LeBron James
i’ve been arguing with some knicks fans the last couple days. i think the deal they just made was dumb. but i digress. the point is, i’ve been thinking about destinations for lebron. i don’t like him much, but he is the best player in the league.
consider this: we’ve got arguably the best owner in sports coming in, we’ve got the best player in hockey already in the building, we’ve got a lottery pick, we’ve got some young cheap talent on the roster, we’ve potentially got a decent robin to lebron’s batman in gil (who could be a good fit with lebron), we’ve got a first class venue in place (unlike the nets), DC is a major market, a first rate city, and we’ve got obama in the house.
the perception of this franchise is what it is, but it’s just a perception. you can argue ted changes that. all things aside, i think i just made an argument that if lebron decides to leave cleveland, washington could very well be the situation/organization with the most to offer.
i don’t know if that’s irrational optimism after the last two games or what, and i don’t even know if it’s optimism since i don’t like him, but if i’m leonsis, i make that pitch, and i don’t think it’s far-fetched at all.

I think it would be sick but i just cant root for him. It would take me a long time to warm up to him even if we were winning a bunch
3 minutes into the 2nd quarter Lebron played for us you would be online ordering your r/w/b lebron bullets throwback. Its not going to happen but anyone who says they wouldnt welcome him with open arms is kidding themselves.
VOID!!!
No i really wouldnt. I just dont like his demeanor on the court. He acts as if he is entitled to everything. I really just do not like him at all

Agreed
It won’t happen, and even if it was possible I would hope it didn’t happen. I would be incredibly torn if he came here. I don’t like him at all. His whole game is based on running into people at full speed and drawing fouls. And he always pouts if he doesn’t get a call, which almost never happens in any case. No thanks.

If you think about it
Charles barkley just ran into people but he could dribble better than lebron. But Barkley wasnt a dancin fool, he was a mean pitbull and fun to watch

Barkley WAS a dancin fool
If he’d taken that finals series more serioiusly he might have a ring.
The guy was 100% knucklhead. Don’t revise history.

If he was in his prime at that time he might have won that series . Please show me one clip of Barkley dancin on the side lines

He was the league MVP that year. Not prime enough for you?
I think he was trying keep the team “loose”, but I never felt he had enough intensity that series and I’ve always believed that led to the Suns losing.
He threw a guy through a plate glass window. He broke a fan’s nose after a game. He spat on a little girl. He’s an ass.
He was a badass and i loved that about him. He didnt take nothin from nobody and when lebron gets fouled he goes to the refs, barkley either got in the other guys face or just took it like a man.

Sorry
have to disagree. There aren’t 3 guys in the league right now I’d take over Barkley in his prime. I guarantee there will never be another 6’4 player to lead the league in rebounding.
Not sure what you’re disagreeing with. That Barkley was a fool? Just turn on the TV. He still is.
Nobody said he wasn’t a great player, though.
by MR on Feb 22, 2010 1:28 PM EST up reply actions
maybe I misunderstood
it seemed to me you were implying he was maybe more flash than substance.
Th spitting instance was a shame, and in no way am I defending the act, but his demonization over it was a tad overblown. Expecially since he remains good friends with the girl. I’ll admit, I am a bit biased. Barkley was one of my 2 or 3 favorite players growing up, and I always admired the guy for not being the cardboard cutout the league wants its players to be. No doubt he made some mistakes but, by today’s standards he’s more goofball than knucklehead.
As for the “plate glass window incident” – check the story, and tell me you wouldn’t have done the same thing.
by today’s standards he’s more goofball than knucklehead.
Hahaha. This is not the place to downplay “goofballs”.
Great player and I don’t let one or two incidents define a guy, but Charles was pretty much a ‘whatever you want to call it’ for his whole career. Like I said, I think he pissed away his chance at a ring because he wasn’t taking it seriously enough, much like Webber.
by MR on Feb 22, 2010 1:57 PM EST up reply actions
Watch Game 5 of those finals and tell me he wasnt taking it seriously enough.
Also Barkley was the mvp but he couldnt do the things athletically that could years before. That behind the back move in the open floor wasnt as impressive as it was in the 80’s and very early 90’s.
by MurlandTerps on Feb 22, 2010 2:02 PM EST up reply actions
yup
and people amazed at LeBrons ability to snatch a rebound, go the length of the court, and throw down a building shaking dunk should watch some old tape of Sir Charles. He would do it sans the “crab-dribble.”
He does it better than lebron. His handles were so much better in traffic. I dont think i ever seen lebron really break anyones ankles.

tomato/to-MAH-to conundrum.
This is not the place to downplay "goofballs".
Touche.
But I’ll disagree with you one more time
I think he pissed away his chance at a ring because he wasn’t taking it seriously enough
Actually, I think his “chance at a ring” was doomed from the time he was born, and therefor forced to play in the same era as Jordan, much like Malone/Stockton, Ewing, Reggie Miller, and the rest of the NBA greats from that era. I understand what you’re saying, but I personally feel like the guy gave it his all on the court. One of the reasons I liked him so much was because, though undersized, he still dominated his competition pretty much every night. I think his heart an desire is what set him apart, just like it did with guys like Unseld, Mourning, and Iverson.
He was a great player. No doubt.
I had a love/hate with him. I liked that he would speak his mind and not be a robot like Jordan. On the other hand he said/did a lot of stupid things. Now he’s worse than ever.
I think the Suns had a real shot. He played well and got the numbers, but I think his attitude was one of a loser. But hey, I haven’t ever gone back to watch those games. I haven’t seen them since they were live.
by MR on Feb 22, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions
I dont know if jordan was really a robot he was just the ultimate professional. He still got in peoples faces and talked trash. But he still had that flare with the tongue hanging out and cryin after he won the finals.
Now tiger woods is the definition of a robot.
by MurlandTerps on Feb 22, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions
I think he
was referring more to Jordan’s “off the court” persona. His “gift” for always saying the right thing in front of the camera. (See – greatest endorser of all time)

If he had spit on a little girl on purpose that would have been REALLY bad. But when you spit into a crowd you hit who you hit.
by MR on Feb 22, 2010 5:19 PM EST up reply actions
OK,
so he was 6’4" and some change. Yes, he was “listed” at 6’6" but it was widely known that that was not the case. I had always known it, and then saw for myself when I met him and Jeff Malone after a Bullets game back in the 80’s. He was maybe a hair taller than Malone. He also states in his book that he was only 6’4".
Now, my original point, that Barkley himself was a freak of nature would hold true even at 6’6". I doubt there will ever be another player that leads the league in rebounding (multiple times even) at either of those heights. And DEFINITELY not on with his eating habits.
But I do understand your stance. Much like Lebron, Barkley was a polarizing player that not many people were indifferent towards. You either loved him or hated him.
I'm not sure
anyone really said that Barkley was better. My statement was merely that I would “take” Barkley over Lebron, just because I was a big fan of his.
Yes, I don’t think many people (if any at all) would argue that point with you. However, to play a little bit of devil’s advocate, here’s a little Barkley nugget for you. Back in 1992 a young, brash rookie came in with a monstrous reputation preceding him. Barkley, always one to accept a challenge, decided to play out of position at center for his first matchup against said rookie. Barkley ended that game with 19 rebounds, holding a young Shaquille O’Neal to a measly 5 rebounds. One of the best individual performances I’ve ever seen.

And, of course, I’ll never forget Sir Charles bodyslamming Shaq.
I want to see Lebron cover Dwight Howard.

I don't have any desire for LeBron
Sorry, just don’t. Winning just isn’t worth having that jerk-off on our team. I’m not even convinced he will win a title, even though he looks on pace to do so. I’ll be rooting for the Lakers with no regrets. The hard part will be if LeBron goes to New York. The Knicks are my guilty pleasure team. I loved watching Starks battle Jordan, and I loved Ewing and LJ and Oakley and Allen Houston. But I’m just not a LeBron fan, and I don’t think I ever will be.

It's worth trying for sure
Ted was the one who wooed MJ here, so he can get it done.
First things first, though, the Wizards would need to commit to bringing Arenas back. I don’t think it works otherwise.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Free Agency is so overrated
most of the team the team ends up overpaying a player more than what he’s worth. better for us to build from the draft and maybe attract a midlevel guy, but not a superstar.
I agree with this
But LeBron is different.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
whatever team lEbron James winds up signing for
he will be massively underpaid.
In December, Forbes valued the Cavaliers at $476 million, while similar-sized markets Milwaukee, Indiana and Minnesota were under $260 million. Thats $216 million that can be attributed to him, and him alone. Imagine what his worth is to New York or Chicago?
Not since Shaq in 1996 has there ever been as important a player on the free agent market.
by John Park Williams on Feb 21, 2010 10:45 AM EST up reply actions
I Agree He Wouldn't Be Underpaid
LeBron is the best player in the NBA, and he’s worth more than the maximum NBA salary. That said, I do not want him. Everything I’ve heard about the guy makes me dislike him. I would rather we try to win a championship another way, any other way.
"It's OK for the Bullets to trade baskets, as long as they can score on their end." -- Words of wisdom from Phil Chenier
I really don't understand the LeBron hate
Ok he beat us a number of times, but why would you not want him? He would make us an instant contender and would fill the seats. Obviously I don’t think it will happen, but I would definitely be all for it.
I understand the LeBron hate
He’s only arguably the most loathed opposing athlete in DC this decade, with Sidney Crosby making a late run.
That’s different than saying I understand why people don’t want him.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

I also understand that
But I think people will eventually get excited. It’s just a bit jarring to think of at first.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
1. I’m not sure Arenas (a high usage player that needs the ball) would fit all that well with LeBron (a high usage player that needs the ball)…
2. Besides Gil – there’s little else on the Wizards roster that looks like “Championship” material
3. If LeBron goes anywhere – he’ll choose Miami (with D. Wade)….. because they have enough to sign him PLUS one more mid-range Free Agent (David Lee, Joe Johnson, Boozer, etc….)
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
You're definitely right
But I’d at least look into it. If it fails, it fails, and we move on.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I still think the package deal in NY with Bosh is a possibility
A part of me wonders whether the Knicks know something we don’t because of the cavalier way they dumped so many assets to get enough cap room to get two max guys.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I think you're obligated to look into it.
Any team with cap for a max player basically has to. He’s by far the best player in this game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laydODN6xVk
No
1. Gilbert is a high volume shooter, a ball hog, and a horrid defender.
2. Gilbert does not make his teammates better.
3. Why would Lebron come here?
@rook-Gilbert is not championship material. Name the last team to win who’s number one offensive option was a shoot first point gaurd?
I wouldn't call a guy that averaged 7 assists a game a ball hog....
AND – Gil may not be the player that can lead a team to the Championship – but LeBron James certainly is…
All Gil would have to do is learn to play off Lebron’s lead…. Blatche would be a good piece… Certainly, the Wizards would need some inside muscle (JaVale just won’t cut it for a few years)….
But if the Cavaliers cannot convince LeBron to stay, and New York can’t convince TWO other star players to go there WITH LeBron, and if Miami cannot lure Bron Bron – I don’t see why Washington couldn’t be his 4th choice…..
There are some good young pieces here…. fill it in with all the minimum contract veterans that would WANT to come here after LaBron signs…. and this could be a Championship roster (WITH Gil)…
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Again - lots of stuff would have to fall the Wizards way
but it is not as impossible as you make it out to be…..
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Miami has D Wade ($17 M), Beasley ($5 M), and Cook ($2.1 M) = $23.1 Million for next year….
PLUS LeBron $16.7 (Max Contract) – leaves about $13.3 Million to sign another star (Joe Johnson?, Boozer?, ) and then fill in with Veteran minimum contract guys…..
LeBron James
Dwayne Wade
Michael Beasley
Joe Johnson
That’s a pretty balanced team.
New York has Edy Curry ($11.3 M), Danilo Gallinari ($3.3 M), Wilson Chandler ($2.1 M), Toney Douglas ($1.1 M)..= $27.8 Million…Add LeBron $16.7 that brings the total to $34.5… and if the Cap is $53 Million that would leave about $18.5 – enough to sign Bosh ($16.7 Million) but not much else…
LeBron
Chris Bosh
Danilo Gallinari
Not as good as the Miami base team…
Washington:
$29 Million in 6 players (Including Gil Arenas) , PLUS LeBron James $16.7, leaves about 7.3 Million (Maybe enough to sign a second tier FA…. or maybe Shaq would want to try again….?
LeBron
Gilbert Arenas
Andray Blatche
Al Thornton
Mid Level FA
Not as good as the New York, and definitely not as good as Miami – but still a team that could compete for a Championship…..
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Miami makes the most sense
but I don’t see lEbron signing there.
As a fan of basketball, what I would like to see is DWade and Bosh to Miami, and LBJ and Boozer to New York.

Somehow
I just don’t see LeBron and Wade together. Bosh and Lebron, yes. Johnson and LeBron, yes. But who closes games with the two of the three biggest alpha dogs in the NBA. These are two guys who NEED the ball in crunch time. I just don’t see Miami as a likely stop. I think Miami ends up with Wade, Stoudemire, and someone else like Johnson, and NY picks up the Bosh/LeBron tandem.
Oh, there is no real argument for not wanting the best basketball player in the world. As soon as he put on the teal and bronze, we would all go nuts.

I would answer your second question
but it would force me to say something positive about Isiah Thomas, and…I just can’t.
Or Tony Parker. Or Chauncey Billups.
Or Magic Johnson.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Also
Madison Square Garden is the most famous sports venue in the US…plus the Knicks can sign another superstar to play with Bron…Im sure there are a lot of guy that would want to play with him.

I would not want Lebron on this team.

This is one of those questions that you really can’t answer correctly until you’ve experienced the context. It’s like asking a person who is against the death penalty what he would do to the guy who raped and murdered his mother/wife/girlfriend. You would like to think you would stick to your principles, but you realize there is a chance if it happened you might change your mind.
That’s the way I feel when thinking about LeBron coming here. I just can’t envision myself liking him. But if he did come and won a championship for us, maybe(?) I’d change my mind? I still don’t think I would want LeBron on this team.
"It's OK for the Bullets to trade baskets, as long as they can score on their end." -- Words of wisdom from Phil Chenier
If the Wizards pick 9 or lower
I think we should trade the pick, plus Arenas to the Knicks for Eddy Curry’s expiring contract.
I know I am in the minority on this, but I don’t want to see Arenas ever play again for DC. If we are not lucky in the lottery, and pick 9 or lower (right now, we are slated to pick 9th), I really think we should trade the pick to the Knicks.
If we are somehow able to unload Arenas, we will have an absolute clean slate for the new CBA, and the summer of 2011.

Let's avoid dreaming about Lebron
Every team with cap space thinks they’ll be able to get him. I’ve seen threads about him going to the Kings and the Clippers on other sites. I think it’s down to Miami, Cleveland, and New York with him, probably in that order. Personally, I’d love to see him in a Knicks uniform, especially if McGrady – my personal favorite player – still has it and they can bring in Bosh. A team of
Lebron
TMac
Chandler
Gallinari
Bosh
would be incredibly fun to watch, even though they’d be one injury away from playing a d-leaguer major minutes.

Lebron to Clippers
I really see this being the best fit for him. Kobe and Lakers vs Lebron and Clippers. I think this is the rattling move Lebron wants to make.
Nope, same conference as Kobe
You know David Stern, can’t have his two best players in the same conference. There is no chance they would get to compete for a Championship in the Finals. Stern wants Magic-Bird part deaux. It would be much less entertaining to see their playoff matches in the WCF, just not as memorable. Wherever Lebron goes, it’ll be in the East.

More to the point
I can’t see LeBron a) playing in the same city as Kobe and b) playing for Donald Sterling.
I really think he comes back to the Cavs. Say what you want about Ferry and ownership, but they’ve done everything they can to build a winner around him. Maybe they haven’t gone about it perfectly, but they try. LeBron will realize that.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
clippers have absolutely zero, zilch, NO chance
of landing lebron. NO WAY he takes a contract from sterling.
cavs option #1.
knicks strong consideration b/c of lebron’s apparent yankee/NYC love. but you could argue the knicks just handicapped themselves quite a bit. a lot would have to happen for lebron to go there.
jersey is a tough one ’cause of jay-z, lopez, harris, and a lottery pick. but you really think lebron wants to play in that dump of an arena for two more years?
i don’t see lebron and wade together so that rules out miami for me.
chicago is a perfectly reasonable dark horse. that’d be a good situation for lebron.
sacramento has plenty to offer, but’s it’s not major market so i don’t see it.
like chicago, i think the wiz are a true dark horse candidate, particularly if we get a top pick and/or if mcgee starts showing flashes down the stretch this year. it would not shock me at all if ted lands lebron. Honestly, I think the only person who can help our cause is Obama
If Obama were to call Lebron out, anywhere in any media reference, I think Lebron would start thinking.
Unlike most people, Lebron likes the drama. He likes being the center of attention. He likes being bombarded with the media. If the President were to say something about coming to more wiz games if Lebron were in town, I think Lebron would crave that global spotlight.
Then again, I think Lebron just wants to be the President.
Too bad Obama is more likely to vouch for chicago.
hahahah
thats classic.
But at the same time if we were immensely popular and insanely talented your sophmore year of high school i think our egos would be like his.
we cant really understand his thought pattern. his has so many butt lickers and yes sirs that he thinks he is the most important creation on planet earth.
yeah obama is a bulls fan
but maybe selfishly he’d prefer to have lebron just down the street for the next 7 years.
i wonder how it would play politically if obama took time out of his schedule to make a pitch to lebron? (then again, after the way the olympics pitch went, maybe we don’t want him on our side.)
