Ernie got the Wizzies into this mess...
and now he has begun to bail them out of it. From Lux tax payer to beneficiary, a boatload of expirings, some earnest and reasonably skilled bench guys, a chance for Dray and JVM to prove themselves…. more bucks for the Pollins based on a better balance sheet….
But Banquo’s ghost still sits at the table.
This will be a pretty busy site considering the likelihood of 30-52 or thereabouts (which would still be +11 over last season for those who are into Pyrrhic victories)
Abe got us into this mess
I doubt Gil’s and AJ’s contracts came from anybody but Abe. If Abe said to sign them, then EG was going to sign them. You didn’t win an argument with Abe. I have no love for EG, but he is the man that moved Kwame for Caron. He can’t be totally incompetent.
and traded for AJ
signed Gilbert and Hughes, let Hughes and Jeffries walk, sign DS the first time. He’s the only reason we have seen even a modicum of success.

The 2nd rounder from Sacramento
is for 2010 according to Michael Lee on Twitter.
No David Lee please.

why do the people who we get back want to take buyouts? big z and drew gooden what they are both too good to play in dc. if im not mistaken drew gooden has played on 8 differnt teams
Ilgauskas was playing on the best team in the league. Gooden was playing on a strong contender in the West. They’d be playing for absolutely nothing down the stretch. They’d rather accept a buyout and go to a team that has a chance to win something this year.

buyouts benefit us
z isn’t playing for much longer, and gooden isn’t an essential piece. wiz would rather have the cap space so we might be able to pick up some picks by trading for other teams’ bad contracts
The buyouts wouldn't help our cap space
They are both expiring contracts.
Yes, they would
When you “negotiate” a buyout, you pay the guy to walk, but for less money than his contract. So we save cap money this year. But I do agree with the initial sentiment. This is a business, and guys get traded. If you don’t like it, so what. If I were Ernie, and these guys were whining to me about wanting a buyout so they could pick their own team, I’d offer them 5 bucks.
This is why expiring contracts are valuable.
It doesn’t affect the cap since he won’t be in our cap number in any case. His contract expires before free agent season.
I’m disappointed that it came to this. I thought this group had a chance to be good together — maybe not title worthy — but a strong team. But guys kept getting hurt and then they sucked when everyone came together and then Gil got hurt and the team ends up having no choice but to push the reset button.
As for the deals — I was disappointed they didn’t get more for Butler and Haywood. I thought Haywood was too valuable to be used as an enticement for a rich team to eat a bad contract (Stevenson’s). It would have been good to get Dallas’s pick.
The Jamison deal was okay, but not great. But, it was also necessary once they dealt Butler and Haywood. I don’t think Thornton will amount to much, but at least they got Cleveland’s pick.
Bright side of all this is that they got under the luxury tax, they created cap space, and they established a clear path to getting competitive again.
They did okay given the situation they were in.

Thornton wasn’t really part of the AJ return. Since he was swapped for Gooden it was essentially Haywood & DSteve for Thornton, Ross & Singleton.

Maybe it's time to cut a sponsorship deal with GEICO...
… and change our logo (and maybe even team name?) to that stack of cash with googly eyes.
Kids would love it! They could give out googly-eyed plush cash stacks at the game.
$25 million in cap space
That seems like some real money. Now if we can just peddle Gilbert to the Nets or the Knicks, we’re in business.
25 mill in cap space. how many 2010 Fa’s does that get-1 to pair with gil im guessing a chris bosh signing
It won't be a Max guy
But we might be able to get two next-tier guys? (Rudy Gay, etc.). I’m not saying that’s the right play, just saying it’s likely do-able.
Like the cap space and extra pics
Don’t like much else. I suppose Josh Howard could revive his career and Singleton is a decent player. I think the Celtics deal that was talked about was a much better deal than any of the ones made here.
What are the chances that with Cle’s first round and Sacramento’s second rounder that we could use those to move up in the draft if the Wizards don’t get 1 or 2?

In all seriousness
I have to give Ernie a pass because he has a good reputation as a horse trader. However, this entire situation might have been either avoided or mitigated if we had someone on the staff who could properly evaluate talent. Because no one was banding down the door asking for Nick Young or JaVale McGee.
Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!
yeah he is a great trader bad drafter IMO
We talk a bunch of sh** now but he built this team out of nothing with great trades and signings. I see the last 2 years as Abe’s dying wish and then Irene’s money grab.

i'll give ernie some credit
getting under the lux tax, not taking on any long term salary, and still fielding 12 bodies after the inevitable buyouts (even with arenas and crittendon indisposed) – that’s a somewhat complicated thing to accomplish.
as a fan, i’d prefer to maybe eat some of the lux tax this year (since we dug ourselves that hole to begin with) and get more prospects or picks out of our trades, but oh well. time to move on.
i also don’t think that foye/miller deal looks that bad in hindsight. both those guys are starting for us for the rest of the year (i’m glad we have them right now) and they have no long term salary so we retain flexibility there.
as for josh howard in and $25 million in cap room in, i feel like that’s kind of an either/or. in terms of next year, you can’t have both. which will we choose, i wonder? same goes for miller and foye.
i don’t think we’re getting one or two of lebron, wade, bosh, or amare in here. don’t want to pay the price tag on the other guys out there. i’m thinking more and more that i’m not sure we got enough good picks or prospects to let howard go next year. we do have to field a team. at least for half the year.

Is the pick from Cle definitely 2010?
Everyone just seems to be reporting it as a first round pick.
Aw
I’m gonna miss Taser.

Yeah
Singleton is better, maybe Taser may grow but Singleton is better now and has a better offensive game. Is the trade official?
Back to the (good?) old years...
It’s been a truly devastating week. watching the first bullets/wizards team in my lifetime to ever get me excited about winning walk away was hard.
but, the last couple years have been really frustrating. the team has been in a horrible limbo. i remember watching games against golden state and sacramento in January 2009 and realizing we were doing something wrong. even though we were waiting for our injury bug to pass, there was a nagging sense that these guys were never going to get over the hump.
it kills to see these guys go. especially jamison to cle. i wish him well, but this is like mussina all over again. i am actually really happy that jamison is not suiting up tonight. can’t handle it.
anyhow. i had alot of fun rooting for cheney/googs/maclean/skiles/duck/stewart squads. i guess it’s back to those years. which is fine. the younger fans need this kind of character-building.

Jamison post script
Twan just referred to the Wiz as “we” during courtside interview with TNT. Guess he’s not over it either.
Forget the Record Predictions
It was a good emotional win on Wednesday but I can’t bring myself to a end of season record projection just yet BUT … I will predict this: We get our first three game winning streak in years sometime before the season is out.
