Around SBN: How Not To Criticize Tom Brady For The Patriots' Loss

Wizards win, improbably and amazingly

Two amazing stats from tonight:

  1. The lineup of Earl Boykins, Nick Young, Josh Howard, Al Thornton and James Singleton was +19 tonight.
  2. Carmelo Anthony had zero points in the fourth quarter, with Thornton guarding him.
Wow. Wow. Wow.

Hoping for that too..how ironic would that be…get 3 tomorrow at Toronto and 4 vs Chicago…not far fetched … and beyond that? Memphis, NY, NJ, Milwaukee … before Boston on the 7th of March … nice to go at least 6 of 8 before Boston

That's What I'm Talking About

It’s nice for Wizards fans to show some optimism again, even if it is unrealistic. I thought I was browsing the comments section of a mortuary a few days ago.

Depending on how the rest of the season plays out.

I wouldn’t mind seeing howard, singleton, and thornton all in wizards jerseys next season.

Geting it done.

by Knowledge92 on Feb 19, 2010 9:45 PM EST reply actions

Thornton Definitely Will Be

He was one of the young assets with a cheap contract that Ernie picked up to use towards rebuilding. Singleton can probably be had for about half the price of DeShawn Stevenson next season. I wanted to say this after the T-Wolves win, but didn’t have the courage. Maybe (???) we can take the team option on J-Ho? Assuming he continues to play like this, of course.

i actually think

it’s a good bet the team picks up howard’s option. it’s one year. we need to field a team. he would be an asset at the trading deadline next year. we aren’t landing a top free agent this summer.

all the analysis i read of the trade saying they’d dump howard as soon as possible just looks wrong now. assuming he can actually stay healthy.

those nba contract years are something else.

I Would Want All Three

Al is already on the books next season. James could probably be had for about $2 million, unless he keeps playing out of his mind, that is. If we let Foye walk (who I’m not very high on right now), that would put our total team salary at about $38 million, correct me if I’m wrong. That’s still plenty of cap space to fill out our roster and still be below, right?

Yeah, refuse the team option so we can give him the max. Seriously, though, I don’t expect him to keep hitting tough shots, but will be very happy if he can just bring the same hustle and energy to every game.

BTW, you seemed annoyed when Flip kept preaching the word “energy” earlier this season. How would you define what you saw tonight, compared to an average game from the old crew?

Yes -

And Thornton certainly didn’t look like a guy that just chucks up inefficient shots… while providing nothing else….

I was expecting to see Nick Young 2…..

But he played exceptional defense against Carmello, hit the boards a little bit (5 rebounds), had an assist, 2 steals and 4 blocks… So, yeah… maybe he won’t do that every night..and he’ll revert back to something closer to his norm.. but at least we got to see what he can do when motivated.

I’ll give you a pass Rook, since I know you’ve liked NY’s defense this year, but J-Ho had a reputation for being a good defender coming here. Most agree that his defense was always at least above average.

From Hollinger, talking about Thornton
Because of his basic skills, he’s a very good defender in one-on-one situations, whether it’s a perimeter isolation or a post-up. But in more complicated situations he gets lost, tending to lose track of shooters and get caught up in screens off the ball. He’s also not an avid help defender.

If that doesn’t sound just like Nick Young, I don’t know what does……

The other against Thornton is that he didn’t do anything else on the court except score. Not much of a rebounder. Poor basketball IQ. Doesn’t pass. Sometimes has poor shot selection.

I don't want to be negative here, but I think he was trying to make a good first impression

I was at the game tonight and Thornton was incredibly active on defense, constantly moving his hands a la Artest and just messing with Carmelo. There was at least a little bit of jawing back and forth, too. There’s no way he put forth this much effort in LA, is there? I know this might come as a shock, but I don’t really watch too many Clipper games.

by pantslessyoda1 on Feb 19, 2010 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

Interesting point

I was over on the Nuggets game thread (they are not happy) and they were all saying that Thornton had locked down Melo earlier this year. Much like DeShawn forcing Lebron to break the Cavs offense, they believe Thornston forced Melo to go 1 on 1 and break the Nugs.

To Get Out of the Lottery

The Wizards would have to make the playoffs. I figure they will probably have to get around 40 wins to do so. So that would mean they would have to post close to a .750 winning percentage for the remainder of the season. If they did that, they would be so red-hot going into the playoffs that I doubt anyone here would give a rat’s bum about ping pong balls at that point.

That’s why it’s a lottery. No big reason to tank.

Exactly

Even if we come close and fall back in the draft, then we have a team that is capable of coming back next year and being a winner (and isn’t past it’s prime).

If we don’t come close? We’ll get a good pick. Things are looking up as long as we don’t draft a bust (again).

I Wasn't Pessimistic All

I was just stating the facts. Who knows? Anything is possible. Two seasons ago, the Philadelphia 76ers ended their night on February 4th with a record of 18-30. They proceeded to go 22-12 down the stretch (.647 winning percentage) to secure the 7th seed in the playoffs that season. Interestingly enough, they actually went 22-8 (.733 winning percentage) before losing their final 4 games of the season. Anything is possible.

I’ve been at both games this week near the Wizards bench and it seems like a more energetic, excited group than I’ve seen at any time this season (except for the win vs. Orlando after the Gilbert thing initially happened) … they were pumping each other up, standing in advance of great plays…and even Flip cracked a smile or two which has been rare…

But lo and behold, as we took over in the fourth I was out of my seat yelling and cheering.

I don’t know anything about our future, but it was fun to see in person then, and fun again on TV tonight. I’m also getting the impression that it’s more fun to be a Wizard than it was a week ago.

I’m not so gullible as to think this team will win a bunch of games the rest of this year. BUT, with the way they’re playing: with commitment to defense, sharing the basketball (22 assists tonight), playing with energy (diving on the floor, hustling back on defense), playing smart (boxing out, rotations) – - – - – if they continue to play like that, they will be entertaining to watch….

And, as a fan of a rebuilding team, that’s what you want…. something to cheer for…

different guys might finish each game

depending on who’s playing well that night, and what the matchups are. there really isn’t much difference between the starters and the bench talent wise. howard is probably the only guy who will finish most every game.

They seemed hungrier

Like they knew that each time they got playing time that it was an audition. Maybe an argument that the Big 4 had become a bit complacent. We’ve got a bunch of cast aways, quite frankly, at the moment, so there’s a lot to prove.

Just the fact that the shot quota is out the window is refreshing. Also how did Mcgee manage to get up 13 shots in only 22 minutes?

I'm Happy Too

Butler had another poor game for you guys. 16 points on 18 shots is not very efficient. He’s shooting something like 35% for your team. And you’re also paying DeShawn $4 million to watch his beard grow on the bench. Not that you care about salaries with Mark Cuban and all.

Caron just needs to adjust to the playbook

He’s bringing something that Josh wasn’t. EFFORT. Shots are gonna start going in, it’s just a matter of time, getting to know his new teammates and coach more. But Haywood, man, thank god we have him out there while Damp’s out.

by mg4tx on Feb 19, 2010 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

What's the Story With Josh?

I saw nothing but effort from him for us tonight. Why wasn’t he giving any for you guys?

BTW, Caron was shooting terribly even when he was here and knew the playbook. I don’t know what happened to him, but you are going to get sick of seeing him jab-step and take that step-back jumper from about 18 feet 10 times a game. It’s the least efficient shot in basketball and he’s fallen in love with it.

Brendan is a beast, though. He’s the real jewel of that trade for you guys.

Josh got two buddies traded away, got injured too often, never meshed well with Kidd and did some stupid things off-court

He didn’t want to be here, being forced to be the #2 guy.

Caron’s a little bit more all-around, thougher than Josh, he goes to the basket and plays aggresively on both ends. He needs to improve his shot selection, of course, but apart from that, I think he played pretty well.

by mg4tx on Feb 19, 2010 11:21 PM EST up reply actions

If Josh Doesn't Want to Be a #2

Then he might be a good fit here. He can be a big fish in a small pond, since we will probably be rebuilding for the next couple of years. He’ll get more respect.

Is it possible a lot of his problems were caused by him wanting out of Dallas? He seems to want to be here. I don’t know if you caught the game, but he played really well for us tonight. He played aggressively on both ends of the floor and shot very well.

Another Point

Although we picked up a lot of guys in their late 20’s, we did get a lot younger. Consider:

Blatche – 24 years old
Young – 24 years old
Thornton – 26 years old
Howard – 29 years old
Miller – 29 years old
Singleton – 28 years old
McGee – 22 years old
Arenas – 28 years old

That’s a core of relatively young guys we can grow with.

staying medium for a second...

i saw a couple of flaws tonite—

McGee threw up a couple of wild shots with lots of time on the shotclock.

Boykins dribbled too much on several possessions with the shotclock running down.

Foye and Miller had subpar games; Foye in particular was out of sync.

Blatche got a couple of dumb fouls. He cannot afford to foul out anymore, because he’s the go-to scorer now.

7 Day Dray is Back

Despite a poor second half, here was his line:

18 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, only 2 turnovers in 28 minutes of play. Combine that with his 33 points and 13 rebounds from the last game, and I’d say he’s starting to put together a tiny bit of consistency.

Yeah, yeah, it’s only two games. Who cares, we deserve some hope at this point.

I think the veterans (and a certain former coach) on the team had a habit of picking on him constantly, either because his effort, his performance, or just because (poop in shoe). Now that those guys are gone, he’s given the starting role and oodles of minutes, and his teammates are cheering him on and pumping him up, his confidence level has risen dramatically.

HOLY SHIT!!!

was at the game and was suprised to see us play defense, and hustle, and work the shot clock more than 6 seconds consistently. From what I have seen tonight i get the feeling that the team we currently have is a bunch of good solid role players and we are one mega star or two bonafide stars away from being a contending team. I know getting a player(s) like that is extremely difficult which is why we are embarking on this rebuilding process, but i feel we are closer to the turnaround then most people think. Maybe gilbert can return and be that mega star he once was. Maybe blatche or one of the young guys can develop into a bonafide star. All I’m saying is that i love the current collection of guys we have (thornton, young, mcgee, howard, blatche, miller, foye, boykins(!!!), singleton) and I wouldn’t mind and actually want us to keep as many of them as possible while still leaving us with the cap room and flexiblity to find that new core of a couple star players we need to become a contender. god i can’t remember the last time we played like this and the phonebooth was rocking. Now i want to get rid of gilbert by next season so badly because i fear that he may come back and completely ruin these new wizards who play with so much more energy, heart, and passion, and are legitamitely fun to watch even when we are losing. I have never been so happy with the wizards when they have been down by 9 in a game than i was tonight. I mean they were trying their absolute hardest and that’s all a true fan can ask for. Haha I can’t wait for the next game.

The Wizards, for the foreseeable future, are the minor leagues of pro basketball, right there with the Nets, Clippers, Warriors and Timberwolves . . . in other words the bottom feeders of the NBA. The Wizards, for the foreseeable future, will stink. The Wizards are ground zero. They’re irrelevant outside of Washington. It’s quite possible that over the final 30 games of the season the Wizards will be the worst team in the NBA, worse than the five-win Nets. You think I’m exaggerating? I’ll take the Nets when they play the Wizards on Feb. 28 up there and April 4 here.

He's coming back

The Wizards aren’t dumb enough to try and void his contract, so they’re going to have him on the floor game one next year.* If he plays great and increases his trade value on a bad team, awesome. If he plays great and the team turns out to be competitive, better. I have to admit I miss the dude and would like to have him back. He’d be great as the #1 scoring option on this team.

I'm gullible

but I’m inclined to take Ernie at his word for the things he said yesterday….

Gil

I wouldn’t say he’s a cancer. As far as I can tell, barring the gun incident, he’s been a good guy to be around. I know this quote as been thrown around constantly since Grunfeld used it, but it’s a pretty accurate description of the group of guys we trotted out here at the beginning of the season: the group grew stale. Gil out too long, too many guys constantly getting inured, no consistency in player rotations, etc. That killed this team. Add to that the coaching change and other things….. I dunno. I just feel like the whole organization from top to bottom was just worn out, worn thin.

My thoughts on Gil returning are positive. I hope he does. Beyond the fact that I feel as though I relate to him well, as a somewhat eccentric guy who tends to flip the bird to authority, I believe he can still be the star of this team. I think many people don’t understand (and how could they?) all that Gil has gone through over the past couple years, and the expectations coming into this season, all the eyes watching him, judging him. And of course the eyes did watch and judge. The guy plays thirty some odd professional games after rehabbing a busted up knee over two years and everyone expects him to be a surgical point guard right away. Jesus, even Christ himself couldn’t perform that miracle.

Anyway, I’ve gone on somewhat of a digression. My point is this: Gil is, I think, a great locker room guy and teammate. He’s not the consummate professional that Jamison is, but that’s not his fault; that’s not his personality type. It doesn’t mean he still can’t be a leader on the court and off the court. I hope that this gun incident has caused some sort of growth of professionalism in him, however, even if it’s only enough to temper his devil-may-care attitude, prevent him from pooping in shoes, and doing outrageously foolish things such as bringing guns to a locker room (prank or not).

I think energy, enthusiasm and hustle are infectious things. If the team continues to play hard through the rest of the season, and we keep a lot of these guys who perform well I think you’ll see that hustle and energy permeate Gil next season.

Maybe Gil needed a change of scenery himself. But there’s more than one way of changing the scenery. In this case trade the stale crusts of bread for new, but keep the core, that despite being surrounded by those stale, crusty pieces is still fresh.

Agreed

Good points. I would add that at one point Gil was very annoyed at Caron for breaking the offense constantly. I think that, combined with Antawn’s shot jacking, contributed to limiting Gil’s effectiveness. Even Brendan would jack up a shot every now and then just to get his stats up in his contract year. Now that those guys are gone, I think Gilbert can really take this team to the next level if he dedicates himself to doing that.

I agree about Gil

I was on the Bosh tip up until after the trades…now I kinda like having the cap room, plus starting Dray at the 4. I like most of the team as is (with Howard and Miller at lower rates), bring back Gil, bring in the two first rounders at least, maybe a marginal free agent or two…maybe lose Foye? Maybe I’m too amped about this new energy after two games but I think we may be on to something with this group. But the good thing is even if not we can afford to pay for higher-tier players (now those players want to come here is another story)

Anything think we should get David Lee?

We’re probably not going to get Bosh, Dwade, or Bron but David Lee would be a monster fit. The dude owns the boards, and plays old school back to the basket offensive game. He can play forward and center. We have way too much wing players.

Earl Boykins Was +18

I know everybody here still hates on him, but lately he has been much more effective than Randy Foye, who incidentally was a -6. This is one of the reasons I would like to renounce Foye and try to acquire a cheaper and/or better PG.

Tonight was a display

Of just getting the fundimentals right coupled with some players playing
with a chip on there shoulder, Im not sure we keep that up too often but I do
prefer this lot down the stretch in close 4th quarters to what we seen with the
big 3 in there earlier in the season where we chucked games away or limped
over the line.

Is this better?

Putting forth dedicated effort to efficaciously limiting the amount of times the other team puts the basketball through the rim from the topside, whilst simultaneously maximizing the proportion of accomplishing the same when the opposing team commits a rules infraction.

This is where we see Flip’s coaching chops come in. .500 the rest of this year is possible, and the basketball gods smile on teams who don’t tank. John Wall? Why not? Do the Nets really deserve him?

Acutally meant the Wiz tanking

I saw the Nets game on Halloween. When it ended I stood up, applauded, put my jacket on, and realized it was just the end of the third quarter. I know they’re that bad.

I Commented on This Somewhere Else

Yes, I think because it forced Ernie’s hand. If Gil hadn’t of gotten in trouble, the Wiz might still be limping along and both the Pollin’s and Ernie would have held out hope for a playoff run with those guys.

Far stanger things have happened.

Remember, Memphis made what was supposed to be the worst move in NBA history trading Pau Gasol and look what’s happened to them…

I’ve been pretty positive about this situation the whole time. It’s never been as bad as everyone thinks.

Memphis isn't there yet

and they could lose Rudy Gay in free agency so the jury is still not on whether they got completely robbed

I LoveThis New Team

It’s like the misfits, the bad news bears, the castaways…they’re all playing with chips on their shoulders and the enthusiasm is well appreciated for us as fans that had gotten used to the mundane effort. I can’t reasonably expect them to play and score and pass and defend this well every night, but I can expect them to give good energy and cohesion every night.

by Edward TheThird on Feb 20, 2010 1:54 AM EST reply actions

The Replacements is not appropriate

Wilbon et al have called this a D-League quality team. Really?

The starting lineup with Foye, Miller, Howard and Blatche is awfully talented, with people being far too down on Howard and really underestimating Blatche.

This team needs to get a legit 5 and a pure PG besides Boykins and they’ll be right back in it. Adding Gil and perhaps Greg Monroe or Cousins would make this squad awfully promising in no time.

by JonathanJoseph on Feb 20, 2010 1:59 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed

Not quite sold on McGee…I too think we only need a for real 5 and we’re back in the ballgame…there doesn’t seem to be a lot via free agency, but hey we’ll have two chances in the first round to do it during the draft. Ernie HAS to redeem himself and nail this draft. Only potential snag: if Howard comes back, at a lower rate, who stars, him or Thonrton?

by Edward TheThird on Feb 20, 2010 2:02 AM EST up reply actions

Disagree

I think it does matter to Josh, who I think felt disrespected by Dallas towards the end. Start Howard, but give both similar minutes.

Thought

Let me preface this by saying I am a Gil fan and I want him to stay, but if they were to trade him, how would you guys feel about a Gil for Deron Williams(filler where needed)? He seems pretty pissed in Utah after trading Brewer. He said the other teams in the West got better and they got worse and said something like, “that’s why I signed a three-year deal.” His salary is comparable to Gil’s but shorter. Would that be a possible move at some point? I can’t believe I’m thinking and typing this.

Clippers fan here

Nice win tonight guys. Wow Thornton really did a solid job off the bench! He wasn’t a major force with the Clippers but he was certainly a nice player to have. He definitely needs to stick to attacking the basket. He’s got a very good first step and is a solid finisher around the rim. And when he can hit the mid range jumper, he’s just awesome to watch.

His major problem is consistency and sticking to what he’s good at (attack, attack, attack). Hope he does well for you guys. He will be missed, at least by this fan :)

by dulciusEXasperis on Feb 20, 2010 3:24 AM EST reply actions

Thanks

I guess we’ll just have to get used to a forward who has loads of potential and puts up great performances every now and then, but lacks some consistency. We’ve never had to go through that before, so it will take some time getting used to.

Defense, Defense, Defense

It was great how this team brought the crowd back into the game in the 4th Q. It felt completely dead in there after the 3rd. It was amazing to see stomp down defense played in the 4th Quarter. Great win!

by Kuruption on Feb 20, 2010 3:41 AM EST reply actions

I disagree

the crowd was pretty into the game the first half with Blatche and McGee both playing well. That Singleton block definitely lit the crowd up for the rest of the game though

by DaGribb on Feb 20, 2010 8:24 AM EST up reply actions

So what should we do with Z?

My preference is to keep him to spite Cleveland. (And then he can help us beat them in the first round). I guess the logical thing is to buy him out. It really is a shame we couldn’t/didn’t trade him. Mike mentioned issues with passing physicals – not sure how that affected things.

by Palace of Good Play's Golden Toilet on Feb 20, 2010 3:47 AM EST reply actions

Who would we trade him to, and for who?

He’s a big expiring, which is what we need. Unless we’re getting one back it’s no help.

by RamV on Feb 20, 2010 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

My thoughts were that we should trade him

and other expirings for deals that expire in 2011 to a team desperate to clear space this summer since I don’t think we’re going to be big players.

Naw

He has already said in so many words that he doesn’t want to be here. Let’s not ruin the chemistry we appear to have by forcing a guy to play who obviously wouldn’t bring any hunger and desire to the table.

Anybody watch "Lost"?

I feel like we’re in the “flash-sideways” world, that alternate universe where everything is turned on its head…. young guys playing like professionals, J. Ho playing with inspiration, Antawn going 0-12… Now the question is will this become reality? I’m not convinced… but it sure is nice to have something to watch again!!!!
