Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Also, the Wizards don't want to move Miller and would like to re-sign him after this season.

From Michael Lee, via Wizards Insider. I found this to be the most interesting part of the blog post.

I'm actually cool with this

As long as we’re not talking a long-term deal. We have to sign someone to get up to the minimum salary and Miller at least is unselfish and doesn’t care about shots or PT.

Something like 3 years/21 million is the absolute highest I go, but I think it’s fair.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Well

He’s given everything he had for both the Grizzlies and the Timberwolves, who aren’t exactly elite teams with winning traditions. If he does agree to stay, I will welcome resigning him, for the reasons Prada gave above.

My point is that I thought the Wizards were going to rebuild

Resigning Miller undercuts that, both because he would cut into cap space and playing time, and because he is an expiring contract that has value in trades now. We’ve got to move Caron, Haywood, and Jamison to free up cap space that we will use to … resign Miller? If the Wizards were going to resign any of their older players, it should have been Haywood because it is difficult to find solid centers.

When Miller arrived in DC, he said that he was so happy because he had been with losing teams for so long (Surprise, Mike!). So, I’m assuming he wants to sign with a winner, meaning that if the Wizards resign him, the Wiz will have to overpay.

Also, why is current Wizards management talking about who they are going to sign this summer? Won’t the sale be complete by then? And if it isn’t, then they won’t be adding salary, because it will negatively impact the sale price.

Agreed

I honestly dont think they have a clue at this point and EG is just doing what he feels he has to do in order to save his job. It’s just like they say, cut the head (Pollin) and the body will fall. This team has absolutely no direction at this point and are going to be paying the price for years to come.

You have to have somebody on your roster

It’s not like you’re trading all those guys and giving everything to Mike Miller.

If We Can Move Jamison For Expirings

Then the Wizards will only have just over $25 million committed to salaries next season. So we wouldn’t waste all of our cap space if we resigned Miller to a reasonable deal. We could sign him to $7 million per season and still be over $20 million below the cap.

But why not take that money and use it to sign young guys?

Rather than a 30 year old? If the Wizards want to blow cap space on a thirty year old, they should have used it to resign Haywood.

Let’s face it — part of the reason Ernie is getting the word out that they want to resign Miller is to somehow justify his trade last summer.

I Think Brendan Made It Clear

That he either wanted more money, no longer wanted to play for Washington, or both. Maybe Miller wouldn’t be so difficult to resign. Like Prada pointed out, we have to fill out our roster somehow. He would be a good mentor for the younger guys on how to play the right way.

Also

I think having guys like Mike Miller on the team makes us more likely to sign someone of value in free agency.

i love mike miller

and even if they trade him, i wouldn’t mind resigning him in the offseason. Miller is the kind of unselfish role model that the young guys need. tremendously underrated, can shoot pass and rebound, why wouldn’t we want to keep him as long as it doesn’t cost too much?
