Around SBN: Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

The suspended Washington Wizards guard tells Esquire magazine he wasn't using "longevity thinking" when he took out four guns in what he says was an attempt to play a prank on teammate Javaris Crittenton in December.

The only punishment Gilbert Arenas deserves is bringing some sort of excitement and attention to the super lackadaisical Washington Wizards.

I will never forget the memories he has given me, the feelings that erupted out of me when he would make a play that I could not see ANY player completing, and competing day in and day out.

Ill never forget meeting the guy, no security, no nothing, and just chatting with him about the season, he was so generous, and real. I respect the dude in so many ways, however, its also his depressing his career, and when he finally gets back he gets suspended. But really it was his actions, so what can I say, all my friends personally own guns, some registered some not, regardless he should have avoided getting caught.

I don’t know what to say about this failing sinking ship of a franchise either, and I don’t know that Arenas should even be on our team although I want that more than anything.

I really hope Arenas gets a ring before he hangs up the belt, more than Jamison, and Caron, why? Because he played the game better than all of them.

Something I dug up for your viewing pleasure. Theres too many mixes but heres an interesting few that still get shivers.

Longevity thinking?

Happily for him, his agent did employ that mode of thinking. Another four years of longevity are forthcoming, contractually.

I'm not sure Donald Sterling is a human being. He had to have been manufactured by someone, possibly David Stern, so that one team could solely just make profit for the NBA while doing nothing good for themselves. -- Aykis 16

He doesn't understand consequences?

that’s what he’s saying basically, right?

he’s never understood consequences ever. always beat to his own drum. ever since high school. everyone else was the problem.

univ of arizona was the problem, golden state was the problem, the wizards are the problem, the miami south beach police are the problem, dc police are the problem, javaris critt is the problem, david stern is the problem, NBA is the problem……………..RIGHT?

We call that a sociopath

Sociopath is a stretch

I take it you’ve never known one. I have…

by jones-y on Mar 15, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't really understand how you draw that conclusion from the article

In fact, he’s basically suggesting the complete opposite of what you’re saying.

And to say Gilbert Arenas is a sociopath … I mean, I expect nothing less from you.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Mar 15, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Use reply.

And second its just plain not a fit, given what we know about the disorder and Gilbert Arenas.

by jones-y on Mar 15, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

First, click reply

Second, I think you should read the whole article instead of rushing to judge. There’s a lot of stuff in there about ways he’s trying to make amends. He’s not just spewing blame around like a child, as you say. Maybe you don’t think it’s sincere, which is your right, but to say he’s not trying to make amends is completely false and (I mean this in the nicest way, since it’s natural for everyone to do) shows that you’re projecting your own very, very clear opinion of the dude onto his actions.

Third, while clearly he made a mistake and has not exhibited great decision-making all the time, you’re completely (and I mean COMPLETELY) exaggerating things. Golden State? Arizona? High school? What in gawds name are you talking about? And you’re really going to equate some dumb resisting police in South Beach arrest for nothing with the thing with guns? Remind me never to do something remotely stupid around you. You’re essentially saying that if you did something like possess a gun illegally, it would be fair for me to bring up the time when you stumbled drunkenly out of a bar and passed out as if they both displayed the same character flaw.

I’m not telling you you need to change your mind to continue commenting on Gilbert Arenas. I am asking you to at least try to facilitate some rational discussion instead of just repeating the same comments over and over.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

I forgot to mention the LA charge for his first hand gun violation too

Gilbert and I are apples and oranges my friend.

If you’re a big time athlete making millions of dollars and already have a prior gun convinction on your record (LA) then you should have learned your lessons and not get in trouble again. Oh wait…drunk and disorderly in south beach. Did he learn his lesson? Nah.

This locker room gun issue is another can of worms. Bringing Israeli military grade handguns illegally in a public place in DC, then lie about saying it was for his childrens protection, just demonstrates another awful awful decision after another awful decision. Not to mention wasting his time playing big money card games instead of practicing his defensive rotations or ball handling.

He never learns his lessons, no matter every incident. He can spout all this good feeling stuff and he’s changed stuff, but he’s said it before. He’s needs a shrink honestly.

Everybody is against Gilbert though. I think even coach K had a vendetta against him too when he didn’t want him on the olympic team.

Did you want to make a diagnosis based on the Terry Schiavo video tape, here, or are you through?

I guess some people are just more tolerant of other people’s mistakes than you (you know… everybody makes them). Some mistakes are worse then others, but frankly some things just aren’t worth getting all huffy and puffy about. That includes Gilbert’s gun incidents. Go ahead and keep getting all sweaty over Gilbert Arenas if you want, but when it leads you to criticize someone for playing cards on an airplane instead of practicing defensive rotations or ball handling it gets tougher to take you seriously.

LOL

Because the aisles of a plane are a great place to slide your feet.

Maybe Gil can bring his hyperbolic chamber on board to practice

Then he’d really be a part of the Mile High Club.

Gosh....literally not figuratevly

plus if he did practice on the plane he would probably blow out his knees. Then when the wizards ask him to take it easy and not rehab…he would then subsequently rehab harder and blow out his knee again

Then he would blame the organization for not protecting him enough regarding his rehab schedule…hmm did that already happen already? YES IT DID.

another reason to love mr i can’t face consequences arenas and i always blame someone else now look at me I hang out in a grotto in mclean all by myself or maybe nick young can be my friend.

do you want me to provide more of gilbert’s antics?

by jdgreger on Mar 15, 2010 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Sheesh! ...literally and figuratively

I’m not sure it’s terribly important one way or the other to the franchise or the league if Gilbert continues to be somewhat childish. He will, thats his nature. Just as long as he doesn’t break the rules. In that regard, I think he’s going to learn his lesson this time since he’s truly being spanked for the first time in his career and maybe his life. And if not, oh well, he’ll have to pay the consequences …..again.

What’s more important to the franchise are his health and his willingness to be coached. Both to date have not been great. If he can do both, he’ll be more valuable than just a “void” would be. I say this even though I am one of his biggest detractors on this site.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

Who cares if he’s mr I can’t blame or whatever silly comments are being said, he’s a good player period.

You didn’t see Laker fans putting down Kobe when his incident occured.

Arenas is perfectly fine in my mind. I don’t care about players character I care that they go on the court and compete. That’s obviouy not some peoples interest seing as how comfortable some people are with us being the worst team in the league year after year.

talk about Unxpected!

the voice of reason! love it. i generally agree – up to a point, the character of a player is not a central issue. it’s not like he slacks off and doesn’t try his absolute hardest to be great at his job. that’s all fans can really ask.

I don't have

much of a problem with giving him another chance. I just hope he actually “gets it” this time and believes in what he is saying.

In no way is this meant to be cruel, but I’m just thankful that Abe didn’t have to suffer through this ordeal.
