box score. If they did, JaVale would be leading the league in them. I’m convinced of it.
He’s a 2nd year player, he might as well be a rookie with how much PT he got last year.
I’m convinced now that Tapscott was justified in not playing McGee more last season. I mean, if you don’t even know where you are supposed to stand on the court, or where your man is on defense, then why do you deserve playing time in a game? Those are things that need to be learned in practice. Actually, most players learn those things their freshman year in high school, but I suppose McGee has some sort of mental disability to account for. Maybe he’ll learn to find his man by his 5th year in the league, if he’s lucky.
Frankly, I’m disgusted by your comments. I COMPLETELY disagree.
Sorry I offended you. I am going a little over the top, but it’s how I feel right now. I could be wrong. But I just think this is going nowhere. You get a sense when you watch a young talent that winds up being really good one day. I just don’t get that sense in Lemonhead. My guy instinct is telling me this project is a waste of time. Fortunately for you, I don’t make the decisions.

Funny, I was saying the same exact thing all last year, and nobody wanted to hear it. Proof is in the pudding. He’s raw… Move along folks, nothing to see here.
I suppose McGee has some sort of mental disability to account for.
Oh come on cuppett its not that serious. You will eat crow. It will be some time, but you will.
Sorry
I couldn’t help myself.

Sometimes it feels good to blast somebody!
I am glad you feel better and I can understand your frustration. I still think its better to learn by screwing up on the floor than not, so I want to see him out there because I think he can learn. And Tapscott could’ve played him last year and some of the vets could’ve helped him learn and corrected him, then he might be further along this season.

As to Your Other Point
If you did say those things last season, than kudos to you. I’ve come around on this. I thought at the time that a lot of playing time would accelerate McGee’s improvement, and by the end of the season we would be looking at a much better player on defense. But McGee has now had two training camps, almost two whole seasons full of practices, and plenty of playing time this season. And he is barely better on defense than when he first started, IMO.

hope
all I’m saying is that what do we gain by ripping on Javale as bad as you did? I can think of 10,000 other much worse, pressing matters facing the wizards than Javale missing defense assignments. I mean honestly,
-ownership in limbo
-no identity
-immaturity
-probably nobody wants to be here
-dwindling fanbase (Bullets Forever not included, we are the faithful)
-19 win season, followed by this quagmire of a season
-injuries, injuries, injuries
-players talking back to coaches,
-overall bad luck
-a ball and chain named Gilbert
So I think the reason I balked at your initial post, is because when I see flashes of dominant play from Javale it makes me a tiny bit hopeful of the future. As wrong as that may be.
Just imagine if Javale puts on more weight in the offseason, watches hours of tape each day. You can’t teach athleticism, but you can teach when to stay down on pump fakes, when to rotate, how to set better picks.
Bottom line, is for your sanity as a Wiz fan, you HAVE to give him more time and patience, what else do you have.

To Your Last Question
Bottom line, is for your sanity as a Wiz fan, you HAVE to give him more time and patience, what else do you have.
Well, we have lots of cap space and 3 draft picks in the top 35. I think it would be a mistake to not address the center position in either free agency or the draft. I do not think JaVale McGee is the answer. At the very least, we need a Plan B. And at this point, I am so frustrated with him that I wouldn’t mind it if we tried someone else and made JaVale the Plan B.

more
also, what’s the better alternative? potential in a player is one of the few things us suffering wiz fans have to hold onto. How terrible would you feel if Javale went to another team only to blossom into another Dwight Howard, I’m sorry, but your assessment I feel is so incredibly off, I just feel sad
Then I Will Rue the Day I Wrote This FanPost
Like I said above, this is possible. But my gut says this is a waste of time.

It was easier to like McGee when we had real players
I was a huge McGee fan last year. But now, we need him to actually contribute if we are going to win any games, and he’s coming up painfully small. I understand that big men in the NBA are notoriously slow to develop. I’m just not sure that we want him developing as our starting center or backup. If he starts it’s going to be a dreadful few years.

Normally, I would say some of this stuff is a bit over the top
But damn, these were some funny lines, and it was clear this was just an epic rant to get things off your chest.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Good rant.
But I gotta say, we drafted this guy as a project. While he can be frustrating (and right now, your rant is spot on) you gotta preach patience when dealing with a guy who we knew needed to be taught the game when he was drafted.
Just as a side note – this seems to be EG’s MO – physically talented guys that need to learn how to play the game. See also: Young, Nick and Thornton, Al.

Comparison
Just as a side note – this seems to be EG’s MO – physically talented guys that need to learn how to play the game. See also: Young, Nick and Thornton, Al.
I actually think that both of those players are good contributors on both sides of the floor. They are both pretty good man on man defenders, and they are both pretty good at scoring. Their problems are that they need to round out their games on both sides of the floor. They need to learn to fight through screens better and anticipate their defender’s moves better on defense. On offense, they need to learn to pass the ball more and move better without the ball. But they give you something to be hopeful for on both ends.
McGee give me something to be hopeful for – on offense. But I’ve lost all hope of him being an overall positive contributor on defense. Hence my rant.

Nice rant!
Hope it helped!
Now back on topic. I saw progress last night. I actually thought the Bobcats front line was a good matchup for him, and to my eyes, he did ok, considering… He showed glimpses of an offensive game, stayed down on pump fakes and still managed to block/alter shots, and a few other things.
On the flip side, his picks were awful, and his floor awareness was lacking as usual. But on the whole, I’ve seen worse games from him, and because of Andray the Brat, he got to play through his mistakes and still make some positive contributions…
Glad You Saw Something Positive
He must have done a lot of good things while I was turning my head in disgust and cursing. Seriously, though, I did see some good signs on offense. I think he has the potential to be a pretty good offensive player, if he can just cut down on his terrible shot selection. Defense, though? Meh. I still see a pogo stick out there. That is, when he was actually close enough to his man to contest the shot. That did result in a couple of blocks, but that had everything to do with his mad hops and hardly anything to do with good decision making on defense. It’s his decision making that I don’t see improving, and that really bothers me.

nicely done
i certainly understand the frustration.
the only saving grace i see is that he is working. maybe he’s slow to absorb things, but he’s not slacking off effort wise, at least to my eyes. that’s something.
he needs an off-season to really work on defense. i think if we see little progress next season, it’s time to worry.

Did you see McGee’s sideways finger roll? I have never seen anyone attempt a shot from that angle, even Twan and yes, he missed. I am pretty agnostic about McGee. Give me time and I probably will hate him. I am done with Nick Young.

No Doubt
I see both stupid shots and incredible shots come from JaVale. He has so much talent and athleticism it is ridiculous. I don’t doubt that he’ll be able to refine his offensive game in the near future. But I just don’t see any sort of learning curve for him on defense. It looks like a straight line of terrible. He has displayed 0 basketball IQ on the defensive side of the ball. If he does someday get it, he will have set new records for slowest learning curve of any player in the NBA.

I am not so sure about the talent part but his athleticism is a sight to behold. They always say big men take the longest to develop. Look how long it took Brenda to even put up decent numbers.
I love the rant though. It should be the mad lib for almost any Wizards prospects over the last couple years.
That's Where We Differ
Look how long it took Brenda to even put up decent numbers.
I simply don’t think that this is a good comparison. Prada has pointed out many, many times that “Brenda” always put up good numbers per minute, but needed more minutes to put up more numbers, obviously. Thinking that Brendan wasn’t good until his 5th or 6th year is to ignore everything but the final per game numbers in the box score. I think that is exactly what people do when they evaluate JaVale McGee. “Gosh, he scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds and 4 blocks, he’s such a stud!” Never mind that he was a -11 for the 25 minutes he was in the game, and missed every possible defensive assignment and allowed his man to put up 25+ PER numbers against him.
Brendan was the Wizards’ best defensive player for many, many seasons, even before he started putting up good per game numbers for points and rebounds. He was never, ever even close to as terrible on defense as JaVale is. Not even close. There may be a good example of another player who took several seasons to figure out how to play respectable defense, but Brendan Haywood is not that example.

Maybe Blatche would be better than
He is in, what, year 4 or 5? Mcgee could be looking for a new contract by the time the flip switches for him.
It just silly
at least to me to be so harsh on a big men who only played two years in college and that we knew was a project from the start. This is the first steady burn he has gotten in his entire career so any stats you pull out are not going to be reliable and of a very small sample size.
I'm frustrated with him as well...
It seems as though he can’t do the simple things right sometimes. It really doesn’t look like he has much basketball IQ. I think his career would be on a better track if he was on an established team that consistently made the playoffs. I think here, he is allowed to still be that goofy, developing guy, that all the fans are hoping will evolve into a great player. He can make silly mistakes because he doesn’t have a fear that they will let him go. If he was on a more established team, they could bury him on the bench and if he didn’t produce every time he got the opportunity, his young career could be in jeopardy. I’m not on board with getting rid of him just yet, I just wish he didn’t have to play so many minutes right now because its frustrating as hell to watch
Well done
I’m with you- every time he’s on the court I end up screaming at my television. When he starts getting within 6 feet of his man on defense, then we can talk progress.
