Wiz having Clipper reunion: They signed former No. 4 overall pick Shaun Livingston to 10-day contract this morn. He'll be uniform vs. NYK

Michael Lee. I find this strangely awesome.

This is great

I’ve loved this guy since he came out of highschool. Plus he already knows how to deal with the inevitable knee injuries that are going to occur.

by Oldbuckwilder on Feb 26, 2010 2:14 PM EST reply actions

I love Shawn's game...

He’s a big point guard with flair…I just wonder if his knee is strong!!! Enough with the bad knees!!!!

Ditto

If he can improve and prove to be a find for the Wizards, great. If he still can’t play, it will still be nice to give a guy with really bad luck another chance.

I made this point (to Prada and Truth) on Twitter

but while it’s hard to begrudge Livingston, this just seems like EG signing someone he’s heard of rather than finding the right player. Especially after calling up Mike Harris, I think it’s somewhat of a shame the team didn’t at least take a nominal look at D-Leaguers again (and maybe they did and it just hasn’t been reported yet, but I’d think Scott would’ve heard about it). Shaun Livingston hasn’t played basketball in months, so I’m really not sure if the team should expect much from him in the beginning as he gets back into basketball shape both physically and mentally.

Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.

This is a really good point

Does this move reveal how little attention or effort the Wizards’ organization gives to scouting? How informed does a GM have to be to say, “Hmm, who’s the leading scorer in the D-League? O.K., let’s call him up. And Shaun Livingston was the #4 pick — let’s see if he has anything.”

And Earl Boykins was the other addition to the team this season. Not exactly an inspired choice.

by disgrunted on Feb 26, 2010 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Or, proponents of the D-League ...

Should be glad that they called Harris up … and as Mike Jones reported, the Wizards could be seriously looking at Harris as someone to develop, rather than just a warm body.

I mean, is Livingston completely not worth taking a flier on?

How many other Magic Johnson replicas are there out there?

He is DEFINITELY worth taking a flier on. His knee may be so bad he can never be an NBA player, but we are risking nothing.

by Manimal Smith on Feb 26, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

Well, except potentially the ability to sign more players without going over the tax

I can’t really bitch about this move, but I am surprised and I’m worried they didn’t do their due diligence.

Right, because he is a veteran and makes more?

I think our tax situation is extremely unclear atm – can anyone give the details?

by Manimal Smith on Feb 26, 2010 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

I thought the Wiz were far enough under the tax line that they could absorb a 10 day contract (or 2 or 3)

Lee tweeted this yesterday
With Gil’s guns/suspension, the fire sale and Z’s buyout, Wiz payroll went from $79.2 million to nearly $68 million in just 2 months.

If this is the case, unless the Wiz offer multiple contracts to multiple players they aren’t going over the tax unless I’m reading Lee’s tweet wrong.

That's exactly it

I’m told a 10-day for Livingston is more expensive than a 10-day for a D-Leaguer, which may hurt if we want to sign more people.

Honestly

I could give a shit less if the Pollins have to play the slightest bit of tax this year.

I know that there’s probably a good reason why we should worry as fans, but ….

Reading the article about Ted Leonsis

I get the distinct impression that dumping all that salary was partly designed to increase the purchase price for Leonsis.

Well, yes and no

Its important because there are about 4 million dollars at stake, but that doesn’t matter AT ALL to the fans. That amount of money isn’t changing the ownership situation, nor is it changing the ticket prices.

Its only important in that we need to understand that situation to be able to analyze what the team has done and what the team is likely to do with their roster moves the rest of the way.

by Manimal Smith on Feb 26, 2010 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

Are the Polins going to pay that $4 Million to the season ticket holders as a partial refund for the crap team they fielded for the last 25 years?

I’m with Truth….. I could care less if the Polins have to pay the tax…. no matter how much money they shave off the team salaries………. no matter how crappy a team they field………… they’re NEVER going to give any of that back to the paying customers (us)….

Where’s our season ticket refunds? How come it still costs $4.50 for a damn Coke? How about letting us park for free?

They were under the Luxury tax limit after they traded McGuire

So if Ilgauskas gave up $1.5 Million more, the Wizards have plenty of cash to dole out to rookies and vets for the remainder of the season…

For instance, if they signed 4-year vet Shaun Livingston for the rest of the year, it would cost just a little over $300K

As a rookie, Mike Harris is only going to cost a little over $160K if they sign him for the rest of the year.

I remember I watched his injury happen live

And he literally like tore everything in his one knee and dislocated his knee cap. I remember them saying his knee was literally barely hanging on to his body. Crazy injury! But i’ve always liked him so heres to a good come back.

I wonder what happens when you mix Livingston’s knee with the Wizards’ medical staff…

great. we love buys with questionable knees

goes back to bernard king even.

if we’re signing washed up guys named “livingston”, why not sign randy livingston while we’re at it?

Hey, a lot of us have been calling for a "true" PG

Who knows, maybe he flourishes in Flip’s system. And he’s only 24….

How many of the Clips playoffs guys are we missing at this point?

and yet

the Thunder were working to make him more of an SG/SF in Summer League/training camp before they cut him.

He may have been

It was either him or Kevin Ollie. I know at least in Summer League he was playing off the ball a lot, and I think the team even said something about a position switch, although the search function is off otherwise I could check that for sure. I would guess that the Wizards signed him to be a PG, though.

I like this move.

Like it or not, Shaun Livingston has NBA experience, is still pretty young and could fit into this team. There’s no risk by giving him a 10-day contract, and we could get some return.

Been waiting for this one for a while.

I’ve always been a fan of Livingston. I’ve been trading for him on NBA2K for the last few years. I think he’ll make an impact and be the #2 PG we’ve needed for so long.

Even though he never went to Duke

because he committed there I have always hated him.

by John Park Williams on Feb 26, 2010 3:34 PM EST reply actions

I'm glad he's getting an opportunity to play with us.

I also remember when he had the knee injury – It was horrible and I thought he would never play again. I am glad that we are giving him a shot instead of another team picking him up and we find out that another one got away from us. Welcome back Livingston!

Livingston WAS a beat

but he has been through 3 teams since his awful knee injury. Is there any reason to think he can still play?

If there is even a faint chance, then this is a good signing – nothing risked and its nice to give a guy that talent who was robbed by fate a second.

by Manimal Smith on Feb 26, 2010 3:59 PM EST reply actions

If only howard was

still playing Shaun would complete the lanky-est starting five in NBA history!!!!

We still got it

Livingston, Nick Young, Quinton Ross, Blatche and McGee.

i'm satisfied

but would support resigning howard just to swap out young, he has a little too much in the trunk. That or make a play for austin daye in the offseason. (Do you think dragic on phoenix is untouchable?)

by Arthur T on Feb 26, 2010 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

I know nick young would be glad to be swap for any one so that he can get the hell of the wizards team you have your opinion and I have mine nick young is younger and much better than howard

straight talk

Why not give the guy a ten day shot...

He was a pretty special player before he blew out his knee. If he can be 80% of that, it is still better than several other backcourt payers we could name.

by khrabb on Feb 26, 2010 4:54 PM EST reply actions

Active?

Does anybody know if he’s gonna suit up for tonight?

by CBDirty30 on Feb 26, 2010 4:56 PM EST reply actions

James will be inactive…. and I imagine that Howard will be too…

With Ilgauskas gone, and with the signings of Harris and Livingston, the Wizards have 14 players on the Roster….(Arenas and Crittenton don’t count for roster spots)…

With James and Howard inactive, that would leave 12 active players (including Shaun Livingston) – so, YES, I’d say he’ll be active.

AND he may actually get some playing time.

Over the last 5 games, Flip has played every available player on his bench… every active player that was available…

Gheorghe Muresan and Wes Unseld better stay away from the bench area tonight; otherwise Flip might try to put them in the game……

LOVE. IT.

This is a low-risk high-reward type signing. If he’s still got (which is VERY questionable) the kid can play. So let’s find out how much he’s got.
