Around SBN: Upon Further Review: Bo Knows Longreads

"Right now I'm a Wizard,'' he said. "I think eventually they'll let me go, but that's just my guess. They haven't told me anything yet. First I've got to go to Washington, and hopefully after a couple of days they'll let me go home.''

Zydrunas Ilgauskas to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer's Mary Schmitt Boyer. Z's apparently on his way to DC as we speak. Brian Windhorst says he's coming to get his physical and will wear #17, for now.

Hurray buyout!

No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

'm not sure Donald Sterling is a human being. He had to have been manufactured by someone, possibly David Stern, so that one team could solely just make profit for the NBA while doing nothing good for themselves. -- Aykis 16

So you're saying the Wizards should keep him around, then?

yes, make him suffer by keeping around and have him watch as lebron and the guy who took his job shaq win a title

Why do I have to suffer too in this plan?

Z doesn’t seem like that bad a guy, and I know I’m not.

I completely agree with this

if he wants out so bad, he should pay us. It doesn’t hurt us to have him on our roster.

Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!

Yes it does

It costs more money to keep him on the roster than to buy him out.

Oh and I’d guess the wink-wink deal is our incentive.

depends on the buyout

by MR on Feb 19, 2010 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

Don't know of any buyout ever

that didn’t cost less to the team. That’s the whole point.

If he's bitching the whole time about wanting out

That might have a negative effect. Just saying…

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Worse than JHo?

Honestly, I cannot believe Cleveland isn’t catching more heat for trAding ther oldest tenure player. And I don’t like hearin that we owe it to Z to let him go back to Cleveland. We owe him jack. We owe Cleveland jack. If he wants to sit at home then that’s frat, we can fine him and take his pay. But don’t bitch about coming to DC, we didn’t trade his ass outta town.

Howard wants to be here

Or at least, he doesn’t want to be in Dallas anymore. The two situations aren’t even remotely similar.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Mike

There are a million careers in America where you can be reassigned or moved unexpectedly. If you don’t want to move, you leave the money on the table and look for a new job. This is one issue 1A of the the current CBA. It sets a terrible precedent that anytime a player comes to a new situation, he can bitch his way into GETTING MONEY for the purpose of him not playing for your team.

My major problem was not to draw a comparison between Howard and Z, but to point out that it is pretty rich that I am supposed to feel terrible for Z because he was the longest tenured Cavalier and has a young family. What about Ross’ and Singleton’s families? What about Howard’s weed dealer? Those people are probably effected by this is well. So actually, we don’t OWE Z anything.

I don't disagree

I’m not here to defend the practice of buyouts and the like. It’s a loophole that has to be closed at some point. I’m just saying, from the team’s perspective, it doesn’t make at this stage of rebuilding to employ a guy who obviously doesn’t want to be here, when a bad attitude could rub off on the young guys who do want to be here. What happens when McGee gets more minutes than Z because the Wizards want to see what they have in JaVale? You really don’t think Z’s going to try to sabotage that?

It’s just not worth it. So we take a stand and say “Eff you Z and the Cavs.” What exactly does that accomplish other than making us feel good about ourselves?

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 19, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

In other words

In a world where rebuilding NBA teams need to choose their battles, this one just isn’t worth it.

Now, I do think we should tell Z that he needs to leave a good chunk of his salary on the table to leave, but that’s all.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

I get that

I really do. It just bothers me that he won’t show up, play ball, and keep his mouth closed. I am going to be almighty ticked if the Wizards pay anything more that 50% of his remaining worth to get him off the team.

by Sean Fagan on Feb 19, 2010 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

I think you guys are missing something...

If we got him to play him, he’ll play. If not, he’ll get voided. That’s cut-and-dried in the CBA.

The only reasons that wouldn’t happen is if his contract is worth something and can be traded (meaning we wouldn’t want to void it), or if he’ll agree to a buyout we like.

The buyout, in this case and most others, is basically a win-win.

Can't we have one game

where we chant “Cleveland Sucks” and “Over-rated!” at Z while he half-heartedly runs up and down the court?

Pettiness is all we have at this point.

by disgrunted on Feb 19, 2010 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

Is there a deadline for buyouts?

I don’t see the harm in trying him out for at least a couple of games. It could get us some wins. If he still wants a buyout afterwards he can have one.

Geting it done.

Pound of Flesh

As a Wizards season ticket holder, I want my pound of flesh. And that pound of flesh is the ability to hurl “Bol from night court jokes” at Z for the rest of the seaon….

by Section 8 on Feb 19, 2010 1:49 PM EST reply actions

Not very smart of Z

His agent must be really annoyed. This just gives the Wizards more leverage. What he should be doing is talking about how he loves DC, and that if he can’t go to the playoffs with the Cavs, partying every night with Howard and the young Wizards will be lots of fun. Makes us wonder if he’ll take a low buyout, and really want him to that much more. The Wizards should take their time low-balling him, meanwhile reminding him that they’re already under the luxtax, and that they’re hesitant to help the Cavs because other GMs and owners are griping about it.

Maybe a JJ Hickson for Big Z trade is in order?

Or, I heard that Jamison guy has some skillz.

Let it snow- ping-pong balls, from the heavens.

HAHAHA

Amen to that. Hold Z hostage and Hickson will play the part of ransom!

If Susan O'Malley was still around

She would have already put together a “Come see Z” marketing campaign to sell tickets.
