Ted Owning the team
Is by far the best thing that could happen this season.
I don't follow hockey. I am vaguely familiar with Ted Leonsis, but....
can someone please elaborate as to why everyone is so sure he will be a good owner? Is he Mark-Cuban-rich?

It's not his money
Although he does have a lot.of it. It is that he knows how to run an organization. He let hockey people do their job. Oh yeah, he is that rich.

Yeah he's the type of owner
who understands that to build a sustainable winner, it takes a good group of hockey (basketball) minds, a plan, time, and an owner willing to bring these things together and then get out of the way. He’s the anti dan snyder.
A bit of luck doesn’t hurt either… and that may well be his undoing Hahaha!
actually
he’s nowhere near Mark Cuban. In fact, he doesn’t even rank on Forbes’ richest Americans OR richest Sports owners lists. Not that that matters. Dan Snyder doesn’t rank either. These days, it’s not about how much money you have, it’s about how you can get other people to let you spend THEIR money.
first and foremost, he is a good guy and not a jerk!

Can someone find out Leonsis's net worth?
As of 2005, Pollin’s was 180 million which ranked 28th out of the 30th team owners (maloof brothers add to 200 mill).
My limited searching turned up nothing on Leonsis, anyone have better luck? I do think its somewhat pertinent.

The Maloof family is what matters with regards to the Kings (I'm a Kings fan)
It’s a common mis-perception that the Brothers own their team when in fact the entire family has majority control. Joe & Gavin are just the best known of that family among sports fans. Mama Maloof (as I like to call her) better known as Colleen Maloof lives in Albuquerque and Sacramento and Vegas, there’s a brother named Phil Maloof who was in the New Mexico legislature for awhile (may still be—I really don’t keep that close a check to be honest), another brother named George who runs the Palms (I’m assuming yall have heard of that), and a sister named Adrienne who lives in LA but as far as I can tell has little impact on the way the business is run with the exception of her input.
The point I’m making, is that it’s not 2 brothers who own the team. I hope I’ve made it clear why.
No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
I'm not sure Donald Sterling is a human being. He had to have been manufactured by someone, possibly David Stern, so that one team could solely just make profit for the NBA while doing nothing good for themselves. -- Aykis 16
oh thank god
on a related note, i have a strong feeling that if leonsis buys the team, ernie grunfeld is done with the wizards. leonsis has been pretty active in the caps’ front office, and george mcphee, his front-office man, has shown great personnel savvy in constructing the caps into a high-octane contender. i can’t imagine that leonsis wouldn’t want to put his own brand on the team’s management, which would be a very good thing, since as the linked article appositely mentions, leonsis is known for being incredibly accessible and fan-friendly when making decisions.
well.....
Leonsis kinda let GMGM do the same thing that Grunfeld is doing. McPhee built a pretty good team who was successful, tried to keep doing “patch-work”, and the thing eventually got “stale”. Then in 2004, they blew up the squad and turned it into a successful winner OVER TIME . Grunfeld did the same thing here, built a good squad, it got stale, then he blew it up. Only time will tell if Grunfeld can successfully pull off that kind of successful rebuild or get lucky enough to get the best player in the game!

ernie will be back...he will say abe forced him to resign gilby and twan
abe did force eg to resign gilby…dunno about twan.
It's funny, on the terps message board a few years I wanted a sign and trade
of gilby/twan for baron davis/andre beidrens
i think it still would have been a good trade.
WHAT?
No Baron Davis had all the talent in the world but 50% of the time he seems like he doesnt care. That trade would have been turrible.

who played more games....baron or gilby
since they resigned? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
There's no way that could have possibly been arranged
Sign and trades never happen in the NBA unless it’s some team giving up a large trade exception in order to get the guy’s Bird Rights and therefore sign him for six years rather than five.
I believe the last sign-and-trade that involved players being exchanged was when Joe Johnson went to the Hawks for Boris Diaw.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Grunfeld out
I can’t imagine a savvy businessman like Leonsis retaining a gm who when asked if he has a stat-guy stumbles around for an answer and then finally offers some vague mention of the team using a stat service.

Have you guys seen Teds bucket list?
“I promised myself that if I didn’t die, I’d play offense for the rest of my life,” he said to himself during a plane crash-landing in ’83.
I like that #41 is as of yet unfulfilled. I hope that he will get it with one of these franchises eventually, while contending for it regularly with both.
This is from 2002, so I imagine he has crossed off a few more since then.
Anyway, I just found that after googleing him and thought I would share it here.
If you have a more updated version, I’d like to see it.
I doubt that once Ted becomes owner that he’ll fire Grunfield. When he bought the Capitals, he kept George McPhee. He’s the one that brought Jagr and other high priced FA’s to Washington. Everyone seems to forget that he failed and ultimately had to dismantle the team and start from scratch which is exactly what is happening now with the Wizards. He’s been in on the meetings that Grunfield had with the Pollins about blowing up the team. Grunfield will still be here.
He’s handsoff once he’s comfortable with gamers and sharp minds running the team on a day to day, season to season basis. Doesent go the quick fix route.
