I've been slacking a bit on the writing, particularly with game wraps.  My apologies to that.  This means I'll probably be writing a lot as I'm watching tonight.  Was hoping to do more writing this afternoon but this Team USA-Canada hockey game has been pretty fun.

James SIngleton is listed as questionable tonight.  Here's hoping he plays.

The Nets won their sixth game of the night last night in Boston, so they're definitely improving.  This won't be a guaranteed W by any means.

GO WIZARDS!

I'd put Dray back in at this stage

Might as well teach him how to play through foul trouble while you’re at it.

by Mike Prada on Feb 28, 2010 6:38 PM EST reply actions

JaVale just makes some insane plays sometimes

I can’t think of any big in basketball who could have caught that pass from Miller, turn, and finish all in one motion.

Just wish he knew how to play.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 28, 2010 6:47 PM EST reply actions

You ever play in a pickup game, and some kid who is an incredible athlete but has never really played basketball is in the game? He makes some incredible plays, but makes a lot of mistakes and generally doesn’t know what he’s doing.

McGee reminds me of that sort of kid.

Should we be having a debate

about whether it is appropriate to criticize Flip for not featuring Blatche on offense BEFORE the trades?

Although we are a bit shocked by how well he’s playing, shouldn’t a coach know? There would have been mutiny by Jamison and Butler, but that shouldn’t have stopped a coach from doing it.

(I’m not saying Flip should have — I just think it would interesting to talk about it.)

by disgrunted on Feb 28, 2010 6:48 PM EST reply actions

It's a tough call

To Flip’s credit, he did start playing Blatche more before the trade, though it was Haywood who was losing minutes.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 28, 2010 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

maybe as a feature on the second unit

But i never saw the makeup (or concept) of this team to be, “2 teams, five players each.” More like: “the Big Three + Two Capable Starters with a bench that can give them adequate rest periods.”

by Pryme on Feb 28, 2010 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

The one thing that they could have done

Was start Blatche and bring Jamison off the bench to play starters’ minutes. In other words, split those 96 minutes between Wood, Jamison and Dray more evenly (32 each or something)

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 28, 2010 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure Jamison would have worked well at SF

For stretches, sure, but it makes him a much more ordinary player.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 28, 2010 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

yeah; he's too good a rebounder to be a SF

and Butler (unfortunately) doesn’t have the scoring versatility to be an adequate SG

by Pryme on Feb 28, 2010 7:02 PM EST up reply actions

Jamison would never have allowed it

playing time is the one thing he’ll whine about, especially with him thinking this was a veteran team.

by Pryme on Feb 28, 2010 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

Well, yeah

It’d be tough to sell him, for sure.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

A tough coach would say

“Check the standings, Antawn.”

Dray's D's been so-so tonight

Bad play on Humphries, then bad play to not see Terrence Williams behind him.

Well, he has had the opportunity to do that. Its not a function of playing time. So I’m not sure we’ll see much improvement there.

by hotplate on Feb 28, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

I'm hoping he tastes this success

Sees he really does have a chance to be a special player, and works his ass off this summer.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 28, 2010 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

I really do wonder whether a part of his prior attitude came from a lack of motivation

Like, “Why should I work out, it’s not like they’re going to bench Antawn Jamison anyway.”

Not defending that or even saying that’s the case, just wondering whether it might be. That’s kind of my hope to be honest.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 28, 2010 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

in any case, being a featured player on the team couldn't be anything but positive

That probably played a part

I’m sure it was a combination of things though. I really think he could be an All-Star next year if he prepares hard enough for the upcoming season. All of these consistent minutes will help too.

by Matt K. on Feb 28, 2010 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

I'm too scared to get my hopes this high

Blatche has been playing some outstanding basketball. I don’t wanna be disappointed if this is just fluke. The more and more I watch, I think this is the real Blatche!

just tuning into the game, AB has 24 points and 9 rebounds.

Thornton has more hustle and ups...but is nowhere close to ball handling and 3 ball.

As long as Al attacks the basket and sometimes passes out of the blocks…I’m happy.

by jdgreger on Feb 28, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

i remember when miller was on the grizzlies jason williams was injured for 5 games and miller played the PG

and they went like 4-1 and miller averaged like 7 assists. hes got the court awareness. and since he hates shooting…..

by John Park Williams on Feb 28, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

He commits too many TOs though

I think he has a tendency to make the spectacular pass instead of the simple one.

by Mike Prada on Feb 28, 2010 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

Miller makes good great stationary passes. e.g. catch and pass. shot fake pass

But is awful at passing off the dribble. Too many turnovers. He could never be full time PG.

clock problems in ATlanta!! again. game tied with 10 seconds and the clock jsut stopped

Javale

I am just tuning into the game and see Javale with 4 points and 4 rebounds against the worst team in the league while Blatche is exploding for 36 and 18. What’s going on?

by morethesamewiz on Feb 28, 2010 8:30 PM EST reply actions

What happened to Javale being the intangible cornerstone of the Wizard's rebuilding?

We built up these expectations based on flashes of promise and now it seems that the Javale-hype has fizzled out. I’m a fan, however I’m wondering how much longer its going to take until we start seeing consistency instead of occassional flashes of excellence.

by morethesamewiz on Feb 28, 2010 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

i’ve wondered how much size he can add too his frame. he might just end up being a very good energy guy off the bench b/c he cant match up with every center b/c of his anorexic frame.

AB

Statistics don’t really tell us everything about how a good a player is, but AB’s numbers tonight are awesome.

36 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, only 3 turnovers and +13 eff rating.

Is there another PF putting up AB’s numbers these days? (Granted, he’s playing against the Nets, not Timmy Ducan and the Spurs)
