The Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets and Miami Heat were interested in acquiring center Brendan Haywood from the Wizards, but couldn’t put together an adequate offer before the Mavericks landed him.
The Blazers offered Steve Blake, rookie Jeff Pendergraph and a first-round pick for Haywood. When Washington countered by asking for swingman Rudy Fernandez the Blazers declined. Blazers owner Paul Allen is a big fan of Fernandez.
Haywood turned down a four-year, $35 million contract extension from Washington last summer, but a source said the Mavericks hope to re-sign him after the season.
Marc Spears sheds some light on why management may have thought Brendan Haywood wouldn't be coming back to Washington. Also, I'm interested in seeing what everyone has to say about the proposed deal between Portland and Washington. I think that deal would have been much better for the Wizards than the Dallas trade, but there is something to be said for gaining flexibility at all costs.

I'd have done that Portland deal immediately
(bashes head).
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Me too
Pendergraph has a huge upside, Blake has proven to be better than expected, and an extra pick in a decent draft pool. WTF

fuck management
sorry for the profanity but why the fuck wouldn’t we take that deal? Just so we could dump Deshawn and Caron and the Pollins could get some extra money from Ted because now we have a clean plate? I feel sick.

Not so sure why getting rid of Deshawn’s salary was high on Grunfeld’s priority list…. He’ll only make $4.1 Million next year (AND he’d be an expiring contract)….
Caron for Josh Howard… (I’m certain Dallas would have done that deal – especially if Ernie didn’t insist on Stevenson being included)
Haywood for Pendergraph, Blake and a 1st round pick (awesome deal)
Jamison to Cleveland for Ilgauskas/cap relief (nothing else needed)
That would have been acceptable….. actually, better than acceptable… that would have been good for the Wizards rebuilding efforts…

Grunfeld...
Is a bit more than touched… Just how much more damage does he have to do before he is gone?…
Oh Em Gee!!!
I would’ve done this trade, over the Dallas one, in a heart beat. Atleast we’d get a point guard for this season, younger, AND a DRAFT PICK!!.. If you’re gonna go with this rebuild, you gotta think youth and picks in every deal (as Ted Leonsis would say). C’mon EG, thanks for helping to ruin us by sending two of our most prized assests for scraps.
That Portland deal was a no-brainer
But apparently the Wizards weren’t looking to get talent or picks. If there was a choice between a first deal that gave them young talent or a pick versus a second deal that saved them even a little money compared to the first deal, they were going to choose the second deal.
When the current owners don’t have to worry at all about attracting fans in the future (because they about to sell), it’s all about the $$.
I really hate
Ernie Grunfeld. And this just solidified my hate into a little black ball of bile.
Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!
I am a sucker for Pendergraph. I was holding out hope he’d be there at 35 this year. How silly of me. They turned down a first round draft pick and a player taken in teh 30’s in the most recent draft… for nothing.
Ernie needs to be stopped. He should not be in charge of the team or allowed to make deals that are so bad for the franchise.
That trade
gets a “meh” too. Pendergraph has upside, but that’s because he’s young, by definition he has to have upside. And the arguments about salary are the same if we pick up another draft pick, even a late one. If we use the pick, that kid has to get traded too. I’m more of a fan of cap space. Why take on guys when we are trying to clear the cupboard?
This doesn't preclude clearing away Butler and Jamison for cap space
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Correct me if I'm wrong
But that $1.5 million we’d be paying for an extra 1st rounder wasn’t gonna hurt our cap space in the least.
Not doing this deal was just awful. Pendergraph is a nice young player, he could end up being a good rotation player. And Blake would have been the perfect fit for this team for the rest of the season. Blake and a 1st rounder were a no-brainer (or should have been) adding Pendergraph is the icing on the cake.
Any possibility
that no one would take either of them without Haywood?
Just trying to rationalize… I can’t believe Ernie turned down a draft pick, a real PG and a solid PF prospect.
Gah.
Yeah, I would have taken that instantly. At least we would have gotten something for Haywood.
The Washington Wizards: providing career scoring nights for unknown opposing bench players since 2004.
The question with this is,
would this deal have been worth keeping Stevenson? I personally think it would have, but apparently the guys who matter, didn’t quite agree

Stevenson was only going to make $4.1 Million next year…. It’s not like he has a Cap killer contract (Like Gil’s $17.7 Million, or Jamison’s $13.3 Million)….
We know that Portland was willing to give up an expiring contract (Blake $4 Million), a prospect (Pendergraph $500K) and a First round Pick (likely low high teens, low 20’s pick)…. for Haywood. (Perhaps Utah, Houston or Denver may have offered more, but we KNOW about what Portland offered)
So the Wiz would have saved money this year…. and an additional $4Mil next…
They STILL could have traded Butler to Dallas for Josh Howard (and saved another $1 Million this year, and $10.5 Mil next….
Then trade Jamison to Cleveland for Ilgauskas…. for the big savings next year.
Bottom line if the Wizards did it that way, they would still get cap relief, AND THEY WOULD HAVE A PICK and a prospect.
so we keep Stevenson the rest of this year…. SO WHAT… he would be an expiring contract next year… someone to perhaps use to get another asset.

I agree with everything
I’m for a clean slate with this team and clearing the space is needed, but if you have the chance to get draft picks…how does Grunfeld turn that down unless he’s trying to improve the team this year? At least we’re staying on Mark Cuban’s good side. He took Howard off our hands, gave us Jamison…bought time we returned the favor.
how do we know?
that Spears’s story is accurate? I agree that Grunfeld has proven to be a bust: the proof of the pudding is in the eating. And I agree that if he could have gotten a 1st and a rookie for Haywood, it was outrageous not to take that. But, before we get all worked up, do we know it is true?
