Antawn Jamison traded to Cavaliers, Wizards get Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Al Thornton, Cavaliers 1st

Weird scene at Verizon Center earlier tonight.  Before Flip Saunders talked to the media, Wizards PR took him aside for a few minutes.  He later returned, but that had never happened before.

Maybe it's because the Wizards are closing in on a deal to trade Antawn Jamison to the Cavaliersaccording to Michael LeeLee reports that Washington's getting at least Zydrunas Ilgauskas and a first-round pick back. He also reports that Drew Gooden is headed to some Western Conference team, which explains why he isn't even in the building right now.

Scroll down for the game thread if you wish.  Discuss the trade here.  I'm personally relieved that we can now begin the rebuilding process.

UPDATE: Adrian Wojnarowski tweets that the Clippers are the Western Conferece team.  I wonder if this means we're getting Sebastian Telfiar/Al Thornton.  Hmm...

UPDATE 2: The trade, according to Wojnarowski, is Jamison and Sebastian Telfair to Cleveland, Drew Gooden to the Clippers and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Al Thornton, Brian Skinner and Cleveland's first-round pick here.  Actually, that's not so terrible, even though I'm not a fan of Thornton.

UPDATE 3: BIG NEWS FOLKS! WE ALSO GET THE RIGHTS TO SOME DUDE NAMED EMIL PRELDZIC!!

The Wizards also get the rights to former Cavs pick, Emil Preldzic, a source said.

UPDATE 4: Actually, it's Emir Preldzic, and here's his Draft Express page.

Also, I missed this, but apparently reporters tried chasing Antawn Jamison down.  He didn't want to talk, and got in a car with Drew Gooden in the passenger seat.  Weird.

UPDATE 5: According to Ric Bucher, Brian Skinner is not in the deal.  This means that, if my calculations are correct...

(Wait for it)

(Wait for it)

(Wait for it)

WE'RE UNDER THE LUXURY TAX!!!

UPDATE 6: The trade is official.  The Wizards sent out a press release that didn't include Brian Skinner's name in it.  First two paragraphs of the release below the jump.  Also, Ilgauskas apparently has a trade kicker, so we might not totally be under the tax after all.  The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Brian Windhorst talked to Ilgauskas' agent, who said he's going to try to work out a buyout.

Star-divide

WASHINGTON, DC - Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has completed a three-team deal in which they acquired Al Thornton from the Los Angeles Clippers and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, a 2010 first round pick and the rights to Emir Preldzic from the Cleveland Cavaliers.  The Wizards sent Antawn Jamison to Cleveland and Drew Gooden to Los Angeles while the Clippers sent Sebastian Telfair to Cleveland to complete the trade.

"Antawn Jamison has been the embodiment of leadership on and off the court for this franchise for five-and-a-half seasons and we thank him for all he has done for the Wizards and the city of Washington," said Grunfeld.  "Unfortunately, our on-court results have not met our expectations and we felt it was necessary to make changes to improve our future and our financial flexibility.  This trade accomplished both of those objectives."

I got mad at you a couple times this year even if I got why you were making me mad. At least you know you can come back here and have the PA announcer get your name right. (looking at you Orlando.)

Well if Wash gets a 1st round pick from Cle and cap relief

That’s really something. It’s better than nothing. It doesn’t change anything with Gil, but if the Wiz kept Jamison & Butler things would have likely devolved with Gil around.

This is a good thing for the Wiz if Jamison goes to the Wiz. I don’t know that it would change the perception of the franchise from outside players, but showing class in dealing with Jamison & Butler could help how the Wiz are perceived in time. (Longshot I know.)

So the 30th+ pick in the draft

So the Wizards are walking out of this mess without one young player. I know the market is what it is, but that’s hard to believe.

Clipps picked up his option for next year.

Be careful what you wish for. I haven’t seen a ton of Nick Young because I don’t watch a ton of Wiz games honestly, but I’ve seen plenty of Clipper games with Thornton. He is not the answer if you ask me. I think the Wiz are doing this deal because it gets them closer to being under the tax. In fact, that’s exactly why they’re doing the deal.

Yep.

I think EG and the Pollins/Leonsis knew that it wasn’t possible to save money and get under the tax unless they did 3 or 4 separate deals to accomplish it. I had a feeling this was the case, when the original Butler/Haywood trade was made and now it’s obvious to all that was the goal from the beginning. There’s just no advantage if you’re EG to announce it head of time. Teams already know what you’re doing, and the fans can figure it out after the fact. But announcing it ahead of time has no advantage to getting deals done.

Any chance Ernie has the foresight to move Ilgauskas to a WC team looking for a playoff center? Sacramento for Kenny Thomas’ expiring contract, Udoka and a future consideration?

Thornton

Adding him really concerns me, because it makes me think the front office is still stuck staring at points per game as a metric of ability. Is the front office using ANY advanced metrics? Do they really think he’s going to improve when he’s already 26?

I realize it’s the last year of his deal and it doesn’t matter, but it’s a baffling move. I feel like I’m following the Kansas City Royals suddenly.

But again, the frustration has more to do with what it says about who the front office is targeting.

Al Thornton? Really? Why not just buy out Gooden and save money that way? What’s the point?

by mfish on Feb 17, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno, a couple of hundred thousand?

Whatever the discount we got on the remaining salary. But now we’re paying Thornton $2.8 million next year.

I realize a) we have to pay someone in 10/11 and b) the goal is to cut money this year, but I don’t like it.

by mfish on Feb 17, 2010 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not too concerned about that

Adding 2011 salary isn’t so bad with me because I don’t want us splurging in 2010.

by pookeyguru on Feb 17, 2010 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

Depends on the dollars

But for next season, if they aren’t clearing cap room for it, it probably makes sense to bring him back on the one year qualifying offer at just under $5 million. Won’t put them in the tax and he can play a bit.

by mfish on Feb 17, 2010 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

Might be the kind of guy who plays well with Wall too.

It never hurts a team to put it’s best talent on the floor together. Or, rarely it does anyway. If Foye is one of the best players remaining on the Wiz, it doesn’t make sense to let him walk for little.

No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

by pookeyguru on Feb 17, 2010 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

That's easier said than done BAB.

Foye would be BYC next year and could refuse any deal to another team. Any deal to another team would see him lose his Bird Rights. (Which probably wouldn’t matter.)

But my point is that trading players in that particular situation would be pretty difficult.

Can you believe this?

This is like having an everlasting Worst Nightmare. Going into this season, who thought that Antawn Jamison would be a Cav, and we’d have a starting line up of Randy Foye, Nick Young, Mike Miller, Andray Blatche, and Javale McGee on February 17. This season is hell. The longtime owner Abe Pollin dies, the franchise player is now a convicted felon, 17-33 through 30 games(when we expected to win 50), Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood on a championship caliber team, and now your heart and soul Antawn Jamison suiting up for your once-hated rivals and teaming up with Lebron James.

I know the rebuilding process looks pretty dire right now and that we have no idea what the plan is or how this is going forward. But now is the time to begin again.
Lets have Leonsis buy the team. Lets have a new more visionary general manager. Lets have a little luck in the lottery. And lets start on the the road to a championship.

Is this a done deal??

Did a little research and found the following regarding players involved in this trade..

Players with Trade Restrictions

Brian Skinner from L.A. Clippers

Skinner is a one year bird player which means he must agree to the deal for any trade to happen. Further, if Skinner agrees to be traded, his Bird status will be reset and he will be viewed as a non-bird free agent this summer.

Drew Gooden from Washington

Gooden was recently traded and as a result he cannot be traded until Apr 13, 2010.

Take the flawed player with the bad contract and call it a “win” because in a vacuum you are getting the better of the on-court product.

Not saying you’re wrong, but not sure Walsh would go for it because of the similarities to the previous era.

What I’m saying is that Rondo is a fine complementary talent. A building block of a franchise, in my opinion, he is not.

yeah I want to have some cap space next year to aid us on trades(a la OKC)

but I’m not trying to make any big waves in FA this summer so keeping those guys on the books next year and trying to trade them doesn’t hurt. If we are way under the cap this summer picking up Howards 10M option might be a good idea if we think we can trade it for teams afraid of the CBA.

Random, off-topic question for Prada or anyone with knowledge

Did the Pacers try to void Artest after the brawl at the Palace? I ask because it is somewhat related to the Gil situation, if team tried to punish him after the league already had suspended him. If no, then I guess it doesn’t really matter, but if they tried and failed, then at least there is some kind of precedent. But I am not even sure the Wiz would have more ground to stand on when if trying to void Gil, than the Pacers would have with the Artest situation.

My ego says of course.

Reality says that I would have to be good at putting together a new roster and an excellent judge of talent. Also, I would have to have the blessings of the Pollin family and Ted Leonsis.

Would I like to be the GM for any team? Yes I would. I’m just not sure if I’m good enough of a politician to do the job to satisfy the owners need to sell the team to John Q Public.

Forgive me for thinking that you could run a NBA team better than some guys in the NBA. You might be able to do that. But, that’s because I know how thoughtful you are about how a team is put together. You do understand that it doesn’t necessarily work as simple as some like to believe.

So might as well get a guy who can help their playoff run now and won’t kill their cap. I figured they’d do that with Troy Murphy though.

The bet is that the Kings do not trade for Murphy just to get rid of Beno’s contract by also including Greene right?

I think they would rather move Noc at this point.

Beno is a player in the rotation and than they would have to replace him with someone else. Nobody else is guaranteed to fit as well with Reke as Beno does right now.

It's funny to see the Cavs fans reactions over on their board

“Jamison is going to ruin our chemistry”, “How could they lose Ilgauskas?” blah blah blah. I hope Antawn destroys their chemistry something awful.

by satchmore on Feb 17, 2010 9:45 PM EST reply actions

I am now less angry

At least we are not stuck with Jamison’s contract after moving Butler and Haywood for 20 cents on the dollar.

Getting a pick and salary cap relief isn’t too bad really. I don’t quite understand the move for Thornton unless it was done solely to get us under the cap for this year. He is pretty terrible but he is young enough and cheap enough that I don’t really have a problem with him being someone we use to fill out our roster with the hope that we stand pat this offseason and use our cap room to fleece teams out of prospects Eric Maynor-style.

by Manimal Smith on Feb 17, 2010 9:50 PM EST reply actions

agree with everything you said

From now on I want us to be very discriminating shoppers in FA and try and use our cap space to accumulate picks unless we can sign someone for an absolute steal.

me too -- less angry

But this is pretty much a clean slate. I like it. Now how long are we going to suck?

by ccrun1800 on Feb 17, 2010 9:55 PM EST reply actions

Most important question raised by this trade:

What do we do about rooting for Cleveland now? It just feels wrong to want them to win, but I think Antawn deserves it.

Very torn about this.

by Manimal Smith on Feb 17, 2010 10:07 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

I honestly think in the next day or two that question deserves its own thread + poll.

by sierradave on Feb 17, 2010 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

Let Cleveland fans worry about rooting for Jamison (there are lots more of them than us)

I’ll be hoping that they lose horribly every night. Jamison is permitted to do well as long as it doesn’t result in them winning. Remember that we get their pick, so every loss helps our cause.

Actually if we can trade him FOR damp

that would be good – Damp has one of those great team option contracts that are like uber expiring contracts (because they can be used in off season trades and then cut)

This was a good deal for the Wizzies....

Under the cap. Money to spend next year. A likely high draft pick plus a late first rounder and and early second rounder. A hungry Josh Howard. An assortment of decent back-ups to test out this year. A chance for JVM to show his stuff a bit more.

And maybe the real seven-day Dray at last.

Thanks Captain Antawn. Now, go win a championship and get Cleveland off the schneid. You are a good one!

I am a big Singleton fan

He’s a great fit on a young rebuilding team.

He will make our young guys up their effort.

A tiny ray of light in this otherwise terrible series of moves.

by MR on Feb 18, 2010 7:51 AM EST reply actions

I was always a Ruffin fan too, but I don’t think the two are that similar except for their motors (and scalps).

Singleton hit a couple of jumpers. Ruffin couldn’t hit an open putback. Ruffin seemed thicker, available to play center in a pinch. Singleton is quicker.

by MR on Feb 18, 2010 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

so are the wiz done dealing

since the wiz have a bunch of cap space for next year and likely wont sign anyone big, couldnt the team trade some of its expiring contracts for a contract that expires after next year and pick up some picks
