The Blazers remain interested in Haywood, since they've been relying on soon-to-be 37-year-old Juwan Howard at center in recent weeks. They reportedly declined a deal for Haywood that would've cost them Rudy Fernandez and Nicolas Batum. I know the Wizards asked for a lot there, but I wouldn't close the books on discussions about Haywood or Fernandez. Fernandez has been unhappy with his role in Portland, according to a league source.
Michael Lee with some trade talk. He also discusses the Tracy McGrady rumors.
Personally, I'd be overjoyed if the Wizards swapped Haywood for Fernandez and Steve Blake/Travis Outlaw's expiring contract. They'd probably have to throw in another contract - maybe Dante Cunningham? Either way, I'd be overjoyed with that return.

If they will not part with both Rudy Fernandez and Nicolas Batum
We should make them take Stevenson’s contract also. While I would love to keep haywood, I doubt he stays and want to get something instead on nothing. But Ernie’s number one priority has to be cutting salary (which includes Voiding Gil)
yeah but the thinking is that we will be without Haywood next year anyways so atleast we get a solid young player
I wonder if we can get Gortat through trade this summer or at the deadline.

BYC stuff makes a Gortat trade tougher now
Over the summer, things will be easier.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
If we can get one solid young guy like Fernandez per trade
I can be happy. The only guard really worth keeping from this team is NY. Then hopefully we can get a guy like Lowry in FA or through trade. I think we should trade as many guys as we can and then worry about where all the new pieces all fit in this summer when we can better make some trades or maybe sign a guy.

We need the hope
Fernadez could still turn into a solid scorer if he gets the chance. This would be a good swap, especially if we could dump Stevenson in the process. Not much chance of that happening though, especially with the way he’s been shooting.
Sorry
I’m not excited by this at all. Another “developing scorer” guard. Kill me now. How about a big???
I highly, highly doubt that the Blazers part with Fernandez
After Roy, he is far and away their most popular player, and gives them an international boom. It would be a slap in the face to the Blazer Maniacs if they deal Fernandez just to lost 4-2 in the first round of the playoffs, as opposed to getting swept.
As a Wizards fan, I’d be overjoyed if we got Fernandez for Haywood.
Actually, I’d be overjoyed if we got Batum or Bayless too. Any of the three would be huge for the Wizards. They all play hard and have loads of talent. I have no idea why Steve Blake gets so many minutes over there.

Agreed
Any of those three young guys from Portland would be good. Just need to bring in young guys to start the rebuilding process.
I believe the thinking on Fernandez
is that he is really unhappy there and is suffering from a minutes crunch. I would take any of those three you mention but I believe from reading around they are more inclined to shop Fernandez than Bayless(more upside, can possibly play point alongside Roy) or Batum(more upside, protection for letting Travis Outlaw go through trade or not resigning him this summer). Fernandez may be popular but he is stuck behing Portland’s best player.
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ykg7zjwPost trade to ESPN
I would do that trade even though we might have to make another move(trade or cut Critt and Boykins if possible) first to create some roster spots.

That makes sense and is in line with what Blazer fans tell me
But they have to face facts at some point. Fernandez plays the same position as their best player, and he didn’t come over from Spain to be a 15-20 minute guy. They should try to get some value for him at some point.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Yeah, they don't need a Juan Carlos Navarro situation
They could probably re-sign Haywood or do a sign and trade this summer if they have faith in Oden and Pryzbilla’s health.

How exactly do the Blazers plan on getting a player like Haywood without giving up a good young player?
Fernandez is the worst fit on that team because he plays behind someone who’s going to log 36-40 minutes a night for the next ten years, so it makes sense to trade him. Batum is nice, but he’s a defense-first small forward who can hit the occasional three, which isn’t really that hard to find, plus they’ve already got Webster. They’re both also the kind of shooter and long perimeter player we desperately need. If they want Nick Young or really anyone other than McGee or maybe Blatche to sweeten the deal, fine, but they can’t expect to get a center of Haywood’s caliber for nothing.
well they seem to see Haywood as a rental
as he is an expiring contract and they have Oden and Pachulia under contract next season. I would resign him if reasonable if I were them though as Oden and Pachulia are coming off major injuries.

I think they might...
even see Brendan as a long term investment IF he were to play well for them this year. He is a better player than Przybilla and Oden is a huge question mark at this point, as in Sam Bowie redux.
Fernandez would be a big hit in DC, and I really would like to see the Wizzies do this deal.
I don't know if they do, but they should
He’s still 29 I think, and it’s not like he’s going to shrink or really be hurt by losing a step. He’ll be about as good for another three or four years, which is about the length of whatever deal he would probably be a good influence on Oden so long as they don’t beat each other up over minutes.

NO
the Trade Machine does not count player options….
DeShawn has a player option for the 2010-2011 season…. at $4.1 Million
see Sham Sports Wizards Salaries
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Which isn't really that bad
I don’t think we should give anything up in order to clear 4 million from the payroll when we’ll likely be under the tax next year anyways, even though I’ve read about us looking into ways to get rid of him.
by pantslessyoda1 on Feb 1, 2010 6:57 PM EST up reply actions
The tax isn't the issue
The cap is, so he’s taking up space in two ways.
So we might see trades for Butler, Jamison and Butler all before the deadline
I guess you trade for a guard/SF with a trade already in mind for Butler.
I love Fernandez
And the Trailblazers may be my second favorite team, so I’d be relatively happy to see Haywood go there. Still, I think the Wizards should do everything in their power to keep Brendan. Will he be an unrestricted free agent?
yes
Which is why they are gonna trade him.
