Kings to acquire Washington's Dominic McGuire for a future second round pick and cash, a source close to the Wizards tells me.

I accidentally buried this news from Sam Amick of the Sacramento Bee.

Amick updates that the Kings are the ones getting cash, not Washington.

UPDATE: Wizards press release says the second-round pick is protected. Boo.

We're PAYING them?

This is the stupidest team on earth.
“Please, take our successful second round find so we can try to find another one in a year and a half. No? Well what if we give you a bucket full of cash?”

by sierradave on Feb 18, 2010 4:09 PM EST reply actions

No.

Getting under the line means we don’t need to pay the tax AND we get our piece of the tax distribution. Being $483k over the line costs us something like $6MM more than being $1 under the line.

If I had to guess I’d say we paid them just enough to pay his salary for the rest of the year, which is like $300k, plus a bit more to get the draft pick as well.

by RamV on Feb 18, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, makes sense

I just caught the part about the pick being protected. Clearly thrown in only because both parties have to give something up in a “trade”.

So, what decent defenders do we have left?

by Fundefined on Feb 18, 2010 4:12 PM EST reply actions

JHo, Singleton, Ross

Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!

blatche qualifies as decent

Foye's ok, too

Depends on the matchups. He’s competent when he’s not overmatched physically, though.

by pantslessyoda1 on Feb 18, 2010 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

it's funny

how none of those names were part of the Wizards organization till jut a couple days ago.

by young, loud and Scotty on Feb 18, 2010 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Our defense might actually get a little bit better

Jamison was such a huge liability and Blatche is at the very least ok. Haywood was obviously great, but Blatche and Javale can switch based on matchups and, so long as we don’t run into too many big, strong, traditional back to the basket bigs, we’ll be ok.

by pantslessyoda1 on Feb 18, 2010 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

So wait

if we are under by sending out Taser, do we keep Z just as a big middle finger to Cleveland?

Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!

by Sean Fagan on Feb 18, 2010 4:12 PM EST reply actions

Depends

On what buy out he’ll take. He’s clearly not worth the money to us, but he’s going to have to work with us on the buy-out. I think he will.

by RamV on Feb 18, 2010 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

God I would love to

He wouldn’t even have to show, just stay on the inactive list for the rest of the season. I can’t think of anything better to do with him.

by imperialme on Feb 18, 2010 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

One to none

So we are getting rid of the only hustle player that we have on the roster, for a second round pick that we are paying for? This is bonkers. The cap-cutting has gone too far. We are this desperate to get rid of a 1-mill contract????

by morethesamewiz on Feb 18, 2010 4:15 PM EST reply actions

Michael Lee says it’s about $4.5 million.

Entering the day, the Wizards were about $500,000 above the luxury tax penalty, but by moving McGuire’s $825,000 contract to the Kings, they moved under the tax line – and made another $4 million.

link

Still, a very significant difference.

by Aldo on Feb 18, 2010 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

Miller, Howard, Thornton, Singleton – they all can play McGuire’s position.

by Johnnie Futbol on Feb 18, 2010 4:20 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

And

They are all better than McGuire

by lj15 on Feb 18, 2010 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

True

This might be a net positive for his career. Would the Kings really play Nocioni that much? I’d think they’d be able to find him ten or fifteen minutes behind Nocioni and Green.

by pantslessyoda1 on Feb 18, 2010 8:53 PM EST up reply actions

Roster space?

Only way I feel good about this is if this prefaces something else.

I’d be really pissed if we didn’t just pick up Singleton.

by mamemimo on Feb 18, 2010 4:19 PM EST via mobile reply actions

gonna miss him but

Singleton does seem like a future version of dominic so to keep both of them is unecessary

fully i agree

i WANTED mcguire to blossom, but he hadn’t, so i’m ok with this.

But Singleton is a lot older...

Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

wow

talk about some serious cleansing.

mcguire was always mediocre to me, and his defense was over rated

by stanis on Feb 18, 2010 4:24 PM EST reply actions

Few and far between

when a player like Dom comes into the league and sticks with his first team. He needs development and thats not really what the Wizards or Flip are all about.

by Jheiser3 on Feb 18, 2010 4:27 PM EST reply actions

well, they had better shift to development pretty damn quick

in my opinion.

McGuire was not developed...

now was McGee… Do we see any hope for future growth of these young guys? Only if changes are made in the mind set of front office & the coaching staff..

Really gonna miss McGuire… I remember when tey let him play every night….

by 2StepsAway on Feb 18, 2010 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

Look, one million less to Taser next year

is one million more that we can pay someone else, theoretically. Maybe Ernie is more serious about going after a 2010 name player than we realize.

by Tbonebullets on Feb 18, 2010 4:27 PM EST reply actions

More leverage with Big Z too because of this

According to Wog-

“Wiz will still buyout Ilgauskas, source says, but they’ve created lot of leverage by getting under tax. He’ll have to pay for his freedom.”

by Dalp on Feb 18, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

AND we can move up in the draft much easier

with a late first and two seconds just a couple of picks later. Some team out there is not going to want to pay first money but may pay for two second round picks. So with a trade like that we could end up with two late first round picks, and try to move up some more.

by Tbonebullets on Feb 18, 2010 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

True

Isn’t this draft considered to be a deep one? If so, I am sure some team would want to move down and get plenty of players. At the same time I think that should be us that wants a lot of players in this draft

well, i advocated releasing mcguire a couple years back

yet still i’m sad he’s the one we dump from the young, blatche, mcguire triumverate.

i didn’t think he was particularly good, but he was physical and tried to maximize the talent he had. he was a great shot blocker. if only he was a little bit taller or quicker. nba is tough.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Feb 18, 2010 4:47 PM EST reply actions

If he was a little taller or quicker

He wouldn’t likely be a Wizard. NBA is indeed tough.

by bronco6778 on Feb 18, 2010 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

Edit

Likely never would have been a Wizard

by bronco6778 on Feb 18, 2010 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

Look ma, no lux tax...

Taser goes close to home in Sactown, which is kinda nice. No question about his effort, but as others have pointed out, you get effort plus higher skills from Singleton for about the same price.

We do have a pile of 2010 draft picks in the 30 – 36 range to go along with (name him not).

by khrabb on Feb 18, 2010 4:57 PM EST reply actions

NOO

A) How do we not trade for an equivalent contract from someone like the Clippers and pick up a 2nd round pick?
B) How did we not get Landry for Butler in a similar 3-way if the Kings are trading for a SF like McGuire?
C) This is SO STUPID. I hate this. Don’t we want to teach our forthcoming young ‘uns how to hustle?
D) Can’t wait to see how mad Blatche and NY are

...one of those guys who reads all the time but barely comments

by Juice over Whine on Feb 18, 2010 5:57 PM EST reply actions

We didn't get Landry because the Rockets have three decent power forwards and no true shooting guard

Butler’s redundant if you’ve already got Battier, Ariza, and Buddinger. He’s at best a marginal improvement over two of those guys and gets paid almost ten times as much as the other.

by pantslessyoda1 on Feb 18, 2010 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

Right, which is why it would be a 3-way

Protected?

This is starting to remind me of the Navarro trade. A protected 2nd rounder? What are the details on the protection? Can’t be in the top 40? I have a feeling the Kings want to push it out a year.

by Jheiser3 on Feb 18, 2010 9:05 PM EST reply actions

It’s probably protected for slits 31-45 or some such thing. It appears it’s only there because there has to be something exchanged in a trade – you can’t purely pay someone to take your guy (or give him away for free).

by RamV on Feb 18, 2010 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

Dominic could be a good cheerleader for a team if he grew long hair

by Unxpekted on Feb 18, 2010 9:22 PM EST reply actions

I'm sure you guys will be stoked to hear this...

Per Ziller (guy who runs Sactown Royalty SB Nation blog):

I’m told the protected 2010 second-round pick conveyed to Washington in the McGuire deal has “no chance” of actually being sent.

Sorry guys…looks like it was McGuire for tax freedom, which is still a nice deal for you guys.
