The official Wizards predictions open thread
T minus five and a half hours until gametime, and I'm stoked. In a way, I don't really even care how well the team does, both tonight or this season. I'm just excited to watch some Wizards basketball again, knowing that there's legitimate hope in the future.
But that's just me. Anyway, here's your place to make your prediction about the Wizards' record. Feel free to throw any bold predictions in there as well.
Here's where the editors stand:
- Mike: 30-52
- CJ: 37-45
- Sean: 30-52
- Jon: 35-47
- Rook: 29-53
- Jake: 34-48

I think they can hit stride and get it together in the second half
I’m going to be optimistic and say they can do between 35-40 games, and possibly sneak into the #8 spot given how weak most of the eastern concerence is this year.
32-50
i’m increasingly worried about outside shooting (with gil uncertain) and lack of ANY kind of physical presence inside.
but much of the competition is sucktastic, so you never know. the east is insanely top-heavy.

Yeah.
Top heavy – and filled with really bad teams at the bottom….
You got the top 3 teams (Miami, Orlando and Boston), then 3 more pretty good teams (Milwaukee, Chicago and Atlanta)…
I think Indiana, New York and Charlotte will be fighting for the final two playoff spots… and I give the nod to Charlotte (because they can play defense) and New York… Just because I think Indiana is still too young (Starting Center and PG , Hibbert and Collison are both only 23). – but watch out for them in future years… they have a ton of good young talent (Grainger, Hibbert, Collison, Lance Stephenson, Tyler Hansbrough, Paul George) , lots of expiring contracts…
Then you have the bottom feeders… Detroit, Cleveland, Washington, New Jersey and Toronto…
For those of you thinking the Wizards have a shot at the Playoffs, I think you’re being too optimistic. I’m just hoping for a good year for John Wall – a year in which the Wizards develop their young players (McGee, Yi, Young, Booker, etc…), and a year in which they play hard every night and improve all year long.

that's pretty much how i see it
although i think the bucks might be worse than last year.

Hey Rook your prediction is a bit different than last year’s, lol.

Yup.
It’s kinda nice in a way not to have expectations going into a season, isn’t it? I just want to see them grow, develop, and be bad enough to get another high lottery pick.
Definitely a welcome change
We’ve been in the opposite situation for the last few years and it’s been incredibly frustrating. At this stage in our rebuild we can focus on the good things our players do instead of the results they produce. I’m excited!

28 wins
We don’t have any shooters, our best low post scorer (Blatche) is inefficient, and Wall will turn it over too much. Our defense will be around 15th, our offense around 28th.

I'm with MIke on this one
I don’t see how you can improve a defense when you replace Haywood and Stevenson with McGee and Arenas. Add the fact that, hopefully, the Wizards will be playing the young guys a ton of minutes – it all adds up to a bad year defensively.
They SHOULD be able to run some, and get easy buckets. They should also be better shooting the 3-pointers with Hinrich, Arenas and Young……. so they have a chance to have a pretty efficient offense…… even with some turn overs.
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
I think that's around what we were for the second half of last year
Wall’s probably an upgrade over Boykins/Foye on defense, but I don’t think he’ll be all that much more efficient as a scorer, at least this year. Javale’s nowhere near the defender that Haywood is, but I think his energy and shotblocking will erase enough mistakes that we’ll be able to do ok so long as we’re not playing against any big back to the basket guys.
I think the offense will be so poor because we don’t have any really efficient scorers. I think the highest true shooting percentage of any of these guys last year was like 55%, plus we won’t be particularly special on the boards.

38-44
I just bought season tickets for the first time in my LIFE. 4 Tix in Section 115, Row F (stop by some game and say ‘hey’).
I think Wall catches on quickly and after stumbling out of the gate turnover-wise tapers that number down. I think he and Arenas gel well together after about 20 games and become a pretty lethal backcourt. Our frontcourt should plague us all season, but I think we’ll be able to get up and down the court with the best of them. I’m guessing 38-40 wins should get us a 7-8 seed and first-round exit.
I truly believe this team is underrated this season. ESPECIALLY when we have Arenas-Wall-Howard on the floor together for much of the season. Looking forward to getting it all started tonight.

great show of support
I was on the verge of buying season tickets last season but decided not to because I was getting ready to buy my first home. I would’ve probably have gone watch tower if I did!
you should definitely enjoy this season though, lots of promise. Make sure you bring the tickets to games you can’t attend to BF first! You know they will end up in the hands of true fans.

Will do
My wife wasn’t happy at all considering I didn’t ask her about the purchase in advance and burned through almost 9,000 on them. Not to mention I’m 27 and we have our first child on the way in about 2-3 weeks.
Hopefully I can just sell both the Miami games and get back alot of the cash I paid for the season tix anyway. My goal is to attend about half the games and go to about half and hopefully, at least in part, supplement my own ticket expenses selling the unused tickets. We’ll see how it goes.
I’m a new poster to the board but a huge b-ball fan and more importantly a huge Wizards follower. Couldn’t be happier about John Wall’s leadership potential to this point. Between Leonsis buying the team and us lucking into the #1 pick and nabbing Wall, this couldn’t be a better time to be jumping aboard the Wiz train. Certainly bright days lie ahead…

Crap - I can't believe it...
I’m going to miss the opening game of the Season because I have a family commitment…. and it’s not like I can go over there and watch from their house – they have no TV (I know, right? What kind of tree-hugging communists don’t have TV?). …
But I have to go to my daughter’s house for dinner tonight…. I already tried the (cough, cough), I’m sick routine…. and the “but we can’t leave the dog alone for that long”… (now I have to take the dog too….)… My wife isn’t having any of it.
I could always put my foot down – show that I’m the MAN in the house – …… uh…………..
but………………………….uh………………………
I guess I’m missing the game.

83-0
In an effor to foil them, David Stern will make them play an extra game against the combined Magic, Heat, Celtics, Thunder and Lakers. The Wizards will win that game 112-80 despite a charge being called on them every time Lebron touches his lip.

31 wins seems about right to me.
IF Wall has a sensational year, and IF McGee becomes a defensive force, and IF Blatche can be as consistent as he was after the trades last season, and IF Gil plays his role properly, this team COULD win 40-45 games. I’m not counting on too many of those events transpiring, however.
30-52
Wall will have his growing pains, other teams will take advantage of our centers in the low post, and the streakiness of our team’s shooting will lose some games for us. On the other hand, Wall will have some sensational efforts, Blatche will continue putting up good numbers, and our athleticism will force some upsets of older teams. If Gil continues his efficient play from the preseason, Yi takes advantage of the mismatches his height creates, and McGee takes a step forward on post defense, we could end up better, but I’d rather go with a conservative estimate and be pleasantly surprised.

27 wins. Problems on the defensive glass. Good on the offensive boards. Inefficient on offense (ranking no better than 20th in ortg); about average in drtg (ranking in the teens). Wall and McGee emerge as building blocks for the future.

What is it with Minnesota and Kevin Love...
Why can’t they see what a talented player he is…?
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/features/rumors (Insider needed)
ESPN spreading rumors that Love could ask for a trade if they keep using him like last night… when he was pulled for Anthony Tolliver in crunch time. (Who? Are you serious? Career PER 13.8)….
Minnesota couldn’t stop the Kings at the end of the game – and especially Landry and Demarcus Cousins, who scored 16 points between them in the 4th quarter; but even worse, they couldn’t score inside – all their 4th quarter points came from jump shots.
I say trade Blatche for Love straight up…. Solves the Wizard’s rebounding problem….
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Well, we were at 26 wins last year....
The #1 overall pick usually nets you about 11 wins the first year, however we are a very young team with a lot of new pieces. I’ll say minimum 32 wins, we have to improve by at least 6 wins from last year. Now if everything goes right, Wall is amazing, Gil is the scorer he can be with no problems, Blatche and McGee make their improvements, Hinrich is solid, Howard comes back healthy and motivated, Yi develops, etc: 42 wins maximum. So that’s what I think our range is, 32-50 to 42-40. It won’t kill me if we miss the playoffs because that’s what rebuilding teams do, but we have the potential talent to beat up and run past some of the East’s weaker teams.
Where did you get that the #1 pick adds 11 wins??
I thought (thanks to sites like WoW and stuff) the impact of rookies is very limited. Even for high picks and especially rookie PG’s, except for CP3..

Can't remember if it was ESPN or not
but I saw a graphic about this sometime during the off season. They looked at the last ten to fifteen #1 picks and showed win improvement from previous season to their rookie season. A couple they threw out (Oden and Griffin for not playing). There were some outliers that probably brought up the number quite a bit (Duncan) but the average was around 11 wins. 11 would put us at 37, but if you look at how many new pieces we have, how young we are, and how difficult it is for a rookie PG to translate to the NBA, I’ll put us at a little less than that. I think 35-47 is pretty realistic. And like I said, I don’t think we’ll be worse than 30-52, the depth of the East really just isn’t too good. Best case scenario, if everything clicks, I could see us at 42-40 which would most likely mean an 8th seed, possibly 7th.
by PhenomenalSwag on Oct 28, 2010 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions
How can you make that prediction?
Say a #1 pick “adds 11 wins”. …
Adds to what? We had 2 different teams last year and we have a totally different one again now.
19 - 63
Let’s make a note of this thread’s predictions, so I can be voted the least accurate one on it at the end of the season. That’s my hope.
32 - 50
Improved defense (thanks to Mr. Wall and Mr. Hinrich) may actually be what nets us the extra 6 wins. Otherwise, I have concerns about our outside shooting and front court depth. If teams can just surround the rim against Wall, then who is going to shoot? Perhaps more importantly, the playoffs do not seem realistic when Javale McGee, in his current form, is our best player at the 5.
Im going with 40 wins and the 7th or 8th seed
Between 7 and 15 its a crap shoot basically and as a fan im optimistic on the ’IF’s’ we have and pessimistic about the other teams ’IF’s’.
It could go either way but if we do well a playoff berth is possible. I’m happy either way though, as long as the games are exiting and our young dudes show some development.
"If you don't shoot, you can't score"
Johan Cruijff
I am with CJ
37 wins, Wizards slip into the playoffs as an 8th seed and give Miami a better than expected battle before falling 4-2 in the first round.
John Wall loses out to Blake Griffin in the closest rookie of the year voting in NBA history. Javale McGee finishes sixth in blocks and John Wall finishes in the top 10 in assists and steals.
I am just a bitter Wizards fan who clings to my bobbleheads and that 2005 playoff series victory!

35 exciting John Wall filled W's
about 10 close L’s(10 or less pt losses). 30 of them excusable for a young team. 7 unbearable Losses, mostly early in the season.

Not gonna put an exact number on it
But Wiz WILL make the playoffs. 36 wins may do it. The East improved a lot, but a lot of these teams are getting a lot more credit than they deserve (Chicago, Milwaukee, Phila, Charlotte). Wiz have enough talent to eek in, just need to see how it all comes together
