Sources: Wizards to call up Mike Harris from D-League
Scott Schroeder reports that source close to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers are saying Mike Harris will be called up by the Wizards.
Harris played a few games for the Rockets in 2007/08 and was very effective. He's currently kicking butt in the D-League and was ranked the top prospect in RU's recent call-up rankings. He played for Rice in college.
UPDATE: Michael Lee confirms that the Wizards are looking at Harris and reports they're also considering Morris Almond, who was a first-round pick by the Jazz a couple years back.

i just realized -
this is actually great. don’t know anything about this guy, but as long as the roster remains in flux, this team is un-scoutable! no one will get to know their tendencies, because they won’t know who the hell is playing. this is a revolutionary strategy.

When he played for Houston, he had several good games
I’m actually excited by this.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Does the mean the move for Dwayne Jones
is a no go? or are we going to see him as well?
Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!
It's not like we don't have room for more
What, 10 guys active?
Actually, Dwayne Jones is rumored to be going to Dallas
Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.
Question for Jon L
Is he mostly a mid range guy, or does he have a low post game?
Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!
He's actually more of a low post guy
He started out his career as an undersized PF but has been working on expanding his range this year and become more of a combo forward. Scott has updated his post to include his offensive breakdown from Synergy Sports, and about 15 percent of his offense comes in the post vs. 13 percent spot-up and nine percent P&R. Some of that may have to do with RGV’s offense and the fact that he’s been playing power forward, but he’s been one of the best players in the league all season long and is a great call-up.
Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.
If he plays hard...
He’ll be a great fit with this group of overachievers. Flip likes these guys for their energy and hustle more than anything else. I bet no one plays harder than called-up D-leaguers eager to show they deserve a place in The League.
Can’t wait to see him suit up.
if dwayne jones is killing it…then why arent they calling him up. i read the rumor on dallas, but they are free to sign with anyone. what do you think prada?

I'd love to sign whoever
I’ll defer knowledge on the specific players to Scott and Jon.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
In some ways Jones wasn't a great fit
He’s an excellent player and they likely wouldn’t be counting on him for a ton of offense anyway, but he doesn’t have the midrange shot that is sometimes available to big men in the Saunders offense (though McGee doesn’t take many of those either, right?). Any of the guys Scott already mentioned would be good, while I might add Rod Benson and maybe Lance Allred (good post defender, nice midrange shot) to his list.
Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.
thanks…but i have not seen a lot of championships won by teams who rely on big men to make a lot of mid range jumpers. i have seen a lot won with put backs and short range jumpers- even if they were not the focus of the offense (chicago and jordans teams come to mind).
arenas is prob playing for us. would like to see our big men crash the boards and put back everything they can grab from within 12 feet…
but i admit, i am biased. i hate big men who want to shoot. nowitzki is prob the best at it and what has dallas won? robert horry comes to mind, but didnt he always have someone big covering for him inside? i know he did in houston. and wasnt bynum or gasol there for him with the lakers?
jsut saying, jump shot basketball does not win many games in the playoffs when teams start to play defense. never has…. so i def prefer a man that can at least board and put back

Gasol

Seems like he might be Flip's kind of guard.

Morris Almond
A quick report on Almond -
He’s one of the best scorers in the league, and was fourth in our last call-up rankings (it’s the same link as the one up in the fanshot). He’s a good three-point shooter and, more importantly, pretty efficient. He’s also cut his turnovers down the past few years, which he needed to do, and he improved his rebounding while he was in the NBA; he now averages about five per 36 minutes, which is pretty good for a G/F.
Two other things to note: he had some back problems his last year with the Jazz, but it hasn’t been an issue so far this season. He also was just traded, from the worst team in the league to one of the best. His former coach Dee Brown (not the Chicago toughness Dee Brown, the other one) said the trade was made in part to improve team chemistry. However, in talking about it with Steve Weinman (who runs D-League Digest) and Scott, none of us have ever heard of Almond being any kind of problem player. And also we’re all pretty sure Brown doesn’t know what he’s doing as a coach.
I’d still expect it to be Harris, but that’s just a thumbnail report in case it’s Almond.

why not both?
the basketball gods know we have roster spots.

True
and especially if both Ilgauskas and James get bought out, I think it would make sense for the team to sign Harris, a swingman (either Almond or Reggie Williams) and a big man. Carlos Powell also would be an excellent call-up, but he’s more of a straight small forward, and it seems like they’d go with Harris for that.
Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.
Assuming they can sign three players

Just so we're clear
It’s Harris for sure. I’ve not heard anything about Almond, although he is always a possibility when talking potential call-ups.
I blog at Ridiculous Upside. I know you'll love it.

Luxury tax
Which is why I wouldn’t be surprised if we skate by with 12 active players. It all depends on the Z buyout.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
but didnt we just lose josh howard for the season? does that count against the cap if he cant play? thanks
by les boulez bomber on Feb 23, 2010 3:41 PM EST reply actions
It does.
Guaranteed contracts are guaranteed contracts.
Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.
no, injured players count against the cap
however, at some point he will be covered by insurance. So, although it still counts against our cap, in real dollar terms the Wizards will be saving money by the injury, which will leave the franchise with more money to spend in the long run, within the confines of the salary cap.
(Correct me if I am wrong on the insurance)
by John Park Williams on Feb 23, 2010 3:45 PM EST up reply actions
It does, but since it counts against the cap either way
Going over the luxury tax still incurs the dollar for dollar fee.

Insurance? I've never heard of NBA injury insurance. Is that real?
Who in the world would insure the Wizards?
by MR on Feb 23, 2010 3:50 PM EST up reply actions
It's real, and it's spectacular
Every guaranteed contract is insured by the team in case, well, this happens.
Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.
he seems good but
i was hoping we’d get Reggie Williams. he used to tear it up and VMI and he is still tearing it up in the dleague. The guy is a proven scorer. Someone who needs some scoring should give the kid a chance.
Count me as a guy who thinks losing Howard
will dramatically hurt the performance on the court that is so endearing to us fans.
let's hope that whomever we sign will get some good minutes this season
where would harris end up in our lineup? it seems like he fits well with thornton, because he would open up the paint for thornton’s drives and would provide some good hustle for rebounds off of his many shots.
How does this work
Can the Wizards just sign any D-League player? If so, why are there affiliations? Does anyone own the rights to these guys?
