Antawn Jamison traded to Cavaliers, Wizards get Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Al Thornton, Cavaliers 1st
Weird scene at Verizon Center earlier tonight. Before Flip Saunders talked to the media, Wizards PR took him aside for a few minutes. He later returned, but that had never happened before.
Maybe it's because the Wizards are closing in on a deal to trade Antawn Jamison to the Cavaliers, according to Michael Lee. Lee reports that Washington's getting at least Zydrunas Ilgauskas and a first-round pick back. He also reports that Drew Gooden is headed to some Western Conference team, which explains why he isn't even in the building right now.
Scroll down for the game thread if you wish. Discuss the trade here. I'm personally relieved that we can now begin the rebuilding process.
UPDATE: Adrian Wojnarowski tweets that the Clippers are the Western Conferece team. I wonder if this means we're getting Sebastian Telfiar/Al Thornton. Hmm...
UPDATE 2: The trade, according to Wojnarowski, is Jamison and Sebastian Telfair to Cleveland, Drew Gooden to the Clippers and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Al Thornton, Brian Skinner and Cleveland's first-round pick here. Actually, that's not so terrible, even though I'm not a fan of Thornton.
UPDATE 3: BIG NEWS FOLKS! WE ALSO GET THE RIGHTS TO SOME DUDE NAMED EMIL PRELDZIC!!
The Wizards also get the rights to former Cavs pick, Emil Preldzic, a source said.
UPDATE 4: Actually, it's Emir Preldzic, and here's his Draft Express page.
Also, I missed this, but apparently reporters tried chasing Antawn Jamison down. He didn't want to talk, and got in a car with Drew Gooden in the passenger seat. Weird.
UPDATE 5: According to Ric Bucher, Brian Skinner is not in the deal. This means that, if my calculations are correct...
(Wait for it)
(Wait for it)
(Wait for it)
WE'RE UNDER THE LUXURY TAX!!!
UPDATE 6: The trade is official. The Wizards sent out a press release that didn't include Brian Skinner's name in it. First two paragraphs of the release below the jump. Also, Ilgauskas apparently has a trade kicker, so we might not totally be under the tax after all. The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Brian Windhorst talked to Ilgauskas' agent, who said he's going to try to work out a buyout.
WASHINGTON, DC - Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has completed a three-team deal in which they acquired Al Thornton from the Los Angeles Clippers and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, a 2010 first round pick and the rights to Emir Preldzic from the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Wizards sent Antawn Jamison to Cleveland and Drew Gooden to Los Angeles while the Clippers sent Sebastian Telfair to Cleveland to complete the trade.
"Antawn Jamison has been the embodiment of leadership on and off the court for this franchise for five-and-a-half seasons and we thank him for all he has done for the Wizards and the city of Washington," said Grunfeld. "Unfortunately, our on-court results have not met our expectations and we felt it was necessary to make changes to improve our future and our financial flexibility. This trade accomplished both of those objectives."

Thanks Tawn
I got mad at you a couple times this year even if I got why you were making me mad. At least you know you can come back here and have the PA announcer get your name right. (looking at you Orlando.)
Well if Wash gets a 1st round pick from Cle and cap relief
That’s really something. It’s better than nothing. It doesn’t change anything with Gil, but if the Wiz kept Jamison & Butler things would have likely devolved with Gil around.
This is a good thing for the Wiz if Jamison goes to the Wiz. I don’t know that it would change the perception of the franchise from outside players, but showing class in dealing with Jamison & Butler could help how the Wiz are perceived in time. (Longshot I know.)

I'm sure the Wiz faithful have very little reason to like the Cleveland Crabdribblers.

it would be crazy if Jamison injured Labron in practice since he not familar with playing with him …. wow that would be sweeet lol
You just said that Jamison would injure Bron-Bron.

I wonder if the WCF team is Portland

So the 30th+ pick in the draft
So the Wizards are walking out of this mess without one young player. I know the market is what it is, but that’s hard to believe.
FIRE SALE!
And who’s left of our starting 5?
Gilbert Arenas? So ironic. Bloody ironic.
My swag was phenomenal.

Lee mentions a 3 team trade including Gooden… How does Gooden get dealt in that scenario given the restrictions on trading him again “with other players”? I guess he would have to be the only player headed to the WC team?
Ah, got it

Hmmm Thornton.
Not a big fan of him personally. But Wiz fans will find out about him.

Clipps picked up his option for next year.
Be careful what you wish for. I haven’t seen a ton of Nick Young because I don’t watch a ton of Wiz games honestly, but I’ve seen plenty of Clipper games with Thornton. He is not the answer if you ask me. I think the Wiz are doing this deal because it gets them closer to being under the tax. In fact, that’s exactly why they’re doing the deal.

I'm counting $1.9 million saved total
Jamison and Gooden out: $16.2 million
Z, Thornton and Skinner in: $14.3 million

You are probably right
I just took a quick look at the Gooden for the Clips part of it using hoopshype numbers.

Yep.
I think EG and the Pollins/Leonsis knew that it wasn’t possible to save money and get under the tax unless they did 3 or 4 separate deals to accomplish it. I had a feeling this was the case, when the original Butler/Haywood trade was made and now it’s obvious to all that was the goal from the beginning. There’s just no advantage if you’re EG to announce it head of time. Teams already know what you’re doing, and the fans can figure it out after the fact. But announcing it ahead of time has no advantage to getting deals done.

Let's just hope they are honest
and don’t invest too much into any of these scraps (Thornton, Ross, Singleton). They need to admit that as of now, we have very little to build in and are in the process of finding our rebuilding pieces.

Moving Big Z
Any chance Ernie has the foresight to move Ilgauskas to a WC team looking for a playoff center? Sacramento for Kenny Thomas’ expiring contract, Udoka and a future consideration?
-OKC for Etan’s expiring contract and Eric Maynor?
Both of those reduce the payroll even further, and might keep Z from returning to Cleveland, insert nefarious laughter..

Cavs get Jamison and Telfair, Clippers get Drew Gooden and Wash gets Illgauskas, Al Thornton and Brian Skinner and Cavs 1st round pick.

Thornton
Adding him really concerns me, because it makes me think the front office is still stuck staring at points per game as a metric of ability. Is the front office using ANY advanced metrics? Do they really think he’s going to improve when he’s already 26?
I realize it’s the last year of his deal and it doesn’t matter, but it’s a baffling move. I feel like I’m following the Kansas City Royals suddenly.

And then my head will explode. Thornton is an 8th man on a good team.

Looking at the basketball will drive you mad. Just look at the bottom line. What he does on the court is an afterthought.
The Wiz better be honest about the fact that we don't have our rebuilding pieces yet

28, 28 and 26
Their respective ages. Incredible.
Of course
But again, the frustration has more to do with what it says about who the front office is targeting.
Al Thornton? Really? Why not just buy out Gooden and save money that way? What’s the point?
How much would buying him out have saved?
by morethesamewiz on Feb 17, 2010 7:08 PM EST up reply actions
I dunno, a couple of hundred thousand?
Whatever the discount we got on the remaining salary. But now we’re paying Thornton $2.8 million next year.
I realize a) we have to pay someone in 10/11 and b) the goal is to cut money this year, but I don’t like it.
I'm not too concerned about that
Adding 2011 salary isn’t so bad with me because I don’t want us splurging in 2010.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Amen to that
It makes no sense for us to go all out in the 2010 free agency bonanza. We need to be much more patient and draft-centric, and rebuild slowly.

Given that
Seems like a no brainer that they’ll try to ink Foye to the qualifying offer.
Is Foye a guy you'd want for the next 5 years on the Wiz?
No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
Depends on the dollars
But for next season, if they aren’t clearing cap room for it, it probably makes sense to bring him back on the one year qualifying offer at just under $5 million. Won’t put them in the tax and he can play a bit.
Might be the kind of guy who plays well with Wall too.
It never hurts a team to put it’s best talent on the floor together. Or, rarely it does anyway. If Foye is one of the best players remaining on the Wiz, it doesn’t make sense to let him walk for little.
No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
I'd bring him back for the qualifying and hope to move him at the trade deadline.
by BayAreaBullet on Feb 17, 2010 8:03 PM EST up reply actions
That's easier said than done BAB.
Foye would be BYC next year and could refuse any deal to another team. Any deal to another team would see him lose his Bird Rights. (Which probably wouldn’t matter.)
But my point is that trading players in that particular situation would be pretty difficult.
No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
Yeah, trading Foye next year is basically impossible

First he trades Stevenson for Gooden, then Gooden for Skinner. Does Ernie insist that there be at least one player on the team at all times with a strange beard, or at least the proclivity to have a strange beard?

Can you believe this?
This is like having an everlasting Worst Nightmare. Going into this season, who thought that Antawn Jamison would be a Cav, and we’d have a starting line up of Randy Foye, Nick Young, Mike Miller, Andray Blatche, and Javale McGee on February 17. This season is hell. The longtime owner Abe Pollin dies, the franchise player is now a convicted felon, 17-33 through 30 games(when we expected to win 50), Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood on a championship caliber team, and now your heart and soul Antawn Jamison suiting up for your once-hated rivals and teaming up with Lebron James.
Where do we go from here?
I really hope we don’t go out and overpay some second/third tier free agents in order to pretend like we are fielding a competitive team. Let’s wait until after we find someone in the draft to start serious efforts to build through free agency.

I know the rebuilding process looks pretty dire right now and that we have no idea what the plan is or how this is going forward. But now is the time to begin again.

What's on the books for 2010-2011 season?
I’m getting 36 million including Thornton, McGuire, Young, Blatche, McGee, Arenas, Ross, Cav’s draft pick, Wiz 1st and 2nd round draft picks.
If we offer Boykins a max-contract, however, that throws off my calculations considerably.
Is this a done deal??
Did a little research and found the following regarding players involved in this trade..
Players with Trade Restrictions
Brian Skinner from L.A. Clippers
Skinner is a one year bird player which means he must agree to the deal for any trade to happen. Further, if Skinner agrees to be traded, his Bird status will be reset and he will be viewed as a non-bird free agent this summer.
Drew Gooden from Washington
Gooden was recently traded and as a result he cannot be traded until Apr 13, 2010.
Alright, he's done his damage

Make him a 20/game scorer
And trade his _.
The best part of this deal is the inclusion of Preldzic
Not because he is any good, but because of the humor. Can you imagine that the Wiz and Cavs are negotiating a Jamison for Z trade, and suddenly Ernie says, “And we want the rights to Preldzic!”
I can just imagine Danny Ferry lunging for the mute button on his phone so Ernie didn’t hear the Cavs laughing.

Ellis is like alot of guys in the NBA in that he needs specific people around him for them to be succesful. He can’t guard. Is the second biggest black hole at the 2 spot in the league and needs alot of babying. He can really score though so I can see him helping teams with the right configuration. I am very much around the bay and am looking out my office window at Alcatraz right now.

I figure there are a few Boston bars too. And New York bars. Always are.
But, I don’t really get what’s special about a bar in a particular location. Bars all have the same thing in them: Alcohol. What matters is the alcohol they serve and not the theme. What do I know: I’m from a cowtown full of dumb hicks anyway.

yeah I want to have some cap space next year to aid us on trades(a la OKC)
but I’m not trying to make any big waves in FA this summer so keeping those guys on the books next year and trying to trade them doesn’t hurt. If we are way under the cap this summer picking up Howards 10M option might be a good idea if we think we can trade it for teams afraid of the CBA.

Random, off-topic question for Prada or anyone with knowledge
Did the Pacers try to void Artest after the brawl at the Palace? I ask because it is somewhat related to the Gil situation, if team tried to punish him after the league already had suspended him. If no, then I guess it doesn’t really matter, but if they tried and failed, then at least there is some kind of precedent. But I am not even sure the Wiz would have more ground to stand on when if trying to void Gil, than the Pacers would have with the Artest situation.

I have been waiting for this also. I found the old team to be unwatchable. They didn’t work well together anymore. Sad. We still have talent. Lets see how they retool. As a life long bullets/wizards fan, it feel good to be able to pay attention to them again.
Yep
I’m much more excited to watch these players than the ones starting for us two weeks ago.

I'm happy with this
Don’t know jack about Thornton yet, but he’s a prospect. We got a pick, a prospect, and #caproom. Much better than I’d feared…
Here's all you need to know about Thornton.
Catch the ball. Shoot the ball. Repeat.

Travis Outlaw is a more versatile version of Thornton. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. You decide.

Not a good thing for Thornton.

If he's not even as good as Travis Outlaw.

Plus dude's old. 27 already.
Kings fans wanted him over Hawes? Really? Spence is only 21 still and already better than Thornton.

I'm not going to rehash who I wanted.
It’s not important. (Mainly because I was wrong.)

I don't understand the mystical love for Outlaw. I really don't. And never will.
And the Clippers had a worse deadline than the Wizards did. Imagine that. At least the Pollin family and Ted Leonsis care about the Wizards. I’m not sure Donald Sterling is even capable of caring period.

I'm not sure Donald Sterling is a human being.
He had to have been manufactured by someone, possibly David Stern, so that one team could solely just make profit for the NBA while doing nothing good for themselves.

You're missing an I
BTW check out the new Kings news on StR. Rockets tried to recruit Kings in T-Mac deal.

And it would have gotten rid of Beno and Noc.

Assets, assets, assets as a wise individual I know who is always saying to me when I'm mad.
I offer the same advice. Although, that also includes having faith in your GM which more Kings have right now than Wiz fans do I would imagine. (Although, my opinion is that EG did the right things for his job, and the team for the future.)

It's funny to see the Cavs fans reactions over on their board
“Jamison is going to ruin our chemistry”, “How could they lose Ilgauskas?” blah blah blah. I hope Antawn destroys their chemistry something awful.
I am now less angry
At least we are not stuck with Jamison’s contract after moving Butler and Haywood for 20 cents on the dollar.
Getting a pick and salary cap relief isn’t too bad really. I don’t quite understand the move for Thornton unless it was done solely to get us under the cap for this year. He is pretty terrible but he is young enough and cheap enough that I don’t really have a problem with him being someone we use to fill out our roster with the hope that we stand pat this offseason and use our cap room to fleece teams out of prospects Eric Maynor-style.
agree with everything you said
From now on I want us to be very discriminating shoppers in FA and try and use our cap space to accumulate picks unless we can sign someone for an absolute steal.

me too -- less angry
we dumped salary— and got cap relief.
I’ll be even happy if the Wizards decide to keep Arenas, and build a team around him (again).
I am still puzzled as to why the Cavs wanted Jamison
But this is pretty much a clean slate. I like it. Now how long are we going to suck?
Most important question raised by this trade:
What do we do about rooting for Cleveland now? It just feels wrong to want them to win, but I think Antawn deserves it.
Very torn about this.
Agreed
I honestly think in the next day or two that question deserves its own thread + poll.
Let Cleveland fans worry about rooting for Jamison (there are lots more of them than us)
I’ll be hoping that they lose horribly every night. Jamison is permitted to do well as long as it doesn’t result in them winning. Remember that we get their pick, so every loss helps our cause.
That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing
Where did you hear that?

Thanks Twan
You were my fav player. Even though he’s playing 4 the cavs…i hope he gets his championship…
Oh My
Major faux pas!! You can in no way hope that the Cleveland Cavaliers win a championship, this is a Wizards blog remember!! lol

I, admittedly, have never been a huge fan of AJ's game
But I always appreciated his character and desire. As much as it will hurt to see bron bron get a ring, I hope AJ finally gets his. Good luck to ya man.
I would settle for Lebron going to NY next season
and THEN the Cav’s win a title. I just can not say I want Lebron to win a title. Under any circumstance

Oooh., now that Dampier is injured, can we trade Ilgauskas to Dallas?
I admit that I know nothing about Dallas’s salary cap and would be happy with just a buyout.
theBIGC1982
Actually if we can trade him FOR damp
that would be good – Damp has one of those great team option contracts that are like uber expiring contracts (because they can be used in off season trades and then cut)

How about for Beaubois?
jk

Idk the fact that I have watched most of the Mavs game tonight
and most of last night’s game, yet haven’t seen him play one minute. I guess different people have different definitions of untouchable

Mavs winning handily now..
brendon is a big difference maker… he’s getting rebounds…blocking or altering shots…getting a dunk or two when Dirk is doubled. i mean they really look good.
Yeah I was joking
The idea that he is untouchable seems a little farfetched

I'd be happy with either of those
I’d be unhappy with Il taking time from other players. If we need another big, can’t we sign someone from that mysterious place known as the D League?

This was a good deal for the Wizzies....
Under the cap. Money to spend next year. A likely high draft pick plus a late first rounder and and early second rounder. A hungry Josh Howard. An assortment of decent back-ups to test out this year. A chance for JVM to show his stuff a bit more.
And maybe the real seven-day Dray at last.
Thanks Captain Antawn. Now, go win a championship and get Cleveland off the schneid. You are a good one!

I am a big Singleton fan
He’s a great fit on a young rebuilding team.
He will make our young guys up their effort.
A tiny ray of light in this otherwise terrible series of moves.
so are the wiz done dealing
since the wiz have a bunch of cap space for next year and likely wont sign anyone big, couldnt the team trade some of its expiring contracts for a contract that expires after next year and pick up some picks
