Quick commentary I wrote for SBNation.com about Gilbert's number change. Does he need a new nickname? What should it be?

Maybe he's found religion

and he’s going to work hard 6 days and take a day of rest for the Lord.

#6 jersey

My only guess is he wants to be the 6th man on the team. He does not want to disrupt the starting line up next year. He is willing to be the best 6th man. Like Jamal Crawford or Mantue Genobli… This sounds good! If he is willing to play that role, the Wizards will have a great team. I was hoping he was able to play in the European League to get live game play while he is suspended.

disrupt the starting line up next year

What starting lineup? What disruption? Our backcourt will be all new, guaranteed. 2/3 of the team will probably be new.

Happy Trails, Agent Zero

I really loved watching him play for those few, short years. It was acutally exciting to go to games instead of the death watch its been lately. Oh well, we’re going to get the “new mature GIl” I’m sure, half the player and half the fun but all of the gargantuan salary.

This is good news— in that Gil wants to return to the team- with a brand new persona and fresh start.

I’m really starting to get excited about this team next season.

Josh Howard wants to stay with the team, and the team apparently wants to keep him (at a discounted salary). He could be the consistent scorer and leader we need coming off the bench in the first substitution.

We should also keep Thorton, Singleton, and Livingston…and maybe Ross too. I’d be willing to part with Miller, Foye, Young, and definitely Boykins.

We have two first round draft picks (and could end up with a lottery pick).

We have cap space to sign a solid second tier free agent (Isn’t Joe Johnson a FA this summer?)

And our young guys— namely Blatche and McGee— are getting tremendous experience playing as starters. They will only be better next season.

Who knows— if we get a solid FA, and a solid draft pick— combined with a revitalized Gilbert Arenas, a more seasoned Blatche and McGee, and hungry players like Thorton and Livingston— we could slip into the playoffs next year.

cvc...brand new persona and fresh start

doesn’t help the fact that he’s a shoot first combo guard who lost a step.

square peg…round hole.

Like they used to say in Brooklyn...

Wait till next year…

I like your optimism CVC.

As I remember, the following payers are already under contract for next year:

Gilbert
Blatche
JVM
Young
Thornton
Ross

To this add
2 first rounders (one of which has to be a lottery pick and may be a high lottery pick if the balls drop right)
1 second rounder

Resign but only at the right price
Howard
Singleton
Livingston

Let go
Foye
Miller
Boykins
Oberto

Find three good free agents.

Mix together

Pray a lot

And if Flip is the coach he is supposed to be… prepare for a possible return to the playoffs

Speaking of lotto draft picks

Evan Turner is beasting on Michigan right now.

Every time I watch him I want him to be a Wizard more and more. He is the perfect fit!

Gotta give it up for Ernie--

- I wasn’t happy about the firesale (mostly, because of emotional connection to the “old Wizards”). But he has brought in hungrier, more athletic players. He’s created cap space so that we have the resources to sign quality free agents. He’s made the decision to give Gilbert Arenas a second chance. I’m really excited about the future of this team. Now all they have to do is go back to Red, White, and Blue-our team’s traditional colors!

I'm actually kind of

nervous about it, especially since there hasn’t been any kind of explanation yet. Truthfully, I’m hoping that it means nothing, or at least that he just wants to move on from his past. Everytime the ‘0’ is brought up, they talk about his “detractors”. I think it’s safe to say that his “detractors” have moved on from his “lack of playing time”. Truthfully, the first thing I thought of when I heard ‘6’, was the military reference. In other words “Watch your 6”, which means “Watch your back.” I just hope that he’s not gonna start talking about having to look out for himself.

by CJHutch on Mar 12, 2010 2:35 PM EST reply actions

More than likely its a just harmless reference to something that's

either important or of significance to him, relevant to his current situation, or an indication of a future direction. Maybe all three.

Six is the day he was born, the day he was suspended, the number of healthy NBA seasons he’s had, the number of bullets in a revolver, etc…

Much ado about nothing if you ask me.

All they need now is a name change.

Yes, I’m talking Bullets. New owner wants to spice things up? That’ll get ’er done.

On that note, some nicknames I’ve heard: “Six Shooter” or “Six to Life”

Not enough time?

My swag was phenomenal.

006 Last of the Moicans

My point is, He sounds like he really wants to play with whatever roster comes up and willing to be part of the rebuilding process, enough to be the 6th man. New players, old roster or old, I think he understands no matter what, the Wizards are starting new and rebuilding. He does not want to take away what the Wizards organization is doing. He has accepted his role and its up to the Wizards organization to decide if they will keep him lets say after his stock goes up. I really think he loves being here and loves the city that game him stardome. I don’t think any other city will embrace him as Washington DC. I don’t think Jamison and Butler will feel like as a big star as they were in Washington.

How about

Gil and just wait to see what happens next year?

by Mike Uhrich on Mar 12, 2010 3:28 PM EST reply actions

Though it had something to do with

his birthday and suspension date being the same. I love ya, Gil, but shut up and get to work on coming back better than ever. Stop talking. Actions, not words.
