i actually heard antawn say that on the radio pre-game

and was annoyed. really? playing with all-star level arenas a few years back didn’t help, not just a little?

i seem to remember

Antawn saying on the night of the Dallas game that because Gilbert was in the game he was left so wide open he didn’t know what to do? c’mon seriously dude wth

by Marine4Life51 on Feb 21, 2010 6:39 PM EST reply actions

not to mention

Antawn’s had lots of open looks from three point land this season and has seriously stunk it up from that range.

by Marine4Life51 on Feb 21, 2010 6:39 PM EST reply actions

No open looks?! LMAO.

Just remember game 1 of the 2008 playoffs against the Crabaliers. We easily could have won (and thus the entire series) if Antawn would have made at least one of his wide open threes in the 4th quarter. I still can’t believe how he could brick all those shots.

btw: count me in on those guys that cheer for Antawn NOT to succeed with the Cavs.

Much more disparaging of that time and I’m not going to cry if he doesn’t get one with Cleveland.

Rec'd because it had to be

But as a slight devil’s advocate point, we are the one fanbase that wouldn’t find that funny, even if he was joking.

well yeah

we are the only fanbase that he played for in those “four years”. But I understand that Jamison probably said it in a joking context, but that’s no excues for Queen Crab

We took a friend to the Cavs game this year, who is an NBA fan not from this area, and he just could not for the life of himself understand why everyone was booing him. “But it’s Lebron, how can you not like him?”……….ugh. It wasn’t till an intervention consisting of many beers afterward, that he started to see the wisdom of our viewpoint.

AJ wasn't taking a shot at this team, with that comment.

It is a little screwed up, even in a joking context. But Lebron on the other hand, made the comment just to take a shot at the Wiz.. I can’t describe how badly I hate that guy.

Let it snow- ping-pong balls, from the heavens.

by returnofswagger on Feb 21, 2010 7:28 PM EST reply actions

Jeez...

Tell me, Antawn, if you’re suddenly getting all these open looks, what explains you going 0-12 the other night?

And LeBron, didn’t you get the memo? The rivalry’s over. Digs like this just make you seem petty.

by dogshammdog on Feb 21, 2010 7:33 PM EST via mobile reply actions

no longer "lurker"

i signed up for an SB account just to post about that j*ck*ole.

i have to admit i forgot about the rivalry for a bit…but it’s back on now! too bad we don’t play the cavs again this year. unless, of course, we make an improbable playoff run. when lebron says stuff like that i think “screw getting john wall, let’s make a run and knock the cavs out in the first round”.

I don't know why everyone is upset -- Jamison's right

The last two seasons, Jamison has been the #1 option on offense for the Wizards, so other teams focused on him. But Jamison wasn’t a particularly good #1 option, leading the Wizards to the lottery last year and again this season. Part of the reason that Jamison wasn’t a good #1 option is that because he is such a poor passer, teams could double team him without too much risk. I don’t know whether Jamison intended his comments as a shot at his old teammates (unlikely, in my view), but it sort of highlighted his shortcomings.

Now he is on a team with much better players, so he is probably going to be the third or fourth option on offense when he’s in the game. And, of course, when LeBron is on the floor, Jamison will be open a ton. We’ll see whether Jamison can be effective as a third or fourth option who will need to hit open shots when he gets them.

by disgrunted on Feb 21, 2010 8:34 PM EST reply actions

to be fair, I dont think anyone is seriously "upset"

we just find it funny how egotistical lEbron james is.

In 2006, lEbron obviously traveled; but Gilbert still missed those free throws in game 6, and Caron had an open shot to win it, which he missed.

In 2008, we self-combusted down the stretch of game 1, led by Gilbert. And Caron disappeared for most of the 2nd half in game 4, and Arenas overhelped and left Delonte wide open. Not to mention that godawful three attempt. Game 5 we played our heart and soul out, and Caron Butler’s performance was the stuff of legend. But then, no one showed up in game 6.

Songaila’s suspension was a joke, but Deshawn Stevenson should have just kept his darn mouth shut and the series would never have been under so much scrutiny.

My point is: sure the refereeing was bad, and sure lEbron is a douchebag, but we had plenty of chances to win both series and we just couldn’t get it done.

lEbron wants to poke fun at us, so be it. He has just as many championships as we do.

Jamison rarely got doubled teamed

That’s using a basketball cliche to try to back a point. Just because he’s your number one option doesn’t mean other teams focus or double him. Jamison is one of those guys who can’t get doubled. When he has a shot, he takes it. If he’s in the post he makes a quick move for a scoop shot or a floater. Jamison rarely has the ball in his hands long enough for a team to double him. He scores mostly off of broken plays or penetration and kick. Opposing teams double or focus on players that can single handedly win a game by offense alone, Jamison isn’t that type of player, and that’s not taking anything away from him because he is great at what he does and how he plays. Jamison got plenty of open shots here. Plus its the NBA, EVERYONE gets open shots!

by SkinsWizStangs on Feb 21, 2010 9:06 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

i get why everyone is riled up

…When Jamison says, “I haven’t been that open…” he was paying someone else a compliment, ie: Lebron. When Lebron says it, he’s talking up himself and slamming the Wizards.

by diplomaniac on Feb 21, 2010 8:49 PM EST reply actions

Lebron sure does make it hard to root for AJ to get a ring...

… he’s a classless, egomaniac, who is “overrated” (how many rings does he have)? I hope DeShawn and the Mavs get to play the Cavs one more time this season so that he can lay some hurt on Lebron. Man, I really dislike that guy.

The guy is a

grade A jerk. I can’t wait ‘til the first Tiger Woods/Kobe-esque scandal hits him. You know it’s gonna happen, it always does. Someone that narcissistic always thinks they’re above the rules.
As for this year, I am gonna be a serious Laker/Magic fan. It would be nice to see ‘His Hinee-ness’ come up short even with his new additions. Then, when AJ and Shaq retire, LeWhine will be left by his lonesome again where, hopefully, he’ll crab-dribble his way into the history books as the greatest player to never win a championship. (Sorry Charles)

Now I’m gonna go watch some old Jordan footage of him bludgeoning Cleveland in the playoffs year in and year out.

switching topics...

I was watching some of the Nuggets game today, and Billups’ stats flashed on the screen:

Billups 19.7 ppg, 6.1 apg, 2.9 rpg. I thought, man- Gilbert’s line is better than Billups (22.6 ppg, 7.2 apg, 4.2 rpg). Gilbert stacks up well against the top PG’s in the NBA (I looked at PG’s who played the All-star game: Nash, Kidd, Rondo, Williams, Billups).

Gil is the highest scorer of the group, and Rondo, the top PG rebounder, barely beats (4.2 rpg for Arenas vs. 4.4 rpg for Rondo) Nash, Kidd, Williams, Rondo have higher APG (although Gil very respectable 7.2 APG beats Billups on APG, which surprised me because he should rack up higher assist totals with all the scorers on the Nuggets).

I mean Arenas hasn’t played basketball in two years, and he is the highest scorer and second highest rebounder among the top six PG’s in the league, and also racks up more assists than “Mr. Big Shot.” And he was rapidly getting better, averaging close to 25 ppg, 8 assists, and 4.7 rebounds the last games he played in Dec and Jan.

Yes, Arenas is an immature, irresponsible goof ball, but his basketball talent is awesome. No wonder Grunfeld said Arenas is staying with the Wizards.

I can’t wait to get him back next year.

by bronco6778 on Feb 21, 2010 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

here are the full stats for the other PGs

Nash 17.7 ppg, 11.1 apg, 3.3 rpg
Kidd 9.7 ppg, 9.2 apg, 5.2 rpg (my bad, Kidd is the top rebounder, followed by Rondo then Arenas)
Williams 18.2 ppg, 9.9 apg, 4.1 rpg
Rondo 14.4 ppg, 9.7 apg, 4.4 rpg
Billups 19.7 ppg, 6.1 apg, 2.9 rpg

by CVC on Feb 21, 2010 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

Arenas vs. Chris Paul (who is considered the BEST point guard in the NBA).

Arenas 22.6 ppg, 7.2 apg, 4.2 rpg
Paul 20.4 ppg, 11.6 apg, 4.6 rpg

Gils a better scorer, CP3 a better distributor, and about even on the boards. Again, Gil basically picked up a basketball after two years of not playing, and has comparable stats to CP3, who is widely regarded as the best point guard in the NBA.

by CVC on Feb 21, 2010 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

Gil will never be the same

He can still be a fine point guard in the league, but he will neve be on the same level as those guys ever again. You can’t miss three full years of basketball and come back and be the same player, especially after knee surgeries and all of the other nonsense he’s brought down on himself. He was getting some decent numbers but he was a big reason for our terrible record. When he was at his most valuable he was an assassin, hitting big shots and getting to the rim. Both of those aspects of his game were almost entirely gone this year, except for a few flashes here and there. If he returns to the team then fine, he is still a major talent and can get things done, but he doesn’t have the smarts or accuracy of a Billups, the speed of a Harris, the will of a CP3, or even the savvy of Jason Kidd.

by seewhite on Feb 22, 2010 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

Do those stats include

Missed shots and turnovers, As much as I am a fan of Gil I hope
he returns at SG because he aint in the same ball park as the above at PG.

Counting stats are terrible for evaluating players

It doesn’t account for so many things (efficiency, defense, team performance, etc). Here’s another way of looking at it that I think does a better job at accounting for overall performance. Take Basketball Reference’s Offensive Rating and subtract the Defensive Rating (higher is worse for Defensive Ratings). Simple but effective…

Career Averages:
Paul: +25 (+19 this year)
Billups: +11 (+13 this year)
Rondo: +8 (+12 this year)
Kidd: +5 (+13 this year)
DWilliams: +4 (+8 this year)
Arenas: +2 (-7 this year)

Negative seven this year. That’s even worse than I thought. That’s even worse than both Boykins and Foye (both negative 6, unfortunately).

by steadyhand on Feb 22, 2010 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

And Nash. You forgot him...plus 9 career, plus 6 this year

This isn’t perfect, but I think it’s better than looking at counting stats…guys like Arenas and Butler can (and do) throw up good counting stats while making their teams lose. It’s a little tougher to fool measures like PER, but even that doesn’t account for defense very well.

I really hope

Someone pops Lebron in the mouth just once on national television… I would treasure that video… I hate this guy and I hate how everyone in the media treats him like he is a good dude. He is a punk. If this was hockey, he would have had his face pummeled a few times.

Lebron sucks

That comment from a "Captain"?

I find it more and more irritating listening to comments from both Caron and Jamison about the “situation” they were in in DC.

They were the “Captains”, the veteran leaders, the highest paid “healthy players”, the All Stars and received the most minutes and least criticism for poor performances.

The audacity to blame last year’s 19-63 record on “young players” and to blame the embarrassment of this season on “off court distractions and injuries” is even more infuriating.

News Flash this team still had TWO “ALL STARS” on the roster! And as we now see,the real problems were:
Lack of hustle, energy, sharing the basketball and heeding your coaches..

Lack of hustle, energy, sharing the basketball and heeding your coaches

All comes back to the captains, to reiterate your point. Captains are supposed to lead. But they never supported the younger guys on this team, or helped them develop their games, or encouraged them. Towards the end, they became very selfish, choosing to play one-on-one and shot-jack rather than get their teammates involved. This season, the Wizards are second to last in assists-per-game with only 18.3, ahead of only New Jersey. But in the three games since we traded away our captains, this team has had 20+ assists per game. That’s an indictment against our former leaders.

Lebrick James is an asshole. That is a fact.

and AJ screw you and the horse rode off on for saying something like that. I hope everyone currently on the Cavs team never wins a ring. There is no way I’m ever considering the Cavs as “just another team”.

Because He's an "All-Star"!

I think the attitude of the old team became elitist and selfish. Everyone felt so entitled that nobody wanted to pass the ball.

Gil D

Why does everyone let him forget about the fact he was ranked the worst defender in the entire league. The entire league people! Whatever he may do on offensive, and the stats hide the fact hes a black hole who destroys rhythm, is destroyed by his despicable disgusting heartless defense and it makes me sick!
