Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

A league source indicated Tuesday that the Wizards want savings far in excess of the approximately $590,000 "trade kicker" Ilgauskas is due after being traded last week from Cleveland to Washington as part of a three-team deal that sent Antawn Jamison to the Cavaliers. While no specific dollar amounts have been disclosed, the source indicated Washington was going to be firm in holding out for the most money possible -- likely $1 million or more -- from Ilgauskas.

David Aldridge. Good. I'm all for Z going back to Cleveland, but the Wizards should make him pay for his freedom as long as he's a member of their roster.

is z currently unable to play?

if he can play, why is he not in town for the game tonight? when can we start fining him?

by arijordan on Feb 24, 2010 11:45 AM EST reply actions

good point

I’d love to see him incur some fines, though that still doesn’t save us any money. I agree with Alridge – if he wants to run back to Cleveland, he should have to ante up. I was irritated with Gooden’s stance, and I’m irritated with Z’s. Being traded is a part of the game. Unless you’re a free agent, you don’t get to pick your team. You don’t wanna be traded? Then play good enough so that your team won’t do it. It’s kind of funny how pitiful he looks in all of this. First, the only team he’s ever been on brings in a mercenary to take his place, relegating him to the bench. Then when that team casts him off for someone they think will actually HELP them, he still begs his way back. Talk about battered wife syndrome.

I say don’t pay him anything. He’s gonna sign another contract with the Cavs anyway, so why should the Wiz have to shell out any dough to him? If I were Ernie, I’d offer him a one dollar buyout.

I hadn't thought of this before

but despite all of Cleveland’s protests that there is no rivalry between Cleveland and Washington, the two current or former Cleveland players traded to Washington this month (Gooden and Z) refused to report or play for Washington, while Jamison happily suited up for Cleveland. Interesting.

by disgrunted on Feb 24, 2010 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

Let's consider a "what if"

What if, after the trade to Cleveland, Jamison refused to report to Cleveland, saying, “No way in hell I’ll ever play for those douchebags.”

Wouldn’t Jamison go down as the favorite Wizard ever? A statue in his likeness would be erected outside of the Verizon Center within the year. No one would ever complain about his defense again.

That would have been great.

opps

I so did not read your comment before posting my eerily similar one below. My bad.

by ccrun1800 on Feb 24, 2010 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

That would be great in a way

but then we would be stuck with Jamison grotesque salary. Of course we would still have his veteran savvy. You know like his ability to deprive all the young guys of shots as he jacks his way to another 20 and 10 night.

by ccrun1800 on Feb 24, 2010 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

i wouldnt buy him out…let him walk if he wants to.

i would activate him today and start fining him if he didnt suit up.

and there is no reason to help the cavs. also, i watched the orlando-cavs game. i think they need z as a backup to deal with howard.

by arijordan on Feb 24, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sure he's been excused

If we are asking him to show up and he refuses to, he can be voided.

Don't forget also

his move where he pushes his defender into Lebron to get a foul call for the “chosen one”.

by hotplate on Feb 24, 2010 12:00 PM EST reply actions

absolutely

The guy isn’t even pretending to be a player for this team. I doubt we can fine him, since the team probably is leaving him inactive to make sure he doesn’t get injured on the court. But just staying in Cleveland? Hell no. You want to make that title run? Accept a real buyout. The wizards are under the salary cap. It doesn’t hurt them much to leave him sitting.

by sierradave on Feb 24, 2010 12:00 PM EST reply actions

Even if they place him on the inactive list

that is only for GAMES….

He is still on the roster

and as such, must show up for all team practices, shoot-arounds, and other “team” activities…. unless the team gives him permission to be absent .

All the Ernie has to do for additional leverage, revoke his excused absence from the team…. tell Z to report to duty tomorrow… and that Flip Saunders will let him know his role will be … make him practice, etc…

thats what i would do immediately

dont know the downside….cleveland gets mad at us?

by arijordan on Feb 24, 2010 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

i assume that was a joke?

i think we will have to wait till next year for chemistry

by arijordan on Feb 24, 2010 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

For what it's worth, everyone's playing hard and the team seems really together right now

I don’t want to throw in a monkey wrench to that mix and cause everyone’s play to slack off. It’ll be tougher to evaluate them then.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 24, 2010 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

They're not going to do that

They’re trying to negotiate a friendly buyout. (Buyouts are supposed to be friendly, as they are a compromise between both parties.) Making him report to spite him isn’t real conducive to that.

by RamV on Feb 24, 2010 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

As long as it's not hurting us by sending us into Lux Tax or keeping us from signing DLeaguers, I see no reason to budge

He has no reason to budge for like 20 more days either. So there we are.

As we get down to the wire he’ll get more desperate but our buyout will help us less.

I have nothing against the guy, but I don’t think we need to do him or Cle any favors. I’d rather see Irene get the money than Z.

by MR on Feb 24, 2010 12:00 PM EST reply actions

Ah...

so it gets interesting…

by MR on Feb 24, 2010 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

even more reason

to stand pat. If he wants to play again this year, he needs to ante up. For once, make an overpaid player give money back.

by CJHutch on Feb 24, 2010 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

Shouldn't the Wizards' buyout demands be going up?

If Z doesn’t agree to a buyout, the Wizards will force him to play, and there’s a 50% chance he will blow out his ACL like Josh Howard, and thus won’t be able to get any good contract offers this summer.

by disgrunted on Feb 24, 2010 12:06 PM EST reply actions

Can Cleveland even sign him in time to help in the Playoffs?

No player who is on an NBA roster can be on another NBA teams playoff roster after March 1.

If the Cavaliers have to wait 30-days before re-signing Ilgauskas…………………………………

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

by Rook6980 on Feb 24, 2010 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

Then

This article is wrong….

Ah – never mind – I see it…

A player must be on the Roster by April 15 (date for rosters set for the 2010 NBA Playoffs) to be eligible for the postseason.

But said player cannot have been on an active roster on March 1st…. IE: that player must be a Free Agent (which Ilgauskas is NOT, since he’s under contract to the Wizards).

Ilgauskas has to buy out his contract from the Wizards to become a free agent prior to March 1st…. then he has to wait 30-days before he can sign with Cleveland. As long as he signs before April 15th, he can be on Cleveland’s playoff roster….

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

by Rook6980 on Feb 24, 2010 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like this could cost Z a lot of money

Which is why Cleveland should have thrown $3mil at us in the trade so we could buy Z out with it. Of course that would REALLY have looked like collusion.

by MR on Feb 24, 2010 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

Apparently they don't have to pro-rate the bi-annual

Meaning they can give him the whole thing, even he only signs on for the last 7 games of the season. He might stand to lose less by going to CLE than to DAL (for example), who doesn’t have the bi-annual to give.

I’m basing this entirely on Hollinger’s trade deadline chat.

by RamV on Feb 24, 2010 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

I read a tweet somewhere

that said Z has to wait 30 days after the TRADE to rejoin Cleveland, not 30 days after the BUYOUT. The tweet made that distinction. So from Z’s perspective every game he is paid his full salary right now is a good thing, as long as it doesn’t extend past March 1.

It's 30 days after the trade not the buyout

Per Larry Coon.

I'm not sure Donald Sterling is a human being. He had to have been manufactured by someone, possibly David Stern, so that one team could solely just make profit for the NBA while doing nothing good for themselves. -- Aykis 16

This will be over by COB Friday...

if not sooner. In the intervening two days, I wish the Wizzies would make Z come to practice and give Ja Vale a few big man tips about interior passing, rebounding position and outside shooting. Cleveland bashing aside, Z is one of the four or five best Euro centers ever to play the game… not up to Sabonis level but right there with Vlade Divac and Rik Smits.

Good. I’m all for Z going back to Cleveland, but the Wizards should make him pay for his freedom as long as he’s a member of their roster.

I’m with you Mike. The Wiz have NO obligation to waive Ilgauskas (which is why trading McGuire was so important; that was great leverage against Ilgauskas to get him to waive money) when Ilgauskas will get plenty of money for the season already.

I’m not against the waiving players in financial deals (what is Z really going to do for the Wiz—everyone knows this is about financial relief) and letting them go back to their former teams if they choose. I do have a problem with anyone who considers the Wiz have something to lose by forcing Ilgauskas to give them a good buyout.

Buyout coming soon

According to Ric Bucher. He’s says Z is just waiting on a signature. It’s insider, so I can’t read it.

by Palace of Good Play's Golden Toilet on Feb 24, 2010 4:29 PM EST reply actions

Even if it's insider, we can't just cut and paste

So here’s the relevant passage:

Ilgauskas’ buyout with the Wizards is merely waiting for his signature, a source says. Indications from sources close to the situation is that it will cost him $1-$2 million of his $11 million salary to return to the open market rather than finish out the season in the nation’s capitol.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Yes please can we take this the whole way down to feb 28th and make him take a very low buyout….I do not think it is fair for a team to trade a player and him come back to play for that same team in the same year. Lets be honest, he already said he didnt want to play for us and hes probably going to take any buyout opportunity he can get as long as he can go back to clevland for the playoffs. So i say lets wait it out until we can pay him as little as we can

by cs1022 on Feb 24, 2010 4:33 PM EST reply actions

So how exactly does a Buyout work?

We pay him to be released? Or he pays the Wizards to get released?

by qthaballa on Feb 24, 2010 5:53 PM EST reply actions

We pay him X$ for him to agree to rescind his contract

X always being less than the amount still owed on the deal. In essence he is giving us $ to get his freedom (and in most circumstances it is mutually beneficial because you can buy someone out for X and they can make more than contract – x on the open market), but in reality we are giving him X$ so we don’t have to pay him what we owe him.
