Great win!

Seems like the players needed an outlet…lotta chest pounding and so forth from players… awesome…

We should fine them before every game

by Fundefined on Jan 8, 2010 9:44 PM EST reply actions

Doubt it.

I think they got fined and Antawn asked to make speech, knowing it was the right thing to do. Honestly, then know they were wronf, and I think they’ll take their lumps.

They got fined

Four guys got fined. Nobody mentioned who or how much, but guys got fined.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Thoughts

Haywood – player of the game. 18 points, 15 rebounds (6-6 shooting, 6-6 Free Throws) 1 block and excellent defense – and not just on Dwight Howard….

Caron Butler stepped it up tonight – especially in the second half. He ended up with 23 points and 7 rebounds.

Wizards out rebounded Orlando by 14 …. 14, THAT’S HUGE. (15 for Haywood, 11 for Jamison, 7 for Butler, 6 for Miller, and 8 for Andray Blatche off the bench)….

Nick Young didn’t do much.

Randy Foye shot poorly when he tried to create shots…. but shot well when he came off screens or on catch-and-shoot situations. Foye should play with Miller… and definitely not with Young.

Mike Miller needs to shoot more, but I love his 6 assists.

Wizards as a team with 17 assists on 34 made baskets… not bad.

Weird that Orlando committed 30 fouls, and the Wizards only 18, but the Free Throws were essentially the same
(Wiz with 34 FT attempts, Orlando with 30 FT attempts)…

I guess that Orlando committed a lot of non-shooting fouls…. It’s just kinda weird.. you don’t see that much.

they kept picking up terrible fouls

on defensive rebounds by the Wiz. Just terrible, stupid reach in fouls

Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!

Oh so many silly ones in the 4th

by Fundefined on Jan 8, 2010 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

One more thing

Only 9 points from the bench tonight…. That’s not sustainable – they’re going to have to get more from guys like Blatche and Young OR Blatche and Stevenson OR someone…..

considering Miller and Foye were thought to be bench players

that’s not too surprising a stat. But yes; Young and Blatche have to step up now. They are the bench’s offensive punch.

by Pryme on Jan 8, 2010 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

Your summary underestimates Miller's impact

Even before he made a basket he was huge. Rebounds, as well as “hockey assists”. I’m not assuming we can count on him for this every game, but he really kept us in it, maybe as important as anyone besides Haywood.

More on this...

For the record I was never a big Miller fan until this year, but at least three times he drove to the hoop, recognized no opportunity, and directed it to the MOST OPEN Wizard on the floor, from whence good things happened. It’s an incredibly team-first characteristic.

Maybe I just like him better since he cut his damn hair.

by RamV on Jan 8, 2010 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

That's Randy Foye. That's Mike Miller now, for some reason.

Foye and Miller can work together. Foye needs to be given the green light, and Miller can’t seemingly respond to one at times despite being a ridiculous range shooter. Whatever happened to Mike Miller in Minnesota last year, it’s stuck. As much as you may like Mike after a single game, the natural evolution of his game is to play point forward on a team coached by Nelly.

Speaking of which: Watching ESPN with breakfast just now, I caught the haircut from Mikey. Chris Mullin, here we come. That was the karmic bounce for this year’s Washington Wizards.

(Rebounding: 14 is big. Last night my doormat Wolves outboarded Indy by 28.)

I just wish we had gotten

a little more production from our bench but good win all around. The players definitely needed that one along with us.

One win tonight

felt like ten. Guess I’m gonna have to get around to changing my avatar one of these days.

tonight

seemed to me the energy tonight at the game honestly felt like almost like a playoff game. having been to so many games where the crowd was incredibly dead- it was really nice to feel like most of the arena was honestly, truly rooting for the team and pulling them to a win- it was great. wish more felt like that……

Antawn's Speech

Antawn Jamison coming out to speak to the crowd was one of the gutsiest things I’ve seen on the basketball court. Although I’m going to reserve the right to complain about his shot selection, I will always respect him for having the guts to come out and address the crowd in a very difficult situation.
In contrast, I haven’t seen or heard Ernie Grunfeld since well before Christmas.
It was an emotional game for those of us in the crowd and I actually feel proud of the team tonight.

That was class

Just saw it. Gotta give respect to someone who’ll stand up and acknowledge it. Wasn’t maudlin, wasn’t fake above all else. Just simple and direct.

I love him.

I will be crushed if we trade him, even though I kind of want him to win a championship. And that probably won’t be with us, although you never know…

Antawn Jamison

Antwan Jamison is a class act.
It will be interesting how they respond to all this. This game is an indicator – CB, AJ, and BH may develop a nice healthy competitive chip on their shoulder attitude out on the court.

had to miss most of the 2nd half

no i’m slightly hammered and back home.
psyched and shocked at the win though. everyone knew miller was the savior!!!!
what did jamison say pre-game to the crowd?

OMG

My mouth hit the floor when I saw the score. I thought this game could essentially be an afterthought. Good for them and being able to come back against a quality team.

by Aquamaneastfish on Jan 9, 2010 12:04 AM EST reply actions

This just in mike miller fined for helping wizards win.

Good win still upset about arenas

by Unxpekted on Jan 9, 2010 12:05 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Me too

But this helped a bunch. It’s probably one of 30 wins this season (at most), and I barely got to watch it, but I’ll remember it I think.

by bronco6778 on Jan 9, 2010 12:07 AM EST up reply actions

Nice win..but Let's not kid ourselves...

.. there is no way the team is better when it is missing a player who brings 22 PPG and 7 APG.

by CVC on Jan 9, 2010 12:14 AM EST reply actions

nope

But the team while he was on it was underachieving. Not blaming him just saying obviously they weren’t playing up to what they could have. Maybe if this team gets scrappy and overachieves it can still be fun to watch and win some games till it gets blown up.

by BayAreaBullet on Jan 9, 2010 1:28 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know about that

They’re less talented for sure, but less talented doesn’t always mean worse. They may come together as a team and play harder, and Miller might be as big an addition as Gil was a loss. Plus Foye gives us better D at the point, so we gain a smidge there too. All in all, I don’t think they’re any worse, considering how bad they were already playing with Gil in there.

by steadyhand on Jan 9, 2010 2:16 AM EST up reply actions

i must have had a lot to drink

i thought foye played well, but the stats show horrific shooting. i thought caron played horrific but the stats showed he played well. i thought we played lousy defense and mostly depended on orlando missing shots, but the stats showed we played good defense. while we played hard and with fire i don’t think we played particularly well, but apparently we won.

in summary, this game utterly confused me, and i have no idea what to expect going forward.

so very glad to see mike miller out there so we can bring boykins off the bench. i did see that clearly.

weird to hear they took everything gil down. seems a bit extreme. but understandable i suppose.

This post here?

Microcosm of how the Wizards season feels.

AJ stepped up to the mic...and Haywood stepped up large

Amazing.

They actually showed Character and Commitment!

by khrabb on Jan 9, 2010 1:54 AM EST reply actions

and they appear to have connected!

Now they just need to “go all in” so that they can be “ready to rule.”

Rotations made sense

…but Flip needs to stick with Young and Blatche through mistakes and bury Stevenson. Also he ought to go with McGee over Oberto as back-up center.

This could be a pretty good team with consistent roles and rotations. It can be much better than last night as the chemistry gels (e.g., Miller forcing less passes and shooting more, Foye taking only open shots, better bench play, etc.)

by Izman on Jan 9, 2010 7:12 AM EST reply actions

You're going to be waiting a bit
Miller forcing less passes and shooting more, Foye taking only open shots

Minnesota fans spent all last year thinking Miller and Foye were somehow just that small step away from figuring those things out.
