One NBA executive said he wouldn’t be surprised if the Washington Wizards don’t make a major move before the trade deadline because of the uncertainty about their ownership situation and Gilbert Arenas’ future. Still, that hasn’t stopped the other Wizards’ players from fretting about their own futures. The players think only one of them is safe from a trade: Mike Miller.

Exactly
Why is someone with a $10 million expiring contract who could easily fit into another club’s scheme as an off-the-bench three point shooter and do-everything type of player not being discussed more in trade rumors?
Cause Ernie is lunchin
At this point, I’m really hoping he isn’t retained. His moves have always been suspect, but had potential. He’s made far more poor decisions than good ones in his tenure.
I wonder how much of his bad decision making is Abes doing
I bet alot.

What the heck are we waiting for?

because miller is having an MVP season
and is about ready to key a playoff run.

eh?
Miller and Haywood should be the two most likely to be traded, even if its only for a pick or two and an equal expiring contract of a crummier player.
Right, but they aren't
And they have expiring deals and are useful pieces for contenders. If they aren’t traded, then it makes no sense.

Figured
There’s always an excuse not to make a move. And Ernie, it seems, will always take that excuse.
If he makes no trades, it would be inexcusable for the new ownership to keep him around.
Well
He said this is the player’s opinion on who’s safe from being traded. So I would’nt be so quick to jump all over Ernie for this.
Let's wait until the deadline passes
If nobody goes, Ernie better have a damn good reason when he meets with Ted.
I have a feeling that regardless of how the team was doing
Ernie would not make a trade. It’s just not his nature.
What?
Ernie is known for being quick(some say to quick) to pull of a trade. No trades are getting done for a week regardless of the GM. To say making a trade isn’t in hisnature ignores his career. Abe not having it in hisnature to trade a guy he likes rings true though.

The players think Miller's safe
because if the team is focused on ‘changing it’s image’ and worried about a loss of fan money based on a perceived acceptance of violent culture, a tough quality versatile white player that lives within the city limits is something that you can sell to your fans as part of your re-imaging.

That's an overly cynical way of looking at it
But there might be something to that.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
It's simple marketing
The marketing of a majority Black product to a majority White customer base is a very tricky thing. This franchise is losing money for consecutive years. Being able to sustain a core customer base is something that any marketing firm (which I guarantee you the Pollin successors have consulted) would tell you is a high priority..
White American players are a rare commodity and in times like these when you’re considering scrapping everything and starting over, Miller makes plenty of marketing sense.
BayAreaBullet, can you seriously say you can’t see the scuttlebutt of a majority Black locker room feeling this way, about this franchise?

Okay, now you're taking it a bit too far
I know you don’t mean it, but let’s tread carefully with this issue. It could simply be that Miller is a resident of DC and plays unselfishly, and not have to do with his skin color.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
You're being too generous
It’s coincidence that he lives in the district. His famliy doesn’t even live here. To assert that his residence is a factor in wanting to keep him is obvious conspiracy theory material.
I don't see any taboo situation that I'm bringing up
and if this can’t be discussed on a blog, then where can it be discussed?
If someone can tell me that race has nothing to do with marketing I’ll let it go, but anyone that knows business knows that demographic targeting is the most fundamental rule.
Marketing wasn’t even my major, just a track I took several classes in.
Nothing I’m saying is about Black or White being better players, or any of that garbage. I’m just saying that it is entirely realistic for a majority Black locker room to feel that the quality American White player would be a property ownership would be looking to exploit.
Prada, as a quality aspiring journalist who I think has a great future of sports reporting ahead of him, I would recommend you embrace the ability to discuss race without being racial. It will take you very far.

I said tread carefully, that's all

Only a few problems with this
NBA markets stars regardless of color or ethnicity because the marketing of role players has no effect. Miller is a bit player on a bad team.
Miller lives in the city because its as close to Verizon as he can get. He never even moved his family here. He has no roots here.
He’s never been heavily marketed by the team. if all these factors exist that demand the marketing of a white player, why has it never happened before? Maybe because he’s gone after a couple more months? Or (again) because he’s not a star or a draw in any way shape or form.
This is also a huge misreading of the Pollin’s as a family.

BTW...
Marc Spears is usually very good, but this “report” deserves no Fan Shot.

So don't read it then
Don’t be a jerk. Spears is good and this is something different, so I posted it.
Come on man.

My bad.
I can be an uncontrolled jerk sometimes. I don’t mean any harm by it.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Wizards made a major move by the deadline. In fact, I would be surprised if they didn’t make a move.

But you gotta admit....
That report was a little bit silly.

It was just a little note in a long column
I appreciate him passing along even if it ultimately amounts to nothing.

I'd concur Truth is right...
Not that it shouldn’t have been posted (I think anything about the team is worthy of a FanShot), but we have to be careful with the throw-away reporting we’re getting these days post Gun-gate. If every “Now that they’ve settled the ‘is he a point guard of shooting guard’…” article got Fanshotted we wouldn’t have any space for the regular, intelligent…
Never mind.
Well it's also trade season so every reporter has to be putting out material
and GM’s are lying through their teeth to try and get bargaining leverage. One thing we do know about this team is that usually when the trade happens there is not much talk about it first.

I understand
Fair enough. To be honest, one reason I put this out was just to get everyone to laugh about the Mike Miller thing.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I'm cool with posting it.
Just don’t think we should get too worked up about anything we hear in the next 2 weeks unless we are hearing it from everybody.

No GM is going to make a move till the week of the deadline
Everyone waits till the last minute hoping for a better deal. Completely standard. We should stop pissing ourselves that a move hant happened yet. We still have 13 days till deadline. If the deadline passes and nothing happens we can get worked up then. Until them it’s foolish to start crying about every BS report.

May I make a request?
Should no moves be made before the trade deadline, I would ask that we have a nice cathartic freakout thread. That night we’re gonna freak out like its June 28th, 2009.
